An incredible capture of this show for Closing! Some wandering is seen but never takes away from the action. Some shakiness from readjusting at time but never a lot. Very little washout is seen, only in major wideshots.

You know I read that Doyle apologized (allegedly) to Mormons for writing a really demonizing story about them, and while I was listening to said demonizing story, I couldn’t help but think “oh, yes, I must search these, or I shall be led astray” (don’t look at me, my speech patterns tend to match the books I’m reading, stop looking at me)
So, I looked up things like Mormons having a subsection that existed just to exile/murder/intimidate people (which did exist, but Brigham Young claimed he disbanded it), Mormons kidnapping their wives (I can’t find any proof for it, but all the proof against it is just “people are too hard on these guys” and I’m sorry but it is impossible to be too hard on Utah-based Mormons. You have not met a real bastard until you’ve met a stuck-up, pretentious Mormon who hails from the land of Utah), people who tried to leave the religion mysteriously vanishing (proof would be hard to find for this one anyway, because they could have just claimed it was a bear attack or an attack from the natives or some settlers on their way to California, and who would doubt them???) etc. etc.
A lot of the results were inconclusive at best. Which is perfectly fine, honestly. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle didn’t have an internet connection and access to the broadest encyclopedia in history, and apparently he got most of his information from reading papers on Mormons. It’s fine that he got things wrong. You can’t be led astray and think that this belittles or lessens the absolute horror I felt while reading parts of the story because of how terrifying and disgusting it is, from my own perspective.
So, when the main character, John Ferrier, is visited by the man himself, Brigham Young, I thought to myself, “Doyle didn’t even ever meet this man once. If there are discrepancies, that’s fine. I’ll just search them up, correct my knowledge, prove that my biases towards Mormons are really unfounded and-“
BRIGHAM YOUNG SAID THAT IF MORMONS DIDN’T PRACTICE POLYGAMY, THEY WOULD BE DAMNED TO HELL.
(From Wikipedia, with references to a book: “Brigham Young said that any male member of the church who was commanded to practice polygamy and refused would be damned.” You can actually borrow the book this quote is sourced to from, oh, Brigham Young University)
Brigham Young said that. Brigham Fucking Young fucking said that. This man has a fucking university named after him. He’s one of the most famous Mormons in history for saying “This is the place” when he came across a valley. When he threatened, in the novel, that John Ferrier had to marry off his daughter or else him not taking a wife meant he wasn’t a real Mormon, I thought it was wrong. I thought it was made up. I thought it was just a silly little thing people made up. I thought it was a goof, a gaff, poppycock.
I make no secret of my biases towards Mormons. Specifically, I find fault in those Latter-Day Saints who place their roots in Utah, the main hive, as it were. And don’t get me wrong; Utah has improved greatly in the past hundred years. Mormons are still the majority, but there are immigrants from other states and other countries, which gives me hope that maybe one day, there will be no children bullied in school because they don’t practice a bogus religion “correctly” at the age of seven. Just a small hope of mine.
I can’t tell you that Mormons are all bad people. Such a thing is impossible. Those children born into families that ask them to study scripture every night, is it really their fault? All religions call themselves “the correct religion,” so I can only assume that the problem of bullying and slandering is prevalent for all who don’t practice the same religion as the majority, when that majority controls the land. I’ve met many people who practice Mormonism who are genuinely good and kind. I’ve met just as many who would watch a child be mocked and laughed at just because that child was not one of them.
Did Mormons have a rough history? Yes. Was it majorly, almost entirely the fault of the religious leaders themselves? Also yes. What did they think would happen when they took over towns and put small shops out of business? What did they expect when all of the members voted for the same person, making it impossible for people living in that place to make their opinion known? The people drafted into the might not have knowingly done wrong, but I just can’t believe that liars as good as the likes of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young didn’t know exactly what they were doing.
So, is this story, taking place in A Study in Scarlet, demonizing to an unrealistic extreme? Of course. Such is fiction. But was everything in the story wrong?
No.
Unfortunately, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle got at least one fact correct.

'There are countless reasons why a film may struggle to come out by its intended release date, as the process of putting together an ambitious film production is never predictable. A film like Mad Max: Fury Road took over a decade of restarts, production shutdowns, studio delays, and release date changes before it finally saw its release in 2015 and was immediately hailed as an all-time great masterpiece; Terry Gilliam’s struggles to get his passion project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote completed after years of creative and financial setbacks even inspired the independent documentary The Man of La Macha to chronicle his journey. However, there are some films that went through nearly every pushback and delay possible, and still haven’t been seen by audiences. The Cillian Murphy star vehicle Hippie Hippie Shake began pre-production in the late 1990s, and went through a tumultuous behind-the-scenes process before it even got to start shooting. While the film is now more or less completed, it has yet to be officially distributed in any form, and it’s unlikely that audiences will see it anytime soon. So what made this curious Australian biopic so controversial?
What is ‘Hippie Hippie Shake'?
Hippie Hippie Shake is loosely based on the autobiography of Richard Neville, the highly influential (yet very controversial) editor of the offbeat Australian satirical magazine Oz. Long before the days of the Harvard Lampoon or the trials of Larry Flynt, Oz became highly controversial within Australia for its biting satire, shred characterization of recent events, and frequent lewd material. Oz started as a grassroots publication under Neville’s direct control in Sydney, Australia during the dawn of the 1960s when the counterculture movement was in full swing; it inspired a parallel London edition that debuted in 1967, and subsequently became a phenomenon. However, Neville’s interest in including taboo subjects like government-sponsored racism, censorship, homosexuality, police brutality, and the Vietnam War resulted in severe public blowback that resulted in two separate court cases in which the publication was put on trial for obscenity.
It’s evidently a great story, and one that certainly would be worthy of a probling historical biopic. The 1990s saw the success of several films about controversial public figures, including The People vs. Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon, so a biopic of Neville seemed all but guaranteed to be a major hit. Working Title Film Productions acquired the rights to Neville’s memoir Hippie Hippie Shake: The Dreams, the Trips, the Trials, the Love-ins, the Screw Ups: The Sixties in 1998 and hired screenwriter Don MacPherson to pen the first draft. The initial delay in production was unclear, but Hippie Hippie Shake was back on track in 2002 with the acclaimed British filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth, The Four Feathers, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) behind it, as well as a new script by Kapur’s preferred screenwriter Tom Butterworth. Unfortunately, this seemingly promising sign of progress only resulted in another delay.
Like Neville himself, Working Title was determined to have their voices heard, and a third and final attempt at adapting Hippie Hippie Shake began moving forward in May of 2007. The production had a talented filmmaker behind it with Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason director Beeban Kidron behind the camera, and a cast began to form to play the various figures within Neville’s life. The stacked ensemble included Cillian Murphy as Neville, Sienna Miller as Neville’s longtime girlfriend Louise Ferrier, Nina Liu as the famous fashion designer Jenny Kee, Emma Booth as Germaine Greer, and Tom Goodman-Hill as David Frost. Other notable British actors set to appear included BAFTA nominee Derek Jacobi, Max Minghella, Chris O’Dowd, Hugh Bonneville, Matthew Beard, and Margo Stilley, among others.
'Hippie Hippie Shake' Sees Further Delays
Gladiator screenwriter William Nicholson had helped pen an additional draft of the script that was used when the film actually began shooting in 2007. Little is known about the filming process itself, but apparently the production was so tumultuous that it made the chaos at Lucasfilm with Solo: A Star Wars Story look like smooth sailing. It’s always difficult for biopics to stand on their own when its subjects are still living; while Neville himself supported the film, the real feminist author Germaine Greer wrote a seething piece for The Guardian in which she called out the film and expressed her displeasure about being played by Booth. She stated in her piece that the notion of being portrayed infuriated her, and mused that “you used to have to die before assorted hacks started munching your remains and modeling a new version of you out of their own excreta.” Additionally, Kidron left the film in the middle of post-production, leading her husband (and the film’s co-screenwriter) Lee Hall to complete the project.
This happened to coincide with Working Title’s financial difficulties, and Neville himself stated that “Universal Pictures decided to shelve the film and save themselves a lot of tax payments.” He went on to claim that while the rough cut of the film didn’t live up to their expectations, a second cut had made significant improvement. During a promotional tour several years later for Live by Night, Miller backed up his assertions by agreeing that “I don’t think we’ll see it at this point,” but that “I did see a rough cut of it and it was a pretty beautiful film.” A test screening reaction from Ain’t It Cool News in 2008 reported that a test reviewer said that he “really liked it” despite “some predictable scenes, some hammy acting, some bad jokes.”
It doesn't look like Hippie Hippie Shake is going to be released anytime soon, and that's unfortunate. It's unquestionably been a massive struggle to bring this story to the screen, and a film about the importance of free press and the ability to hear contrasting opinions might be particularly relevant right now. It's quite unnerving when studios can simply pull the plug on a project's release, and the cancelation of Batgirl reminded film fans recently that this can happen to any type of project. Hopefully Hippie Hippie Shake will make its way on to a streaming platform at one point, as at the very least it's sure to give us a great Cillian Murphy performance.'

As biased and shameful reporting goes, this really is quite impressive.....
First there is the repeated use the phrase “SHAMED MP Margaret Ferrier” — as if they are trying to drive home the idea that what she did was terrible and wrong.
Language that, from what I remember, they have never used about Rishi Sunak (who broke the law), Carrie Symonds (who broke the law) and Boris Johnson (who broke the law, lied to Parliament, and is being investigated for breaking the law)
And language they have rarely used over other MPs.
But they use it repeatedly and persistently to attack this MP — this female MP I might add.
Secondly — the graph to show the swing from the SNP to Labour is very badly done.
The votes are colours red/yellow/blue etc (as you would expect — party colours) and yet the swing for Labour is blue — a colour most people associate with the Tories.
If you were to just glance at that, you might (if you were not paying attention) take it to read that the swing was to the Tory party, not Labour.
I would argue that is more than a little misleading.
Third — the turnout was just about half of the general election.
So the “winning candidate” who got “such a commanding victory” that “everyone is hailing as a glorious triumph” got 17,845 votes. Which is fewer votes than the Labour candidate got during the 2019 election (18, 545).
Which, to me, suggests that no one in this constituency gave a shit about this election — if you can win with fewer votes than it takes to get second place in the previous vote then really what does that say about the people who are voting and more to the point the people who are not voting?
The combined total of first and second place was only a shade over the number of votes Ms Ferrier got in total in the 2019 election.
Which again suggests that no one gave a shit about this election.
x-x-x
The constituents know it is less than a year until the General Election.
They know that whichever fuckwhit gets into the seat is a caretaker — a seatwarmer. They are going to be there for eight, maybe nine months.
They are the substitute teacher of politics, and they damn well know it.
And yet the article is reporting it as if this is a GLORIOUS DAY FOR ENGLISH POLITICS — those DAMNED INDEPENDENTISTS HAVE BEEN CRUSHED BENEATH THE HEAL OF THE GOOD DECENT ENGLISH PARTY.
It’s fucking ridiculous, and the bias throughout the article is not something you expect from an allegedly independent news source.

All hail Rihanna for turning a Super Bowl performance into the greatest pregnancy reveal yet | Morwenna Ferrier In forcing her audience to confront her physical reality, the pop star took ownership of her body – and she did it in real timeRihanna’s Super Bowl set lasted just shy of 13 minutes. But the image of the pregnant pop star, cradling her belly in a red silk Loewe catsuit as she descended from the heavens on a Perspex box, is is likely to live long in the pantheon of Instagramera pregnancy reveals.Even before she had switched into a puffer coat with built-in gloves by Alaia, it had become more than a half-time performance. Here was a woman, returning to work for the first time since having a baby, somehow converting this moment into a tightly controlled but highly visible moment, while putting paid to the difficult second pregnancy reveal. In forcing her audience to confront her physical reality, Rihanna went past making a fashion statement. She took ownership of her body, and she did it in real time. A Study in Scarlet
Part 1: Chapters 1-Part 2: Chapter 7
1. Have you ever read this book or any other Sherlock Holmes novels before? Have you ever seen any of the film or TV adaptations? I own most of the books in this series (this is ironically the only one I didn't own, haha) but this will be my first time reading one! (Though. I did read an abridged board books version when I was a kid; it was just a few of the stories but I remember exactly nothing about it.) But I really love Holmes from the adaptations I've seen! I absolutely love the BBC show and the Robert Downey Jr films. I've also seen a few episodes of that really old tv series which are also super fun!! But my absolute, all time favorite adaptation is Young Sherlock Holmes. I was OBSESSED with it when I was younger and used to watch it all the time!! .... And now I want to rewatch it, haha.
2. How does Dr. Watson come to meet and live with Sherlock Holmes? Watson runs into an old friend who asks what he's doing and Watson says that he's looking for lodgings. The friend says it's the strangest thing but Watson is the second person who has said that to him that day. So Stamford, the friend, introduces Watson to the first, Holmes. Holmes has already found the lodgings, he's just looking for a roommate and after a brief interview, Watson takes him up on the offer.
3. What did Sherlock discover about the woman who came to claim the lost ring when he followed her? So this ~woman comes to pick up the ring. She says that the ring belongs to her daughter and she came to pick it up for her. Well, Holmes followed her when she left. She hailed a cab and Holmes hailed one as well and followed her. Except when they reached the destination, her cab was empty???? The destination house belonged to none of the names she had given. So Holmes comes to the conclusion that that wasn't an old woman but a young man in a very impressive disguise.
4. What is Gregson convinced happened in the case after talking to Drebbers landlady? Drebber and his secretary were renting rooms from Mrs. Charpentier. But Drebber was less than the ideal tenant. He drank a lot and one night he tried to convince (and force) Charpentier's daughter Alice to run away with him. Well, Charpentier's son, Arthur, came to her rescue. Okay so both Drebbers and Arthur left. But only Arthur returned. So Gregson is convinced that Arthur followed Drebbers and another altercation happened between them, this time resulting in Drebbers death. He then believes Arthur dragged the body of Drebbers into the empty house. And all the other "clues" were just there to send the police on the wrong trail.
5. Who is Thomas Ferrier and how do he and Lucy get themselves into trouble with the Mormon church? So Thomas Ferrier was with this group of people who were traveling and they ended up, like, lost in the desert??? And they ran out of water and everyone but Thomas and Lucy died of thirst. So Thomas carried Lucy off in search of water. They fell asleep and were found by a group of Mormon travelers. Lucy's mom had died with the others and she wasn't related to Thomas but he basically adopted her and raised her. Well, the Mormon's saved them and took them back to their compound and gave them a home. Except. When Lucy comes of age, she's expected to marry one of the men on the compound. But she falls in love with a non-Mormon. Well, the Mormon's basically start threatening the Ferriers and trying to scare them into marrying her off to one of them. (Who already have multiple wives??? She's supposed to be an additional wife, as a reward for one of the better of men.) Well Ferriers and Lucy's non-Mormon fiance try to take her and escape the compound. And they think they've made it away and are safe. Except the Mormons end up killing Ferrier. And Jefferson, Lucy's non-Mormon fiance, learns she was married to Drebber, one of the Mormons fighting to obtain her hand. Cool.
6. How and why were Drebber and his secretary murdered? So. Lucy ended up dying within a month of her marriage, either from a broken heart from losing her father or from entering into a terrible marriage. And her once fiance, Jefferson Hope, vowed to get his revenge on the two men who had caused her death and fought to marry her: Debber and Stangerson. He followed them and tried for many years to kill them but they always evaded him. The two men eventually parted ways with the Mormon church and began to travel, with Stangerson eventually becoming Drebber's secretary. Hope following them to Europe and just as he was closing in to kill them, he lost them again. England is where he finally managed to track them down and finish the job. He got a job as a cabbie and began to follow them both, hoping to catch them alone. But they went everywhere together. Until one night, Drebber said he had some business to attend to and went off alone. Hope followed him until finally Drebber hailed his cab. Then he took him to the empty house, asked if he remembered him and when Drebber did, Hope made him choose one of the poisoned capsules and watched Drebber die. Stangerson was a little trickier since he was cautious after the death of Drebber. Hope waited outside his hotel but he never emerged so Hope climbed up to his window and woke him early one morning, telling him exactly how Drebber had died and then gave him the same choice of one of the poisoned pills. But Stangerson tried to attack Hope and, in self defense, he stabbed him in the heart. And so with that, Drebber and Stangerson had met their ends and Hope's mission of revenge is at its end. And now Hope can die too since he has a heart condition that has been threatening to kill him for years.
7. How did Sherlock figure it out? Holmes did what Gregson had neglected to do: he looked into the past of Drebber and telegraphed the Cleveland police to inquire into the circumstances connected with the marriage of Drebber. The answer told him that Drebber had applied for protection of the law from Jefferson Hope. He then also learned that Hope had also been present in Europe and had followed Drebber.
8. What did you think of this book? So. I thought this book was okay. I really did like meeting Holmes in print for the first time and I thought that was all really fascinating. But I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style?? This book was really dry and I ended up struggling with it. There were times when I would literally get lost in what I was reading and have to go back and reread. Holmes isn't your quirky detective like Poirot. He's very methodical and, well, dry. So reading his super long descriptions of deductions was honestly kind of a chore?

  Reading Journal
So I read this book in the month we were supposed to read it. (April.....? I want to say....? How does time work again????) And I’m just now getting around to actually posting this. Whoops. So since it’s been a hot minute since I read it, hopefully all the answers are actually correct. I did flip through and try to find the answers but sometimes also struggled a little because details. (And I just have a lot going on right now so BRAIN FOG EXTREME, haha.)
Well, anyway. Overall, I did enjoy this. I liked meeting Holmes and Watson in the books for the first time and this was a really fun case. But I also think I do prefer the screen adaptations more than the books, at this point. The writing style in these is rather dry and I struggled a little with staying focused.
Plus. WHAT IS THAT GIANT LONG TANGENT ABOUT MORMONS?!? I literally thought I was reading the wrong book for a second. I don’t think that entire section was necessary at all? It felt like all of that couldn’t been shortened to, like, a page??? Not, like, 30??? That honestly felt like a Hugo tangent. And it definitely diminished my enjoyment of this book.
So. Overall it was a ~fairly enjoyable reading experience? I’ll definitely be reading more of the books. But I just feel like this story wasn’t exactly what I was expecting? That wasn’t necessarily bad. I just wish that tangent hadn’t been there....? Because other than that, the case was good and interesting!
Anyway. This was a lot of fun! I can’t wait to read the next book on our list!

Hail to the Queens!
(crossposted from Kurtis J. Wiebe’s website)
Tumblr media
THIS IS ME NOW
It was early 2012 when the core concept of Rat Queens came together. I’d been in contact with Roc Upchurch after meeting him randomly on a street corner over the weekend of NYCC in 2011. I’d seen his work on Vescell and was inspired by it. He was making art in a way I’d never seen in a comic series.
While he finished Vescell, we emailed several times, batting around ideas. We’d attempted a small pitch on a concept that I’d originally worked on with Owen Gieni (who, in a strange twist, became a later Rat Queens artist), it was called Goblinettes, and it ultimately didn’t float. Didn’t seem like there was much interest in a story about a three-piece all girl goblin punk band that sang about love and getting along.
We went back to the ideas phase. We both knew we wanted to work on fantasy. And we both knew we wanted to try something fresh with a genre we loved.
Tumblr media
I sat and thought on it awhile. I asked myself all kinds of questions. What did I love about fantasy? What was ridiculous? What was annoying and outdated?
It wasn’t a new thing for me to have female leads in my stories; Debris, The Intrepids, Beautiful Creatures and even Peter Panzerfaust, while predominantly male, had women that are, to date, my favourite I’ve written.
Tumblr media
Having four female leads wasn’t the novel idea, in my opinion. What I wanted to do was have a fantasy adventure story where being a woman wasn’t a thing. And in so many of the fantasy books I’d read, it almost always certainly was.
We did a call and I laid out the idea that I’d come up with in the worst way possible: It’s Lord of the Rings meets Sex in the City. We both laughed. It was a terrible mash, but we both knew what it meant.
That’s where it started. Where it would land, how it would end, we had no idea. Our best guess was five issues and a good looking trade collection.
Rat Queens #1 came out on September 25th, 2013. Five and a half years ago, now.
On that day, my life changed.
Within months, Rat Queens became the most successful project I’d ever worked on. Both in sales and in the acclaim it garnered from an industry, a community that had become so important to me. It was the highlight of success after years of personal struggles that had nearly sapped me of hope and strength.
Tumblr media
I felt like I finally belonged.
And it was good for a while. We always struggled to get the series out on its monthly schedule (I have many thoughts about the industry’s demand on artists, but that’s for another time), but we were creating something we loved and the fans loved in returned. It was the best a creator could ask for.
Since then, it’s been a long and difficult journey. The years following September 25th, 2013 have been a trail through the highest mountains and the darkest caves.
I had a daughter.
I moved seven times. (Yes. Seven.)
I began new comic series’.
I finished several others.
It’s no secret Rat Queens has had its share of controversies. They took a heavy toll, bringing me back to a dark place I thought I’d escaped when this Rat Queens journey began.
You can read about my brush with suicide in the summer of 2016 here: https://kurtiswiebe.com/2016/10/28/this-side-of-suicide/
Tumblr media
Even then, I kept creating new stories with these four women throughout it all. But, I have to be honest, it was getting more difficult with each new iteration. Each new artistic team that came on.
At the end of the day, I had to step back and ask myself some familiar questions: What did I love about fantasy? What was ridiculous? What was annoying and outdated?
This past summer of 2018, I found that I didn’t have the answers I used to. Or maybe I’d already answered them and somehow lost myself along the way.
In that reflection I realized that I’d been burned out on the one thing that once gave me joy and provided for my family.
I was terrified.
And then I knew: it was time to move on.
That fear only grew, but it was the seed to plant a new foundation. I’d wrapped up so much of my identity in Rat Queens; my worth, my voice, and world-view.
Five years is a long time. We all grow and change, day to day, and over the span of five years, I’ve faced many shifts to my status quo.
Those changes excite me, I want to write about them. While that doesn’t mean the Rat Queens can’t be part of the equation, it means that I want to commit the next span of years to these new perspectives that have deeply informed my life.
So, I’m saying goodbye to Rat Queens. For now, and the foreseeable future.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
Rat Queens is still popular. I know fans love these characters, and I’ve always been interested to see what other people would bring to the table with this large cast of characters. There are still a hundred stories that could be told with Betty, Hannah, Braga, Dee and Violet.
With that said, I’m passing on the torch to a new team, a group of amazing creators who will carry on the legacy of the Rat Queens in an exciting and new direction.
Tumblr media
Ryan Ferrier, who has lettered the series since we came back in 2017, will be taking over writing duties. He was absolutely the first choice for me. We share a similar sense of humour and he’s been living with these characters for over a year now. If you haven’t read any of Ryan’s work, I HIGHLY recommend D4ve. It was my first foray into his work, and it’s genius and funny and heartfelt and great.
Our new line artist, Priscilla Petraites, is someone I’ve been watching for years. She has emailed me every year since 2014, always sending me her new portfolio, to show her progress and growth as an artist. I’ve always had an interest in working with her, but could never find the right concept for the collaboration. When I decided to move on from Rat Queens, Priscilla was an obvious choice. And the heavens aligned, schedules collided and Rat Queens is now her baby.
Marco Lesko and Priscilla had worked together on several other projects as a team before coming on to Rat Queens. I’d seen their work together and bringing Marco onto Rat Queens as our colourist made absolute sense. They have an artistic chemistry that drips off the page, and I can’t wait to see them craft their take on the world of Rat Queens.
This new team will be taking over in April, 2019, with their one shot: Rat Queens Swamp Romp, before jumping into their full-time duties with issue 16 in June.
Tumblr media
So. What’s next? And what about current Rat Queens artist, Owen Gieni?
In the past few years, Owen has become like a brother to me. He’s been around through the toughest of times and has always been an honest and stalwart friend. Through our long conversations over the years, we’ve discussed hundreds of theories and philosophies, and even more stories and worlds.
It’s time we did something with them.
2019 is about change. About taking a risk, in art and in life.
Together, Owen and I are founding a creative company; Beast and Bone Studios.
We’re going to be creating a pile of new art, comics and otherwise. We’re finally going to get a start on a series we’ve been talking about since summer of 2017. Plus a few others we’ve been hashing out in the last few months. I cannot wait.
First, I want to thank Jim Valentino, the man who saw something unique in this little series. He backed me through everything, and has supported my decisions, both creatively and professionally, and it’s been a fantastic journey. I call him my second dad for a reason!
And finally, I want to thank every single person out there who’s supported Rat Queens, and more directly, supported me through the past five years. It has never been unappreciated, and the kindness you’ve shown through emails and messages has saved me more than you can know. I will be forever grateful for the fans and to the five Queens who made my current life possible.
Here’s to you, Violet, Dee, Hannah, Braga and Betty.Especially you, Betty. You know you’ve always been my favourite.
Tumblr media
Much love,Kurtis Wiebe
PS: Here’s your first look at Ryan, Priscilla and Marco’s Rat Queens!

Another Cannabis Consumption Cafe Is Coming To West Hollywood
Tanja M. Laden of High Times Reports:
Aeon Botanika will have a cafe, boutique, dispensary, wellness center, and a Moroccan tea lounge.
Recently, the City of West Hollywood, California unveiled the nation’s premier cannabis restaurant, Lowell Cafe. Now, it appears as if the pot-friendly SoCal city is about to have another weed eatery. Scheduled to open in Spring, 2020, Aeon Botanika will be a 7,000 square foot one-stop-wellness-shop with not just a superfoods cafe, but also a cannabis boutique, dispensary, spa, and Moroccan-themed cannabis tea lounge, too.
Aeon Botanika is the brainchild of Nicole Fox, a registered dietitian who trained at UCLA and co-founded two of LA’s earliest medical dispensaries, the Green Goddess and the Higher Path. With a background in functional and integrative medicine, Fox serves on the board of L.A.’s biggest cannabis trade association, the Southern California Coalition, as well as the California Minority Alliance.
“We are in a time when more people are turning to cannabis as a medicine and including it as part of their wellness lifestyle,” said Fox in a press release. “I am thrilled to bring my two passions, healthcare and cannabis, together to create the Aeon Botanika experience. I am beyond grateful to the City of West Hollywood, who has always supported the movement to end the prohibition of this healing plant. We are committed to paying this forward as a social impact company.”

Meanwhile, Aeon Botanika’s co-founder and chief marketing officer, Veena Parekh hails from California and has lived in Amsterdam for the last ten-plus years. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Economy from UC Berkeley and a Master’s degree in Development Studies from Erasmus University Rotterdam, specializing in community development and political economic empowerment.
“We’re not just creating a business; we are building a place of beauty where people can gather, connect, rejuvenate and deepen their practice of wellness in new ways,” said Parekh. “Joy, relaxation, and education are all important dimensions of wellness and the combination of the different spaces we are curating is such a unique opportunity to bring these all together. We believe cannabis can be a catalyst for positive change in individuals and in society; this is the vision we are bringing to life.”
The New Cannabis Café On The Block
Aeon Botanika is being designed by Los Angeles-based Ferrier Architecture Studio, with Keith Greco of the city’s Little Door and Cliff’s Edge responsible for the interiors. Chef Fred Eric of L.A.’s eponymous Fred 62 has been appointed culinary director, responsible for both the cannabis lounge and non-cannabis café, which will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Ritual Coffee Roasters will supply the coffee.

At the same time, a wellness center will offer access to holistic experts, including a dietitian, acupuncturist, massage therapist, and a “functional medicine physician.” The venue will also host a range of community programs including meditation sessions, lectures, panels, and other events.
Aeon Botanika is the first venue to bring together cannabis products and onsite wellness services, as well as a bespoke line of house-grown craft cannabis flower and microdose cannabis wellness product line along with “wild-crafted non-cannabis herbal formulas created to support health goals.”
The establishment was recently granted an Adult Use, Medical and Consumption Lounge license in West Hollywood, and a Microbusiness license for cultivation, manufacturing, delivery, and distribution in the City of L.A. Construction of the weed-themed wellness destination is slated to begin in December.

Tracy Ferrier, The Courier | Rick Maddison
That's how slain Queensland policeman, Senior Constable Brett Forte, 41, is being remembered. Devastated colleagues and friends of Senior Constable Brett Forte have remembered the slain police officer as a loving father and dedicated cop. Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Queensland Minister for Police Mark Ryan, speaks about the shooting of police officer Brett Forte and Rick Maddison. The man who gunned down a police officer before he was shot dead after an overnight siege had "issues" and a "grievance" against police, Queensland's Deputy Commissioner says.
A husband and father who went to work and didn't come home. Maddison killed the senior constable during a car chase west of Brisbane on. THE violent career criminal who shot dead a police officer in Queensland had a "grievance" against the cops, it has been revealed.Rick Maddison, 40, died after a police siege at Seventeen Mile in the Lockyer Valley west of Brisbane.
