Creepy romance books
Okay!
So I didn't expect to be posting again so soon, but I have something I wanna say to more than just my family.
So as I might have mentioned...literally like two minutes ago, I am trying to write.
I do not plan to write romance novels, but I might still want to include relationships in my work.
For that reason, and that reason alone, I went to look for some romance books that include a trope I like.
In doing so I stumbled upon a video of books that use that particular trope.
"Huzzah!" I thought. "At last, a source of bountiful knowledge on this somehow niche topic!"
Imagine my disappointment when the very first book of the video completely bastardizes the trope I was looking into.
It didn't even just do it poorly, it totally corrupted it.
Which is a very funny joke...to me.
The book is called "Corrupt", okay?
What do you want from me, I'm not a comedian.
Anyway, the synopsis of the book is as follows:
Erika I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession. His name is Michael Crist. My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me. But I noticed him. I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away. Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore. Because he’s finally noticed me. Michael Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika. My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway. Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college. In my city. Unprotected. The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out. We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.
Already sounds pretty gross, right? But it gets worse!
Apparently Michael is planning to harm, or even kill Erika, because she somehow got some of his friends arrested?!
Hey dude, hey Michael. Fucking how? Okay? How are you and your buddies, all grown adults by now, gonna hold an 18 or 19 year old girl respnsible for their arrests? Is she a teenage detective? Did I miss that part of the summary or something?
Regardless, Michael gets close to Erika, intending to gain her trust before betraying her to his friends.
But uh oh! Michael falls for her! So now, he has to protect this girl from a situation HE put her in!
Honestly, I feel like a title like "Corrupt", coupled with it's description of "dark romance" perfectly encapsulates the nightmare that must lie between the covers of this book.
I hope to anything that might be listening that people stop feeling the need to write books like this.
Like seriously, just write likeable characters, okay?
I know it's not that hard to write characters that aren't either total dumbasses or awful people!
Just write about two decent people who have a healthy relationship, and let any drama you need to be able to, you know, have a plot, come from other people or situations.
Hell, you could have a romance that fits into another genre!
Superhero romance? Sure, maybe a pair of vigilantes are into each other and their relationship is the focus of the story rather than the crime fighting.
Fantasy romance? Great! Two characters in a magical setting with cool magical crap going on who also love each other, write about that!
Why does every "romance" book have to be a toxic or even abusive relationship, huh?
It's gross, yucky.
Anyway, I think I've gotten that out of my system.
That's all for now,
Tyr

Note
I think Faiz was so succesful bc it was Jdrama but not really risqué. Which is sad bc nexus and metalder are my fav brand of toku - somber and slightly tragic (1/2)
On a different note, what is your fav jdramas with sexy older men aside from the obviously iconic Dorokei? (2/2)
Maybe while we’re at it, favorite sexy older actors? (3/2)
hm. i guess? mainstream tv-tier Interpersonal Drama isn’t exactly a known selling point for little kids, though. inoue just managed it somehow that wily bastard. at least faiz’s nonsense (the schoolyard-esque roundabout of i like her but she likes him but he likes-) was maybe a little more relatable to children than his other soap opera shit.
whenever i get asked about dramas i start to realize how few i’ve actually seen in my life... but in that category i also really like
60 gohan taisakushitsu - this finally got subbed recently and uh. man. did not expect it to be like it was. i mean that in a good way, just kinda thought it’d be a typical legal procedural but it’s very cinematic and tense and raw. if you like handsome grandpas it’s got that content for sure but occasionally he’s also a total pathetic mess going off the deep end so it might not be for everyone
honcho azumi - very cute police detective dad leads his team who all love him to solve some pretty interesting and sentimental crimes. still only seen s1 and for all i know the others aren’t as good but at least i know for sure mr sasaki will still be very cute in them. kamen rider hibiki is here too as his best friend
suits - tried the korean version and it was SO unbelievably dull and then tried the jpn version and was like wow. what a difference. this has actual characters who are fun and likeable in it and doesn’t bore me to death with legal talk. mr oda yuji isn’t technically my type of old guy but he brings a real Charmingly Annoying Man sexiness to the role. whenever he’s onscreen i’m like “oh this character is such a bottom”
yamegoku - kitamura kazuki kinda seems like he never ages so looking it up just now to find he was 46 here is like. seriously?? his character is a former gangster trying to reform other gangsters and help them escape The Business and he’s the stupidest himbo of all time, it’s great
and not a jdrama but if you don’t mind quite a bit of violence please watch a chinese movie called “bodies at rest” i’m obsessed with it
and i’d probably answer that last question with roughly my same list of hot older men i’d like to see in rider https://kabutoraiger.tumblr.com/post/624948572447735808/
but also asano tadanobu and iwaki koichi (ultimate foxy grandpa)

My Top BL for 2017
Hello and welcome to my list of Top BL for 2017, my rough guidelines for choosing manga for the year, are BL that I started reading in 2017, or read mostly in 2017.
Tumblr media
List below the cut. There will be some spoilers
Kashikomarimashita Destiny and Kashikomarimashita Answer by Sachimo
2017 seems to be the year that Omegaverse bloomed, mpreg has been around for decades (for examples, Sex Pistols) but I think it’s only been in the recent few years that an AU where it is feasible has been crafted and expanded to become such a creative force.
There are lots that are troubling in Omegaverse which I won’t go into. But there are lots of themes that fujoshis enjoy: happy ending after suffering, hero alphas saving their male partners, destiny and fate, animalistic bonds that defy rationale, and of course all the cute babies.
Kashikomarimashita has it and, and what’s more BUTLERS in butler uniforms, which is a kink for sure.
It’s high in a lot of BL rankings and for good reason. The nice thing about the two pairs of MC is that it isn’t straightforward and there is defiances of the rules constructed within the universe itself. One couple that are destined to be with each other, and one couple who fights against the odds to be with each other. There is a plot that makes sense in its own context, we see actual character development, especially for Kudou and Miyauchi the second couple which was my favourite couple, and did I mention cute babies? Also Sachimo sensei draws the cutest chibis!

Jealousy by Scarlet Beriko
Do you like your protaganist, sexy, fucked up, and amoral? Jealousy has got you covered.
Rogi, last seen in Yondaime as a rapist, appears again, and this time it is his background story, and boy is it a ride.
Rogi, I’m not even sure he’s likeable, but he’s compelling in the way he just pushes past all the normal barriers in his compulsion to feed his desires.
What I like about Jealousy is it doesn’t really try to sugarcoat the darkside of the Yakuza world, and sensei is not afraid to show the ugly side of the main characters.
Tumblr media
One of things that I  find refreshing is that Rogi got himself a lover that is a bald fat yakuza, Normally this guy would be the butt of all the jokes and act purely as foil for the handsome MC. I’m not saying that he isn’t, but he is not just a 2D character,. He’s not a fool, he knows he’s being played but he still loves Rogi, and I love that we get to see his thoughts and his feelings, it helps make the world so much more real when a sensei puts such care into the non-main characters.
Wolf in the House by Park Ji-Yeon
I feel strangely out of step with the reading trends in that I’m not that into Korean comics, firstly I am not a big fan of full colour comics, I don’t know if it’s information overload, or just what I’m used to, it’s not really my thing. I couldn’t read KS, because the blood and the bruising was just a bit too much.
Wolf in the House, however, is beautiful to look at, making great use of a subdued colour palette, and her drawing style is gorgeous. Everyone is beautiful, while drawn differently, including the bastard ex, who is as handsome as hell. This story  has the interesting premise of a Siberian Husky that becomes man (or is it the other way around) who wants to go to Siberia, but ends up being adopted by the MC. I love the supernatural elements, and the sense of sadness with the situation between the characters. I’m hoping it wraps up well, but also hoping it doesn’t end. I love that I can enjoy this comic on so many levels.

*swoon*
Gakkou no Sensei - Matsumota Kazura
How much heartbreak can you take? Read Gakkou no Sensei to find out.
Welcome to the school of abandoned animals that have somehow taken on human form. We get some comedy value in their daily life, interspersed with the background stories showing how they all ended up in the abandoned school.
Tumblr media
the drawing style is so cute, it makes you want to hug and squeeze everyone of them.
Tumblr media
My favourite is Gin, because I am a sucker for Tsundere types. Just look at that cute smile!
Harukaze no Etranger by Kii Kana
Sequel to Umibe no Etranger, Mio and Shun head back to Shun’s home town, where they meet Shun’s brother Fumi (FUMI DA!). There are many layers to this story, and sensei weaves it all in so deftly. Her panels are always a delight to read, her characters are expressive and lively and she adds lots of little touches, sometimes recalling things from previous chapters and I love that. I am so glad I got to pick up the physical  volumes of this manga!
Tumblr media
Life Senjou No Bokura by Tokokura Miya
Reader, I cried.
The start of this manga was the cutest thing ever, and then I saw the tragedy tag. Maybe how a love can fall apart is what grips me, too realistically.
Tumblr media
Those were my top BLs below are honourable mentions.
Kimi no Yume o Mite Iru by Aruku Kouki
Dream lovers, it was a cute story, the pacing was a bit too fast perhaps, but a good resolution
Tumblr media
Pendulum Kemonobito - Hasumi Hana
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A manbeast x human omegaverse tale. I didn’t think I’d end up here, but I liked the story. there are cute puppies as well in the extras.
Eto Irokoi Zoushi by Isami Matsuo
Man that gets possessed by different zodiac animals. If Fruits Basket was BL basically. Also it was exciting to see the reveal of each animal in their human form and what characteristcs the MC would take on. The character designs are great, and OMG just discovered the bonus chapter
Tumblr media
Joou to Shitateya ( Queen and Tailor )- Scarlet Beriko
Sensei does it again with another beautifully drawn lovely tale of a man looking for a suit and ending up finding love.
Tumblr media
Okay Tumblr is starting to play up, I enjoyed quite a few BL this year, but will just mention a few more.
Cry For Me by Yan Jiu
  - Cutest drawings ever
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kachou Fuugetsu by Shimizu Yuki
It gets a bit messy, and not all the relationships are well developed but there were some great parts
Suzume Favourite by Kuju Siam
I am just a sucker for animals that transform into humans maybe
Tumblr media
Just look at that cute lil sparrow! <3.
Moon and Sun by Abe Akane
- anything by her is worth checking out.
All the fireworks are going off right now! Happy New Year 2018
