Ice Bath

holdlo. 451 words. please note it is NOT implied rem/lo, for clarification.

Normal guys don’t go to Wellston Private High. That’s the rule of nature. Normal guys don’t go to one of the most prestigious high schools in the country without some kind of innate talent, but Holden is significantly More Normal than the rest of the school. He stays comfortably at a high position; not high enough to be a subject of gossip through the rumor mill, but enough that if he stares at someone for long enough, they’ll move out of his way or nervously say hi to him.

His best friend is his forever King of the school. His best friend is pulling away from him, more and more, with each passing day. He’s said his best friend’s name less this week than he has passed him in the hallway. 

Holden sees his best friend in class, ghosts under his eyes, beneath his hands when he writes. Arlo fidgets uncomfortably with the dog tag necklace he keeps under his button-up when he thinks no one is looking. Holden thinks that one day, soon, Arlo will blink without opening his eyes ever again. Thinks that soon, he’ll have to submerge himself in the tub and make himself an ice bath for the Authorities. 

Guys like Arlo are sufficiently Not Normal. Arlo couldn’t kill a man, but could maim someone without blinking an eye in the past. But, he frowns at overblown, unnecessary displays of cruelty now, picking it out of his nails with a pencil instead of digging into it, blood and teeth and all. Holden likes the less cruel Arlo, who's softer with his words and hands, but misses the boy who cracked down on chaos with smooth fists. And he's seen the way Arlo looks at Remi nowadays, the distance between them only multiplying with each rotation around the sun.

But, in those rare moments that they spend together, Arlo looks almost the same as before. The smallest, briefest of smiles on his face from minutes of talking to each other, the kind only a best friend could get.

The smiles get smaller, the frowns get larger, and Holden imagines Arlo's hands dripping black, blood as dark as the Bureau itself. It must be, because why else would ghosts rest on his body with no other footrest? Why else would he flinch when his phone buzzes, looking at the screen like he wants it to crack?

(One day, he gets Arlo coffee, and Arlo looks like he might cry.)

Then, he looks at Arlo. And Arlo looks back at him, through him, like he's a mirage in the snow. Never here.

The ice he makes only grows in the spaces between them. Holden doesn't know how to break it.

headcanon that after rei graduated holden was the only one to stick by arlo’s side and support him. he’s a big dumb loyal guy your honor

at first arlo was, yk, arlo about him. “ah, how can i manipulate this situation to profit off of it” but holden’s actual big dumb nice guy loyalty throws arlo off so hard that he’s like. well damn I guess i’m in love now

Holden learns. He learns comfortably. Not with vigor and passion, not like Blyke and Remi were able to do so easily after witnessing atrocities by their own hand, next to their own hand. But he learns, and he’s good enough at not letting any discomfort show, if he ever feels that at all, because he’s good at taking facts and information as they are and analyzing his privilege that comes with it. He’s patient. Arlo thinks that’s a kindness he has never had. He works in the legal department for a reason. He’s an attorney for a reason.

And for all of his logic, his diction pried open in his mind and picked apart and glued together in two seconds, Holden still somehow has the emotional intelligence to not try and find a solution for what Arlo has been feeling. Understands that there isn’t a solution because it doesn’t exist. That despite Aunt Val’s world, there can never be one true solution to a problem no matter how much the few at the top try to squeeze it out.

The days slip by so fast, even with that knowledge.

Valerie dies. Arlo grieves.

What do you think the main uno characters would look for in a romantic partner personality wise?

Uuuuuuuuhhhhmmmm I’m not super into romance but let me think

Arlo- can’t imagine he’d be into romance to be honest. I like holdlo but even that was irony that spiraled into unironically liking it. I think he would want someone he can boss around. Possess even.

Sera- too busy dealing with her friends insanity you have to be normal and well adjusted. She’ll fucking leave you.

John- have to have a decent amount of empathy. I think he would be too disturbed by someone who doesn’t.

Remi- Also needs to have a lot of empathy. Someone who can tolerate her periods of being a little obsessed with something. A bit of an anchor type

Blyke- Has to be about as passionate about justice and morality as he is. Also because I can’t imagine he dated someone other than Isen and Remi so I guess they would have to tolerate that he cares about them way more.

Isen- ugh this one’s hard. Wants someone who can take a joke and he can mess around with a little. Needs to be his friend and not just some person he’s dating.
