My quest with #photographingamerica🇺🇸 is to never photograph models,only real people doing what they do everyday. This is Albert Thorn a cattle rancher from West Texas. Albert and his wife Sheri invited me into their home to show me Sheri’s vintage John Deere collection. Meeting real people telling me about their lives is priceless to me. On November 20, 2016 I made this image at 6:20pm. This beautiful Native American woman one of the elders and I were walking to join the rest of the elders at the sacred fire. We talked along the way of how things were coming to a head with the oil company and the pipeline. She was kind enough to let me photograph her in the evening light. She commented about my willingness to listen and not just randomly photograph the situation and invited me to photograph and attend ceremonies that others could not. Two days later I was involved in a violent confrontation on the bridge over the river, a night I’ll never forget.. Rubber bullets, teargas, fire hoses putting water on protesters under sub freezing temperatures. Standing Rock still faces water pollution problems today! Alvin Lindquist survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. Now 102 years old Alvin known as Stub to family and friends sat down with me and described what it was like during the attack. He was stationed on the USS Tennessee which was hit but survived. He recalls coming up on deck after it was hit and seeing the Red Dots on the Japanese planes. He said at that point they were under machine gun fire and were fighting for their lives.. Stub is looking forward to his 103rd birthday in December.. A few years back, traveling home from out west I met William a self proclaimed West Virginia Mountain Man. William had an interesting past, he graduated from the University of Delaware and was Joe Biden’s neighbor!
