Dear Trick or Treat Author,
Dearest potential author,
What a wonderful time of year!
If you're looking at this thinking, "what's trick or treat?" then I refer you to the Dreamwidth info post here, the AO3 page here, and if you're seriously considering it then you 100% have to look at the requests app here. But, in short, it's a low stress fic/art exchange with a 300-word minimum in which you both give at least one trick (horror, occult, supernatural, scary, etc) or treat (sweet, sexy, fluffy, etc) fanwork to your recipient and receive one or more in return.
Back to the letter!
There isn't much in here that isn't in my signup, but you can have a look at all my previous letters using the tags! Every letter going back seven years is under dear author letter, and specific fandoms and some pretty pretty gif sets under the fandom tags.
Thank you very much for thinking of writing for me. I hope you have a lot of fun doing it. I will be delighted with the result no matter what!
If you would like to write Halloween-flavoured fic, I would ask that it be canonically appropriate. (They're probably not trick-or-treating in costume with carved pumpkins in ninth/tenth century England, but All Hallows' Eve would be a great place to start. On the other hand, I can see Thor really loving a modern Halloween.) Some Halloween prompts are given for some fandoms. All prompts are only suggestions, please write whatever sparks creative joy for you! If you want to dance close to one of my DNWs, I might be open to it so by all means get in touch through the mods. I would just like to avoid gifts that focus on any of these things.

Fandoms & Prompts:
1. The Last Kingdom (TV)
Aelswith & Uthred of Bebbanburg Aethelflaed Lady of Mercia/Uhtred of Bebbanberg Aethelstan & Osferth Alfred the Great & Uhtred of Bebbanberg Aelswith Aethelflaed Lady of Mercia Aethelstan Alfred the Great Beocca Finan Osferth Sihtric Uhtred of Bebbanburg
I asked Netflix to “Surprise Me” this summer and watched the first few minutes of this. Then the first episode. Then the first season. Then I’d devoured the whole thing in a fortnight, couldn’t pick what to watch next and started again. And I’m reading the books. (Halfway through Sword Song as of this morning.) This series caught my imagination in unexpected ways.
I really enjoy the way different characters think/plot, their diverse values and worldviews. How Danes view death (unafraid of death but not keen on the waste of men/expecting to die with their sword in hand) and how Saxons do (a preference for dying peacefully in bed with priest/family by their side), how their religion and gods influence them, the idea of destiny. Death is a constant presence in this world, in a way it’s not in ours. Stiorra says something to her father about death coming for her mother too quickly for Gisela to see, and so Stiorra was ready and unafraid. (Terrible paraphrasing.) But death is always there, a hair’s breadth away (the snipping of a thread by the spinners) whether by violence or disease or childbirth or misadventure. Destiny is all/fate is inexorable.
I was going to split into trick prompts or treat prompts but so many could go either way. Uhtred and friends walk the line between genius and disaster so often. I am also open to the appearance of any other characters at the author’s pleasure.
My likes of missing moments, banter/bickering, character death fic, found family, unlikely friendships and outsider POV all seem extra relevant here.
- Life after Osferth? - Osferth and Aethelstan “living the bastard life” (and the wider group having a new baby monk to tease instead of Osferth). - Shadowwalkers? - One of Uhtred’s plans goes wrong. - Aethelflaed chooses a different path (with Erik, with Uhtred, anything away from her destiny as Alfred’s daughter). Does it go right or does it go wrong? - A missing moment for Uhtred and Aethelflaed. Does she ever break her oath, or come close to it? - Separately or additionally: Aethelflaed is caught breaking her oath. - How does Aelswith enjoy her room with a sea view? Does she continue to harangue Uhtred? She’s hated him for so long, he’s not fond of her, and that flips. Or does it? S5 Aelswith is so fun. My thanks to whoever nominated this ship. - Alfred’s perspective on some of Uhtred’s nonsense? Alfred’s reflections on his deathbed? I haven’t requested the / ship, but I did request the characters and I could read it, or just a one-sided version or foolish moment. Love, hate, madness, loyalty, obligation, respect, scorn – they’re one messy tangle of thorns for these two. - I enjoy fics featuring character death or its aftermath and every tagged character loses someone or is lost themselves. - I could read more of Beocca and young Uhtred. (Osbert!) What did Uhtred learn from Beocca rather than Ragnar? - Is Uhtred ever haunted by his ghosts? - HALLOWEEN: Its origins are in a time to remember the dead, including martyrs, saints and all faithful departed Christians. How is this observed or endured?
2. North and South (UK TV)
Margaret Hale/John Thornton Margaret Hale John Thornton Hannah Thornton Nicholas Higgins
I’ve requested this more times than I can count, because it’s one of my favourite baby fandoms. I love the conflict between the three worlds in this novel/series (Margaret’s, John and Hannah’s, Nicholas’) and how they come to understand each other better by the end of the story. And it’s pretty hard not to ship Margaret/John. Also, I have such incredibly strong train scene feelings because that’s so horribly unlikely, the PDA, an unmarried woman travelling to the other end of the country from her family with a single man! Shocking. So I absolutely adore post-canon fic here.
There’s so much pride in all these characters, in different ways. All look down on each other too. I could read more about that.
- Post-canon train scene consequences, for good or ill. - What if Margaret (or John) was seriously injured in the riot? - We don’t see a second/successful proposal on the show. Does one happen? Does the first go differently? - Something about John and Hannah’s backstory, the failure and death of John’s father, pulling him out of school and repaying the debts? - John, Hannah and Nicholas have tasted poverty – or at least true difficulty. Margaret might think she has, but she has not. Is there conflict there? - What if Frederick Hale came to post-canon Milton? Do any of these characters visit him in Spain? - Margaret finding her place in post-canon Milton? At home, in the mill, in town. - Any more flavour/colour of life in Milton.
3. The Witcher (TV)
Geralt of Rivia/Jaskier Calanthe Fiona Riannon Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon Geralt of Rivia Jaskier Mousesack Yennefer of Vengerberg
I have also played Witcher 3 (the main story, I’m half way through Hearts of Stone, not played Blood and Wine yet) and started the books (although I didn’t get on with them). So if you want to throw in other canon references, I’m probably going to be quietly delighted in a self-satisfied “ooh, I get that!” kind of way.
I’ve tagged the characters I’m most interested in, but there are none I wouldn’t want to see. I also prefer Geralt & Jaskier to Geralt/Jaskier but I am happy reading both. I would prefer to avoid shipping Ciri romantically with any of these characters, but otherwise anything else goes.
Again, many of these prompts could go for tricks or treats. Pile the bodies high and make them suffer or wrap them in thick blankets and keep them warm and cosy by a good fire, both are excellent!
- Non-human Jaskier - Emotional support bard Jaskier! - Anything with music and singing - Truth spells/compulsions - Platonic intimacy - Life on the path - Magic gone wrong/the laws of magic/someone has unexpected magic - Canon divergence – Ciri finds someone else first during/after S1, not Geralt (Jaskier, Yennefer, another character) - Post-canon for S2 - Mousesack lives! - Missing moment/pre-canon for Ciri & Calanthe & Mousesack (& Eist?) - Geralt and Jaskier have an adventure - Any two or more characters have an adventure! - Facing a monster from the canon’s bestiary/fulfilling a contract – either a short incident or a longer odyssey. - Character comes back wrong! - The nature of destiny. - Exploration of Geralt’s wish and its consequences - HALLOWEEN: is there a Halloween equivalent on the continent? How is it celebrated? How do these characters mark it? There are real monsters and terrors and ghosts in this world.
4. Downton Abbey
Edith Crawley & Mary Crawley Edith Crawley/Anthony Strallan Mary Crawley/Matthew Crawley Thomas Barrow/Guy Dexter Anna Bates Beryl Patmore Cora Crawley Daisy Mason Edith Crawley Gwen Dawson Mary Crawley Mrs Hughes Sybil Crawley Thomas Barrow
- Did anyone else hear Guy Dexter’s offer to Barrow and think “what the fuck that is too good to be true run Thomas run”? Because I did. There are a thousand ways that could go horribly, terribly wrong, and almost none in which it could go right. (Period-typical homophobia, and classism, they’re doubly fucked.) But Thomas can be a romantic and is open to taking risks and definitely isn’t happy in service even as butler, so maybe he’d take the offer. I’d be open to reading any outcome of that decision. - Either Bates (or later Anna) is convicted for murder! And hanged, no miracles! What happens then? - How did Mrs Hughes and Mrs Patmore first meet? Were they both in their senior roles at the top of their departments then, or did they work their way up together? - What if the Kemal Pamuk episode went differently? For Mary, for Thomas, or for Anna. - Any missing moments. - How do the downstairs staff keep in touch with their families, with only one half day off each week? - The inevitable passage of time, upstairs and downstairs. - How did Cora feel when she first arrived in England? Happy or horrified?
5. Marvel Cinematic Universe
Darcy Lewis/Loki Darcy Lewis Loki Love Morgan Stark Sif Thor Valkyrie
I would enjoy fic at any point in the MCU timeline, not just Phase Four.
Alright, so this is pretty Thor heavy. I think it’s because I’ve only recently seen Love and Thunder and still have feelings, and once upon a time got hit over the head with a really, really excellent Darcy/Loki fic and I’ve been craving more ever since.
The outlier here is Morgan Stark, because I wonder how she copes after her father’s death, how she grows up. I mean, the dead dads club is definitely a thing – if you know, you know – but what’s it like to be a member so young? And she comes from an exceptional background, and Tony’s relationship with his father scarred him. How does Morgan’s relationship with her father – even if that relationship is absence and grief – scar her? Or go fluffy, where other characters support and raise her because it takes a village.
But back to the Thor characters:
What is it like to be ordinary amongst superheroes? Genuinely ordinary. How do these characters live up to (or down to) others’ expectations? Anything, anything at all, for Darcy Lewis/Loki. Idfic, magical accident, punishment/imprisonment, at any point in canon. “Nobody else can kill you, that’s my job” kind of protectiveness? Cancer fic for Jane? The movie somehow ignored its psychological effect on her. I would like to see more of Love, for good or ill, and this odd new family and role to play. How do the worldview and perspective of the Asgardian characters compare to the humans around them? Does that lead to happiness or heartache, favour or disaster? HALLOWEEN: Any of these characters celebrate Halloween, in either an Asgardian way or in the way we would. Do they take it to the absurd?
6. Bridgerton (TV)
Anthony Bridgerton/Kate Sharma Anthony Bridgerton Benedict Bridgerton Daphne Bridgerton Edwina Sharma Eloise Bridgerton Kate Sharma Lady Danbury Penelope Featherington Violet Bridgerton
Okay, so, S2 was not quite what I was expecting, and it wasn’t a terribly close adaptation of the book, but it was still a lot of fun. I was very, very “what the fuck” from the end of episode four right through to the end of the season, peaking in episode six with some what the actual FUCK, and basically watched it in one sitting on release day and into the night. So, please, play with that.
I have read books 1-4 but noped the fuck out after the end of book four because some of the writing was so poor – it was idfic to a degree that I couldn’t tolerate in a “professional” novel. That said, I am 100% there for idfic in fandom.
Unwanted consequences from the night in the gazebo Kate leaves for India Lady Danbury’s backstory Violet Bridgerton is displaced as Countess and from her family home Eloise and Penelope’s friendship and falling out Benedict Bridgerton gets at the tea again Anthony and Edwina get married and have immediate regret! (There’s no easy way out!) The charmed life breaks for one or more of the characters and they have an unpleasant brush with the real world
7. Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë
Jane Eyre & Adele Varens Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester Adèle Varens Edward Rochester Jane Eyre
This is my favourite classic novel, that I’ve reread every few years since reading an abridged version as a girl, most recently for Yuletide 2020. And my understanding and perception has changed so dramatically as I’ve seen more of the world myself. Rochester is more bad guy than good guy and that Jane Eyre lies as a narrator and is as prejudiced and superior as those she crititcises for the same qualities. But I still love her, and that she says she got a happy ending. That doesn’t mean it has to stay happy!
What if the Thornfield wedding isn’t interrupted? (I'm writing this myself too, very slowly.) Does Jane come to see Rochester as a villain? Does she find herself corrupted, tarnished or lessened in his eyes in some way when he comes to marry/possess her and the sharper, darker side of his character turns on her once she’s off her pedestal? Does Jane resent being Rochester’s carer, his eyes and hands? If they have children, what does that do to Adele’s place in the family? Is she beloved sister or unwanted burden? (Any POV here – hers, Rochester’s, an outsider. I can’t see Jane considering her a burden but I could perhaps see Jane being torn in too many directions and having no time left for Adele, leaving her bereft.) What if Adele’s mother returned to collect her, or for some other (nefarious) purpose? Post-canon happiness? Post-canon unhappiness? A missing moment between the interrupted wedding and Jane fleeing Thornfield? How does Rochester discover she’s missing? How does Adele find out? How do they both react? What is that day like?
8. The Godfather (Movies)
Michael Corleone/Apollonia Vitelli Apollonia Vitelli Kay Adams Michael Corleone
Apollonia and the American dream: what does she actually want? Is Michael a way to get it? (Children, comfort, fortune, adventure, love, other?) What does Kay want? Compare the women, be thoughtful or go dark. I’m always intrigued by Kay’s Catholicism, especially in the book. The movie’s ending happens too, but then Kay goes to church with Mama Corleone and prays for Michael’s soul. Michael’s grief at losing both women in his life, in very different ways. A missing happy moment for any of these characters or either couple. A contrast between weddings – Connie’s, Apollonia’s, Kay’s, others. What if Apollonia had lived, and met Kay? What if Apollonia lives? I feel like Kay makes a “better” American wife for Michael, in the world he wants to move in. Would the path have unfolded differently with a different woman at his side? Does the ghost of Apollonia haunt Michael at later points in his life?
9. The West Wing
Ainsley Hayes Charlie Young CJ Cregg Donna Moss Evelyn Baker Lang Jed Bartlet Josh Lyman Leo McGarry Sam Seaborn Toby Ziegler
Okay, so, I ship Josh/Donna pretty hard and otherwise tend to read canon relationships and gen here, but I’ll read anything I can believe. And this is a 300 word minimum exchange (I know, my prompts don’t always seem to reflect that!) so just a moment of another non-canon ship would be fun.
Gaza angst! Why did Ainsley leave? What if the S1 shooting went down differently? A missing moment with any combination of characters. Platonic intimacy! Pre-canon scenes or first meetings for any of the characters that we don’t see on screen. Or post-canon – what happens next for different characters? Reflecting on the passage of time. Treating one another like family HALLOWEEN: Do they mark Halloween in the West Wing? Even informally? Or does someone try, but it's difficult to do while still being taken seriously as a professional. Or do they celebrate Halloween in the Santos administration?
10. Stardew Valley
Emily Grandpa Krobus Marlon Maru Player Robin Sandy Sebastian Shane Witch Wizard
I first played this game within days of its release and I’ve played it through at least once a year ever since. I’m currently challenging myself to complete the Community Center in Y1, max points on Grandpa’s Evaluation in Year 2, and 100% Perfection by the end of Year 3. I’m on track so far, around Spring 14 Y2. It’s given me lots of fresh ideas and questions. Mild preference for female player, but only mild. - “My name’s not really Sandy, you know. It’s just good for business.” WHAT? - “The elemental wars have long since finished,” says Wizard. What were they? - And what about the current war with the Gotoro Empire, that Kent fought in? Does it come to Stardew Valley? Does it touch the villagers’ lives? The farmer’s? Has anyone won the Stardew Hero award before? - Clint is such a “nice guy” he tells us. I like Clint, but there’s fun to be had there for an author. He clearly adores Emily, but he’s awkward and unsure. What’s Emily’s side of it? For good or ill. - Marnie and Lewis sitting in a tree (or that truck outside Lewis’ house), K-I-S-S-I-N-G! Do they get caught in the act? By whom? Does their secret come out? What about the lucky purple shorts? Does Lewis lose his job? (Is he even elected anyway? Opposed in any way?) Or do people take Marnie’s side, that there’s nothing to hide, why is he such an arse? Does he have other secrets? Why is he ashamed of Marnie? - You know, I think that farmer used to have kids. What happened to them?? And now the farmer’s divorced but their ex doesn’t remember them at all? And the ex doesn’t remember the kids? All is not right on the farm, and villagers worry. - Witch/Wizard: what’s their history? How did it start/end? How does it impact the town? Do Caroline and Abigail have something to do with it? Grandpa? - Actually, what the hell was going on with Caroline and the Wizard? - I could enjoy a story about unexpected friendships between any of these characters. - What was the story with Sebastian’s dad, and how Robin came to be with Demetrius in the valley? Did Sebastian’s dad live in the valley? (Was Sebastian’s dad Grandpa and he’s the player’s uncle?) - Does anyone ever leave the town? Or are they forever cursed to remain and not age, a bit like the town in Once Upon a Time? - I could always read more about Shane and his struggles, for good or ill. - Sebastian has his issues too. Does he come to any harm in his solitary emo sulking around stormy beaches and atop mountains? Or do good things happen to him? - Do Sebastian and the farmer, or any other character, go on any more bike rides? - Some angst or hurt/comfort around a wounded farmer? Lost and trapped in the mines, or found and nursed back to health? Stranded/shipwrecked on Ginger Island? - HALLOWEEN: Shenanigans or supernatural occurrences at the Spirit's Eve festival. Do any of the monsters in the mines come to the surface and roam the mountain or desert? Trick or treating in Pelican town? Or any number of other things, sweet, sexy or black.

Thanks very much of thinking for writing for me, dear author. I hope it brings you joy!

Chapter 5 Truths unspoken
Tumblr media
a/n apologies for the slow update! In this chapter we will see the motives of the Celts a little more light shed on Tarian’s past and some more FinanxTarian time. This is a direct continuation from chapt 3 Tarian leading Finan away hand in hand. Major S03 spoilers and language warnings
Let's pretend I told you what I wanted Make believe it fell within my reach Would there be a place for what I hoped for? In the end would there be a place for me? ...show me what to do I get by on nothing as long as something keeps me close to you Black lab-close to you
Finan
When she let go to fetch some ale Finan was acutely aware of how much colder he felt,  how he already missed such a simple guesture that it left his hand tingling. By the time she returned with a pitcher he regained his composure.
"Well Finan I may have sworn an oath without knowing what is going on but swear it I did. I've never sworn an oath to one person but I'm fairly sure you don't back out when the going gets tough." she said simply.
Finan ran his hand through his hair and sighed what kind of people were Celts if they didn't believe in oaths and the promise of their honour and word? It mattered little Tarian was in the here and now and what ever she was running from was of little consequence. He debated on reaching for her hand again but instead to the beverage she offered and took a big gulp.
"It's no short story Tarian nor for the faint hearted." he said, for the first time there was no humour in his voice. Where did he even start?
"Do I look feint of heart?" she laughed.
"No I s'pose not. I don't even now where ta begin to be honest wit ya."
"The start. Osferth mentioned you and Uhtred were...well were.." she seemed to struggle with the last of her sentence. He didn't want her pity and he didn't want to feel the shame,  the inhumanity of it all again.
"When we were on the slave ship. " he finished for her.
"Yes." she replied softly.
Finan new sooner or later they would have this conversation it was inevitable. She was running from her past as was he the only difference was it was in his dreams.
"Righ' so Uhtred and another Saxon man by the name of Halig were betrayed and sold to same ship as I under a bastard named Sverri. After several failed attempts we were eventually freed by Uhtred's brother Ragnar under the orders of Alfred. Ragnar and his woman Brida were taken prisoner by Alfred after the Danes were defeated at Ethandun." Finan began. "But the funny ting is if Uhtred had never been sold I probably woulda died on that ship." he laughed bitterly. Finan paused to take another sip. He wouldn't wish slavery on his worse enemies-no that's bloody lie i'd send everyone of those bastards to that ship.
Finan had been looking into his mug when Tarian reached for his hand. There was no pity in his eyes he thanked the virgin mary for but rather something else burning behind those beautiful green eyes that he often found himself lost in. Finan caressed her fingers neither of them letting go as if the very action gave him the strength to continue. Uhtred and himself very rarely spoke of their time in slavery. It was over they had survived it there was nothing else to say on the matter. He continued telling her how he made good on his promise and killed the slave master  how they went on to rescue the woman he later then went on to marry- Gisela the sister of the man who had been responsible for his slavery in the first place. That Uhtred had promised another year's service to Alfred,  how he had given of them a choice to follow him or not. He told her his confrontation with Guthred,  of their journey to Dunholm how he was of Uthred and Ragnar's vengeance and the rescue of their sister.
"I was surprised he didn't kill the bastard. Brida the woman who turned up today she's ballsy I'd say she woudn loved ta of killed him herself. You'd probably like her or wanna kill her. She's that kind of woman." he laughed to himself reciting her nickname for Guthred. The atmosphere was lighter now and she was still holding his hand. "Did the lady Aethelflead tell ya of what happened to her with the brothers?" This part of the story wasn't a necessity nor did Finan feel it was his place to say.
"Yes she had mentioned her kidnapping. Poor woman I can't imagine what that was like. But she earned herself a reptuation that night. Tales of her battle prowess that night spread as far as our lands." Tarian replied. They laughed a little while Finan the great story teller that he was renacting Aethelred after waking up in a pig sty.
"She left that part out!" Tarian nearly choking on her ale. Finan without a moments thought wiped the spittle from her face with a table cloth. Tarian looked down was she blushing or was that the firelight? Did every touch set his body alight as it did his? She held his gaze and in that moment the world ceased to exist.
Laughter from the other side of the room brought them back to reality and Finan continued his story right up until the exchange of Skade for Aetheflead and the cursing of Uhtred once again.
The hall grew quieter and colder Finan had spent several hours telling her the events that lead up to now. She said very little and it seemed nothing could shock her which was a relief but did he expect anything else? She was a warrior after all. These pass months he had made it known he wanted a woman and not just an endless string of tavern wenches at that. Finan new in his heart of hearts he wouldn't be with a pious Saxon woman who'd flinch at the mere sight of blood and now it seemed God had delivered a heathen warrior to their doorstep. Fate Uthred would call it. He watched her get up to stand in front of the dwindling fire. There was something he needed to know of her though.
"Why were your people trying to kill ya?" he asked softly joining her.
Tarian pressed her lips together frowning into the fireplace. "It is a long story and one i am not even sure of myself." She turned round to face him "How did you come by to be a slave?"
He had wondered if she would ask that question and that she had asked it Finan wasn't sure if he wanted to answer it or not. Looking around the hall he saw that most of the men had replied,  "that m'dear is a story for anotha' time. It's gettin' late and we've a long journey tomorra."
Finan offered to walk her back to the room she shared with Liliwen. "It's on me way back anyway." The silence was not an uncomfortable one but it wasn't exactly at empty either. There was so much he wanted to know of her and to tell her. Finan suspected she was the same. He hadn't seen her like this before as if walking on hot coals unsure of what to say, she would open her mouth to speak then close it again and bite on her lip.
In no time at all they reached her room both of them pausing at the door. Tarian had yet to look him in the eyes. "Something you wish to say?" Finan chuckled.
"Sorry? Oh yes goodnight Finan, "she turned to walk away when he gently reached out to her.
"Tarian?" he frowned.
"Yes?"
He closed the space between them in half a step his left hand cupping the side of her cheek thumbing it gently. Those eyes those lips Gently he raised her up to meet his gaze. "Tarian?" her name was all he needed to say. She nodded ever so slightly and his lips came crashing down on hers. Her arms wrapped around his neck and she pulled him closer to her. Finan had intended on taking this slowly if she felt the same but that plan went out the proverbial window as she returned his affection with undisclosed desire. His hands dropped to her waist pulling her even closer, working their way up her tunic, his cold hands on her bare skin only encouraged her further. If they kept going at this rate anyone walking by would be sure to find them in a state of undress. Finan didn't care and by the looks of it Tarian didn't either. He could feel himself growing harder,  Tarian was pressed so tightly against him she was was sure to feel it too. Rather than repel her it seemed to driver her on, kisses were faster and her fingers ran through his hair his shoulders his neck it was if she couldn't quite decide where or how or what.
"Tari..?" sound of her door creeping open brought them back down. Finan jumped back as if he had been burned and Tarian flattened her hair and pulled her tunic down. "Tari is that you?" Liliwen's sleepy voice called out her half opened eyes adjusting to the hallway torches.
"Fin?" she yawned noticing the Irishman first on the opposite wall.
"Hello lil one. Did we wake ya?"
"Tar-"
"I'm here Lil" Tarian replied.
"You...late. Dont you go somewhere morning?" she rubbed her eyes,  mumbling in broken English she yawned again.
Tarian crouched down. "Tomorrowing morning. Yes. I am late. It is time for sleep indeed. Say goodnight to Finan."
"Nigh' nigh' Fin." she yawned taking Tarian by the hand she pushed her way back into the room,  Tarian giving Finan wordless goodnight and smile.
Finan nodded and made his way down the corridor after the door had shut. Holy mother of Jesus he thought to himself running his hands through his hair. Oh sweet Jesus.
Tarian’s POV
The sun had not risen but she had woken. Liliwen’s snores had woken her and Tarian marvelled at how someone so small could take up so much of the bed for she was barely able to lie flat on her back without falling off the edge. Tarian smiled to herself touching the lips that had passionately kissed only mere hours ago. What was she doing? Should she even be entertaining this? It was just a kiss. Now that she had a taste of him she new she wanted more as did he that much was obvious. Smiling to herself she got up sleep was not going to come again she knew that and besides there was much to prepare. Tarian dressed herself in the clothes and armour that had been provided for her. Boots and cloak on daggers attached she made her way to the stables and then on to the forest. She would not be warrior nor die a warrior's death without the body paint that showed the gods just who she was.
Tarian had been trotting through the forest her eyes sharp for the isatis tinctoria plant -surprised it grew here- she felt it. Someone was following her. Tarian knew she fought better on her feet than horse back so she dismantled. Were her people still here? Watching her every move? Or was it Danes? The full moon was both an advantage and a hindrance as she made her her way into the thicker woods. They were so close now. So close she could nearly here them breathing. One was certainly within reach but were there more? 1 2 3... She spun round dagger unleashed and it met a Celtic shield. "Tarian!" the voice cried out from behind the shield. Recognising that voice she prepared to fire the second for she had recently aquired a third. Yet she hesitated. "Why are you still here Arthfael?! Come to finish what your assassin started?" she spat. "That was not on my orders." Arthfael replied from behind the shield. "Give me on reason why I should believe anything you say!" "If I wanted you dead child you would be." Tarian snorted. His words were not a comfort despite how true they were. "Put down your dagger child there is much to discuss and very little time to discuss it." "How many more are out there?!" "None I came alone. I have been watching you since you left the estate. I would have killed you already if I wanted you dead." Tarian sighed. She should've known. Arthfael despite his age was one of the best archers in their kingdom and he done her grandfather a great service during his reign. Tarian sheathed her dagger. "Speak your peace." Arthfael lowered his shield taking out the dagger he walked towards her handing it back on the promise she would not attempt to kill him again. "Your assassin has been dealt with." "Who was it?" "According to Arawn it was a warrior of Dyfed by the name of Gwenlith." "Arawn?" Tarian asked Arthfael nodded both of them knew the man was not to be trusted. "Her husband had died in a manner similar to what would have been your fate. You had the good sense to teach Liliwen a thing or two." "Yes it saved my life as did she." The was a pause when Arthfael did not speak  Tarian added. "Is this what you risked your life to tell me?" Arthfael laughed "No child. You are being watched. Every step you make." "So order them home." "While those currently here are mine more will come. Everyone has an interest in the kingdom's take over since the death of the your grandfather. You should now your mother's brother has fallen." "What? How?!" "Illness." "Illness?!" "It is suspicious yes. His heir was is too young and your uncles are now fighting for the throne. Everyone is looking for you as your marriage may will settle the dispute." "Marry one of my uncles?! How would me marrying settle any of this?" The very thought disgusted her but it was not unheard of in their lands. "It's not just your uncles who see take over. There are others from Gywnedd and Dfyed who all say they have a claim." Tarian scoffed at the idea. "And for this I was nearly killed?! Surely I am not the only woman with an apparent connection to the throne eligible for marriage?" "No you are not but you are the best prospect. You battle prowless has garnered much attention not to mention your father." Tarian stared at him stunned. He had never mentioned her father before in fact no one had mentioned him-ever. How Tarian came to be about on this earth was never spoken of. "My fath-" "Yes the great Jarl Jurgen. You didn't think it was chance those Danes were able to take you did you?" Tarian remembered the events of that day and had at some stage realised it was a trap. "So it was a set up by whom and why?" "I have some theories." Arthfael sighed "But the most plausible one is that your father offered a great reward for your return and whoever had organised this clearly got wind of it." "Why would a great Danish lord want his bastard child-a woman at that- from a slave that badly?" "You are not a bastard." "I-I'm wh-" "You are not a bastard."  Arthfael replied. "Explain. Please." her voice was barely that of a whisper. "After your mother was taken it was sometime before negotiations begun. As typical with Danes they asked for too much. Your uncle Merfyn who had inherited our land from your grandfather declined. He knew he was going to have a fight on his hands to keep his crown so he told the Danes no." "Shit eating coward." "I offered to rescue your mother. I said I would shadow walk-I believe the Saxons call it? And kill everyone of them. Merfyn wouldn't allow it. Your mother was my greatest friend and her brother wouldn't even let me rescue her." "Probably worried about the threat if she married or-" "Exactly. We had many battles in the upcoming weeks two attempts on his life directly. By the time I could get to your mother she was pregnant with you. I journeyed to their stronghold and waited days and nights I knew how much she loved the forest-you are so much like her" he reached out to rub her hair. "She was picking berries with your father and his guard. She was happy laughing stroking her swollen belly as did he. I left her a message on the tree and she came one night alone. Your beloved mother told me she had been free to leave a long time ago but chose to stay. She knew the political upheaval and despite your brother quite happy to leave her in the hands of the enemy she did not wish to endanger his life or rule by returning. So she stayed." "She's a better woman than I. I would have had his head." Arthfael laughed "Well you are part Dane." "So the night we were rescued." "You weren’t rescued. Your mother loved her husband that I am sure of. I went bac once or twice to see her always in secret of course. You were both so happy and healthy. You look so much like her in beauty and in battle. That temperament however" he teased as they both laughed. Tarian's face sobered "Then who is responsible for her death? And why is my father only coming for me now?" "I know not but I shan’t rest ‘till I find out. As for your father well you are now of age and perhaps he has heard of the threat to your life. Who knows of his reasons? One thing is for certain you cannot ignore this forever." A twig snapped in the distance. Footsteps approaching. Arthfael held his arms up in the air as he felt the end of a sword in his back. "I am no threat to you Saxon." he said in their language to the surprise of Tarian but what surprised her even more was the man on the other end of that sword. "Who are you and why are you in the land of Mercia Celt?" The voice belonged to that of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. "He is a friend Lord." Tarian replied yet Uhtred still had his sword pointed at the elder's man back. Should Arthfael resist Uthred would kill him. Tarian eyes wide stared at Arthfael silently pleading with him. The older man was quite unpredictable but he was not stupid. Surely he knew resisting against the land's greatest warrior could only mean death. "Correct me if I am wrong Tarian but was it not your own people who tried to kill you?" "Yes Uhtred it was-but not on my orders" Arthfael said exasperated. Tarian wondered if he was starting to tire of saying that. Uhtred looked to Tarian who nodded. "Is there any danger to the lady of Mercia or those who reside with her?" "Believe it or not Dane Slayer  the Celts have no interest in your activities provided they stay on this side. The perpetrator has been dealt with I have no quarrel with you or those under your protection and it is mostly my people that watch these woods." "Why do you linger?" "Has Tarian sworn an oath to you?" Arthfael asked Uhtred ignoring his question. Tarian who was beginning to get annoyed with them acting like she wasn't here responded. "Yes Arthfael I have sworn an oath to this man and I will not go back on it. Liliwen is to stay she is safest here they have sworn to keep her safe." Uhtred looked and Tarian with surprise. Did he honestly doubt her? Tarian felt hurt rather than offended at the thought. He still did not trust her fully. "Yes you are right." Arthfael replied. "Liliwen wouldn't come willingly. She is happy?" "Yes." "Then I will leave. I have said all I need to say. I will withdraw with my people and head back home." As Uhtred lowered his sword Arthfael went to embrace Tarian he whispered in her ear "You will have to face your past eventually. I can only keep them away for so long. They will never stop as long as you are still breathing." He kissed her the way a father would a child and retreated to thicker part of the forest. Even though the sun was rising Arthfael disappeared almost instantly in the shadows. Uthred raised an eyebrow at Tarian she would have a lot of explaining to do. "Why were you out here lord?" she asked as they headed back to the forest. "You ask me that question?" Uthred asked almost teasing. "I could ask you the same. I could not sleep and saw you heading to the forest. I was curious." he added. "You do not trust me do you?" "I trust you more now. What did the man say to you?" Tarian told Uhtred that likewise she could not sleep either and of what Arthfael had said to her. She delberately left out the part of her father not wanting to cast further doubt over her loyalty. "I would be lying to us both if I said I didn't expect this. Our kingdoms have always been at each other 's throats. More so than Danes or Saxons they do not hesitate to kill their own blood. My grandfather was the one who inherited the great kingdom of Gwynedd and Powys thus ruling over the majority of Wales. There are lesser kingdoms who naturally were not happy with this." "Well on the upside Tarian should you perish in the battle to come it will no longer be your problem." Uhtred laughed as they mounted their horses. Tarian glared at him. "I will as you one more thing" Uhtred added. "Yes?" "It is about Finan." Tarian blushed and looked away. Had Finan told the men about their passionate embrace outside her door? Probably he is a man is that not what men do? Boast of their conquests? Why did she believe him to be any different? Was Uhtred going to reprimand her? She had been silent for too long. "What about him Lord? "I saw you both in the hall yesterday evening. Normally I wouldn't intervene in these types of things with my men-warriors-" he corrected himself. "But he is one of my dearest friends and a good man. I ask you for his sake should you become his woman and he your man that you do not keep him in the dark about this he will need to know if he is to remain at your side." Tarian paused for a moment looking at the lord trying to remember what had happened to suggest anything. The grabbing of his hand when he wiped my face.. And what of Finan? Do I truly desire him that much? To put his life in further danger? Tarian cursed herself for being too forward. He did not mention the kiss did that mean Finan didn't tell him? "Should it go any further I will tell him what he needs to know." Tarian replied after much thought. "Does this mean you approve?" "I do not disapprove." Uhtred shrugged. "Speaking of good men my Lord Finan brought me up to speed in regards to everything with this curse. I offer you my condolences for your brother lord that and the head of this Norse witch." Uhtred smiled sadly and looked  towards the gate they were now approaching. "My thanks for your offer Tarian but I must be the one to end her life if I am to end this curse."

Chapter 6(part 2)-The devil at bay
Tumblr media
a/n originally this chapter was too long so I've to divide it into two parts as I wanted to give our lovers the scene they deserved. So warnings! mature content s03 e05 spoilers etc.. enjoy and please let me now what you thin! Again this chapter is entirely in Tarian's POV. P.S I don't think I've ever really written..a..mature adult intimate moment (best P.C to explain it?) So er.. Bare with me. Like this story its a skill and WIP For those not reading to read such a scene it will be sectioned off ;)
Your pulse it races with mine and I swear that there's no other girl Your body shakes, it's like tonight we can take the world Your pulse it races with mine and I swear we can take the world Is this the life, the one you imagined Is this the life, the one from your dreams Is this the life, the one you imagined Is this the life, the one from your dreams
She wants Revenge-Take the world
Tarian and Finan both exhausted, summoned their strength together to carry Osferth to the tents they had set up for the wounded. Tarian was at the top cleaning his face and humming a peaceful tune, Finan checked the wound and staunched it as best he could whilst Sihtric fetched Uhtred. Was this part of the curse or just life as Finan would say? She looked at the tearful Irishman even now he could still banter with his ailing friend. Uhtred returned concern evident on his face and gave the boy what he so desperately wanted-recognition for bravery. Uhtred left the tent with Sihtric,  placing a kiss on his forehead Tarian did the same leaving to find some herbs for the pain only after Finan was joined by the short bald priest they had met at Aylesburgh. The stocky dark haired Dane-Dagfinn-was now prisoner and spat at her feet as she walked by calling her a traitor in his native tongue. She stopped and turned round unsheathing her dagger she held it to his throat, Uhtred called out to her from behind."Tarian! The prisoners are not to be killed." Turning away from her lord she glared at the Dane settling for clubbing him with the hilt of her dagger. Osferth will be proud she thought as she continued to make her way to the trees searching for anything that could help him. "Will it work lord?" "I believe so. But the others must believe it too." "Lie to our own men?" "If this is to succeed we must." Tarian hid behind the next tree and watched Sihtric walk  away as she rounded the other side she walked straight into Uhtred. "You are good Celt but I am better." he said simply. "You will not tell anyone what you have heard here. Not even Finan is that understood?" "Lord I-" "You swore an oath to me Tarian, besides his ignorance may very well save his life-all of our lives. Go now. We will march to take the fortress itself shortly." Herbs in hand she followed his command.
As the sun began to set they had found the fortress itself almost completely empty. Word of Haesten's defeat and how he fled made its way back and Alfred and his army had no problem taking the fortress itself. The slaves there were given the option to aid them or to leave. Those who chose to stay were watched (unnecessarily) and prepared food for the new owners of Beamfleot. Her belly full,  Tarian bid goodnight to the men she had fought alongside and went to check in on Osferth. He was still awake listening to an amusing tale of Finan's with Sihtric and the priest. Wishing them good night,  she went to the small room that been given to her courtesy of Edward,  "you remind me so much of Aethelflead, " he told her. Well the young prince's favour certainly had it's benefits as in the middle of the small but comfortable room was a fireplace and two bowls of hot clean water and lavender. Stripping off her clothes she began to wash her self,  noting that stinging pain on her left side was nothing more than a scratch which she had forgotten all about. Once her body and hair was satisfactory she dressed in the clothes that had been laid out for her and went back down to where Osferth was stopping on the way for ale.
"Dear god in heaven I know it's been a while. But I promise ya-no I beg of ya-not for my life but for that of one of your own preachers. Protect him make him better an' I will do whatever you command of me..." "May I join you?" she called out to him, once his prayers had finished. The second largest hall in the fortress had been designated for the wounded,  there was little privacy and even less space. Finan kissed the cross around he wore around his neck and looked up at her. Sihtric-who was slumped on a stool the other side of Osferth's bed-was fast asleep. "I brought you both some ale but I don't think it will do him any good" she gestured to the sleeping Dane who had begun to snore. "You're too good." he muttered into his ale cup. "You should really get some sleep." she told him. "He is in the best place he could possibly be right now." "Yeh..yeh I know your righ' Uhtred's gone and got summoned by the king I should-" Finan started to move. "And he will come to you should he need you, " she finished for him grabbing his arm. Finan swayed on his feet poor man was exhausted. "Come walk with me some air will do you good." Tarian offered her hand and the Irishman took it linking their arms together, she led him out of the make-do recovery ward. No one paid them much notice as they walked around the compound together they rounded  the stables and found a quiet place in the shadows, Tarian shivered as her hair was still wet from earlier.
Finan pulled her into her into his arms wrapping what he could of his cloak around her she gazed up at him and he down at her. They were they were alive and they were alone. He kissed her softly and she kissed him back. Despite the cold she could stay there in his strong arms for eternity. There they stood foreheads pressed together he sighed. Tarian recalled her earlier desires, they were alive now but would they be the next day? It was now or never. "I like to try to live a life without regrets." "As do I" he chuckled. "But this morning, going into battle I had but one." "What was that Tarian?" he pulled away slightly so he could look in her the eye. Was it her imagination or were those hypnotic eyes twinkling with the same desire she felt? "That I did not lie with you." Finan was a silent for a moment then swallowed hard. "A-and now?" "That desire has not changed." Licking his lips he said "I feel that desire also." Tarian looked down and was surprised at her need to summon her courage. It would not be the first time she had lain with a man why was she so nervous now? "You will wash first though" "Ah righ' well I'll have to-" "There is a wash bowl in my quarters." "You wish to wash me my lady?" Finan teased. "You will wash before you touch me that is for certain." she gave him a bemused look and led him to her room. Unlocking the door she instructed Finan to make himself comfortable while she went to fetch more hot water and lemongrass as he seemed to be partial to it. When she came back she had found him in his breeches having fed the fire. "I half expected to find you asleep." she teased. "Tarian no man would sleep after what you had said to me." he grinned. Sitting on the chair she provided for him she gave him a bowl for the lower half of his body and she would work on the top part. She started from behind rinsing the dried blood and grime from his neck and his back feeling him tense up as she ran the cloth over the wounds from his time on the slave ship. "Do they still hurt?" she whispered. "Only in my mind." he croaked. Tarian kissed the scars on his back and returned to his front. His feet were now in the second bowl and Tarian had to be careful not to trip as she moved to clean his face his and throat. She could feel his gaze as her hands ran through the hair on his broad chest, across his shoulders and down his arms and over his toned scared stomach. In one swift motion Finan took his feet out of the bowl and pushed it aside drawing her to him where he buried his face against her. There she held him as what felt like tears soak through her tunic. He made no sound as he cried silently against her and she said no words as none were needed. They had lost loved ones and faught many battles but they were alive. And they were together. After he had composed himself he pulled himself away to look up at her. "Are you sure you want this? Because I don't want-" Tarian kissed him mid-sentence. "My dear Finan I have wanted this since that day outside the gates of Saltwich." Finan smiled as they both remember that day where he had thought he had bested her but she had turned the proverbial tables on him.
a/n mature content The half naked Irishman now much cleaner stood up to face her with a dangerous look in his eyes. Even if she were married even if she wanted another Tarian did not think she could resist him for he was the most handsome man she had laid eyes on and he was practically naked with a look that charm even the most pious of women. He pulled her hard against him kissing her with such passion she thought she the heavens themselves had opened up to take hold of her very body and soul. There tongues intertwined and Finan wasted no time untying first her cloak then briefly breaking the kiss to help her remove her tunic and undergarments. She watched him as he took a step back to marvel at her nakedness. Licking his lips as he too removed what was left of his clothing and pulled her towards the small bed. As Finan lay above her, he took a moment to look into her eyes almost as if he was searching for a change of mind-he found none. His kisses were slower this time starting at her forehead then her nose , her cheek , her jaw until they found her lips. He wanted to take his time for which Tarian was grateful for as she too wanted this night to last forever. Her hands roamed his body as he kisses went lower and like herself he was fond of biting. She traced her nails down his broad back over his muscular arms intertwining her legs with his. Tarian could feel him hard between her legs with one skilled hand he entered her with his fingers as her nails dug deeper into his back . "Do you like that?" he breathed in her ear. The sound she made in response was not audible but it must have been the answer he desired as he began to build up the pace. She could wait no longer-the tension too much -she was going to explode if he didn't give her what she needed right there right then. "Finan!" she ordered. "As my love commands" he chuckled in her ear. Pulling up slightly he guided himself inside her watching her reaction entering slowly to give her time to adjust to his sizeable width. With each slow , deep thrust Tarian rose up to meet him wrapping a leg around him she pulled him closer. "Faster." Finan was a man for following orders and faster he went. Tarian was like a woman possessed as she matched his ferocity biting down hard on his shoulder as she found her release Finan followed soon after nearly collapsing on top of her. That night they both slept soundly in each other's arms , their demons at bay they found their own little paradise amidst the the death and bloodshed around them.

When writing I find music helps set the tone for a particular scene or character. So here is this chapter’s inspiration:
Felt it in my fist, in my feet, in the hollows of my eyelids Shaking through my spine and down through my ribs No more dreaming of the dead as if death itself was undone No more calling like a crow for a boy, for a body in the garden ......No more dreaming like a girl so in love with the wrong world Blinding-Florence and the Machine Destiny is all arselings!
Finan POV "Easy Lil," Finan stood behind her straightening out her arm. Crouching down he added, "Now see your target and slow slowly slow-ugh!" Liliwen had pulled back the arrow with such force she winded him. She released the arrow not even looking at it,instead she glanced up at him. Sihtric and Osferth who had been watching the lesson laughed at him. "I'm fine child," he ruffled her hair. Liliwen stuck her tongue out at the other two men and moved to get her arrow which had not been too far off the target. A foreign tongue called out to them Finan couldn't help but smile as he watched the child run to her mother? Protector? Friend? Sister? There was still so many questions left unanswered. In the early days of her recovery Finan took it upon himself to visit her,   more than once a day if he could. Under the pretence of watching Liliwen he would potter about the room and listen to their strange language. Sometimes he would go in alone tell her about his day and what mischief Liliwen had gotten into. Despite there time together there was so much  they needed to know so much he wanted to know. "Fin..he..ok." Liliwen struggled with the English words she told them proudly. The three men turned to look at the little girl. "She has been quite the student in both her studies and her use of weaponry." Sihtric explained to Tarian. "Yes lady we fear Finan's very life might be in danger." Osferth added. "More lie his heart," Sihtric whispered to Osferth as they watched the exchange between their friend and new found ally. "Should you really be up and about Tarian?" Finan asked flinching as an after thought this was the first time he had called her by her name and was not invited to do so despite his visits. Tarian stared at him momentarily."Finan.." she began "I have been bed bound for more than a week I grow restless." "Understandable anything I can do?" Again Finan chided himself he could only imagine what Sihtric and Osferth were saying as he could feel them watching. As was the young Liliwen standing between them head back and forth grinning broadly. "I wish to find the Lord Uthred there is much we need to discuss." she replied. "Indeed there is lady." a voice replied from behind Tarian. Appearing out of nowhere as only Uthred could do, he stood leaning against the pilar with the Aethflead accompanied by the lady that helped Tarian not a week ago. "I suggest we move this sensitive discussion to my parlour?" Aethelflead suggested indicating to her lady to take Liliwen away. This simple gesture spoke volumes as the child walked away willingly-no protest or refusal . For it had seemed the child had grown accustomed to these strangers favouring one in particular offering nothing more than a few welsh words and a "'bye Fin" before she left the courtyard.
***************************** Tarian's POV
The lady of Mercia's parlour was a beautiful room. Fine dark wood furniture, colours on the walls Tarian had never seen before and soft furnishings there was also a fire to welcome them and ale waiting. Standing with her back against the fire, hands placed uncertainly by her side, she looked to Aetheflead seated at her table and the Lord Uthred standing behind her. "Where shall I begin Lord Lady?" "Perhaps the start?" Aethflead replied "Who are you and how did you come to be here?" Tarian sighed and shut her eyes briefly gratefully taking the cup of ale Osferth offered. After muttering a word of thanks she began "Some years ago there was a battle on the edge of our lands between Dane and Celt. We defeated them but at great cost. A great Chief was killed and his daughter claimed by the victor. That woman was my mother. She was brought to the Danish stronghold I believe it to be halfway between our kingdom of Powys and Mercia. Some time later I was born." "So you are both Dane and Celt?" Uthred asked, Tarian nodded, "Who is your father? He must be of great importance for those men to go to such lengths." For not even the mightiest of Danes went near the Welsh border these days. Like the Scots it was re-known for being a mission of heavy losses with minimal reward. Whoever sent men that far West had money power and influence.
"Jarl Jurgen" "Thee Jarl Jurgen?" Aethflead asked. Tarian looked up in surprise "You no of him lady?" "Just who exactly is this Jarl Jurgen?" Finan asked. Before Tarian could explain Aethelflead interjected surprising just about everyone in the room with her vast knowledge of Dane politics. "Only one of the strongest powers of the Norse and Danish invasion. He commanded the biggest invasion of Northern Frankia and has since moved on to Ireland. Although there were rumours he was on our shores no one dared believe it."
"If the Danes and northmen were to ever unite under one king it would be this Jarl Jurgen. He is the most respected and trusted of the Dane leaders." Uthred added. “So basically he's like your brother with just a much bigger army?" Finan asked. Uthred nodded. "No offence lady but I hope to god he never does set back  down on these shores."
"If my father had an interest in this Island again we would now it by now." "Yet you were taken." As to Finan's response Tarian had no explanation. If he was back why did he not come back for her himself if she was that important to him worth that much to take in the first place. "I do not know his reasons." Tarian replied. "Nor do I remember much of him just that I hardly saw him as he was constantly away on raids. One night the estate was attacked my mother and I escaped with those who had raided the stronghold. It cost my mother her life. Up until recently I had believed we had been rescued and reunited with my mother's people. However now...Now I am not so sure." "No??" Uthred asked. “You now as well as I do Lord that Danes do not typically use poison." Which meant it was one of her own that wanted to kill her there was no doubt in anyone’s mind. "Jaesus does no one make squares anymore?" Finan joked. "First curses now poison arrows mother of divine sufferin'. What happen' ta killin' a man-or in your case a woman- in a fair figh' " offering much needed reprieve from their dark thoughts.
Once the laughter had died down, Tarian asked. "So now you now my story lord what now?" "We still do not know how you came to escape." Aethelflead asked giving Tarian the feeling she did not trust her. "I had a friend who was amongst them. That friend was killed helping us." Aethelflead apologised and gave her condolences. "Do you hold true to your oath?" Uthred asked. ”I will if Liliwen is kept safe." Tarian replied but she already knew the answer although they may not trust her they were good people they were not the type to serve up a lamb to the slaughter. "Why can't we just sent her back to her own people? Won't she be safe there?" Osferth asked. "'Cause, baby monk it wud be challenge in itself to get Lil back not mention she probably wudnt stay. Also not ta mention if Tarian was poisoned by her own people imagine what they would do to the child." Finan explained. "Am I righ'?" Tarian nodded then tilted her head to the side and examined the Irishman. Lil he called her..Finan has grown fond of her and she him. I knew i made the right decision. He is no fool either. "Is she your child?" Aethelflead asked. "No. She is not. I knew her mother. We were friends. About two years ago Liliwen witnessed her parents deaths when they tried to take her she took her first life and I the others. She had not spoken a word since last week." "A six year old killed a fully grown man?" "By sheer chance. When he grabbed her she had already taken his dagger the Dane tripped and fell he fell on to the weapon in her hand causing his death and nearly crushing her in the process. Whether it was the trauma of a parents deaths or taking a life at such a young age that rendered her mute I do not know." "Look  the important ting now is she alive she talking shes smilin' she's even gettin' along with us." Finan reached out in an attempt to comfort her. "Yes she is already getting along with my little Aelfwynn. I worried at first but she is very gentle." Aethflead smiled.
Blinking back tears that threatened to come down she brought herself back to the matter at hand. "So Lord Uthred? Lady Aethflead?" "I could use another warrior. Lady?" “The child will remain here. Her English is improving my ladies tell me." "She will earn her keep I promise you lady and as for your daughter she will guard her with her life." "Aye tha' she will Lady the child's already showin' promise as a warrior. Mus' be the Celt in 'er." Finan teased winking at Tarian.  Tarian laughed and for the first time in what felt like years like a great load had been taken from her shoulders and replaced with a strange warm feeling in her belly. A warm feeling she noticed that only seemed to increased whenever the handsome Irishman looked her way.
As Tarian was now sworn in as part of Uthred's company Finan was tasked over the coming weeks with testing her battle skill and together they would train both Liliwen and Osferth. "So you don't use a shield lady like at all?" Finan asked as they gathered outside the walls of the estate the footsteps crunching on early snowfall. "No. Our tribe typically don't. We stick to our borders and when the enemy comes too close we attack from the trees. Or draw them into the forest and spring our traps. Shields would only slow you down." "That makes sense." Osferth replied. All three of them looked at him. "Well it does even I understand that much." he muttered. "We...t-te"Liliwen began picking up staff and shield. She was beginning to understand more words by the day. The workings of a child's mind never ceased to amaze Tarian. Only in her deepest desires late at night would she admit to herself a longing for a child of her own. A man she could live without but she longed to be a mother. Maybe that was why she took it upon herself to take care of Liliwen even if that meant she was now living away from home and her mother's family because of this. "Sound it out" Finan encouraged. "Tee teach! Teach you m-monk!" The three of them laughed. Liliwen was a charmer there was no doubt in that. "Ay lady baby monk is righ'. Trouble is not all our fightn' is done in the trees. You wanna fight with us then you will have to fight sword and shield." "Ah yes the infamous shield wall." Tarian replied taking the shield Finan handed her. Osferth pulled himself and Liliwen to a safe distance as they watched. "Now which is your sword arm?" "Both" she replied simply. "No I mean which arm is strongest." "Both." Tarian repeated. "A warrior is taught from Liliwen's age to have equal strength in both arms. If one is subdued the other is equal in its defence. Finan nodded. "Righ' you defend yourself and I'll attack." Tarian nodded but did not move Finan shrugged and went in for the attack. Tarian side stepped hitting Finan not hard enough to knock him to the ground but enough to throw him off balance. Quicly he regained his composure. Tarian held her shield up as she had seen the Saxon and Danish men do so many times and waited. They circled each other then out of nowhere it seemed Finan had manoevered himself in and around her defence knocking her to the ground. She had heard of his nickname "Finan the agile" and now she had seen for herself. There he sat on top of her his weight resting on his knees as he had her arms pinned above her head. It was not lost on Tarian that this was not the first time he sat atop of her. Forest green met deep brown eyes. She had never seen eyes quite so dark. They stared at each other Tarian could feel his grip loosening his face closed in on hers now a breath away. Tarian blinked where was his sword? Big mistake. She bit his hand and they tumbled as he cried out in pain. Gaining the upper hand she sat on top her hips on his legs either side her dagger that she had unsheathed from behind at his throat. "Do you yield Irishman?" "Aye lady you have won this round," he laughed that beautiful sound like as sweet as a song  Tarian was growing too fond off. Too fond for own liking, for her dear Gustaf was not long dead. It was if the memory of her fallen lover brought her back to the present she hopped up and off the Irishman. "You will forgive me Finan but I believe I am done for the day I do not wish to over exert myself."
************************
Finan POV *s03 e05 spoiler alert* Finan's jovial face now sobered "Yeah of course I-" Tarian walked away before he could finish his sentence. Liliwen and Finan exchanged looks before she followed her. What had just occurred between them? In that split second he recalled himself on top of her she wasn't resisting this time. How much he longed to kiss those full lips-audience or not. It was as if strayed into a dream and what a dream it had been. As with all good dreams reality came crashing down on him. She probably sense his longing and did not feel the same. What with having sworn herself to Uthred maybe she felt she could not refuse him? Finan made to go in after them to explain she owed him nothing, to tell her he expected nothing when Osferth called out to him. As he spun round In the distance he could make a figure on a horse striding towards them. Squinting into the distance he had a bad feeling about this. "Fetch Uthred tell him a woman is here to see him." "How can you tell its a woman?" "You have to ask?" The sight of Brida coming towards them seemingly on her own could only spell trouble. A million thoughts rushed to his head at once he would have to push his thoughts and dare he say longing? of Tarian for the moment. Duty came calling.
******************
Tarian’s POV   Tarian ignored the men hurrying to the horses. A single rider approached whatever it was she was sure Uthred's men were more than able. She needed to be alone. Was that selfish? Yes. Was she already breaking an oath she had just sworn? Possibly. What did she know of oaths? She had never sworn her life to one person before. Tarian's feet had minds of their own and they brought her to a Christian holy house at the far right of the estate. She could count on one hand the amount of times she had been inside one as a result of brave (and quite foolish) missionaries but only now did she truly appreciate how peaceful it was. Tarian sat at the far left corner not wanting to disturb the holy women, Liliwen beside her grasped her hand and said nothing. "I did not know you were Christian Tarian," a voice broke her through the mist that shrouded her minds After Lady Aethflead with her daughter Aelfwynn in tow blessed herself and the child mimicked her. Again Tarian felt that longing in her chest. Aethelflead look at her. "May we join you two?" Tarian nodded and moved down the bench for her. "I am not Christian but I find a strange sort of peace here. Many summers ago holy men came to our lands wishing to preach the word of your God. They were no threat our leaders knew this and permitted them to settle outside our borders but declined the invitation to convert. Several of us were fascinated especially those who had never seen peaceful foreigners up close before. It's how I learnt your language." "Ah I had wondered how you were able to speak our language as well. Well as I'm sure those priests told you and your people God's house is always open." Tarian did not mention what happened to the priests a year after they had settled it was probably best not to mention such things in their holy house. "As is mine. Something troubles you Tarian?" Aethelflead added. Tarian bit her lip. Where to begin? How could she tell the beautiful lady that she now found her heart torn in two. Guilt for having gotten Gustaf killed for knowing in her hearts of hearts that she may have given her body to him but never her heart and that he was killed for nothing? Or how despite only knowing the Irishman a short time Tarian felt something strange in her stomach it made her both sick and euphoric and in that short space of time they had known each other, even less time they had spent together Tarian found herself developing feelings for him. Feelings she could not recall having for Gustaf despite knowing him since she was an infant. Despite him risking everything when he would send secret messages to her warning her of Danes or confessing sweet nothings her heart was never truly his. "I feel I am conflicted." Tarian replied. It was as close to the truth as she could muster. "When we first met you in the forest you told us you had help escaping. Do you feel conflicted as that friend is now dead?" Tarian nodded eyes beginning to water she had never cried so much in her life. " "He was my lover." she added. "But I believe although his heart was mine my heart was not wholly for him. I find myself wracked with guilt as he died for nothing." She told Aetheflead of Gustaf's last words and allowed the tears to fall this time Aethelflead put a comforting arm around her shoulders. "From what you have told me he made his choice to keep you safe- keep you both safe. His choice was his own and he died a free man. If it is any consolation Tarian I know of what you speak. " Aethelflead replied and told the woman of which she had begun to think of fondly the story of her kidnapping . Of her love for Eric and how she knew in her heart of hearts that her daughter Aelfwynn was indeed Eric's and added how she had his smile something she had only dare tell Uthred. "And you murdered his killer his brother for revenge?" Liliwen said in their native tongue. Momentarily surprising Tarian yet again for the swift  comphrension the girl had of a language she did not yet fully speak . Aetheflead looked to Tarian who translated gently chiding the girl for not saying it in English. "Well at the time he was about to kill Uthred so I suppose you could  say i killed two birds with one stone" she laughed. The two women embraced one another and left the church arm in arm Aethelflead whispering of her pretty boy husband Aethelred the turd careful not to mention his actual name but the monicker they came up for him-pudding. Tarian translating certain parts for the Liliwen the four came to a halt when they saw the four men returning their horses to the stables. The female rider that had been announced was not with them and no one showed any obvious signs of injury yet why were they looking so grave?
******************************
Finan's& Tarian's POVs Aethelflead lead the children away and motioned Uthred to follow her yet there Tarian stood waiting for them concern showing on her beautiful face. No trace of whatever had made her uncomfortable earlier. There was no denying it now I'm mad for her.  Finan shook himself silly after the news Brida just brought and the decision Uthred had made there was no time for such thoughts. "What has happened?" she asked meeting him halfway. "Uthred." He began "Uthred's brother is dead." Tarian thought for a moment she had heard of Uthred Danish family what was his name. "Ragnar was his name" Finan answered her unspoken words. "A good man you know for a Dane. Uthred believes it to be the curse. I fear we have a near impossible mission on our hands Tari. You have sworn yourself to a man who believes himself cursed." Tarian looked up at the use of her nickname only Liliwen called her that then again Finan had a habit of giving those close to him nicnames Baby Monk for example which she would be lying if she said she did not find it utterly adorable.
"Listen Tarian..about earlier when we were sparring I just wanted ta say that if I made you feel that you owed or as a woman are expect-"
She took his hand in hers bringing his words and his heart to a standstill. Looking him in the eye she said "Firstly Irishman I have sworn myself curse or no curse so you had best bring me up to speed" she smiled. "And secondly Finan do you not know well enough by now? I do as I please. Whether it be as a  warrior or as a woman."
**************************
"He looks like he's been kicked by a horse what do you reckon she said to him?" Osferth asked Sihtric as he watched them walk hand in hand towards the hall.
"What do you think she said to him Osferth?" the young Dane laughed at Osferth’s reddening cheeks.
"What do you s'pose Uthred will say about this?"
"I do not believe I would care if two warriors were to hump each other as long as it was not against their will" said none other than Uthred behind them.
"Oh shi-sorry Lord you scared me." Osferth stammered.
"Come now baby monk there is much to prepare and you should not be spying. It is ungodly." Uthred teased as the three men made their way to the hall. Both men knew their Lord was putting on a brave face so they laughed all the same for who knew what dangers tomorrow would bring.

If anyone would like to be tagged let me know :)
Destiny is all arselings!
************
Finan POV Several days had passed with no sign of the wild woman from the woods. Aetheflead protested of course. Why should she allow a woman to be hunted by their enemies on Mercian soil. Eventually Uthred relented and they searched their side of the forest-to no avail and within the space of those days the child had tried to escape on several occasions so they took it in turns to watch Liliwen as she easily outsmarted the guards. Finan and the rest of the company now realised why the woman had rendered the child unconscious.
On the fourth evening after a particular difficult day Finan sat in the hall by the fire. It didn't sit right with him at all. Should they have stayed with her? Should they have taken her as prisoner? She had threatened to kill him after all. And yet those piercing green eyes would not leave his mind. Why were the Danes after her? And more importantly how many Danes were after her. "May I join you? Finan?" a voice added after a moment of silence. "Mmm?" Sihtric sat beside him offering a cup of much needed ale. "Cheers," Finan replied taking a big gulp. "I heard you had an eventful day." Sihtric began. It been Finan's turn to guard the estate and watch the child. The eventful day Sihtric spoke of was in fact Finan having to somehow bribe the Liliwen to get down from the rooftops of the estate. "How exactly did you manage to get her down?" "Well bud I could'n' exactly come up after her. 'N I now noth'n abou' children but I remember when we found her that woman was an archer righ'? So I negotiated." "With a child." "'N a mute child at that. Basically if she came down I'd show her how to use the bow. At firs' I thought she 'd tink  I was gunna aim for 'er but luckily she got the idea. Maybe she knows some English after all?" "Well at least that is progress" "What abou’ you how's Uthred hold'n up?" "As well as can be expected but I feel it has been altogether to eventful these pass days. Fate has-" "Ah jaesus son you're not gonna start shite'n on about bleedin' curses again are ya? I do not know how much of it I can listen ta." "Forgive me Fin-" "Ah look  I'm just bolloxed is all I do not mean ta snap. Jus' today was just-" "Strange. Aetheflead is debating on whether or not to write to Father Pyrlig he was Celt before converting perhaps he could offer some guidance." "Not the wors idea I s'pose." Finan sighed staring into the flames that reminded him of her hair. He barely spoke a few words to her yet he saw some piece of her everywhere he looked. "You worry for her, for the woman don't you?" "Does that make me cursed too? As long as she ain't another Skade." Finan laughed and downed the rest of his ale. "I don't even know the woman and she threatened my life. Not the firs' time a woman has threatened it mind you. But it was the firs' time one came close. I get it though she was only protecting her child. She was a looker though weren't she?" "Was?" "Come on now Sihtric bud you really think she's coming back from that? It don' feel righ' leavin’ a woman ou' there yano?" "Finan she is a warrior and we have done as much as we can. With the Danes marching to Wessex and Skade's curse we cannot afford to-" "I now I know. It's jus' the child the poor thing doesn't speak and ev'n' if she could, could she even understand us? She's alone." Finan sighed and got up from his seat. "Don' mind me I've jus' 'ad to much ta drink is all. Time for a piss then sleep I tink. I've an archery lesson tomora after all. G'night bud." Running his hands through his hair Finan left the hall. Before he had the chance to relieve himself the arrival he waited for was announced.  "Fetch Lord Uthred!" "Fetch the Lady Aethelflead!" Gates were open to reveal a black horse trotting in its rider hunched over. A guard ran towards the horse before it's rider fell. And sure enough it was her.
"She burns. Her wounds do not appear to be severe enough to cause this, the healer suspects poison and if we do not get her fever down she won't make it through the night." Aetheflead explained as she shut the patient's door behind her. "When Uthred was dyin' Brida came." "Brida?" "Nevermind look- she was able ta save him with some herbs she had surely something must grow around here." "Even if something did Finan it is the middle of the night and do you recall what Brida used? As I do not." Uthred added. A child's footsteps ran towards them. Finan bent down and looked into those troubled grey-blue eyes.  "I don't now how you got out again lil' one but it's best you don't go in there it's not something you should see." "Perhaps we should let her in," Aethelflead suggested "Let her say goodbye." Uhtred opened the door and they gave Liliwen access. "TARIAN!" the girl cried out. The three of them exchanged looks. The child was mute no more. "Tarian! No! Tarian!" The child cried grasping the woman's hand. "Tarian." Finan muttered to himself. For that must be her name.
****************************
Tarian's POV Everywhere hurt- everywhere burned. Something cold and wet was pressed against her head when Tarian heard screaming from somewhere she struggled for her daggers. "You must rest woman you are badly injured." A voice said to her. "And I feel even poisoned." The voice of an elderly man added. Poison-that can only mean one thing. Her father's men were not the only ones after her for Danes do not typically use poison. Celts do. As tears streamed from her eyes the room began to spin throat burning Tarian mustered every bit of strength to lean over and vomit over the side of her bed. "Tarian!"
Though her vision swam before her there could be no mistaking that voice. "Here little one. You found your voice." she greeted the child in their native tongue. "I'm so sorry I left you and your head-" She reached out to her. Liliwen approached Tarian and stroked the side of her cheek and shaking her head. "Yes I lost my voice but it has come back to me again. You are poisoned aren't you? Are they dead? The man that helped us get away?" As usual nothing escaped the child and a million questions to boot. "The old man believes it is poison." Tarian blinked back the second round tears that threatened to fall. Gustaf who was her friend when she lived on her father's estate had never forgotten her whom despite being sworn to her father set her and Liliwen free. Who had loved her after all these years of scarce glances and even fewer meetings. "Gustaf is dead. But the beast who did it is dead also." "And the poison?" "Only the Aurealis plant can help me. It grows here. I do not remember where." Liliwen got up from the bed and sighed. Wearing that look Tarian knew all too well. Determination. "Liliwen" The frail sound of her own voice frightened her. "Don't put yourself-" "You have always looked out for me. Now it is my turn."
****************************
Finan POV
The five of them watched the exchange between Liliwen and the woman dying in the bed. "I thought she said the child was mute." Aetheflead muttered. "Ay Tarian said that," Finan replied bewildered as he watched the child touch her face. Ignoring Uthred's questioning gaze he asked. "What will become of the child?" "A convent most likely. I haven't decided." she replied as they watched dying woman and child converse in a strange language. Under any other circumstances the idea of a feral child being sent to a convent would tickle him somewhat at the chaos she would cause. But not in this case. If she were a boy that raw anger and talent could be harnessed and she would make a fine warrior. Maybe they would make an exception if he got the chance to train her. Celtic women had just as much reputation the battle field as men did. Liliwen hopped of the bed and walked towards Finan cautiously, turning back to look at Tarian for what Finan could only guess was approval. Finan walked towards them both as Tarian's voice was now barely more than a whisper. "She wants you to follow her Irishman." Tarian croaked as Liliwen took his hand. "She seems to like you." The woman gave him a weak smile. With one last fleeting look, Liliwen led them both out the room and out in to the yard. An unwelcome combination of ale, exhaustion and cold hit Finan suddenly and he swayed on his feet Liliwen steadied him. "I'm ok child" he assured her. Finding a barrel of icy water he splashed himself ready with it. Liliwen tugged on his cloak hurriedly and pointed to the gate. "You want us to leave the estate?" It took Finan a minute to realise that although she may no longer be mute she probably didn't understand the language he spoke. After several exchanges of hand guestures later Finan and a few guards were saddling up their horses and riding towards the forest. As Liliwen directed them deeper into the forest Finan became more and more uneasy. He did not like being so deep in a possible hostile forest with such a small number. Although the sun had fully risen it would not be much use them if they continued much further off the beaten path. Finan wondered why he had gone with the child. Who or what was she leading them too? Over the past few days he believed out of all them he had begun to develop some sort of rapport with the child. Funny he would think as out of all of them (baring Osferth) he was the only with no children or experience with children or at least not that he knew of. And yet here he was a woman who should mean nothing to him entrusting the well being of this child who was now literally leading him to the unknown. What have I got m'self into. Liliwen held up her hand like a commander leading an army as Finan then the guards halted. She was already struggling to get down before Finan himself hopped down and with his assistance she hit the ground running. After 100 yards west she stopped at a tree that had been marked-its bark cut with markings that were faintly familiar to Finan. Crouching down she reached for Finan's dagger. Liliwen closely inspected each bright orange and yellow plant growing at the base of the marked tree and dug out several plants with the dagger. She rushed back to the horse returning the dagger Liliwen gave Finan an expectant look. Now that they new what direction they were going in the rushed back  to the estate before they could as the pagans would say tempt fate any further. Liliwen rushed over to where the Finan had previously washed his face and took a cup of ale from a group of guards talking at the table. One of the guards grabbed her as she emptied the contents out. "Oy! Celt what do you think  you're doing?!" he bared at her. "You will let her go Oswald." Finan ordered from behind him. "My apologies Finan. This child here is trouble." the guard sighed and let her go. "No denying that." Finan too his hand off his sword. The danger passed. Liliwen filled the cup with water nodded at Finan to follow her and the two hurried towards the kitchen. Heating the water she quickly prepared the plants Finan hands were slapped away after he offered assistance. Once the hot liquid was prepared they hurried off to the Tarian lay in. "Mother of Jesus the devil has taken her." Finan gasped as they opened the door to Tarian's bedchamber they found her convulsing on the bed. "No Finan just the poison." The healer replied. He and Osferth held her body as still they could Aethflead's lady held Tarian's head up and a metal rod in her mouth-so she wouldn't swallow her tongue-she explained. Liliwen seemingly unfazed tugged at Finan made the motion to for Tarian to drink the liquid. Finan got on the bed beside her removing the rod quickly he tipped the liqid down her throat. Seconds later Tarian spat it out still seizing her her eyes rolled to the back of her head he had never scene anything like it. Danes didn't use poison-did they? He looked to Liliwen who signalled for him to try again-the whole cup. She got on the bed beside him rubbed Tarian's mangled red hair and sang a song in her native tongue as Finan tipped the liquid back into her mouth. Whether it was the liquid or the soothing melody of a child it worked. The seizing slowed then stopped altogether. The healer and lady pulled up the covers again to cover he modesty and when the healer said she would need to be watched Finan volunteered. He knew this brave child of the forest was going nowhere. And neither was he.
