How I Make Gifs

It’s been over a year and a half since I made my last version so I’d figure I’d make an updated one.

This is meant to be beginner level so if you’re looking for my coloring technique skip to the coloring section (step 7).

The Basics

Step 1: Obtain the video of what you’re giffing

I exclusive use screen-recording now because I just find it easier. Currently I use OBS Studio to screen-record. It’s super easy to use and it’ll screen record on most streaming services (How I setup my OBS here). I usually just record the scene/clip I’m going to gif as to avoid huge files.

I previously used to download torrents or screen record using Screencastify on Chrome.

Step 2: Load your video into Photoshop

To load your video into PS click File > Import > Video Frames to Layers then navigate to your video file and open it.

You’ll then get a pop-up like the one below and you can use the highlighted sliders to select which part of the video you want to load into frames for your gif and just load it in. (Note: I usually load in multiple gif’s frames and separate but for this example I’ll use the one)

Step 3: Delete Excess Frames

When importing the frames sometimes you grab a couple frames you don’t want so now it’s time to cut them out. To do this click the first frame you want to delete and Shift+Click to the last frame. Once the frames are highlighted click the trash can, circled below. (Note: if your photoshop loads the frames in timeline view instead of frame animation view click the icon to the far left in the image below to switch it.)

Repeat this for the end of the gif as well if needed.

Step 4: Re-size the Gif

The width and height of your gifs can pretty much be anything and Tumblr will shrink or stretch accordingly as long as your gif is under 8 MB. These are the widths tumblr shrinks the gifs to (which is what I use for my gif widths usually):

‣ For one gif per line a 540px width is used. ‣ For two gifs per line a 268px width is used.

To resize your file click Image > Image Size then put in the width you’re using. Make sure that your width and height are linked (icon circled below) so the image doesn’t end up looking wonky!

Now you can crop your image if you chose by selecting Image > Canvas Size. For the set I’m making in this tutorial I’m adjusting the height to 250px.

Step 5: Changing the speed of the gif (Optional, based on how the gif looks)

When my gifs load into Photoshop they tend to speed up for some reason. To change this you just need to adjust the delay.

Start by selecting all the frames (under the circled 3 lines) then click on the current delay and edit it. I usually make the delay 0.03 sec but it all depends on how it looks.

Step 6: Saving Gif(s)

To save your new gif select File > Export > Save for Web. Make sure to look at the gif size in the bottom left corner of the pop up. The number should be under 10MB or it may not work well on Tumblr.

Congrats! You now have a gif! You can stop here if you want (though I do still recommend jumping to Step 12 to sharpen the gif). Here’s what it looks like right now:

My Gif Coloring

So now you have a gif but you were hoping for it to be brighter or more vibrant. Well here’s the next steps! Please note that most of this is just creative choice so do what you think looks nice and mess around with it until you find your style.

Step 7: Make a folder for all your adjustments (optional step)

I make a folder to put all my coloring settings in so I can easily duplicate it to the other gifs. Make sure the folder is above all the layers of the gif. The folder button is at the bottom of your layers menu.

Step 8: Lighting

There are a lot of techniques to brighten up (or darken) your gifs, it all depends on your personal style and what you’re looking for. I like bright gifs so I use multiple kinds of brightening layers.

I like to light my gifs using both the brightness/contrast layer and the curves layer. These adjustments are under the icon to the left of the folder. For the brightness layer I just kinda slide it till the gif is bright, it can always be adjusted later. For curves I like to make two points one in the empty space in the top right and one over the graph shown, something like this:

Step 9: Vibrance/Saturation and Balancing It

Now I add a Vibrance/Saturation layer and add about 20-40 vibrance depending on the scenes coloring.

Vibrance tends to make the colors more yellow (Saturation tends to add more red) so I use a Color Balance layer to make the colors more normal. With Color Balance you just slide the slider away from whatever color your gif currently shows. To get rid of yellow you slide in more blues, for green you slide in magentas, for cyans you slide in more reds. Just mess around with it until you get something you like as this is all dependent on your coloring style.

Step 10: More Coloring!

Now it’s just some small adjustments left. I basically just mess around with different Selective Color settings until I get something I like. Usually I decrease the yellows, increase the cyan in the reds category, and add 2-5% in black section under the blacks category.

Step 11: Duplicate your Coloring Folder to all gifs in the set

So you don’t have to individually recolor every gif you can just duplicate the folder with the coloring layers by right clicking the folder then selecting “Duplicate Group” and select which document to duplicate the folder to.

Note: if your gif is a different angle or shot then it may take some slight adjustments to color it.

Step 12: Sharpen you Gifs

Step 13: Adding Text

To add text click on the “T” icon in the Photoshop tool bar then click anywhere on your image and type out your text.

For my text I usually use the Calbri font in bold and italic at size 15/16 for my 540px gifs and 12 for my 268px gifs. Text color is personally preference but I usually use white for one character and yellow for a second character.

Once you have your text typed out you’ll want to click all three of these before you move it or add any style to it to keep the style and position uniform:

Now that the text is unified I add a stroke and a drop shadow. To do this double click on the space between the “T” and the text in the sidebar pictured above. A popup will show up click on stroke and adjust the settings then repeat with drop shadow. These are my settings:

And just position the text where you want it. I usually center it and have it about 0.46cm from the bottom edge of the image.

Repeat this for all the gifs that have text.

Step 14: Saving Gif(s) and Posting

Select File > Export > Save for Web and look for the file size. Remember the gif needs to be UNDER 10MB.

More frames, brighter coloring, more colors, larger sizes usually lead to more MBs so sometimes in my bigger files I check the save page a few times to make sure I’m within the tumblr limits.

When posting to Tumblr I make sure to save the set as a draft first to make sure it looks okay on the platform (and on mobile). I also use it as a way to proofreading my text again.

When posting I use edit tags, show tags, and character tags (only for the characters in the set) and schedule the post (I don’t think this matters but it helps me keep my posting time consistent).

And that’s it! Once you get the hang of it it’s way more fun than it sounds!

Here’s an updated version of my old gif guide! I’ll be editing this every now and then for anything I missed / clarity / etc., but I think it’s pretty good to go for now.

This guide will cover modding, recording, and editing. More under the cut.

Everyone has their own way of doing this, but this is mine, in case it helps anyone! It might be a bit outdated since I tend to stick to what I know, but might still be helpful.

Requirements

This guide is written with the assumption that you can run GW2 fairly well in circumstances where you’d be recording. We will also be using Open Broadcaster (OBS) to record and Photoshop CC to edit, though you’re welcome to use whatever makes the most sense to you.

Modding

First and optionally, using something like GShade or NVIDIA Freestyle. These are real-time post-processing filters that modify how your game looks to you and your recording software. While not always the flashiest visual changes, they can make a difference when wanting vivid recordings.

They have their pros and cons: they can cause extra strain when recording, but some effects, such as depth of field blur and greenscreening, can be hard to replicate without them. If you have a lot of trouble getting good recordings, consider dropping this step.

Recording

In OBS, first you’ll want to set up for gif recording. Under the Video and Output settings, you’ll want to record videos of the highest quality you can. Loss of quality that may not be casually noticeable in a longer video become very apparent in short, looping gifs.

Record in windowed mode, and the fewer players around the better, generally. Anything to help your FPS.

Try recording a few things to get a sense for what you can record without stutter. You may be able to record idles without stutter, but may not be able to get fast movement like griffon dives without some tweaking. If you’re having a lot of stutter in your recordings, try one or more of the following:

Lower your recording quality.

Reduce the size of the GW2 window.

Record in an area with few players (like guild halls or other instances) and/or few assets to load (like the edges of maps).

Lower your graphics quality in GW2 (especially player model limit).

A little stutter can be worked through, but large frame drops are a problem. I suggest finding your sweet spot early so you can get to the fun parts: actually finding things to record.

Mess with animations! Find pretty areas! Grab your friends! Have fun!

Editing

Unfortunately this part will assume you’re using Photoshop, but other editors may have similar functions. I can only talk about what I know, and this is it!

Once you have your video, you’re ready to actually turn it into a gif. If you have a larger video, you’ll want to trim it down to the second or two that you want to comprise the gif. This can be done quickly on Windows by opening the video, clicking the pencil icon in the bottom right, and selecting “trim.”

Once you have your video clip, in Photoshop go to File > Import > Video Frames to Layers.

In this window you’ll likely want to leave most of it alone, unless you want to further trim the video. You may also want to check “Limit to Every # Frames” if you’re having a lot of stutter, the gif seems too slow, you have too many frames to begin with, etc. Play with it.

Notice that my video only records my GW2 window and that that window is really tiny in the recording. I was recording something with a lot of in-game movement, which my computer has trouble doing without a ton of stutter. An itty bitty window solves that for me without having to sacrifice in-game graphics quality. I don’t change the output size from my monitor resolution since I don’t want anything scaling funny. Personal preference.

Once it’s done importing, open the timeline window and you’ll see every frame of your video is now a frame in Photoshop, as well as it’s own layer. Play the animation in the timeline window to make sure it’s not too choppy and that you’ve got the frames you want. Once you’re sure of that, you can get to editing.

The first things I usually do are crop and resize. When resizing, you may want to change the resampling method, if you prefer crisp gifs. I usually prefer bicubic sharper.

Note that I’m downsizing to 540px in width. This is the width of a tumblr post on a desktop dashboard: if you don’t want tumblr making your gif fuzzy, this is the width you want. Two gifs side by side need to be 268px wide, three side by side need to be 177px (for the sides) or 178px (for the middle).

You may also want to go through your frames one-by-one and make sure none of them have doubled (or tripled) up; smallish hangs like this can usually be smoothed over simply by deleting the duplicate frames.

Once that’s settled, you can play with things like color and luminosity. You can toss adjustment layers (Layer > New Adjustment Layer) on top of all the other layers to easily effect every frame in the animation with one adjustment. I like using curves to lightly deepen shadows and brighten highlights.

You’ll also want to change the frame delay, which is done in the timeline window. I generally pick something between 0.05 and 0.07 for my gifs, but this is personal preference.

Once you’re happy with how it’s looking, you can move to saving it as a gif. Open the Save for Web window (this is getting deprecated I think, but it’s still handy for me, so use ctrl+shift+alt+s to get there).

Here you’ll be able to adjust Photoshop’s output, as well as what your gif is actually going to look like. Here’s my settings, I tend to try my best to be able to use the full 256 colors, and use pattern dithering. Color reduction algorithm (here it is listed as Selective) I tend to change more often between gifs. You need to keep your gif under 5M (lower left corner) for posting to Tumblr: you can adjust your settings here to try and get it under that if you’re marginally over.

If you’re a large amount over, you can try trimming frames or decreasing color count. Anything to get file size down!

50 Things I Learned Before Med School and then Compared to the Real Thing.

A little more than 4 years ago I wrote a 50 things-thing before I started medical school based solely off the things I was told by other people which was a lot of fun considering I wasn’t actually doing it yet. Now having basically completed my own whirlwind adventure I can go back and see if what I wrote on nothing but hearsay actually ended up being the truth.

I’ve literally waited so long to do this. Hope you enjoy.

First year

This is hardest you will have ever done. So far. – At this point in my life, yes, the first year of medical school tore me apart. But it put me back together, in way.

Even though it seems like you have no time, you really do. Now is the time to go to social events and make friends. – Part of the whole process is finding companionship in commiseration.

Take pictures with everyone at your white coat ceremony. – So I ended up not being able to do this the way I wanted to back then, but you can bet your asses I’ve got this down for graduation.

Anatomy has three types of people on the first day; the people who are way too fascinated, the ones who cry because they are cutting open a person, and the people who throw up into the slop bucket. – No one threw up or passed out but it was A Thing no doubt about it.

Always flip the body slowly and with precision. Unless you want a formaldehyde and fat shower. – It was me. I got the shower. I had to throw away my shoes.

You might fail your first test. Cry a lot then get over it. – I didn’t, but that doesn’t mean I never did.

Even though you know everyone has to be smart on some level, all the drama and nonsense you still see is a little disappointing. – It made things more interesting. Kinda like reality TV.

You will spend your loan money on non-school items. Because you have no money. – Thank you, Amazon.

Invest in focus factor. – Never did, never needed it. Anxiety is a strong motivator y’all.

Sleep is for the weak. Caffeine is for the strong. – Wrong, I need sleep so badly all the time. Please sleep.

You’ll get really good at scheduling. MAKE yourself good at it. – I got really good the first few years. Like creepy good. But that only lasts so long.

Studying is completely different. If you undergrad it, you’re in trouble. – Too many of my classmates learned that IMMEDIATELY. I, on the other hand, always struggled so it was just the same but A LOT MORE.

You will completely lose track of time, days and pretty much the outside world. – I still don’t know what day it is.

You will horribly mess up at least once during standardized patient care practice. It will be hilarious for everyone except you. – More than once even.

This year will mark your very last real summer vacation. Use wisely. – Kind of, but not really. It’s the last significant one (if your school is kind) but there are plenty of other opportunities to live life.

Second year

Tears will be shed because you didn’t realize how good you had it in first year. – Not until January. That’s when you start missing first year. At least I did.

Every first year will somehow look like babies, no matter their age. – Very much yes. All so young, and full of hope.

At this point they want you to do other things. Like volunteering, research and be involved on campus. Do them and know that you can sleep when you’re dead. – They as in residencies. They do want fluff, good, passionate fluff. But please sleep.

If you chose to be a TA for a first year class be ready to have to restudy the subject so you can actually be helpful. – Um, yes?

You should know your perfect study nirvana by this point. – Sorry, that answer is incorrect. Thanks for playing.

You will have multiple complete mental breakdowns ranging between “why did I do this to myself?” and realizing you know how to kill yourself far too many ways. – Oh second year. Never again.

Never make definitive plans. Non-meds just don’t seem to understand why you can’t just study later. – Or just don’t make plans at all. Show up when you want. Live on the edge of acceptability.

Try your best to keep contact with a few people from the outside world. Try. – There will be a lot of contact with the boards crazy. You need the support.

Most schools end their MS2 years early to allow time to study for the boards. – Mine kinda did? I was going to fight my faculty about it, no joke.

Say good riddance to lectures! – In class lectures, anyways.

Studying for boards is your new job. – Is it even a job? It’s more like being in hell, but hey your friends are there.

After you get through boards you will sleep, party, then sleep some more. – I literally have no recollection of the week after step 1. None. I repressed it.

Third year

Being yelled at will be normal. – Most of the time it’s a stern tone with impending disappointment.

Being told you’re an idiot is also normal. – While it did happen, much less than anticipated which was nice.

Find a place to cry where no one can see you. – Bathrooms, cars, student areas, public areas. Whatever.

You will do a comprehensive session with a patient only to find out they lied to you for 30 minutes when the doctor asks them the same questions. – Stare at patient while doctor speaks to them. Assert dominance. You know. They know.

Be nice to the nurses. They know all secrets. – Absolutely true.

You will put on the spot all the time. Don’t worry; you’ll stop flinching every time anyone asks you a question. Eventually. – It’s more just acceptance that this is how it is. You won’t flinch because the apathy to being pimped is so strong.

How long can you go without sleep? Find out in third year! – 29 hours is my current record.

Learn to impress. You need LORs for residency programs. Asking a lot of questions helps you do this. – Honestly, being the best version of you helps you with this. The people who get you will be the people who stand for you.

Something at some point will make you pass out/throw up/cringe so hard you reconsider your entire life. – Wound care.

At some point, a patient will throw up/excrete something/have an mass explode all over you. And your reaction will be the essence of perfection. – This was literally just live birth for me. A human exploding into existence covered in every juice. That’s why I will never do OB.

The end of written exams! (Besides the boards, obviously). – Nope. Somehow they manage to sneak in just a few more here and there.

You will figure out what kind of physician YOU NEVER WANT TO BE. – Yes.

And you’ll figure what you actually like and what you could see yourself doing as a doctor. – You get there. There is still some wiggle room but there usually is direction you can feel.

Fourth year

Boards AGAIN. – Back again, but with less gusto.

This will be your most relaxed, easy year of medical school. Comparatively. – In terms of studying yes, in terms of anxiety not so much.

You get to pick rotation sites! Do your best to get them to match up to the places you interview at because you’re already strapped for cash. – Only if you’re lucky really. It’s so much more random and complicated than people made it seem.

There are dinners the night before interviews. GO TO THESE. – Yes! Go if can! Very important to see how the residents coexist!

Make ALL the connections! And not just with the doctors! Get in with the residents. – Residents have the secret power. They may not get you in but oh boy can they get you out.

Match is confusing and stressful, but it’s actually applicant oriented. So that’s nice. – I mean. That’s what we’re told. We’re told a lot of things.

The only people who say match day isn’t bad are the people who matched. – It was still pretty awful waiting around until 12 PM. It just ended well for me, somehow.

Now is your chance to reconnect with people. A lot goes by in 4 years. – Well considering I’m having a huge wedding, yeah. But that’s just me.

If you make it through the most amazing hell journey, you are award with your degree and become a real to life Doctor. – I’m just a dork with a doctoral degree.

Getting out of medical school doesn’t mean you actually know anything though. You got years to go kid. – Amen.
