Article 13 - Let’s talk about it.
I am just going to be straight up honest with you all here: I just don’t get these articles. I go online and I read so many conflicting stories and posts that I never know what to think about it. Yet it is a genuine real thing and in all honesty, it absolutely terrifies me.
I’m British so I’m from the UK, Europe (just about but I’m not here to talk about Brexit or stuff like that) which is why Article 13 has brought about such a reaction from me because from what I’ve been reading it appears to be something that can restrict the way in which I use the internet.
From all the countless stories I’ve read on Article 13 the things that concern me is the fact that people who create stuff and post them and earn an honest living could have their jobs in jeopardy because of it as Article 13 will apparently force every site to create an upload filter which could pretty much block anything that they deem to have copyrighted material on it. Whilst I’m shaky on the details. Nothing I’ve read sounds at all positive which is why I’m afraid that what I watch on YouTube might be blocked, that I wouldn’t be able to posts gifs, screenshot and put artistic flares on pictures from my favourite shows and movies, write fanfictions and even when the time comes that I’ve finished it that I wouldn’t be able to post content about my original book because I wouldn’t be able to use my beloved Tumblr account. This is what I fear could happen if these articles are passed and thinking about this has physically sent me into spirals of panic and severe anxiety.
I don’t talk about myself online. I don’t like to do so and I don’t like to speak about myself in general but I am going to right now because of the genuine concerns I have about what would happen if the worst was to come and I’ve only ever told a few people about this. I am a person who struggles with self injury on a regular basis and I relapsed recently. I mention this purely because most of the reasons why I haven’t just gone too deep or have done something really, really dangerous is because of all this: Tumblr, I just got over a hundred followers and I genuinely cried because I just cannot believe that people actually liked my random fandom enough that they’ve followed me. Yet my main reason is that I have met some wonderful people on this site. People who I find easier to talk to then people I actually know in person like @swingrlm who has followed a couple of my Arrow & Shannara fanfictions that I love to write. I am so grateful to all the kind messages and reviews I have received from swingrlm because I know that without them I might have done something really really stupid last week & @sabrinavictoriaspellman who ever so kindly talked to me about the new Sabrina show and for just being a wonderful person willing to speak to someone like me.
Whilst that is my main reason, the wonderful people I’ve met on this site. It’s also my ability to express myself through my love of Doctor Who, Sabrina, the Arrowverse and so many more wonderful shows and films by showing my love for them by creating terrible gifs, artistically altering pictures of all my favourite characters, watching edits on YouTube, making my own edits on YouTube. I recently hit 100 subscribers on YouTube despite my terrible windows movie maker editing skills for my vids and I was so happy. It’s everything fandom that keeps me going, that gives me a reason to keep fighting against the more negative thoughts that I have and the only reason I’m saying any of this is because I am afraid that if Article 13 is passed then I am going to lose it all. The friends that I’ve made online, My YouTube & Tumblr channel, my fanfictions. That’s a big one for me because I’ve got stories I need to complete and are nowhere near completion. I can’t do that to all my followers and favourites. It would break me if I couldn’t post and just disappeared without a reason why because of Article 13 blocking me from posting anything if that did happen and art... I don’t know if I would lose it all but from everything I’ve read it feels like there is a possibility which is the only reason why I’m saying anything.
Again, please don’t take anything I say as the truth because I have read so many conflicting resources on this that has just made me spiral even more into a bad headspace.
I want nothing more than people to get fair pay and that. I do but I want to be able to express my love for my fandoms. To show the world how much it means to me because as a hopeful soon-to-be author I would love nothing more than to see just one person who loved my work enough to create art, vids and more out of it.
I hope that fair use gets taken into account if these laws are passed but I’m terrified that it still might not be enough because everything is so. Bloody. Vague.
Which is why I’m going to ask you all to do something I’ve already done. It might not be enough but when I did it it felt like I did something. I signed the petition on change.org.
Go and look for it if you read this post. I don’t want to post the link just because of all this accounts getting deleted and stuff on Tumblr right now.
I wish you all a good day.
Please, Europe, don’t take away my tools to express myself and show my love for my fandoms with Article 13

#SaveShadowhunters Media Highlights: UPDATED
Here are a collection of media highlights from articles that have been written post-cancellation. To view the original articles, please use the links included via each media outlet’s name.
Week #1
JUNE 5, 2018
Just Jared: “Shadowhunters fans are the best fans there are.”
JUNE 9, 2018
Buzzfeed Community: “It’s not hard to imagine why the show has become so important to the LGBTQ+ community, as a genre show that accepts, normalises and embraces these characters. It seems clear that the fans of the show have decided if they can’t save their show, they can at least save some lives.”
TV After Dark: “Shadowhunters fans are dedicated, passionate and loyal. What more could you ask for in a fan? From the moment the show was announced back in 2015 the fans have always been behind the show, showing their support and their willingness to act on something when it is needed. This cancellation is not only breaking their hearts but also telling them that all their effort and enthusiasm is not being considered or is not making a difference at all.”
TV After Dark: “ One thing is for sure, never underestimate the power of the Shadowhunters fandom, they are a force to be reckoned with. To the fans, we encourage you to keep fighting and being as vocal as you are being so far. You are an example of what a lot of shows wish their followings would be, but only a few, like Shadowhunters, get to experience.”
JUNE 10, 2018
CarterMatt: “When it comes to petitions to save shows from cancellation, often they can have varying effects. When they only muster a few thousand signatures, they can be a little bit easier to ignore. However, once you get past the 30,000 or so range, they start to become quite a bit deal. The one to save Shadowhunters is nearing 100,000 internet signatures over on Change.org, and that’s a figure that you absolutely cannot ignore. Let’s put this in a little bit of a deeper perspective. On average, Shadowhunters season 3 is watched live in America by almost 400,000 people. While we understand that not every signer of said petition is located in the United States, that’s still an incredible ratio of petitioners to viewers. It’s one of the best we’ve seen. It’s another reminder of how active and engaged this fandom is — it has long been one of the largest social shows on all television and that certainly isn’t changing now.”
The Series Regulars: “So in other words, this is not just a show to the fans. It is a reflection of what they have experienced in their own lives. The show’s storylines give them the courage and strength to know their own importance in life. Having this show on air has helped so many individuals.”
Week #2
JUNE 11, 2018
CarterMatt: “This all shows the power of fandom — it’s so much more important than cynical people will ever recognize. You form emotional connections to shows when they are on and they become a key part of your life. With a show like Shadowhunters, that’s probably true more so than most other shows out there just because it carries with it such a strong, inspirational message of inclusion and equality.”
Film Daily: “It’s also worth noting that Shadowhunters fans are some of the most passionate you’ll find online. To many, it’s more than just a TV show – it’s a lifeline offering diverse and powerful LGBTQI representation, progressive depictions of gender, and thoughtful reflections on current social issues.”
Film Daily: “At this stage, the Shadowhunters fandom are much more than just a collective of people who love the show; it’s become a movement rooted within popular culture. With such impassioned efforts by fans to save Shadowhunters and to support LGBTQI young people who may draw strength and acceptance from the show, it’s ludicrous to imagine that not one single network or SVOD would step up to save it.”
Film Daily: “Why an SVOD service like Netflix would allow for the cancellation of a show with a colossal fan base like Shadowhunters is quite frankly bewildering in that respect. Streaming should be the saviour of television when it comes to fringe shows with huge fan followings and it’s a mistake to underestimate the power of such fandoms.”
Hidden Remote: “Showrunner Todd Slavkin has showed support for the fundraiser, but Freeform has been silent so far. Several fans reported that after they had posted the donation link on the official Shadowhunters Facebook page, that the links were later deleted. However, It’s unclear whether someone who runs the account is actually deleting the posts, or if Facebook is filtering them out as spam links without Freeform’s knowledge. Regardless, we hope that Freeform will help support the fundraising campaign by sharing the donation site on their official social media pages soon.”
JUNE 12, 2018
Buzzfeed Community: “The Shadowhunters fans could permanently damage Freeform’s reputation among millennials if they don’t make a statement soon. Do Freeform think by staying quiet the fans will eventually go away and let this be forgotten? It hasn’t worked so far, and frankly, I’m not sure the biggest movement in cancellation history can be forgotten.”
Talk Nerdy With Us: “To call the Shadowhunters fanbase fervent would be a gross understatement. Try: wildly passionate, driven, loyal and LOUD. Right now, they’re raising their voices in unison to save their beloved show.”
Talk Nerdy With Us: “Read the hashtag threads and you’ll see one thing repeated over and over – representation matters. Not only does the show boast one of the most diverse casts ever seen on TV, it broke new ground by prominently featuring gay, lesbian, bisexual and asexual characters in healthy, loving, non-stereotyped roles.”
Talk Nerdy With Us: “Whoever acquires Shadowhunters one thing’s for certain – they will gain a massive fan base with the potential for major bank in tie-in products alone, something that’s sorely been lacking as far as the Shadowfam is concerned.”
TV Series Hub: “What makes Shadowhunters so different than other shows is how hardworking, creative, and inspiring the fans are. With over 2+Million tweets on twitter using the hashtags #SaveShadowhunters and #PickUpShadowhunters this fandom is not going to rest and will not be quieting down any time soon. The fans have also crashed the support links for major streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.”
TV Series Hub: “Freeform’s reasoning behind the show’s cancellation was strictly economical but fans are finding it very hard to believe. When Shadowhunters announced they were going to have a third season it became evident that the lack of promo was going to be the downfall for this show. [...]  Catching the attention for more audience members is no use when the show’s junior season was limited to tweets from Freeform and Shadowhunters main social media accounts.”
JUNE 13, 2018
CarterMatt: “We have full confidence that the showrunners will do their best to come up with a worthy ending if they have to … but why should they have to? [The Teen Choice Awards are] another cause for fans to fight for on social media.”
JUNE 14,  2018
BuzzFeed Community: “What their PR and social media team are thinking is anyone’s guess, but it does not make the company look good. Snubbing actors as beloved as the Shadowhunters cast alone has angered the fans, and their Twitter continues to be unrecognisable as a respectable, professional platform while the fans bombard every posts’ comments with demands for the licensing to be sold so the show can be continued. Their silence is both troubling and the source of their troubles, at least for the foreseeable future.”
CarterMatt: “Do we think that Freeform anticipated some serious backlash over the decision to end the show? Probably, but we have a hard time imagining that they thought it would be on this sort of extreme level. The cancellation has reverberated through multiple fan communities and it is giving everyone motivation to fight to save something that they care about deeply.”
ScreenSpy: “Shadowhunters fans continue to be one of the most awesome fandoms on the internet.”
ScreenSpy: “Shadowhunters was a rare beast among recent broadcast TV shows in that it created space for a grounded love story between two LGBTQ characters, Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) and Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.), that was neither sabotaged, nor ended in a dissatisfying yet familiar breakup/death trope seen in myriad other shows from Supergirl to The 100. In fact, #Malec was often portrayed as the stable emotional core of the series, while other straight couples bore the emotional brunt of sudden deaths, breakups and heated arguments. That the fans have singled out The Trevor Project is telling, and illustrates the compassion and generosity of this unique fandom.”
JUNE 15, 2018
CarterMatt: “So what can be done now for Shadowhunters? First and foremost be inspired, since what happened with Lucifer can almost certainly happen here. It’s an uphill climb, but getting more of Lucifer was also an uphill climb. Think of this as more motivation to keep fighting, trending on social media, and discussing the show. Be organized, and try to come up with specific hashtags to trend and times to trend. Show some of the potential homes out there that you are willing to subscribe to their products.Above all else, be positive and hopeful and stick together — a little bit of unity can go a long way. While there are still twelve more episodes coming for Shadowhunters, those by no means have to be the end. Fingers crossed that they aren’t.”
JUNE 16, 2018
CarterMatt: “There hasn’t been any word out there as to potential other homes for the show, but at the same time there wasn’t all that much in the way of news out there about the Lucifer revival before it happened at Netflix. Sometimes, negotiations happen under a veil since you don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up in the event that plans fall through.”
JUNE 17, 2018
CarterMatt: “You can see after the fact in some photos from the convention that the entire cast was emotional and some were in tears, which is clearly another reminder that they all love the show and certainly don’t want to let it go. The effort to Save Shadowhunters has been going strong now for a good stretch of time and at this point, it only seems to picking up steam.”
Week #3
JUNE 19, 2018
Buzzfeed Community: “A lack of official statement by all of these parties has not helped matters, none of whom seem willing to speak publicly, but the real casualty of this misinformation and false hope is the fans. Fans are desperate for news, and I would argue the fans deserve better from all of these companies.”
CarterMatt: “We do think there is still a reason for hope, but saving a show is always an uphill battle and will take a lot of effort from fans in order to make it happen. Just remember to keep your voices heard and stay unified — we’ve seen via the past couple of months that anything is possible, even if there are no guarantees.”
The Series Regulars: “No matter what happens, it is clear this show is worth fighting for. Don’t give up.”
JUNE 20, 2018
Zimbio: “If you ever doubted the power of fandom, then you’re in for a major surprise.”
Zimbio: “It’s no secret that Magnus and Alec’s relationship is the anchor of the show. Malec shippers are ride or die to the end and for good reason. Shadowhunters has empowered viewers to be kind to one another amidst adversity and live out their truth.”
JUNE 21, 2018
Entertainment Tonight: “The Shadowhunters fans are channeling their heartache into helping others.”
Entertainment Tonight: “ET reached out to Freeform for a response to the Shadowhunters fandom’s charity efforts, but the network declined to comment.”
Entertainment Tonight: “While the fate of Shadowhunters’ future remains to be seen, it’s clear that hell hath no fury like a fandom scorned – and these fans are using their passion and power to make a positive impact.”
JUNE 22, 2018
CarterMatt: “As you can see in the photos below, the plane is making its way around Netflix sporting the message #SaveShadowhunters as clear as the message can be. It’s really the perfect day for such a banner to fly, given that we’re talking about blue skies and very few clouds. Basically, what we’re trying to say here is that Netflix has to take notice of this. Whether or not they take action remains to be seen but this is clearly one of the biggest displays of fandom possible.”
CarterMatt: “We’ll see if this amounts to anything, but even if it doesn’t, you have to admire greatly the passion and enthusiasm of the fans who wanted to make it happen. They banded together for this in a way very few fandoms do.”
Digital Spy: “It’s official: there’s perhaps no fanbase more dedicated than that of Shadowhunters.”
Hypable: “Behind the hashtag is a movement for promoting what the show promotes every week — passion, loyalty, and the fight to not only survive, but make the world better.”
Hypable: “Loyalty to the seeing the show live on is only one bit of what this fandom has chosen to do during the waiting period. Banding together in the face of uncertainty, utilizing the powers they can tap into (social media, planes, charity), the Shadowhunters fandom is following in the footsteps of their favorite characters.”
TV After Dark: “The Shadowhunters fans keep proving they are a force to be reckoned with.”
TV After Dark: “If we track the numbers from the #SaveShadowhunters hashtag, the tweets cross over the 8 million mark, and that’s only counting one of the hashtags they have been using. They have at least 5 more that they use according to the day they tweet. They are impressibly organized and have even a google document set out with their tweeting plans with the hopes of getting all the fans in the same channel and under the same schedule.”
TV After Dark: “Another thing the Shadowhunters fans are proving to be is very clever. They know how to work with what they have. If they see their show is not getting the promotion it deserves, they create it themselves.”
TV After Dark: “If there is one thing that the #SaveShadowhunters campaign has proven is that the show has it all to succeed, it only needs to be given a proper treatment and the chance to grow. Shadowhunters is making headlines all over the world right now. The decision to cancel the show right when it is taking off and with a season as strong as their current season is right now is probably one of the worst we’ve seen made on TV so far. The show is not ready to say goodbye yet and the cast and the fandom are not ready to let it go. With a fandom as passionate as the Shadowhunters fandom is, you can’t just expect them to stay quiet and not fight for what they believe in.”
TV After Dark: “The Teen Choice Awards nominations help us make a point, Shadowhunters is probably the most successful show its network has right now.If they doesn’t recognize it, we sure hope that another network can step in and see what they are missing. Shadowhunters has everything it takes for a show to be successful. We just really hope that someone listens up and realizes why giving up on it right now is a big mistake.”
TV After Dark: “To all the fans out there, keep being loud and doing what you are doing. Nothing is impossible when it comes to saving TV shows. We continue to stand with you and we truly admire everything that you have accomplished so far.”
JUNE 24, 2018
Clevver TV: “Since Freeform announced that they officially canceled Shadowhunters, fans have been doing everything possible to fight the decision. They’ve protested online, vented their love for the show and even raised over $11,000 to prevent it from saying its final goodbye. It goes without saying, but these stans are seriously dedicated.”
Week #4
JUNE 25, 2018
CarterMatt: “Just think of things this way, if you are a Netflix, an Amazon, an Apple, or any other streaming platform — how impressed are you going to be in the event that #SaveShadowhunters is trending so long after it was initially canceled? It’s a real sign that this is a fandom that isn’t going away and with that, it’s worthy of your time and attention.”
The Nerd Daily: “So why would a network cancel such a show that combines so many unique characters and storylines? Economic reasons seems questionable and it doesn’t seem like a suitable explanation for the Shadowhunters fandom.”
The Nerd Daily: “Never before was friendship made into a source of strength, and for me, this is one of the most beautiful description of friendship I have ever seen in a TV show and it’s also reflected in the fandom. A lot of friendships have been made since the show aired thanks to social media and conventions.”
The Nerd Daily: “The fandom are making their thoughts loud and clear so that they can be heard. Every tweet Freeform makes receives hundred of #SaveShadowhunters comments, even though the tweet is not always related to the show.”
JUNE 26, 2018
Girlfriend: “We’ve seen many beloved shows canceled over the years, but none have garnered the response in fans that Shadowhunters has.”
JUNE 27, 2018
Hidden Remote: “The Shadowhunters fandom has unified and rallied together over the past several weeks to fight for a fourth season pick-up. Inspired by fans from other series that were also canceled (and revived) this year, Shadowhunters fans have used Twitter power-hours, strategic messaging and emailing with networks, and have now kicked their marketing up a notch. And when I say “up,” I mean sky-high.”
Hidden Remote: “What fans didn’t realize in their Netflix-targeted planning, however, was that the show’s writers room (which is currently working on the 2-hour series finale) was also in sight of the plane banner. Even if the #ShadowhuntersPlane is unsuccessful at getting a season 4 pick-up, it was absolutely successful in showing the cast, writers, and creative team just how much they are loved and supported.”
JUNE 28, 2018
CarterMatt: “This is the second straight week where the fan base has come out with some sort of big move to get the attention of various networks / streaming homes. This follows their move to fly an airplane banner over Netflix — this time around, there is no specific provider that fans are seeking out, which means that this sort of move could catch the attention of just about anyone. In between this, raising more than $17,000 for The Trevor Project, and campaigning constantly across social media, these are fans who are determined and are not giving up.”
CarterMatt: “While networks may be big business and often have to think in terms of the bottom line, rest assured that many of them also want to be loved! Imagine how much goodwill would come out of one of these networks opting to bring Shadowhunters back on the air. We’re sure that there are some potential homes out there who are well aware of that and would embrace the opportunity to make many fans happy by releasing some great news on the subject of one of their favorite shows.”
The Series Regulars: “To put things into perspective, the campaign has been going strong since we first talked about the fandom effort to save the show.. Not only have they reached over 9 million tweets with the #SaveShadowhunters hashtag, but they have also raised over $17,000 for The Trevor Project. In addition, they have also raised awareness for Girls Up and have even created Shadowhunters Merchandise with proceeds going to charity as well.”
The Series Regulars: “With how much the campaign to save the show has accomplished already, we are looking forward to seeing what else they can do!”
JUNE 29, 2018
CarterMatt: “The act of [having a billboard] itself is impressive, largely because there are so few fandoms who have tried some of the things that the Shadowhunters fandom have with this sort of scale. They’ve really put their best foot forward in trying to save the show using passion and positive energy. We love the idea of this, just as much as we love the fact that every possible home out there can see this and realize that this is a fandom that is not going away.”
CarterMatt: “For now, congratulations to all Shadowhunters supporters — regardless of what happens, you’ve got a lot to be proud of for all of your efforts.”
Digital Spy: “Shadowhunters fans truly are a dedicated bunch! On Friday (June 29), the fans made good on their promise to take out a billboard in Times Square in hopes of saving their favourite show. Good luck to the #SAVESHADOWHUNTERS brigade!”
JUNE 30, 2018
CarterMatt: “The efforts to try to save the show are noticed and very much appreciated. For some more insight into that, all you have to do is look at some of the latest reactions to Friday’s Times Square billboard via show executive producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin.”
CarterMatt: “We don’t think that the efforts to save the show behind the scenes are over and done with yet, either. If there was no hope that the series could find a future home, don’t you think that message would be conveyed? The last thing that anyone wants to do is allow fans to hold onto false hope, and with that, we don’t exactly think that is happening here, either.”
The Series Regulars: “We spoke with Brie, the editor in chief of Basic Shadowhunters Stuff about their contributions and collaboration with the fandom and other sites/accounts. She emphasized that the goal behind these efforts is to “be loud” and take any steps possible to display the devoted passion that fans have for Shadowhunters, and we have to say, this loyal fanbase has been doing one hell of an amazing job.”
The Series Regulars: “The Shadowhunters fandom is extremely loyal, and people all around the world have banded together to do what they can to make their voices heard. This has included campaigns such as the Times Square billboard, tweeting out to anyone and everyone, and sending out emails voicing their passion for the series. It has been a group effort, and everyone has been in constant communication to make all these campaigns come together. Isn’t fandom such a wonderful thing?”
Week #5
JULY 2, 2018
CarterMatt: “Think about that. Ten million tweets. That’s an expression of passion that is almost unprecedented since we are talking about a series that was canceled on June 4.”
CarterMatt: “So how much does this threshold help the show? We actually think it’s one of the biggest achievements made during the campaign to save the show so far. One of the things that you do need to remember is that network executives are often very busy, and with that they don’t have the time in which to look at every single tweet or thing that the fandom is doing to save the show. It’s often helpful to have some sort of big, headline-making announcement that they can look at and understand easily. That’s what the plane banner was, and the same goes for the billboard and the donations for the Trevor Project. Here, they can just see the number 10 million and have their jaws hit the ground.”
Clevver TV: “After raising thousands of dollars, getting millions of signatures and even buying a freakin’ planeto fly over the Netflix headquarters, Shadowhunters fans are back at it again with another attempt to save the show from cancellation. What’s left for them to do, you may ask? Oh, just casually purchasing a billboard in New York City’s Times Square.”
Clevver TV: “It’s been almost a month since it was announced that Freeform would not be renewing Shadowhunters for a fourth season, but fans are showing no signs of slowing down their efforts to getting the network (or a different network/streaming service) to change its mind. They have a TON of reasons why the show shouldn’t be canceled, so we think it’s safe to assume the fight will continue for a long time.”
Netflix Life: “Many fans are still feeling blindsided by this news, but even more, fans are not mourning the loss of the show. Rather, they’re fighting to save the show and the fan movement has responded in a big way.”
Netflix Life: “It’s a huge success abroad where the series streams on various regions on Netflix, but unfortunately, it’s not on Netflix US. It would make for a wise investment by Netflix to consider saving the show once it finishes its run on Freeform next year.
Netflix Life: “I do know the fans will never stop fighting for the show to continue. That’s something McNamara has been blown away by in the last month since the news broke.”
JULY 5, 2018
CarterMatt: “The fandom’s been global for many years now, but there are more examples of its international popularity now than potentially ever before.”
CarterMatt: “How much are things like banners and advertisements helping? We think personally they’re probably more impactful than many out there are giving them credit for. It’s something that is physical and tangible that executives can look at. If they are on the fence about picking up Shadowhunters, maybe this will convince them to give the series a closer look. The biggest thing that all of these campaigns achieve is reminding everyone in the industry that Shadowhunters fans are out there and cannot be forgotten about. What makes this particular campaign stand out is not only the resiliency of it, but also the creativity and the dedication from people involved.”
Netflix Life: “There are very few shows that have a loyal fanbase like Shadowhunters. More of these types of fanbases have come out in recent years, with the likes of Timeless and Lucifer, but the Shadowhunters fans have taken things to a whole new level. If Netflix was worried about fan commitment, then the recent efforts to save the series would help to ease them.”
Netflix Life: “No other fandom has been quite as vocal and loyal.”
Netflix Life: “And this has become more of a family than anything else. Fans have found their tribe in social media groups and platforms. They’ve celebrated births and marriages, they’ve commiserated deaths together, and they’ve supported one another in dark times—and these are in real life situations and not just the events within the series.”
Netflix Life: “If you take a look at any relationship poll for TV shows, you’ll see the shipper name Malec up there. This is the Shadowhunter ship of Alec and Magnus, one of the most progressive, positive, and public LGBTQ relationships on TV. There are very few that even come close.”
Netflix Life: “The show is all about inclusivity (unless you’re a demon from the Shadow World, of course!) and wants to encourage more growth when it comes to people of color and LGBTQ relationships. Netflix needs to encourage that more. It’s already canceled Everything Sucks! Don’t let Shadowhunters go too! This representation is extremely necessary.”
Netflix Life: “With the right marketing, Netflix could help this series grow in the way that it should. More people around the world can learn about it and tune in for every episode. The series would gain better treatment than ever before, helping it become the book adaptation of the generation. There is certainly potential there and it needs a streaming service like Netflix to take that up.”
JULY 6, 2018
CarterMatt: “You can see via the posts on Twitter below that there is a collaborative book coming entitled Love Makes Us Stronger, one that is meant to show many different networks and shows everything that they have done to date in order to work to make another season happen. This is a series that knows no bounds and is showing, time and time again, that fans will do whatever it takes in order to ensure that there is more of the story told. This book is meant to be delivered to not only many different prospective networks, but then also The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which we do think would be a wonderful venue to discuss the series and its hopes at another season further.”
Pure Fandom: “It’s impossible to deny that the Shadowhunters fandom is made up of the most devoted fans to date.”
Pure Fandom: “In all my years following television, the uproar over Shadowhunters’ cancellation is probably one of the biggest ones I’ve ever seen.”
Pure Fandom: “With a fanbase this big and powerful, it looks like the decision to drop Shadowhunters may not have been a good call on Freeform’s part.Fans’ efforts to #PickUpShadowhunters is still going strong, and we’re with you! We’ll keep fighting until Shadowhunters finds a new home!”
JULY 8, 2018
CarterMatt: “Basically, the message that we’re trying to get across here is rather simple: Sometimes, no news can be good news. Just because it seems like networks and streaming providers are ignoring Shadowhunters doesn’t mean that they are avoiding picking up the show’s future.”
Week #6
JULY 9, 2018
CarterMatt: “What’s the objective with this particular hashtag? It’s a way to show more just how much this show is beloved all over the world, and in turn the sheer number of fans who stand to be let down in the event that Shadowhunters does not end up finding a home somewhere else.”
JULY 11, 2018
CarterMatt: “For now, our advice is the same: Keep doing what you’re doing in making sure that your voices are heard.
Hypable: “From billboards in Times Square to subway stops on Korea to planes flying over Netflix, there is no limit to what this fandom will continue to do to drive awareness to their passion and love for the series. In addition to the flashier efforts, the fans have also raised a considerable about of money for charitable causes in the name of saving the show. Practicing what the show portrays every week, the fans are aiding those who need help the most, even as they struggle with their own disappointment.”
Just Jared: “And yes, they see you with the #SaveShadowhunters campaign.Martin shared that the company is ‘amazed by the dedication and persistence of the incredible fandom of Shadowhunters and the #SaveShadowhunters campaign. We are in ongoing discussions with the network and Netflix to how we can continue to bring Cassandra Clare’s vision to television.’”
JULY 12, 2018
CarterMatt: “Recently, Martin Moszkowicz and Oliver Berben of production company Constantin Film were sent a rather generous amount of Shadowhunters-themed M&Ms, ones that were decorated with familiar show iconography alongside the message to #SaveShadowhunters. Both parties shared photos of the candy on social media, which we like to think that there is some commitment there to the cause.”
CarterMatt: “Typically, the easiest way to tell whether or not someone really wants to come back to a show is whether or not they acknowledge the effort that is going on with fans. We do think that everyone at Constantin wants Shadowhunters back since it is a way for them to earn extra money.”
ClevverTV: “Shadowhunters fans are doing everything — literally EVERYTHING — to save their favorite show from being canceled.”
JULY 13, 2018
CarterMatt: “How much sway could Korea’s audience have in saving the show internationally? If the outreach is enough, a bit more than many would immediately assume. Seoul is one of the biggest markets in the world with an active, engaged young audience. These are the sort of people who will celebrate an inclusive, action-packed show that makes you care about its characters.”
CarterMatt: “Basically, remember that sometimes, saving a show is a marathon rather than a sprint and it can take so much longer than anyone would anticipate from the jump.”
CarterMatt: “Just in case you needed a reminder as to how busy Katherine McNamara is at the moment, she did this table read on Thursday, then flew out to Milan in order to be present for fans at the Italian Institute Con this weekend. That is dedication! It’s a also a reminder of how much she loves her fans given that this is a pretty emotional time.”
CarterMatt: “If there is one thing that is probably serving as the wind under the sails for many cast members, it’s this: No matter what is going on with production of these remaining two episodes, the #SaveShadowhunters movement continues.”
Cinema Blend: “Fans of Freeform’s Shadowhunters are not giving up on their show without a fight. Taking their battle to streaming networks such as Netflix and Amazon, the hope to be heard and the effort to save the beloved series has only grown stronger.”
KSiteTV: “Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz told Deadline that Constantin is “amazed by the dedication and persistence of the incredible fandom of Shadowhunters and the #SaveShadowhunters campaign, and that they are “in ongoing discussions with the network and Netflix to how we can continue to bring Cassandra Claire’s vision to television.” Okay, then make it happen already.I’m not without hope, and fans shouldn’t be either. But really, Freeform, Constantin: Talk it over. Negotiate. You’re sitting on a gold mine. #SaveShadowhunters.”
The Fandom: “But this fandom is not going down without a fight. So far, the fans have tweeted #SaveShadowhunters over 10 million times, flew a plane with a #SaveShadowhunters banner around Netflix’s LA headquarters, rented two billboards in Times Square and most impressively, it’s raised over $20,000 for various charities.Even as I write this post, the fandom’s been hard at work, running a month-long campaign in the Seoul subway and planning to soon hit London with double-decker bus ads. In a less grand fashion, fans have been flooding the mailboxes of network executives and it looks like network executives are paying attention.”
Week #7
JULY 16, 2018
AnneMoss.com: “For many people, these characters have been the first time that they have seen each other fully represented on a TV screen.Heartbreaking testimonials can be found all over the Internet of people who would be in a significantly worse place without this show. In short, it has saved lives.”
JULY 19, 2018
CarterMatt: “While there may not be a formal Shadowhunters panel at Comic-Con this year, the folks behind the effort to save the show have still found a way to have their voice heard. Specifically, they are doing it in the form of pedicabs with the #SaveShadowhunters message front and center.”
CarterMatt: “We do think that out of all of the fun ideas we’ve seen with Shadowhunters, this is one of the most valuable given that there are hundreds of thousands of TV fans crammed into a small space the next few days; meanwhile, you’ve also got a number of network executives and other important industry people around. You never know when someone is going to stumble across something you’ve created! It’s another reason to have hope if you are a diehard Shadowhunters fan.”
Digital Spy: “We’ve seen political campaigns less organised than this. Bravo, Shadowhunters stans.”
JULY 20, 2018
CarterMatt: “These expressions of support by the fans go a long way. If nothing else, they are a clear reminder that Shadowhunters is a show that other networks / streaming providers should consider bringing back for more.”
CarterMatt: “Also, Comic-Con is one of the perfect venues to make a big campaign statement — there are probably more people from the entertainment industry concentrated in one place here than any other TV-related event out there, save for maybe the Emmys or the Golden Globes.”
Film Daily: “If you ever needed infallible proof that fandoms rule TV shows (and not the other way around), you need to be keeping up with the Shadowhunters fandom and more specifically the #SaveShadowhunters campaign. These aren’t just the most passionate and vocal fans – they’re also the most organized and resourceful.”
Film Daily: “Like almost everything at the SDCC, the pedicabs are open to sponsorship from advertisers – but this may be the first time they’ve commandeered by fans in a bid to make a provocative statement that could save a show. Like most other networks, Freeform has a presence at the convention and we can’t imagine that this stunt will sit well with the network, but that’s precisely the point. Shadowhunters fans will not allow for their show to go and are fighting the cancellation with everything they’ve got. Which makes us wonder at this point why Shadowhunters hasn’t been saved yet. If this campaign has proven anything, it’s that there’s a tangible and sizeable fanbase attached to the show more than worthy of investing in.”
Film Daily: “Whatever happens, the Shadowhunters fans are absolutely killing it right now. For them not to see the story back on the small (or big) screen again is almost unfathomable. Someone, somewhere, has to take charge now and make this happen – the fans absolutely deserve it.”
Just Jared: “The Save Shadowhunters campaign is not slowing down. If anything, it’s heating up.”
JULY 22, 2018
CarterMatt: “Yang’s appearance gives even more credibility to the campaign, which of course already had quite a bit of it thanks to some social-media acknowledgement from everyone from executive producers Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer to stars Katherine McNamara and Isaiah Mustafa. (Read more about their reactions over at the link here.) There are clearly many who have taken note of the campaign down at SDCC, which also includes promotional flyers and buttons.”
Hidden Remote: “Jack Yang, who plays Asmodeus on the series, stopped by SDCC today cosplaying as his own character. Not only did he want to come see the pedicab, but he even jumped in! [...] The Shadowhunters pedicabs aren’t able to travel all the way to Edom, but we hope Asmodeus had a fun time checking out the Shadowhunters representation at SDCC!”
Week #8
JULY 23, 2018
CarterMatt: “Just in case you were wondering how popular Shadowhunters really was at San Diego Comic-Con, let’s just say that it achieved a really rare feat: Social-media dominance without even having a panel at the event.  Per the tweet (via Alex Zalben) below, the currently-canceled series was the fifth most-tweeted-about show during the convention this year. It was ahead of such staples as Arrow, Supergirl, and The Flash, and even one of the other most-popular shows on social media out there in Wynonna Earp. The only ones that fared better were The Clone Wars, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, and Voltron — which are all properties that have been around for an extremely long period of time.”
Decider: “Timeless, which dominated leading into the Con, and flew a helicopter around trying to save the show, didn’t break the top ten. But another fan favorite, canceled show did: Shadowhunters. The Freeform supernatural show didn’t have a panel at the convention, but it does have a legion of loyal fans tweeting to #SaveShadowhunters almost constantly. Hence the number five slot on the Twitter list.”
Hidden Remote: “By the angel, we think the #SaveShadowhunters campaign is going to love this. @TwitterTVreported today that Shadowhunters was the fifth most-tweeted show during San Diego Comic-Con. Freeform did not bring the series to SDCC like it had done in 2017, but even without a panel, autograph signing, or immersive activation, the show was still incredibly popular on Twitter.”
JULY 24, 2018
CarterMatt: “Following an excellent campaign over at San Diego Comic-Con involving a branded pedicab, flyers, and customized buttons, the Save Shadowhunters campaign is now looking rather rosy. How much so? Let’s just say that they have used as much flower power as possible to get some flower arrangements and customized cards to the Amazon Studios offices plus also Hulu, Netflix, and the offices of production company Constantin Film in Los Angeles. Consider these some further reminders from the Shadowhunters family that this is a fanbase that does not have any plans to give up on finding their show a new home.”
CarterMatt: “There is probably a sense of uncertainty on the set, not knowing precisely what the future of the series is; nonetheless, you have to imagine that it is enormously flattering for the cast and crew to routinely hear that there are so many people who want more of the show and also them as these characters. That does help in so many ways to ensure that they give their best performances possible.”
CarterMatt: “The best thing that any fan of the series can do right now is stay active, and stay engaged, when it comes to trying to save the show. Often, saving shows really is a marathon rather than a race, and networks / streaming providers need to realize that this is a group of fans who cannot be forgotten about.”
Film Daily: “After Freeform chose not to do a Shadowhunters panel at San Diego Comic Con for what could be the final ever season of the show (unless it’s rightfully saved), fans threw a sassy hair flip in Freeform’s general direction and set up their own celebration of the show. That celebration was part protest and part promotion in support of the ongoing #SaveShadowhunters campaign that has been ferociously demonstrated by fans since the young adult series was cancelled at the start of June. The centerpiece? A #SaveShadowhunters pedicab that circled SDCC.”
Film Daily: “According to a fan on Twitter, one especially cool driver let fans ride on the pedicabs for free, installed a speaker so the Shadowhunters theme tune “This is the Hunt” could be blasted on the journey, and also helped to hand out flyers in support of saving the show. But perhaps the crowning jewel of the #SaveShadowhunters efforts was the appearance of actor Jack Yang, who rocked up to SDCC in character as Asmodeus and rode that pedicab with all the brooding regal swagger of the legit Prince of Hell (cane and all).”
Film Daily: “It’s become clear that Shadowhunters is a show that revolves around unity and chosen family – for fans it offers a lifeline of connection that perhaps can’t be found within other more mainstream shows. It’s exactly what makes the show standout as a much cherished gem on social media, as Shadowhunters actually enjoyed a greater presence than other Freeform shows that were part of the official SDCC schedule.”
Film Daily: “It’s no surprise that during SDCC, the Pure Fandom Awards actually created a category specifically to acknowledge the Shadowhunters fandom by gifting them The 2018 Pure Fan-spiration Award. They deserve it, too. In the time since Shadowhunters has been cancelled, they’ve refused to remain silent and have shown they know how to vocalize their passion and turn it into action – even if it’s just from the periphery. They’re the most punk rock fandom out there right now and it’d be crazy not to listen to them and give them what they want.”
Future Femme: “The Shadowhunters yarn unravelled further over the weekend as the fandom took its campaign to save the venerated show to the San Diego Comic-Con. In case you have not yet been following this ongoing saga of legendary proportions, back in June, Freeform announced the cancellation of the genre show despite execs being “very happy creatively” – a decision that was based on ‘economic reasons.’”
Future Femme: “Like a group of valiant demon hunters, the reaction has been nothing short of Biblical. Launching a #SaveShadowhunters campaign, the dedicated fandom members took to Twitter to share their upset, but they haven’t stopped there and have found active ways to promote their campaign beyond the Twittersphere.”
Future Femme: “All of this is testament to the fandom’s dedication, highlighting a wider statement that shows how audiences now rule the TV shows they watch and not vice-versa. As the nature by which we watch television changes, it’s becoming increasingly evident that a show’s importance isn’t solely based on live metrics and economics anymore and that its story and significance goes beyond the conventional restrictions of entertainment consumption.Shadowhunters offers diverse storylines and depictions of LGBTQI and female characters with complexity that are unrivaled by other young adult shows on TV right now. The fantasy genre provides escapism for its viewers, but it’s also educational – Shadowhunters has strived to move forward with acceptance and inclusivity where others are falling behind and it’s for these reasons the fandom refuses to put down its battle weapons and will not give up in the face of adversity.“
Future Femme: “Another reason the Shadowhunters fandom is so ferociously fighting its corner is that the cast & crew were already teasing season four before the cancellation. This is not a show that has reached a creative dead end and it is certainly not one that fans don’t want to see more from – in fact, Shadowhunterswas the fifth most tweeted about show during this year’s SDCC and yet it didn’t even have an official panel at the event.”
Future Femme: “If the cry is loud enough, the networks have no choice but to listen. And when it comes to Shadowhunters, the outcry is so loud you can hear it from the Shadow World. Now it’s up to Freeform to react, or else risk losing this TV gem and its dedicated fandom for good.”
Week #9
JULY 30, 2018
Digital Spy: “Right now, Netflix isn’t in talks to save the supernatural drama series. But [Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content] did praise the show for having incredibly passionate fans. [...] ‘It has a very active fanbase. I probably get 100 emails or more personally.’ We bet the number of daily emails will double or triple in the wake of Holland's comments!”
Film Daily: “The Shadowhunters fandom has fought the cancellation of their show to the last. Accumulating over 149,000 signatures on a petition to save the show thus far, they’ve also managed to raise funds for a billboard campaign in Times Square, subway posters in Seoul, raised money for charity, and hired campaign-boosting pedicabs at SDCC. Kind of a big deal, ladies and gentlemen.”
Film Daily: “The overwhelmingly passionate fan base should be enough to convince anyone this is a show more than deserving of saving.”
Film Daily: “It seems ludicrous not to serve such a large and passionate fan base by saving Shadowhunters. Somebody has to come through and save this one.”
Pure Fandom: “I started watching in June and after I started my Shadowhunters watch, it didn’t take long for me to see the show’s magic that ignited such fire in the fandom. To put it simply, the show is amazing. It is inclusive, it is bold, the cast is crazy talented, it is visually stunning – but it wasn’t the show that made me fall instantly in love – it was this fandom.”
Pure Fandom: “You have not only managed to rally in the shadows, you have welcomed new members into the family (like me) and continued your messages of love and support for the cast, despite your frustration. You are angry, but you are channeling that anger into a series of productive projects including a charitable donation to the Trevor Project, a NYC Times Square billboard, flowers and cupcakes for the cast, a bike at SDCC and so much more!”
Pure Fandom: “Shadowhunters fans – I know you are tired, but thank you for fighting for this show that you love so much – that I love so much. You never made me feel like I couldn’t join your ranks and fight with you and for that, I am so grateful. Fandoms like this are few and far between and I will never take for granted that you welcomed me so effortlessly into yours.”
JULY 31,  2018
CarterMatt: “The Trevor Project fundraiser...has officially reached more than $20,000. That’s an incredible number when you think about just how many people it is going to help. This is taking the message of inclusion and acceptance from the show and finding a way to pay it forward. It’s something that is both powerful and important in so many ways beyond what we can possibly try and spell out here.”
CarterMatt: “The official petition to save the show has officially reached 150,000 signatures! Typically, we think that any petition that reaches more than 50,000 is showing itself as one that cannot be ignored; this one has reached three times that, and there is still so much further that it could go”
Hidden Remote: “Fans should be incredibly proud of the global efforts made over the past two months to support #SaveShadowhunters, which now feels more like a movement than a campaign. The fandom’s fundraiser for The Trevor Project crossed the $20,000 mark on Monday morning, and the donations continue to grow in honor of the series.”
Hidden Remote: “Shadowhunters fans show no signs of slowing down the fight to get a full fourth season for the series, and they continue to show love for the Toronto team during the last (known) days of production.”

Allllllright so here we are, as promised, a masterpost of some of the crazy stuff that has happened in the One Direction fandom since the beginning of time. This list definitely isn’t exhaustive because I’m pretty sure it’s virtually impossible for someone to remember absolutely everything so feel free to message me/reblog with additions, but with that said lets get going:
Tumblr media
1) #LETNIALLSING
off to a great start!!! this hashtag was started during a one direction performance pretty early on in their career, when fans noticed that Niall’s mic pack had been turned off during his solo. people immediately thought that it was management (shocker) who turned off his mic because they didn’t think he was talented enough to have a solo during their live shows, and so #LetNiallSing (LNS for short) was born. fans created a petition on change.org (seriously) so that Niall could have his fair share of solos during 1D’s performances, and tons of fan videos and edits were made (example) -- they’re literally amazing please google them. turns out that during the performance that started #LetNiallSing, Niall had accidentally sat down on his mic pack which caused it to turn off which was why you couldn’t hear his voice, so LNS kinda just died. it’s a good memory though.
2) The time that fans “hacked” the CCTV at Auckland airport to watch One Direction wait at their gate
i don’t really have a lot to say for this one but here’s a pic
Tumblr media
3) That time a girl "killed" her chihuahua so 1D would follow her on twitter
this is not real, it’s a little graphic so sorry about that but if you’re gonna blame anybody blame @ illumivato on twitter for tweeting this mess. so theres that.
Tumblr media
4) Stalker Sarah and her accidental feature in the What Makes You Beautiful music video
Stalker Sarah (heres a little background info on her) (is she still around????) was basically a girl who had met like literally every celebrity and had a particular fascination with one direction
Tumblr media
one day someone noticed that Sarah had made a surprise appearance in the background of the What Makes You Beautiful music video. I’m pretty sure this one isn’t real but its still funny and there were a lot of good memes about it back in the day (example)
5) Lewis Jones
Jumping a little ahead in time here, meet Stalker Sarah 2.0, LEWIS JONES. again, not a whole lot to say about him, more of a reminder that all of those pictures exist
6) @ PlasticBieber on Twitter
that one time in 2012 when an 11 year old girl made a twitter account to harass directioners online. here are some of her choice tweets:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and a video of her falling down and hurting herself????? (read the comments)
youtube
7) One Direction (Zouis) vs The Wanted
that whole thing was..... a lot, so here’s an article with a full timeline of the fight. also p.s. The Wanted blame 1D for their breakup which imho is funny to this day
8) That one pic of Louis and Eleanor where people were seriously trying to say that Eleanor was actually Liam in drag
not kidding, that happened. here’s the pic:
Tumblr media
9) The Calder Triplets
This fancy little theory came out of ~2013. The idea was that 1D’s Management recruited 3 actresses to stand in as Louis’ girlfriend on a carefully calculated cycle for reasons that I’m not gonna get into on this post but you can easily google them.
Tumblr media
Eleanor (the only actual Calder) apparently had 2 sisters, Gretchen and Tina, this was mainly because of a number of pictures in which Eleanor’s face looked different, or because of Eleanor’s height differing in comparison to Louis depending on the picture. Here’s a good post that’ll walk you through the whole debacle.
10) Mr. X
Mr. X was this anonymous twitter account that “”””predicted”””” stuff about One Direction and then one day he was like oh yeah btw someones gonna kill Harry and people freaked out and #HarryBeCareful was trending on twitter
Tumblr media
11) Niall Violently Masturbating in Japan
MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE. This is probably one of the funniest One Direction rumours in the world, maybe one of the best pop culture rumours of all time and I am not being dramatic. It is so funny like I don’t know how else to describe it it’s so good. LETS GET TO IT. The story is basically that while One Direction was on tour in Japan, a fan found Niall up in his hotel room “vigorously masturbating”, banging the walls, swearing, and yelling some phrases that could only have been brought to us by the comedy gods themselves; “wey hey”, “up the lads”, and “that’s the craic”. The girl apparently had a video and was blackmailing Niall, saying that if he didn’t “hang out with her” she would release the video.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is (obviously) fake but it’s seriously one of the funniest things that I can think of at any given moment. Here’s a link to a masterpost of some of the jokes that came out if it. So good.
12) The fanfic about Harry that got published into a real legit book
I actually hate this one, I think it’s awful but it was dramatic at the time so here it is.  For completely obvious reasons, Harry’s name in the story had to be changed, so the author changed it to Hardin. I’ll let you mull that one over.
13) One Direction’s trip to Australia when Liam had his underwear stolen straight off of his hotel balcony by some girls who also tried to break into his room
(read these from the bottom up)
Tumblr media
this was also the day that this infamous pic of Liam looking for his underwear was born
Tumblr media
and so was one of my fav moments of a 1D tour ever
Tumblr media
youtube
14) Harry accidentally favourites some 18+ content on twitter
Harry was looking at some good old fashioned twitter porn when he accidentally faved a pretty graphic pic, and then in true Harry fashion made a joke about the weather and faved a bunch of pictures of puppies and kittens to cover it up. Here’s a decent timeline of that day, you can also check out #HarryDontLickAnything on twitter, and scroll down a bit in Harry’s twitter favs to see the aftermath (a.k.a the puppies)
15) Last but definitely not least, Conchobar Tomlinson
Before sweet lil Freddie Tommo (here’s a pic of him just because he is so cute that i cant stand it) was named for real, someone started a rumour that his name would be Conchobar, which is an Irish name that is apparently “pronounced like Connor”. I honestly dont know......but it was hilarious. Here are some of my fav tweets from that day
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and there we have it, hope i reminded you of something you forgot about :)

The label's cofounders apologized and canceled their Shanghai runway repeat, costing them hundreds and hundreds of bucks.
#DGlovesChina ? More cherish #DGdesperateforthatChineseRMB lol. In a voice to additional charm to luxury's covetable Chinese shoppers, @dolcegabbana launched some hella offensive “instructional” movies on the usage of chopsticks. Pandering at it's finest, however taken up a notch by checklist their target demographic as a tired and fraudulent stereotype of a folks missing refinement/culture to understand how one can use foreign foods and an over-the-high embellishment of cliché ambient tune, funny pronunciations of foreign names/phrases, and Chinese subtitles (English added by us), which begs the quiz—who is that this video in reality for? It attempts to focal point on China, however as a substitute mocks them with a parodied imaginative and prescient of what trendy China is no longer any longer...a gag for amusement. Dolce & Gabbana like already removed the flicks from their Chinese social media channels, however no longer Instagram. Stefano Gabbana has been on a great-wanted social media cleanse (up until November 2nd), so presumably he kept himself busy by meddling with the promoting division for this sequence. Who needs to wager the XL cannoli “size” innuendos had been his belief? Lmao. • #dolceandgabbana #altamoda #rtw #dgmillennials #stefanogabbana #shanghai #chinese #italian #cannoli #meme #wtf #tiresome #lame #chopsticks #foodie #tutorial #cuisine #italianfood #asianmodel #asian #chinesefood #dietprada

Peloton's "The Gift That Provides Support" (2019)
Peloton
Peloton's 2019 vacation advert chronicled a skinny lady's scuttle to getting, well, thinner — and became as soon as watched and ridiculed everywhere in the world.
The advert follows a lady's yearlong selfie scuttle after her partner provides her a Peloton bike for the vacations, and it became as soon as criticized for all the pieces from its awkward structure to her partner seemingly suggesting that she wanted to teach extra.

VR vs. Some Very Stern Words
It’s odd what some people get bent out of shape about. Spending your career (I think I can call it that at this point) in an online role means you see plenty of it – and if you’re involved in social media you’re going to see a heck of a lot of it.  You’re also going to get a lot of it too. Over the last decade or so I sort of fell into social media as it rose to be a marketing tool and I’ve had all sorts slung at me down the years. Threats, abuse, slightly too interested in my personal life girls (and guys), people ringing up the office to ask the legal team personal questions about me. The works. So, if you’re gonna call me an idiot just know that, well, I’ve had worse. In fact, I’ve said worse about me myself, so, there you go.
Recently there was an interesting two and eight in the comments about a post where a virtual reality (VR) videogame was announced and someone was very angry it was listed on the ‘PSVR feed’ when it was not a PlayStation VR title. The reason why it was tagged as PlayStation VR was because the developers expressly said they had plans to bring the title to Sony’s headset. News about PSVR? That’ll be tagged PSVR then. Except, they insisted, that was news “not relevant” to PlayStation VR at all. Any title could come to PlayStation VR, so we shouldn’t tag that. It was an interesting argument, one I couldn’t understand for the life of me. The developers expressly mentioned Sony’s headset but it isn’t news about it? Huh?
In the end I apparently failed to explain to their satisfaction that, well, 1 = 1 and we’ll obviously tag a story with whatever it is about. Instead I was a jackass who didn’t know what they were talking about and I should take my “condescending attitude” and “shove it up your Mod ass”. Rather un-phased by the whole thing I just responded that “my ass is glorious and majestic. Thank you for noticing.”
And it is. Very.
All of this got me to thinking about another set of comments we once got on VRFocus. Which had me heading over to YouTube to ‘relive’ what is quite possibly the most epic and, frankly, unhinged rant a channel I’ve had a hand in has ever received.
Now, YouTube is as YouTube does at this point – am I right? Being a channel owner on YouTube is like spinning the wheel on Wheel of Fortune. Who knows, you may have a big hit. At the same time the way YouTube is setup and ever changing its own rules you know there’s the chance all your had work will ultimately be for naught and your channel lost to the ages. It’s felt for a while that YouTube’s ‘Wheel of Fortune’ has been adding more and more ‘bankrupt’ sections as the years roll on. It has also been on a bit of a redesign kick in recent months and a Beta of YouTube Studio is waiting in the wings to fundamentally change the back-end experience for YouTube channels. To that end I got thinking about whether or not the aforementioned rant was still there as I’d been ‘saving it’ for a special occasion.  In that way Social Media Managers always save messages that prove points or are so outrageous as to be something to discuss at later events, panels or what have you.
This rant was particularly special in that it came, of all things, at the expense of the poor Samsung Gear VR. It’s terrible crime? It launched.
Back on November 23rd 2015 we put up the Gear VR Launch trailer aka “It’s Not A Phone, It’s A Galaxy” as Samsung celebrated the launch of their smartphone-based head mounted display (HMD) and showed both it, and some of the Gear VR experiences that you could enjoy at the time, off.
youtube
One man though was very, very angry about this and his name was Chua Neng Lis. I know very little about him. He used to work in a plastics factory in or near Minnesota. He also got very upset about North Korea, America and South Korea once on a CNN video, so I imagine wherever he is now he’s been pretty miffed about the last few months. Lis was not pleased about the situation with the Gear VR at all – especially as he seemed to think he’d come up with the idea in the first place.
I should point out that I’ll be posting the message text as is without changing any punctuation, spelling or presentation.
“thats still not virtual reality. your. just. mocking. and. manipalteing. my. ideas.
and. you. think. its. so. fa faaaanny. cause. the. poor man. can. get. wealthy. off. of. the. poor. mans. idea. so. you. stoled. it. from. him. and. kept. the. poor. man. poor. so. you. can. point. fingers. and. laugh. at. the. poor. man. to. do. something. about. it.”
There is of course something to be said about corporations and capitalism and the ability of the rich and poor to earn a fair living, and on reading the first time I honestly thought up until this point that this is what Lis was trying to convey.
“when. i. take. your. brains. out. youll. understand. how. the. world. goes. round.”
Oh. Okay it wasn’t that at all.
That was just the first of nine messages left on the video by Lis which proceed to get more and more bizarre.
“HOE. WAS TELEPATHY. STEALING MY IDEAS FROM TELEPATHY AND TELEPATHY CHANNEL. OH RIGHT. I CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. BUT WAITE. TO KILL YOU AFTER IM DEAD.
AND NOW YOUR TRYING TO STOP THAT. LOL. NOW ASK YOUR GHOSTS THOUGHTS STEALING FROM. YOU. IS IT EASY OR HARD TO KILL ME AFTER IM DEAD. OR ALIVE.”
Whose ghosts? Ours? Samsung’s? I should point out that no he’s not referring to ghosts as in spooks/spies, but actual ghosts. It seems Lis has a BIG thing about ghosts. Also vampires. According to him America is full of cults and vampires. I blame Buffy. She’s slacking off.
“AND THATS STILL NOT VIRTUAL REALITY. YOUR USEING THAT DEVICE TO STEAL MORE IDEAS. FROM PEOPLES BRAINS AND HEADS. EVEN USEING AND STEALING OLD DATA AND INFORMATION. YOU ALL TOOK PART HACKED. AND STOLED. INTO YOUR OWN MINDS BRAINS AND DATA. TO ACT OUT LIKE ITS YOURS. WHEN YOU KNOW IN YOUR BRAIN AND MIND. ITS NOT YOURS. EVEN IF YOU WOULD. “LIKE”. TO THINK SO.
OH YEAH. ASK YOUR GOVERNMENT. “GHOSTS”.
THEY KNOW I CAN KILL YOU. USEING THAT DEVICE.
NOW HOW ABOUT THAT ARE YOU GOING TO STEAL. AND UPLOAD WHAT I JUST SAY AND SAID. AND MY BRAIN. UP TO THAT DEVICE ALSO TO. CONTROL AND KILL THOSE PEOPLE AND MINDS.”
He can kill ghosts with VR? Literal ghosts working for or with the Government?
“yeah i can kill you with that device of yours. AND IM NOT JOKEING.”
Well, that clears that up at least.
“MISTAKES. ARE MADE. AND PROBLEMS. HAPPEN. AND YOU DONT THINK. I DONT ENJOY OR HAVE FUN. KILLING PEOPLE ON MY OWN. LOLOLOL.
YOU SHOULD LOOK UP YOUR NEWS MEDIA FEEDS. AND HOW MANY DEATH IS OCCUREING. DEFINETLY NOT YOU HOOKING ME UP. ITS YOU HOOKING YOUR SELVES UP. TO. SOMETHING. THATS KILLING YOU. AND WAITEING. WAITEING TO JUST NAB YOU AND KILL YOU RIGHT AFTER. YOUR BRIGHT IDEAS AND SHOWS. ^_^. NOW WHOS WATCHING AND LISTENING TO ME OVER THIER. HRMMMMMMMMMM.”
Yoda’s changed a lot over the years, hasn’t he?
“HONESTLY THOSE GHOSTS GIVEING YOU IDEAS. AINT SAVEING YOU OR YOUR ASS.
YOU CANT CONTROL THEM. THIER CONTROLING YOU.
LOL. CANT HELP YOU THIER BRUHHH. YOU CANT STOP THEM. LOL.”
So if you’re keeping track on this and I can’t blame you if you’re not. Either we, Samsung or the American Government (I assume) are in league with the undead who are stealing minds potentially via VR which isn’t VR and he invented it.
“NOW. WHO CAN STOP THEM. THAT YOU HEARD. YELLING AND TALKING ON TELEPATHY CHANNEL. HRMMMMMM. 2013. was. the. DATE. LOOK IT UP YOUR SELF. I HAVE THE SECRET CODE TO KILL YOU YOUR CULTS RELIGION GOVERNMENT AND RACE OFF. AND YOU THINK. YOUR GOING TO BE RECORDEING MY THOUGHTS ON TELEPATHY.”
Well, no… I mean you’re kind of telling everyone your thoughts via a YouTube comments section. Not really the same thing as telepathy.
Incidentally though reader, those thoughts you’ve been having? Demonetised.
“NOW HRM HRM HRM. WHY WOULD YOU GO AND SAY THAT. YOU CANT EXTRACT THOUGHTS YOUR SELVES. AND WORSHIPING A GHOST TO.
HOW ARE THOSE GAY CULTS. AND GAY VAMPIRES AND VAMPIRES TREATING YOU. HUNTING THEM DOWN VERY WELL. ARENT WE.”
Ah, there are the vampires I mentioned earlier. And yes, he also has something of an issue with homosexuality too. Because clearly we needed some issues with homophobia in the rant as well.
“ALSO YOUR STEALING MY MORES CODE FROM ME. STEALING FROM. TETRIS. AND. ASIANTOWN.NET.
EVEN MY PERSONALITY MORE CODE. WHERE I CREATED MULTIPLE PERSONALITYS. HRMMMM. NOW WHERE AND HOW DID YOU GET THAT FROM. HRMMMMMMMMM. FOR SURE YOU KNOW YOU STOLED. IT. AND FOR SURE. YOUR PLAYING THE BLAME YOUR SELF TO CLAIM GAME. NOT YOURSSSSS. FOOO.”
Yeah, foo. That L block’s got it coming.
“yeah,. to. bad. you. couldnt. kill. me. and. interrupted. my. cause.
AND NOW YOU HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT. KNOWING. I WILL KILL YOU ALL OFF. FOR GOOD. AND HUMANITYS SAFETY. BECAUSE OF YOUR OWN RULES AND LAWS. YOU STATED. ON TELEPATHY CHANNEL. AND IN YOUR MOVIE SCRIPTS SCRIPTS. AND DOCUMENTS. ABOUT ME. AND MY KIND. AND PEOPLE.”
Well, er, I think killing us all off because Gear VR launched is a bit over the top. I mean, why can’t you just write a grumpy petition on Change.org?
I won’t go into the next bit too much because he just descends into ranting about whoever his targets are at this point being gay and getting their comeuppance (I guess?) by being violated by the supernatural. Needless to say, it all comes to a universe redefining climax with the inadvertently hilarious phrase-
“SPIRITS. UP THE BUTT HOLE FOR YOUU. FOO;”
And to prove I’m not making this all up…
Yes, these did get reported by the way and I’m very much hoping someone got to speak to them.
But when you get upset with me or us online just bear this in mind: I’m really not that phased, and that’s because honestly you are not in the same league as someone like this guy. Hell, you aren’t even in the same dimension, probably. And here you were thinking people getting bent out of shape over exclusivity periods was over the top.
More FOO you.

In this edition of Star Wars Bits:
The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi reveals some tantalizing behind-the-scenes tidbits
Mark Hamill hides behind CGI in a second, secretive Last Jedi role
One fan has a change of heart when it comes to The Last Jedi
Daisy Ridley dislikes your “Mary Sue” theory
And much more!
Some of the most impactful scenes in The Last Jedi were apparently added pretty late in the production process. As quoted in The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson explains:
The three flashbacks were a late addition – one of the last things that went into the script before we started shooting. It’s similar to Rashomon, but the actual story motivation was that I wanted some harder kick to Rey’s turn: ‘You didn’t tell me this.’ I wanted some harder line that was crossed – a more defined thing that we could actually see – between Luke and Kylo. I didn’t want to do a big flashback. So one flashback that you repeat three times but that’s just one moment seemed more right.
Read more at ScreenRant.
Also found in The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson talks about the “terrifying” decision to destroy Kylo Ren’s already iconic mask from The Force Awakens:
“By the time we were making the movie, the first film had come out and every kid was wearing Kylo Ren masks on Halloween…. But the whole premise of this film is that you’re getting inside this guy a bit more. More than that, Rey is seeing there’s more to him than she thought. And Adam Driver is one of my favorite actors working today. The notion of getting the mask off of him so we don’t have to deal with it and can look into his eyes seemed really important.”
Also important:  Removing Kylo’s shirt, too, no doubt. Read more at ScreenRant.
ScreenRant found another tidbit in The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in which Rogue One director Gareth Edwards comments on how much the Crait battle looked and felt like his film’s battle on Scarif. (Edwards was on set for a cameo as a Resistance soldier in the trenches of Crait.) Can someone let Edwards know that Star Wars movies generally all contain, uhh, war scenes?
Even though The Last Jedi is now in theaters, Mark Hamill is remaining tight-lipped over a certain TLJ easter egg: whom he played (or voiced) in one of the film’s Canto Bight scenes. EW has more info on Hamill’s cameo, plus some commentary on the mysterious “Force chant”, a dummy version of Leia, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s cameo. (Seriously, why didn’t Finn and Rose just park in a lot? I’m sure Canto Bight validates.)
Talk about an info dump. A glorious, exhilarating, illuminating info dump. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Visual Dictionary, written by Lucasfilm’s own Jedi Sentinel of Star Wars continuity, Pablo Hidalgo, provides details about characters, props, and plot points not supplied in the film itself, like the “name” of Benicio Del Toro’s character, the symbolism of Leia’s new hairstyle, and Poe “Total Bro” Dameron’s specially-designed X-Wing. Check out BleedingCool for a whopping 58 facts gleaned from this precious tome.
ScreenRant highlights the Snoke entry in The Visual Dictionary, which describes Snoke’s purple “Attendants”: “Snoke’s retinue includes mute alien navigators who originated in the Unknown Regions. Were it not for the ancient hyperspace trails blazed by these towering servants, the Imperial survivors who fled into this uncharted realm would certainly have perished.” Does this mean that Snoke, too, hails from the Unknown Regions? Or maybe that his origin will remain forever unknown…
The Last Jedi is nothing if not polarizing, and one fan in particular has taken his internal struggle with the film to new extremes: Henry Walsh, the guy who started a Change.org petition to strike The Last Jedi from the Star Wars canon, now regrets his brief turn to the dark side and explains that he was pretty doped up on pain medication when he created the petition. In an impassioned plea, he expresses his frustration and implores Star Wars fans to help out “important” petitions instead: “I couldn’t get the help on GoFundMe to help pay for my surgery, and yet *this* gets this kind of attention? To the point that this petition has been in multiple news publications at this point? How many other people out there need help and can’t get attention?” Show the galaxy that there’s good in Star Wars fans, and donate to Walsh’s own GoFundMe here.
In an interview with The Playlist, Rian Johnson explains why he brought back Yoda as a Force Ghost instead of Obi-Wan Kenobi during a crucial scene in The Last Jedi. Spoiler alert: it involves a little thing called narrative continuity. “We never saw Luke interact with the Ewan version of Obi Wan, so there’s less of the emotional connection and it might have been a little odd,” said Johnson. Insert Obi-Wan’s slow, disappointed head shake.
Caitlin Busch over at Inverse offers a compelling theory about what happened to Ben Solo’s blue lightsaber after he took on the name of Kylo Ren. Methinks Emo Kylo Ren would approve, too.
As part of an ongoing series on the new creatures of The Last Jedi, StarWars.com talks to concept designer Jake Lunt Davies about the stuffy but fiercely dedicated Caretakers. “Puffin people” FTW!

How the Instagram Algorithm Works (And How to Make it Work For You)
Now that Instagram has reached 700 million monthly active users, there’s way more great content on the network than anyone could possibly hope to keep up with. In fact, according to Instagram’s own numbers, users miss on average 70 percent of the content in their feeds.
With that in mind, the network introduced the Instagram algorithm, which uses a variety of signals to determine which posts appear at the top of a user’s feed. The idea is to make sure each user sees the posts that they’re most likely to care about, increasing overall engagement with the network as a whole.
Bonus: Download a free checklist that reveals the exact steps an adventure photographer used to grow from 0 to 110,000 followers on Instagram with no budget and no expensive gear. Plus we’ll show you how you can use Hootsuite to grow your own following on Instagram and other platforms.
What we know about the Instagram algorithm
For the first six years of its life, Instagram was a simple reverse-chronological feed of posts from the accounts each user followed. Put simply, when you logged in to Instagram, you’d see the most recent posts first, whether they were from your mom or your favourite brand—and regardless of the quality of the post.
Then, in March 2016, Instagram announced it would move from a completely reverse-chronological feed to incorporate the use of an algorithm, and people were not happy. A Change.org petition called “Keep Instagram chronological” gained 70,000 signatures in 24 hours. Nonetheless, the Instagram algorithm implementation moved ahead over the next few months.
While some people are still complaining about the Instagram algorithm today, Instagram says that since the algorithm was implemented, people have been liking and commenting on more photos, and “generally engaging with the community in a more active way.”
Whether users love the Instagram algorithm or hate it, it certainly hasn’t slowed down the network’s growth. Instagram increased its user base by nearly 50 percent in the 10 months after the algorithm was introduced, growing from 500 million users in June 2016 to 700 million in April 2017, with the last 100 million users joining faster than had ever happened before.
Like most social networks, Instagram plays its algorithm cards close to its chest, but the network has revealed a few elements that make up the algorithm.
How does the Instagram algorithm work?
According to an Instagram blog post, the Instagram algorithm change allows users to “see the moments you care about first.” Essentially, it’s all about figuring out what content will interest you and driving it to the top of your feed.
So how does Instagram figure out what you are most likely to care about? The only specific factors Instagram mentions are “the likeliness you’ll be interested in the content,” “your relationship with the person posting” and “the timeliness of the post.”
Speaking to Business Insider, an Instagram spokesperson got a little more specific, noting that the following signals are among those the algorithm considers.
Timeliness
Instagram may no longer be fully reverse-chronological, but the Instagram algorithm takes into account that people want to see fresh and timely posts each time they log in.
What this means for brands: While people won’t necessarily see your post at the exact moment you share it, it’s still important to post at the right time to maximize early engagement. Which brings us to…
Engagement
Since engagement indicates a post is, well, engaging, the Instagram algorithm boosts posts that gain more likes and comments. And since comments take more effort on behalf of the user, these are weighted more heavily than simple likes.
Early engagement is particularly important, because a flurry of initial activity indicates to the Instagram algorithm that a post is worth bumping to the top of other users’ feed, which leads to even more engagement.
What this means for brands: Figure out the best time to post on Instagram for your brand. This will require some testing and digging into Instagram insights (we dive into this in more detail below). Then, post consistently engaging visuals paired with compelling captions that encourage followers to interact with your posts. Put the most important words up front to draw followers in and encourage them to keep reading.
Relationships
Going beyond whether you follow someone, this factor analyzes the depth of your relationship with the person or brand based on how often you tend to engage with their posts over time. If you often like and comment on someone’s photos and videos, you’ll see more of those in your feed.
This helps ensure that you see content from people you have close relationships with even if those people do not have enough followers of their own to get a substantial amount of likes and comments. For example, your mom’s posts will never get as many likes as Kendall Jenner’s (thank goodness). But since you probably like and comment on your mom’s posts often, the Instagram algorithm understands that you want to see what she is posting, even if no one else is engaging with her content.
What this means for brands: It’s important to develop ongoing relationships with your followers. Consistent engagement is more valuable than sporadic engagement, so know what your followers want to see—and engage with—and give them more of that content. Use Instagram Insights to track which posts perform best and then model that content to craft a profile that inspires a loyal and active following.
Profile searches and direct shares
Searching for someone’s account sends a pretty clear signal that you’re interested in seeing more of their content. And sharing someone’s posts with your network through direct messages indicates that you found that content compelling, even if you didn’t publically like or comment on the post. These actions both provide clues to Instagram about “the likeliness you’ll be interested” in posts from a particular account.
What this means for brands: Direct messages are a form of dark social, meaning you can’t track this engagement. But while you can’t see those shares, Instagram is monitoring them in the background. It’s another reason to create compelling content that users will want to share with contacts. To maximize the impact of profile searches, make sure your profile is easy to find, with a fully-completed and optimized Instagram bio.
Benefits of the Instagram algorithm for brands and marketers
The most important benefit of the algorithm for all Instagram users is that it increases engagement, according to Instagram’s recap of its initial algorithm roll-out. But there are a couple of additional benefits for brands that are using Instagram right.
Quality posts rise to the top
As Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s co-founder and CEO, told the New York Times, “What this is about is making sure that the 30 percent you see is the best 30 percent possible.” If you consistently deliver quality content that aligns with your followers’ expectations from your brand, you’ll have an advantage over those who are just churning out a large quantity of lower quality posts.
Posts have a longer lifespan
Before the Instagram algorithm, the half-life of an Instagram post was 72 minutes, meaning it would get half its total engagement within that time. Now, you may notice people liking and commenting on your posts hours or even days later.
That’s especially good news for a brand with a global audience. Keep in mind that 80 percent of Instagram users live outside the United States. Even with great research and testing about the best time to post for your audience, it’s impossible to catch everyone worldwide at the same moment.
Now, if you’re posting great and engaging content, users across the globe are more likely to see posts they may have missed while they were offline.
How to make the Instagram algorithm work in your favor
Not all brands will benefit equally from the Instagram algorithm, so let’s look at some ways to help your content send the right signals to get it noticed.
Focus on quality
Have you caught on yet that the Instagram algorithm makes quality content more important than ever? The algorithm will surface quality posts while burying the duds. Check out our complete guide to using Instagram for loads of great tips, strategies, and best practices for creating quality content on Instagram.
Know your followers
Engagement is the key to success in an algorithm-based world, but it’s important to remember that not every audience will find the same things engaging. That means you have to know your specific audience and understand what is most appealing to them, and what kinds of photos and captions are most likely to inspire them to interact with your posts.
You can gain some great follower intelligence from Instagram Insights, including gender, age, and location information. You can use those details to help create audience personas that will go a long way towards helping you make meaningful connections that increase engagement over time.
The location information will also help you determine the best time to share your content on Instagram to maximize early engagement and send positive signals to the algorithm.
Use appropriate hashtags
Hashtags can help you connect with existing communities on Instagram and find new followers to engage with your content (and, in turn, send value signals to the Instagram algorithm).
Instagram offers the following guidance for using hashtags:
Be specific: For example, choose #vwvan over #van
Be relevant: Relevant hashtags help you connect with people who are actually interested in your content, rather than people who are fishing for like-backs
Be observant: Keep an eye on the hashtags your followers and competitors are using and look for one you haven’t yet incorporated
For more Instagram hashtag strategies and best practices, check out our complete Instagram hashtag guide for business.
Avoid the shadowban
We’ve just told you that using appropriate hashtags can be a good way to extend the reach of your posts. But abusing hashtags could lead to the dreaded shadowban. The shadowban, which Instagram has yet to acknowledge actually exists, is said to be when your account is partially blocked without any notifications—generally, your posts stop appearing in hashtag searches or on the Instagram Explore page.
The best way to avoid the shadowban is to be authentic. Only use hashtags that are relevant to your content, don’t use too many hashtags on one post, and don’t buy followers or use bots to post comments. (Posting repetitive comments or content actually goes against Instagram’s community guidelines.)
Share live video
The amount of time people spend watching video on Instagram increased by 80 percent from June 2016 to June 2017—so posting video can be a good way to catch followers’ attention and get them to spend a little more time interacting with your feed.
But live video takes things up another notch. Unless they have turned off notifications, your followers will see an alert when you start broadcasting a live video on Instagram. That notification appears at the very top of the screen, above the posts sorted by the Instagram algorithm. The notification doesn’t last for long, but it does capture the old-school Instagram feeling of content being shared in real time.
When you finish broadcasting your live video, you can save it to your Instagram Story so that it lives on for 24 hours after you wrap things up.
Try an Instagram pod
Since early engagement on a post is so important to its Instagram algorithm ranking, clever groups of Instagrammers are teaming up to provide likes and comments on each other’s posts.
A pod is simply a small group of Instagrammers who have agreed to support each other in this way. Each time a pod member posts on Instagram, they send out an Instagram DM to the entire private group. Each group member then looks at the post, likes it, and posts a real comment (no bots allowed).
Instagram has so far not indicated its thoughts on the pod strategy, but since it’s real people posting real comments and offering real likes, the strategy seems to fall on the right side of Instragram’s community guidelines.
We offer more details about how to find and participate in a pod in our post on four Instagram secrets you can learn from how teens use the app.
Partner with influencers
Working with influencers is a way to expose your posts to people who are not already following your account, which can help increase engagement, sending important value signals to the Instagram algorithm.
There are three ways you can use an influencer relationship to beat the Instagram algorithm:
The influencer creates original content related to your brand and posts it on their own account. While this won’t directly boost any of your specific posts in the Instagram algorithm, it’s a way to draw attention—and new followers—to your account, creating more algorithm-boosting engagement over time.
You share posts from the influencer on your account, making sure to tag them and use any hashtags the influencer is known for. This will help draw attention and new eyeballs to your post, creating engagement and boosting the post in the Instagram algorithm.
You host an Instagram takeover, in which the influencer literally takes over your account for a day, a week, or whatever time period makes sense for both parties. The influencer should let their followers know they’ll be posting on your account, again sending their followers your way.
We get into much more detail on how to implement these strategies, provide some examples of successful influencer campaigns, and explain how to find influencers in our post on everything you need to know about influencer marketing on social media.
Invest in Instagram ads
Okay, it’s not an organic strategy, but one foolproof way to beat the Instagram algorithm is to pay to boost your posts. This can be anything from promoting an existing post, which only takes a couple of taps, to developing custom ad campaigns and placing your ads through the Ads Manager or Power Editor.
Instagram offers the same ad targeting options as Facebook, so you can get very specific to make the most of your ad budget. We break down all the details on how to create a powerful Instagram ad in our complete guide to Instagram ads for business.

Shadowhunters Fans Surpass 8 Million Tweets in Support of Season 4, Raise $5,500 for The Trevor Project
Hidden Remote. Marissa Massiano. June 11, 2018.
With close to 100,000 signatures, over 8 million tweets, and $5,500 raised for The Trevor Project. The Shadowhunters fandom continues to fight passionately for a season 4. Here’s how you can help #SaveShadowhunters!
I will be the first to admit that I never expected to be writing this article, not because I didn’t think the ShadowFam could reach 8 million tweets and coordinate a fundraiser in less than a week (I know they can), but because this season 4 cancellation of Shadowhunters was so incredibly unexpected. Did I listen to Ruelle on my drive home from work after I got the cancellation news? Yes. Did I get emotional when “This Is The Hunt” coincidentally played first after I switched Spotify to shuffle play? Also yes.
Because of the schedule for seasons 1 and 2, it seemed likely that season 3 would follow suit and premiere in early 2018, but when a date in late spring was announced at NYCC last year, it took fans by surprise. With season 3B originally scheduled for August (a date that is also a few months later than when 2B aired last year), this new jump all the way to spring 2019 feels like a slap in the face to many fans. It’s understandable that the network and the show’s creators would want to keep those final 2 extra episodes in succession with the rest of 3B, but it’s now possible that season 3 will be stretched out longer than an entire year. Not to mention, this Halloween special we heard about will likely also air in the spring.
We do have reasons to be grateful though. Unlike other shows who were canceled this year without a conclusion to the story, Shadowhunters will have another 3-4 weeks of filming for the additional, final two episodes, and we still have 12 new episodes to celebrate when they (finally) air next spring. But for hundreds of thousands of fans, a 12-episode season 3B as the series finale is just not acceptable, and they’ve united as a community worldwide to make their voice heard.
The strategy behind #SaveShadowhunters
And they’re not just tweeting and commenting; they’ve constructed a full-out website where they’ve compiled strategies and information about how to participate in the fight on and off social media for a renewal. In addition to the website, fans have also put together a 4-page Google doc with contacts, links, comment scripts and email templates for fans to use who are interested in contacting networks directly, along with a separate guide for Twitter strategy.
The hashtag #SaveShadowhunters trended in the #1 spot worldwide for hours following the cancellation news, continuing to rank worldwide over the next several days. Using Hashtracking, we’ve looked into just how many tweets have been posted so far from five of the most popular hashtags being used by the fandom and the totals surpass 8 million (as of Sunday, June 10).
#SaveShadowhunters is the most popular tag by far, with over 4.7 million tweets, and #PickUpShadowhunters follows with over 2.3 million. Twitter accounts dedicated specifically to the show have also united to create planned tweet sessions using alternative tags. So far, #NotOurLastHunt and #SaveTheShadowWorld are both close to .5 million tweets each, and #RenewShadowhunters also has a quarter of a million tweets.

The Shadowhunters cast continues to fight and participate in the #SaveShadowhunters hashtag as well, and while I could post every single one of them here, it seems much more efficient and impactful to post this incredible photo collage filled with (just a portion of) the tweets from current and former cast members.
Focusing energy into The Trevor Project campaign
A Change.org petition was quickly started to gather signatures, and by the time this article is live on our site, it may have crossed 100,000 names. Wanting to do something impactful with the energy and passion from the surge of fans who took to social media out of anger for the shows’ cancellation, a donation page for The Trevor Project was also created and is being managed by a Shadowhunters entertainment news site called Basic Shadowhunters Stuff. As of Sunday, June 10, over $5,550 had been raised.
Brie Burnham of Basic Shadowhunters Stuff said that while their site wasn’t the first to come up with the idea of donating to The Trevor Project, they saw that many fans were starting to donate to the organization in honor of Shadowhunters. “We sort of realized that it would be more useful to have everyone giving in one place, so we consolidated it,” Burnham said.
“There was a lot of anger and frustration and hopelessness going around, and some fans started talking about how it would be useful to channel that anger into putting something good into the world, both to raise awareness and also showcase the generosity of the Shadowhunters fandom,” she explained. “We are passionate, dedicated, and worldwide and we wanted to show off the power of our fandom to do good.”
Contribute to the growing campaign HERE!
Fans who are donating to The Trevor Project, a campaign which has now been translated into multiple languages by Shadowhunters fans around the world, are also able to write a comment and share their experience as being part of the Shadowhunters fandom. After scrolling through just a few dozen posts, it’s very clear that the community that was created and developed around this fantasy series was about so much more than the Shadow World alone.
Showrunner Todd Slavkin has showed support for the fundraiser, but Freeform has been silent so far. Several fans reported that after they had posted the donation link on the official Shadowhunters Facebook page, that the links were later deleted. However, It’s unclear whether someone who runs the account is actually deleting the posts, or if Facebook is filtering them out as spam links without Freeform’s knowledge. Regardless, we hope that Freeform will help support the fundraising campaign by sharing the donation site on their official social media pages soon.
Have you participated in #SaveShadowhunters, signed the Change.org petition, and donated to The Trevor Project yet? What are you waiting for? Go show your support for this show and its inclusive, international community!

The day Young Living broke my heart…
As I explain my story below, I urge you to keep an open mind and look at all the facts and ask questions. If someone tells you to pay no attention to this and just move on…ask yourself why they are doing this and what they have to gain from keeping you in the dark.
Thursday February 25th 2016 was the day this all started. As an Aromatherapy student, I spend a lot of time in various aromatherapy/essential oil Facebook groups. It was late afternoon this particular Thursday that I came across a post in one of the groups that contained GC/MS test results of a Cinnamon Bark essential oil sample. The sample was found be adulterated with synthetics. This bit of info did not surprise me, as Essential Oil adulteration runs rampant in the fragrance industry. What did surprise me, was the very strong insinuation that this particular sample was of Young Living’s cinnamon bark, followed later by pictures of the actual bottle clearly showing the Young Living label. Immediately I sent a copy of the test report, screenshot of the post and pictures of the unopened bottle to Young Living’s product support  as I simply refused to believe any possibility that this could be true.
The following day (Friday February 26th 2016) I received what appeared to be a fairly standard/generic form response from YL Product Support more or less telling me not to worry and called the whole ordeal a smear campaign by a competitor.
Speculation and accusations began running rampant in the Facebook groups and Young Living’s name continued to be dragged through the “mud” so to speak. Wanting to provide some kind of proof to my family, clients, and friends that Young Living products were pure, I decided to have an oil tested, at my expense. Why you ask? Well back in 2015 I had e-mailed YL Product Support asking why they do not release or provide GC/MS testing reports. In their reply they advised me that if I wanted documentation on the purity of the oils, I was welcome to submit them for testing through an independent lab of my choice.
I contacted a testing laboratory located in Quebec, Canada that specialized in essential oils and natural health products called  Phytochemiato obtain pricing and shipping information. To avoid any claims of tampering or sabotage, I logged into my Young Living Virtual Office and placed an order for a bottle of Cinnamon Bark. I had the shipping information changed to the laboratory in Quebec so that Young Living would ship the oil directly to them from the warehouse and there could be no claims of tampering with bottle caps, etc.
On March 3rd 2016 I received notice from the Lab that they received my sample of Cinnamon Bark that I had Young Living send to them [receipt acknowledgement is available below] and was advised that I would have the results within 2 weeks time.
March 18th I received an email from the lab again containing the GC/MS report from my sample I had tested. Nervously, I opened the attachment and scrolled to the bottom “conclusion” section….”The sample has been adulterated with synthetic cinnamaldehyde, indicated by the presence of phenylpentadienal isomers. Synthetic linalool may also have been added.”
Tears filled my eyes as the reality of the situation began to sink in. My close family used Cinnamon Bark internally, not to mention the sheer volume of Thieves products that contained Cinnamon. I attempted some conversations with my “uplines” about the issue but merely got “don’t worry” and “I’ve used the products for years and I’m fine!”. Quickly realizing that I would not get the answers I wanted from them and not knowing where else to turn, I sent an e-mail to Young Living’s Chief Operating Officer, Jared Turner and included a copy of the test report. Hope and faith briefly returned when I received a reply from Jared, thanking me for bringing the issue to his attention and promising me a reply. He even Cc’d the entire analytical team and asked them to answer my questions I had.
As of the date I write this (April 28th 2016), I still have received no reply or answers to my questions from Jared, the analytical team, or anyone at corporate.
In the midst of ordering my sample to be sent to the lab for testing, I was contacted by a group of three other Young Living distributors unrelated to my sponsorship line. They were greatly concerned with the possible adulteration and lack of answers/information they were receiving from their uplines as well. One of them had an unopened bottle of Cinnamon Bark with the same lot # originally tested and posted about back on February 25th. They knew I was having a sample tested and wanted to know how they could go about getting their bottle tested, as well as another bottle of a different lot #, and a bottle of Thieves blend. They sent their samples off to the lab and roughly 2 weeks later received their results. All three bottles were adulterated.
Because they did not have Young Living send the order direct to the lab, they were immediately chastised by fellow YL distributors making claims they had tampered with the bottles themselves, however the fact remained that my test had a clean chain of custody and YL still was not addressing the results.
Over the course of the next several weeks, YL issued several “statements” (all via Diamond level leaders or above) denying the adulteration and referring to it as a smear campaign. [copy of their statements can be found below].
My plea’s to Jared and YL corporate continued to be ignored. At this point in time I decided to collaborate with the group of three other distributors that had their samples sent in, and together we created a change.org petition [found HERE] demanding that YL address our questions, specifically the ones we had following their last statement. At almost 1300 signatures, the distributor that created the petition account (Betty), was contacted via phone from Jared Turner. I was not on the call so I won’t speak for what happened as it would merely be hearsay, but they did request that Betty take down the petition because they were going to be issuing another statement. After waiting for their statement (which didn’t come until the next day), we were left with continued unanswered questions and determined the petition could not be taken down until they were addressed. Jared sent Betty a text message saying he noticed the petition was still up. When Betty replied that there were continued unanswered questions and that it might be best for the 4 of us to connect via a group e-mail, the friendly “we’re here to help” attitude immediately changed. We contacted Andrea Neipp as requested- twice. To this date (April 28th), we have not received any reply from Andrea.
It has become quite clear from the actions of Young Living corporate and Diamond and above level “leaders” that this issue will not be further addressed. As a low ranking distributor, I am not valuable in their eyes and if I stop ordering Young Living products, it’s no “skin off their backs” as the saying goes. As an advocate for health and high quality products, a consumer, and a Young Living member, I refused to sit down and sweep this all under the rug. I share my story in hopes that others will spread the word and that Young Living will be held accountable to their “seed to seal” promise and guarantee. Had they handled this in a more professional manner, followed-up, etc. I may have been able to overlook this as a quality control issue that “slipped through the cracks”, but the despicable behavior demonstrated by fellow distributors and corporate means I simply can not.
Please share this story so that others may learn the truth and so they can make informed decisions for them and their families going forward. I will continue to update this page if/when new developments arise. I welcome your questions and comments and will try and answer as many as I can.
It is with a very heavy heart and great sadness that I write this post. My decision to share my story with you has not come lightly. It comes after much research, soul searching, and great personal and financial sacrifice. You see, I had nothing to lose and everything to gain by keeping quiet about this and continuing to grow my team and build my business, but as the saying goes “A lie doesn’t become truth, wrong doesn’t become right and evil doesn’t become good, just because it is accepted by a majority.”
