~~~
Rowan didn’t really enjoy dressing up, could go his entire life without attending another large, social gathering. And yet… he had let Aelin convince him to take her to a wedding.
He had forced himself into his nicest suit because Aelin told him to. He sensed that this was something he didn’t want to argue with her about, so he did it with minimal complaint. He figured that it wouldn’t be that bad in the grand scheme of things, and the open bar was certainly a perk.
Not to mention, Aedion would be there well. In fact, Rowan was on his way to his coworkers apartment where he would meet up with the rest of them before heading to the wedding. Apparently, Aedion got roped in as well. His and Aelin’s family were old friends with the groom’s family.
Rowan checked his watch as he climbed the stairs, ensuring he wasn’t late lest he give Aelin a reason to be cross with him. It seemed he was making good time.
Rowan knocked politely, the door swinging open quickly and revealing a surprisingly well-dressed Aedion, who was nursing a bottle of beer.
“Hey man,” he said, clasping forearms with Rowan. “How’re you doing? You want a beer?”
“Yeah, that would be great.”
Rowan stepped into the apartment, lingering in the living room as Aedion slipped into the kitchen. The room was decorated simply, but it was clean. His eyes caught on a few old photographs, picturing what must have been a young Aedion and Aelin together, smiling smiles too large for their little faces.
Aedion reappeared, handing him the beer.
“I can’t believe Aelin conned you into this,” Aedion commented, leaning against the back of the couch. “But, I gotta say, I’m glad you’re coming.”
“Is the company there gonna be that bad?”
“Yes. But I also know Aelin’s doing this to piss off her ex. And I was never a big fan of him. I think it’s going to be funny.” Aedion finished off his beer, glancing at the clock mounted on the wall with a sigh. “Those girls are gonna make us late. Lys! Are you nearly done?”
“You can’t rush perfection!” Lysandra’s voice called from upstairs.
Aedion shook his head fondly with a playful chuckle, clearly used to waiting on the girls.
They chatted casually until Rowan was finished with his beer. It was then that a door opened from upstairs, followed by feminine laughter and the clicking of heels.
Lysandra descended first, looking perfectly elegant in an emerald slip dress that brought out the green in her eyes. She tossed her raven hair over her shoulder as she caught Aedion’s eye, sending him a bright and loving smile.
Rowan barely heard the two of them complimenting one another, all thoughts flying from his head at the sight of the woman walking down the stairs.
Aelin looked stunning, though Rowan knew stunning wasn’t really strong enough of a word to describe her in this instance.
She wore a golden silk dress that hit just above the knee. The conservativeness of the length was offset by the way it hugged each and every curve, as if it had been sewn on to her body specifically. Thin straps held it over her shoulders, leaving her toned arms bare. Aelin’s hair had been straightened and left hanging freely in a gleaming sheet down her back. It was then that Rowan realized how rarely he got to see her with her hair down. When Aelin was working or working out, it was always tossed up in a bun or a ponytail. It suited her. She wore a necklace, and it wasn’t until she got closer that Rowan was able to see that the pendant was a golden sword. It was strangely fitting.
She was slipping something into her clutch, barely even noticing Rowan until she nearly walked through him. Her eyes snapped up, the stunning turquoise color brought out by her eyeshadow look. Her gaze traveled from his feet to the top of his head, assessing and nothing more.
“You clean up better than I expected,” Aelin said simply.
Rowan wished he had something witty up his sleeve, but seeing Aelin in that dress had left his mind in shambles. He was only able to grind out a curt, “Thanks.”
She held his gaze for a moment longer, leaving Rowan to wonder what was going through her head. Before he had much more time to ponder it, she swept away, grabbing a jacket by the door.
“So, is everyone ready?” she asked.
“In case you didn’t notice,” Aedion drawled. “We were all waiting for you two.”
Aelin ignored the tiny quip, smoothing down the sides of her dress. “Well then, let's get going. We have a wedding to attend.”
The ride to the venue was uneventful. Aelin sat in the back besides Rowan while Aedion drove them all. The car was filled with friendly chatter back and forth, pop music droning on in the background.
Aelin tried to stop herself from sending sly glances towards Rowan. He looked good tonight. Really good. Rowan was hot on a day to day basis, something that not even his drab PT uniform could hide. But tonight, all cleaned up and dressed in something nice, Rowan was unfairly handsome.
Her only solace was knowing that he was checking her out too. Aelin knew she looked amazing tonight. Part of it was for herself, and she wasn’t ashamed to admit that part of it was to gain Rowan’s attention. She had been successful in that endeavor.
Aelin wasn’t stupid. She knew Rowan found her attractive just as Rowan knew she found him attractive. They had been ready to go out and probably bang until they realized that they were coworkers. Aelin had agreed to keep it professional, but she would be lying if she said that she didn’t want something more with him.
Soon enough, Aedion was parking the car outside the venue. They filed out, Aelin smoothing and straightening her dress, a sort of heaviness in her gut as she looked towards where the ceremony would be held. Although she was excited to see Dorian, and happy that he had found love, she was less than excited about seeing Chaol again.
The scent of pine and snow surrounded her just as Rowan came up to her side.
“You ready?” Aelin asked him, to which he gave a stiff nod. “Good. Don’t embarrass me.”
Rowan scowled, but held out his arm for her regardless. Aelin took it, stepping close to his side, trying to ignore how nice the warmth of his body felt against her own.
It was time to get this over with.
The ceremony was simple yet beautiful. Any idiot could see how in love Dorian and Sorscha were with one another. Aelin had only met the bride on a few occasions, but she liked her. Sorscha looked stunning in a flowy gown that made her brown skin glow.
Aelin pointedly ignored Chaol even though he stood right by Dorian the entire time. Instead, she looked at the maid of honor, Yrene, who her ex was now dating. Through talking to Dorian, Aelin had learned that Chaol and Yrene had met through Sorscha. Apparently, the two women worked at the same hospital and were close friends.
Yrene was a beautiful woman with kind eyes. Aelin knew in her gut that she would like her once they got to talking. Perhaps they would find time to chat through the night.
The ceremony ended with a sweet kiss and the happy couple going off to take some photographs. For the guests, it was time to cocktail.
Rowan, at least, was playing the part of a boyfriend well. Without complaint, surprisingly. He held her hand as they went towards where cocktail hour was being held, a steady presence. He even chatted with her, asking her questions about how she knew Dorian. When she whispered snide comments about other guests, he even laughed a few times. It was… nice, she supposed. She was having a good time with him.
Lysandra and Aedion were swept up by Dorian’s parents, leaving Aelin and Rowan by themselves.
The more they drank, the more comfortable they became. It was easier to laugh, easier to forget why they had put distance between them to begin with. They had been pretty good at avoiding conversation with others to begin with, but Aelin knew it was only a matter of time before they crossed paths with someone.
“So what do we say if someone asks how we met?” Rowan asked as they grabbed another drink from the bar.
“We tell them the truth,” Aelin deadpanned. “Sexting on tinder.”
Rowan choked on his whiskey. “We cannot say that.”
“Fine. We can be boring and say we met at work.”
Rowan laughed, and Aelin realized how much she loved the sound. She liked how it softened his normally stony face, made him appear younger, lighter. She could get used to seeing him like this.
They turned from the bar, taking a few steps into the crowd, only to come face to face with the reason Aelin had dragged Rowan along to begin with.
“Aelin,” Chaol Westfall greeted, offering a shaking and awkward smile. “Hi.”
The smile that had been painted on Aelin’s face faltered slightly. She had been enjoying her time with Rowan so much she had forgotten why she had wanted him by her side to begin with.
“Chaol,” Aelin said, smiling tightly. “It’s good to see you again.”
Yrene was on his arm, looking stunning in a deep purple dress, curly hair loose and voluminous. Her honey eyes were bright and kind as she smiled at Aelin.
“You too,” Chaol said, before motioning towards the woman beside him. “This is Yrene. My girlfriend.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Yrene greeted, reaching out and shaking her hand. “I love your dress.”
“Oh, thank you! I’ve been looking at your shoes all night.” Aelin put a hand on Rowan’s shoulder, pressing herself to his side. “This is Rowan.”
Aelin watched carefully as they all shook hands and greeted one another, carefully studying facial expressions and body language. She had wondered if this would be awkward and tense but… it was normal.
Aelin and Chaol had ended on terrible terms, treating one another like actual shit. She remembered the insults thrown, the glares when they happened to be in the same room. But maybe… maybe they had gotten better. Maybe some time and distance had eased away the worst of the anger and toxicity. She didn’t look at Chaol and feel bad anymore she felt… nothing.
But she could tell that Chaol had Yrene and he cared very much about her.
And Aelin had…
Well, she didn’t really have anyone but…
She looked to Rowan, and for once didn’t try to avoid the longing that swelled in her chest. She wished she had him.
Aelin sat down at her table, sipping at a glass of champagne and watching the people on the dancefloor sway slowly to the soft music playing.
The rest of the evening had gone by smoothly. Aelin enjoyed the time she spent with her friends, getting to see Dorian again even though she couldn’t steal much of his time. All and all, it had been fun.
The night was winding down, people filtering out slowly, but there were still those who lingered for a few more dances. Dorian danced with his new wife, both looking at one another with so much love Aelin could feel it from where she sat. Lysandra smiled and laughed and Aedion twirled her around. Chaol held Yrene to his chest as they swayed slowly, lost in their own world.
Aelin sighed and rested her chin on her palm, watching them all move.
There was the sound of footfalls coming her way, stealing her attention from the dance floor. She looked up and found Rowan standing before her, looking to where her gaze was just focused but glancing back at her with a raised brow.
“Do you want to dance?”
Aelin blinked in surprise, sure she had heard him incorrectly. Rowan didn’t seem like the type of man who enjoyed dancing but… the offer hung there.
“You don’t have to,” Aelin said softly. “You did your part.”
“I can tell you want to dance. So, let’s dance. It’s almost time to go anyway.”
Aelin hesitated a beat, studying Rowan’s expression carefully. She didn’t want him to do anything he was uncomfortable with, yet his face showed nothing but sincerity. Rowan held out a hand towards her, brow raised as if to say Well? Are you coming?
A hesitant smile found its way onto Aelin’s face, but she accepted his hand, letting him guide her to her feet. Rowan led her to the center of the dance floor, placing a polite hand on her hip, the other clutching her own. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and Aelin could have sworn time stopped. Maybe she had imagined it, but she was almost sure she saw a flash of the same longing she felt in his eyes.
They began to sway slowly to the music. It was a little awkward at first, but as time passed and the notes rang out, the tension lessened. They moved closer and closer to one another, until to a stranger they might have actually appeared to be a regular couple. It felt more natural than Aelin expected it to.
As the songs played, they kept sending one another shy smiles. Aelin wasn’t sure at what point she rested her head against Rowan’s chest as they danced, but she never wanted that moment to end.
It was a shame that the reception was inching to a close, that the night of being close to Rowan would end. It was a shame that, come the morning, they would go back to being strangers once more.
But, for tonight, Aelin was content to pretend.
Meet the Parents (Joe Mazzello Imagine)
Pairing: Joe Mazzello x Reader
Summary: Joe is coming home with you to meet your parents for the first time. And then you remembered the Jurassic Park poster on your wall...
Word count: 1.4K
Warnings: None, just lots of fluff!
Requested: Nope! I had this idea awhile ago and wanted to share it with y’all 🥰
Tumblr media
You were nervous. Really nervous. So nervous that you couldn’t stop tapping your foot on the plane, and you thought your boyfriend might actually cut it off of you. But you couldn’t help it, taking a boyfriend home to meet the parents for the first time was no easy task. Your family had a tendency to go a little overboard when they met someone new.
They also loved to tell embarrassing stories about you, and who knows what else. Honestly that’s what made you the most nervous. And you really loved Joe, so you really wanted your family to like him like you did.
“Babe you seriously need to relax.” He says to you halfway through the flight.
“I can’t relax. I’m too nervous to relax.” Your foot kept tapping away.
“It’s going to be fine, I promise. I wouldn’t make a promise I couldn’t keep.” You knew he was right.
“I hope so. My parents can be weird though.”
“Trust me, I’ve met my fair share of weird. You’ve met me right?” You couldn’t help but laugh. And then you remembered your Jurassic Park poster hanging in your bedroom. It had been there since you were 5, and since you’d moved out your parents had done little to change your room. They wanted it to be how you remembered, which brought you comfort sometimes.
Except now you were taking home your boyfriend who was IN that movie to your childhood home with his movie poster on your wall. That was going to be a fun conversation, you thought. You just smiled at Joe and pushed the thought from your mind. Impressing your family was a little more important. BUT THE POSTER, you thought again.
You knew it wouldn’t get any better if you didn’t relax, and put your head on Joe’s shoulder to sleep for the rest of the flight. A nap could cure all woes, is what Joe always said.
Landing and getting to baggage claim were the easy part. Your parents would be waiting to pick you up when you got there. Your heart was practically beating out of its chest and you looked down to see Joe squeezing your hand.
“You ready for this?” You asked as you stepped on the escalator towards baggage claim.
“I was born ready.” He squeezes your hand one more time, just to make sure. When you get to the bottom your parents are there waiting for you with a sign that says “WELCOME HOME Y/N AND JOE!” Like they had known Joe their entire lives. A huge smile broke out across your face.
“Y/N baby girl! It’s so good to see you!” Both of your parents wrapped you in a hug so tight you thought you could burst, but you didn’t mind.
“Mom, Dad, this is Joe.” Your smile was brighter than the sun.
“Hi Mr. and Mrs. Y/L/N, I’m Joe.” And he reaches his hand out for a handshake. But instead, your parents pull him in for a hug too.
“Y/N has told us so much about you Joe, you’re already part of the family.” You saw the nervousness melt off of Joe’s frame, and that’s when you knew everything would be fine. Unless your Dad started telling an embarrassing story, then that would be another case entirely.
You spent the car ride home with your parents asking Joe questions. They wanted to know about where he grew up, his family, how he got into acting, etc. Joe happily told them everything they wanted to know, and it made you so happy that they were getting along so well.
When you got home, your dog came bounding out the front door as if on cue. You hadn’t been able to take them when you moved across the country, so your parents took them. It felt more like home every second you were there, and you were glad Joe was getting to experience that.
“Dad can take your bags upstairs, if you guys would wanna help with dinner?” Your mom suggested. You looked at Joe, who nodded in agreement.
“What are we making tonight?” Joe asked.
“Y/N’s favorite. Pasta and homemade sauce, from scratch.” That was your favorite but your mom surprised you with it. Today was getting better and better.
“Sounds delicious! I know I’ll love anything Y/N does.”
Your mom started showing Joe around the kitchen and telling him where various utensils were. While you did the simple task of boiling the pasta, you watched as your mom taught Joe how to make your special homemade sauce. It was an old family recipe you’d learned when you were little. Every time Joe learned something new you could see his face light up, and it was like you were a little kid all over again.
“Why don’t you try it?” Your mom held the spoon up to Joe’s mouth for him to taste.
“Wow that’s amazing! Y/N I can’t believe you’ve been hiding this from me babe!”
“I didn’t know you’d like it!” You tried to defend yourself, but you all just laughed instead. Meanwhile, the thought of Joe soon discovering your Jurassic Park poster crossed your mind again. If you had time to go take it down and hide it, you would.
When dinner was ready, your mom called your dad and sister into the room so everyone could eat. Your sister gave you a thumbs up from behind Joe as if to signal her approval.
“He’s cute!” She whispered.
“I know!”
Your sister did just as your parents did, asking Joe question after question. Joe didn’t seem to mind at all.
“So how did you win my sister over Joe?”
“Well, she was on set doing my makeup every day. I like to think I won her over with my charm, but in reality I think it was the perm.” You laughed.
“It was definitely the perm, lemme tell you.” And now your whole family couldn’t stop laughing.
“I DIDN’T KNOW IT STOOD FOR PERMANENT!” Joe also tried to defend himself.
“Joe I literally told you as I was doing it what it stood for. Were you not listening?”
“.... Maybe.”
“If you weren’t listening, then what were you doing?”
“Looking at your pretty face.” You couldn’t help but blush. You even heard your parents go “awwww”. You’d never known that, you’d always thought Joe had been listening.
“Okay Joe, you get to stay.” Your sister has officially given her approval. So far no embarrassing stories, but there was still time. When you started to clean up dinner, you slipped out and made your way upstairs to your room. You had plenty of time to get the poster down.
“Y/N! Where did you go?” Joe yelled from downstairs.
SHIT.
“She’s probably up in her room, I’ll show you where it is.” You heard your Mom say. Now you had absolutely no time to take the poster down.
“Oh there you are!” Joe opened the door and saw you standing right in front of your Jurassic Park poster.
“No joe don’t come in here!”
“Babe, is that a Jurassic Park poster?!” He smiled.
“Maybe. It was my favorite movie when I was younger. I wanted to be an archeologist.” You explained. And it was true.
“Are you embarrassed?” He asked, and sat down next to you on your bed.
“I didn’t want you to think I was dating you because of it ya know?” This time he smiled even more. He lifted your chin up towards him so you’d look at him.
“Babe. I love that you have that poster. Although, I’m a little disappointed you didn’t become an archeologist.” You laughed.
“If I had I may never have met you.”
“And that’s why I’m glad you didn’t silly goose.” You laid down with Joe on your bed and cuddled for awhile. He told you stories about filming the movie, and your kid self was absolutely living. A little while later, your mom came upstairs and offered dessert.
“Y/N and Joe, do you want some- oh!”
“He saw the poster Mom.” You explained and she smirked. You knew that look on her face when you saw it. She’d already knew it was going to happen.
“I just think this means you two were meant to be. The universe works in mysterious ways.” And she left to go back downstairs.
Maybe your mom was right, the poster was a good thing. In the end you had the man of your dreams, a great family, and your Jurassic Park poster could stay right where it was. Life was pretty dang good.
Falling Away With You- Ch.7.5
Chapter seven: Family Dinner: Part two
“What did you order?”
Jakub was wide-eyed as my massive dish was placed in front of me.
“Heaven, I ordered heaven in the form of pasta”
  I deadpanned as he continued to gawk at my meal, a combination of pasta, three different types of meat and a delicious red sauce mixed with ricotta cheese. The sauce reminded me of my favorite pasta dish my grandmother makes called, “messy pasta” where she mixed her red sauce with ricotta creating the most incredible taste.
“She will eat that for a week”
David stated reaching his fork into my dish snagging a piece of meatball as I shot him a look to kill.
“What can I say? Im not a cheap date”
  I shrugged picking up my martini taking a long sip. Jakub laughed and David just nodded with a smile, knowing the truth in my words.
  I sat back watching the two brothers catch up and tell stories about when they were younger was great and seeing how happy David was to have Jakub here was absolutely everything. Then there was how David was interacting with me that had me completely caught up in the night. He was constantly touching me throughout the night, whether it was an arm around my shoulders or his hand on my thigh and I was loving every second. Any time I was in a conversation with Jakub he would watch me with a small smile on his lips and a look of admiration in his eyes. His ever-present happy demeanor was still there, however there was more to it tonight as he watched two people he cared for bonding. It was the perfect night.
“Im so full” I groaned as we made our way into David’s building.
“I can’t believe how much you ate” David exclaimed wrapping his arm around my shoulders pulling me close.
“I legit couldn’t stop. It was addicting”
Jakub laughed from beside me as we walked into the elevator.
“You are something special Ash, and I mean that in the best way possibly” Jakub smiled with a light chuckle.
“Thanks Jake, you’re quickly becoming my favorite pasta” I quipped giving him a wink while David scoffed from beside me.
“He could never replace me”
  David slid his hand up and down my arm bringing up goosebumps on the skin under my shirt.
“We shall see”
  I retorted as the elevator doors opened and I stepped out from David’s grasp heading towards his door.
“You won’t be saying that in a few minutes”
  David’s confident whisper in my ear sent a shiver down my spine as I fumbled with my keys attempting to open the door.
“Let me do that babe”
  His voice was even as he smirked down at me reveling in the effect he had on me. He took the keys from my hands and unlocked the door placing a hand on my lower back ushering me inside.
“Well, dinner was great. Glad we all got to catch up, but Jakub should probably get some rest, im sure you’re jetlagged”
  David spoke turning towards Jakub flashing him a look I couldn’t see but led Jakub to smirk as he nodded.
“Oh yeah that jet lag is killing me, you two have a good night. Ash I hope to see you after the trip.”
  Jakub tried to hide the knowing glance on his lips but was failing miserably. Subtly was not one of David’s strong suits either.
“You definitely will, have a great time”
  He smiled and said goodnight to us both then headed off to the guest room on the first floor, and I was currently very thankful that he picked that room instead of one upstairs.
“You upstairs” David demanded directing me towards the staircase.
  I let out a soft giggle as I took the stairs two at a time hearing David’s footsteps close behind. I heard David close the door behind me while I bent down to take my shoes off. I felt his eyes on me and I slowed my progress knowing he was enjoying his view. Moments later his hands were on my hips as I righted myself while he moved one hand from my hips snaking it around my waist pulling my flush against his chest letting me feel him.
  I grinded back against him smirking to myself as he groaned in pleasure. His free hand came up to my neck pushing my hair to one side before his lips began teasing the skin below my ear sending goosebumps down my body. I let my head fall back against his chestas I moanedout his name promptly ending the teasing as he spun me around crashing his lips against mine in a fevered kiss.
“You can’t moan like that krásná”
  He all but growled looking down at me with lust filled eyes. I smirked back pulling away from our embrace shedding my vest followed by my sweater tossing them aside while he watched me. I hooked my thumbs into the band of my leggings shimmying out of them leaving me in only my underwear.
“You just gonna watch or am I doing this by myself?”
I teased running a hand down my stomach sliding it under my panties.
“Fuck….” His voice was strained as he reached out grabbing my wrist to stop my progress.
“That’s my job”
  His voice was firm and I stilled my hand allowing him to pull it back, placing it on his chest while I tugged at the hem of his shirt needing him to be less clothed. He took the hint reaching a hand behind his head pulling the shirt off in one swift movement. I stepped back admiring his bare chest and the tattoos that ran down his right arm. I reached out hooking my fingers into the loops of his jeans pulling him closer to undo the button pushing them down his hips letting him kick them off. I trailed my hands from his boxers up his chest feeling the muscles constrict under my touch before slowly running them down each arm. He reached out and grabbed my wrists to stop me backing me up against the bed holding onto each wrist as he eased me down. He held himself above me placing a hand on my face letting his index finger trace down my cheek.
  The raw emotion in his eyes nearly took my breath away and I felt those three words on the tip of my tongue as my mouth open to speak but I shook out of my lust-filled haze biting down on my cheek before I said something I would regret.
“You ok?”
“Of course, I…just wanted to thank you for tonight”
“I wouldn’t miss a chance to celebrate you”
 His words warmed me and I quickly pulled his lips to mine.
**
“You had good time tonight, yeah?”
 His question stopped my finger as I lazily traced the roses on his forearm while we laid together watching The Office. I pulled my head from his chest connecting with his eyes and smiled.
“Of course I did. I love spending time with you and Jakub.” His smile matched mine warming my body.
“I love that you two get along. Means a lot to me”
  We were quickly pulled from our moment when I heard my phone buzz from inside my bag on the floor. It was then that I realized I left phone here when we went to dinner. David’s hold around me tightened as I attempted to get up.
“Baby, I need my phone”
  I laughed pulling my head off his chest to look at him. He groaned but loosened his grip as I rolled off the bed reaching for the bag in the corner. I took this time to slip into my underwear and one of David’s t-shirt’s before pulling my phone from the bag. When I clicked the screen I was instantly brought back to reality as I saw a missed text from Evan Matthews. I had been so consumed with David that I almost forgot about tomorrow’s date with Evan. But seeing his text brought back all the thoughts I had the previous night.
Evan Matthews: Congrats on turning in your paper! We still on for tomorrow night?
Me: Thank you. Definitely, im looking forward to it.
  I sent my reply and looked back at David who was watching me from the bed and a sudden guilt washed over me, but I couldn’t figure out which guy I felt the guilt towards.
((Underswap story anyone??))
I'm seventeen living on the surface now for eleven years, found and currently dating the human girl of my dreams, on the track and free-style dance teams at school with an amazing Dad and magnificent Uncle along with so many friends and people I've considered family all my life. I'm happy and feeling pretty great about it all but recently I've felt this confused sensation about something; it's been nagging away at my soul for some months now even. Hannah, my beautiful and graciously kind girlfriend noticed it almost immediately asking about it now and then but how could I give her a answer if I wasn't even sure what the thing was that needed asked about. I was wanting answers just as much as she did that was for sure. And for once it felt like something I couldn't or more like wouldn't talk to anyone about which was defiantly out if character for me. I considered myself an open book about anything always leaning heavily on my Dad when something stressful came onto me. So I was kinda confused on why this was so different feeling.
I didn't want to push it onto anyone; not family or friends and that really sucked feeling like a cracked bottle just draining little by little each day so after months like this...I felt almost empty. And lost huddled in a corner in my mind with my own annoying emotions. Is this what the early stages of depression felt like? Dad was open about his own depression...was it really okay to bring mine up to him?
Groaning outwardly leaning against the sink at my Aunt Muffet's bar staring at the dishes as my mind raced I had the sudden urge to go to bed soon when I got home.
"Whats wrong Deary?"
Aunt Muffy as I liked to call her walked into the kitchen from the side door seeing me right as I leaned over which was heavily frowned upon by her. She was big on posture.
"Oh! S-sorry I'm fine just tired is all. I had early track practice today before I came here."
She eyed me suspiciously folding her lower arms as she walked to me and adjusted the tie I wore. Darn this uniform she made me wear.
"Go home sweetie, I can handle things from here."
"What? But its not even my normal time yet. I still have an hour in a half."
"And I said go home, I have plenty of help for the night so listen to your auntie and go rest up."
"But-"
She covered my mouth with one word out smiling that loving smile that has always comforted me.
"Besides deary, Hannah is here to pick you up."
"S-she is!?"
The simple mention of that heavenly name sent my mood through the roof as I dried my hands off quickly to kissing Aunt Muffy's cheek and dashed out into the dining room towards my perfect flower standing by the door. Hannah only managed a few steps before I was on her with arms around her waist picking her up and spinning us around.
"Hey honey! Glad to know you missed me since leaving school just a few hours ago."
She held my cheeks so softly in her warm hands sending tingles straight through me as she kissed my nose.
"Sorry, I didn't know you were picking me up."
"Your Dad asked if I could. Apparently Blue is trying out a new recipe and he's supervising."
"Yeah that sounds about right."
Grabbing my school bag I had hanging behind the front counter after settling her back on her feet I followed right behind her out to her little blue toyota perfectly named berry-boy jumping into my rightful front seat and off to the roads ahead.
"How was work today? You've been doing part time since school started but you haven't told me much about it yet."
With her eyes on the road Hannah's voice chimed throughout the car like a choir as I began loosening my tie and un-did the top few buttons.
"Fine, I've always helped Aunt muffy ever since I was a kid in the Underground so its second nature to me. Apparently she says people like my friendly attitude. Plus I'm allowed to keep the tips I get so thats always a bonus."
"Do you think she would let me work there with you too?"
I didn't mean to chuckle but I did earning a questionable side eye.
"She wouldn't trust us together for five minutes inside her establishment. She has a no couples working together policy."
"Since when!?"
"Since we started dating."
I looked over seeing that cute little pout that broke my walls down when she was trying to get something from me but at least this time it wasn't my personal downfall.
"I kinda agree with her though, what would happen if I saw your cute butt in uniform? I would have to grab your ass all the time and that would loose me tips."
I gave a fake playful whine as the pout turned to a blush.
"Win! Oh my god shut up!"
Laughter bubbled out of an giddy fountain as she reached over to try and swat at me only for me to catch her hand and kiss it. The blush worsened in response.
"Facts are facts tulip I can't change them."
"Get out of my car you terrible flirt!"
She laughed through the statement as she pulled into the driveway throwing the car in park only to throw her signature pout my way.
"You're such a baby."
Leaning over I grabbed the back of her neck making her sqeak from the surprise before stealing her lips happy to make the pout disappear.
"I-I hate when you do that...I love you. I'll text when I'm home."
"Good girl. And I love you too."
She rolled her eyes as I stood from the car watching her go not moving till she was fully out of sight. Signing gently as I brushed my fingers agaisnt my lips smiling now having my mood lightened even more I walked inside shutting the door quietly and tried to escape to my room upstairs; it failed miserably.
"Welcome back Kiddo."
"H-hey Dad. How's dinner going?"
"Better then I thought. He's using a recipe book Asgore leant him so its going well. How was school and work?"
Seeing as hiding away in my room was destroyed I followed Dad into the living room dropping my backpack to the ground before falling into the couch cushions across from him.
"Good, track practice will be picking up alot more soon for the fall meet so I'll have it twice a week starting next week. And I got tipped by the little old couple that come in for coffee every Friday. They weren't even my table."
"Heh, they like you."
"I never knew just how cute little old couples could be."
Dad snickered at my comment folding his legs up tapping his foot agaisnt my leg.
"I saw Hannah dropped you off like I asked of her, nice move by the way on the kiss. Wish I taught ya that instead of the movies. Wins hearts everytime."
"Dad! I do not need that kind of advice from you please and thanks!"
He laughed out as my face no doubt turned shades of purple while grabbing one of the pillows chucking it right at that boney face of his. That shut him up at least but the orange glow I saw in his eye partnered with the smirk I suddenly felt like I was going to have a bad time. The pillow fight was a blur; smacks, hits and laughter echoed off the walls of the living room as we both fought in this squishy war. We had tag teamed using magic to move most of the furniture around so not to destroy anything and get yelled at by Uncle Blue at least before it got real bad.
"Give it up kiddo! You've never won a pillow fight with your old man! I'm the pillow fighting champion in this household!"
"Stop talking and watch your back!"
"Huh?"
He was confused seeing my magic come to life in my eyes only to have the biggest pillow in the living room attack him right in the back of his head and neck throwing him off his game as I came up and hit him again in his side as hard as I could. The moment I saw him off balance enough I pushed him down grabbing his arm and pinned it behind him sitting on his back to add to the winning stance.
"I got dunked on by my own kid...Im so proud."
"Dad you're a dork."
I laughed releasing his arm but stayed on his back feeling pretty happy right where I was.
"I was waaay over due for a victory."
"17 years over due for a victory."
"So you were having pillow fights with me when I was a baby? Rude."
"Absolutely, I just had to tap your head with a pillow and you'd fall over, easy win."
"Wow Dad, didn't know you'd stoop so low."
Climbing off I layed on the floor next to him also on my stomach folding my arms under my chin turning my head to look at him.
"Feeling better?"
"Huh?"
He reached over laying a warm skeletal hand ontop of my head pushing the short red locks back gently.
"You've been down in the dumps for a while kiddo, I'm your dad, you think I wouldn't notice? I gotta make sure my baby-bones stays happy ya'know."
"Oh...I mean, yeah I feel good. Thanks."
"You wanna talk about it?"
"I...don't know yet? Is that dumb? I haven't really figured out some stuff."
"Its not dumb hon, when you figure out what's going on you know I'm here."
"Yeah...thanks Dad."
He smiled satisfied with my words and just started to get up when Uncle Blue's voice rain down like thunder.
"WHAT HAPPENED IN HERE!? WHY ARE THE COUCHES MOVED!? AND PILLOWS EVERYWHERE!!??"
I couldn't stop laughing as Dad snickered reaching his hand down to pull me up as we cleaned explaining the 'tornado' that hit out of no where. Uncle Blue wouldn't believe us at all as he finished dinner while supervising the clean up at the same time. We ate at the table with the feeling of calm settling in my mind for once then I was finally given the joy of going to my room to work on homework with headphones in drowning out the real world.
I had showered kinda late, finished homework and just layed in bed texting Hannah. She was trying to trigger my sadness seeing if something said in the past was the whole reason. I just kept replying by sending her emojis with every failed attempt.
'Thanks for trying Tulip but I think Imma go chill with dad and talk with him...I think I can try and explain it now. Maybe'
'You sure?'
'Nope but he's understood my babbling for years'
I didnt wait for her response dropping the phone into the mess of sheets leaving my room traveling down the hall with soft steps to the last room knocking gently like I was scared of the door.
"Dad, you asleep?"
"Not anymore."
I giggled opening the door watching the last bit of him sitting up in bed as the sheets fell to his lap and stretched long arms above his skull.
"Whats up kiddo? You good?"
"Yeah...I just wanted to try and, talk about whats been going on?"
That perked him up instantly as he wiggled over making room for me in the bed patting the mattress as he did. Closing the door before I strolled over falling into the spot as Dad moved the blankets around covering me up and finished with wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
"Alright I'm all ears Win."
I rolled my eyes at that one for sure but bit my tongue at a comeback as I tried to explain the best I could manage.
"Its...probably weird. I think, I'm not really sure were to start. I don't think I want to be considered just a...girl anymore? I guess the best example would be if like Hannah and I went out on a date...I'd like to be seen as that protective figure, the masculine 'boyfriend' kinda girlfriend. I always feel more comfortable in that kind of situation. I would probably still put on a dress for her if she asked me though and there are times where I feel really pretty and like a actual girl. But I really like wearing the uniform at Aunt Muffy's place because I like that I look handsome and even get told that or that people think I'm a guy all together. I kinda like being seen as a guy...and a girl? Or even as neither. I'm actually happy being considered anything these days. I've started having people ask me my pronouns recently too but I don't know what to tell them so I just tell them my name. Some people at school have tried to explain some things to me but it feels weird to talk to them about it so I just shrug it off; so I've been confused for months now. It's been really tiring and kinda aggravating...I think that's it. Thats, kinda hard to say out loud for some reason."
Dad gave a tiny hum as I finished while I wiggled around to lay my head more on his shoulder as his fingers played in my hair.
"I think I get the main idea you have."
He reached for his phone keeping it out of my view as he typed while speaking.
"Im ninty-nine percent sure its this, one of my coworkers is the same way. I had a small hunch you were like them but I liked that you weren't titled. You were just my normal little Winnie in a relationship with your datemate. Monsters don't have a group like the humans do but they're called the LGBTQ+. I've been learning about them alot but...didn't want to say anything to you about it."
Dad contiuned speaking as he showed me what was pulled up on his phone; a entire website dedicated to the group.
"There are forms for all the branches of the group too."
He navigated through the webpage easily telling me he had been here often before going to a section that had all kinds of flags on it.
"Monsters don't put titles to things like humans but to them you would be considered a lesbian who is also gender fluid. Being a lesbian is the sexual orientation while being gender fluid is the identity you express."
I slowed his movements to read the passages wrote under each flag he showed me. Every word sunk in sending chills through me at finally connecting all the dots for the full picture. I felt every form of relief just flood my system as all my weight settled against Dad.
"Thats...so cool. Thats amazing. So people are like that everywhere, there's something I'm considered besides a monster human combo; I think I really like it."
Dad pushed my bangs to the side placing a skeletal kiss to my forehead.
"Sorry I shielded ya too much kiddo, I wanted ya to keep that mind set that its normal to love regardless of anything different, like your mom did. I made it seven years at least."
I smiled at the mention of being like Mom as I turned to hug him tight letting my head lean on his as the arm from around my shoulders found a spot on my back.
"Its fine Daddy...thanks for understanding the babbling."
"I've mastered that skill years ago kiddo. I'll have to get you too meet my coworker that taught me, they're really nice. They'd love to finally meet you with how much I yap on about my awesome baby-bones."
"Daaad...please don't embarrasse me at work without me there but, that sounds like a good plan to me."
We solidified it by texting his coworker staying cuddled together a little longer before I forced my legs to move kissing Dad good night and went back to my own bed feeling lighter then air with all the weight finally off.
~~~
"You already knew!?"
Hannah gave a sweet but sheepish smile as she sat at the kitchen table sipping her smoothie I made her while coming clean of the information she held.
"Im sorry honey I thought you knew too? We never talked about and I didn't mind since you were happy. I've considered myself a lesbian for years I just thought...you did too."
I whined hiding my face in cold hands listening to her explanation and assumption of my level of knowledge.
"Underground kid remember? There's still alot of stuff I don't get about humans like you do...but at least I know now."
"And I can help you learn more about the group too. As long as your Dad is okay with it?"
Dad's boney butt had been sitting on the counter top swinging a leg and sipping at his own smoothie when her question aimed at him redirected his attention to us giving a thumbs up.
"Always good to have a guide to human 101."
"Dad you're such a bone head you know that?"
He chuckled hopping off the counter taking one big step over kissing my forehead.
"Love you kiddo."
"Love ya Dad."
Leaving the kitchen with his smoothie in hand I picked up my chair moving closer to Hannah where I got comfy leaning against my fist listening to her as she went right into teacher mode.
