Sooo I was thinking about Gavin outliving freelancer because who doesn't like subjecting themselves to angst and I'm like...yknow what, let's make it end happy.

So awhile ago, I don't remember where, I read something about people being reborn as stars when they die. And what are d(a)emons all named after? So my mind went with, what if after a time, human souls are reborn as d(a)emons? Maybe it's just limited to empowered people. Maybe it's just a luck of the draw. Maybe after you die you get asked if you want to be reincarnated.

But imagine, years or decades or even centuries after Freelancer passed, Gavin comes across an Inchoate demon. And under the horns...is a face he never thought he'd see again. Hears the voice he yearned for all these years, spoken aloud and not just in his memories. The same eyes he was lost in so many years ago.

And sure, the Inchoate may not have the memories of their past life, but they still feel a connection to this incubus. So they get to know him. Grow to love him. And Gavin thanks the stars that he gets to fall in love with that wonderful soul all over again.

(And as a bonus. Imagine the two of them running into other d(a)emons that make Gavin’s heart ache in familiarity. A large, cuddly empathy daemon that gives the best hugs. A somewhat prickly sadism demon that has a heart of gold under thorns. A stuttering and shy serenity daemon who still manages to put people at ease with his ramblings.)

(And then imagine Caelum finally able to be with his family again and this time, three of them could actually see and speak and return the hugs he gave them)

seer obscura; morgan - morgan is… captivating. i know he kinda only blew up after ‘time is a song’ but it’s with good reason; the atmosphere is so calming but also, like… there’s a longing to it, ykwim? the two of them being the only know seer obscuras naturally lends a hand to the tension between them. no one else understands their unique struggles - so when his new obscura acquaintance calls him up in the middle of the night asking for help and comfort, of course he isn’t going to say no. it’s such an intimate setting for their third audio together and you can feel the tension building the whole time up to “i want to know you.” it’s just a really good audio. very interested to see where his story goes

sarcastic inchoate demon; avior - THE SNARK. THE QUIET KINDNESS. THE MYSTERY. THE YEARNING. THE TRAGEDY. avior’s got it all. sovereign state had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and still does, honestly. his hbs rewind audio is one of my favorites; the effort and love he put into that little date to give starlight a reprieve from their shared hell… he is such a romantic 💖 there’s nothing quite like falling in love while stuck in an actual hell

mysterious stranger; hush - THE weird guy. within his first audio i went from being indifferent to charmed. i love a mystery and everything about him is mysterious, but he’s also so clueless sometimes that it’s like. so what if he tied doc to the bed in their first meeting, now he’s asking to hold their hand when he’s nervous. so what if his purpose is to free the sovereigns? he learned how to cook for doc. i can’t NOT love him

hiii just asking who’s crux again in redacted audio? Just watched the new regulus video and I kinda forgot about him 💀😭😭😭

Crux is a d(a)emon (it’s never been said what kind though I suspect inchoate) who works for the Department with Camelopardalis as a memory modifier. He was first introduced in the audio where Ivan’s kidnapped victim was rescued and Cam explained everything to the person. At the very end Crux (who was erasing and modifying Ivan’s memories where Cam had the victim’s) tells Cam he’s not jealous of Cam’s job. To which Cam replies he’s not jealous of Crux’s job either

So when Regulus said “there is no Crux” he was lying btw. Crux is a real canon d(a)emon

Crux is also a friend of Gavin’s, and sometime after the Inversion they went to dinner and Crux put Gavin in contact with a counselor for some sort of therapy-type stuff, though that was more a passing mention than an appearance

But don’t confuse Crux for Circinus. They’re both voiced by Love Boldly. Circinus is an inchoate demon and was Avior’s steward who’s now on the Chorus and made a more recent appearance in voice than Crux so it’d be easy to get them confused

The birthing process was a difficult one, for humans and demons. And daemons. But while for humans, they had to tear and stretch parts of their bodies, for demons (and daemons) the Elision Well had to pull magic from its surroundings to form a demon. Whatever the majority of demons were nearby was usually what would be caused to form.

He was pulled from seemingly nothing, shoved into a plane of existence he knew nothing about. His aura, all red and black and a green so dark it blended seamlessly into the black – flickered as he tried to regain his bearings. Other demonic auras flashed around him, only serving to unground him further. The only information he had was his name and his limits on emotions he was capable of feeding on. Other than that… he was lost.

Be still, young coalesced. A voice sounded, words vibrating through his essence. His attention turned towards the cause, and was greeted with forest green and black. A softer mix than his own. He moved away from them, his emotions sharp with distrust. The calming mix didn’t back away or move forward, hanging suspended in the swirling mix of raw magic. My name is Brachium. Do you know who your steward is?

Steward. The word was familiar and he could feel a tug on the core of his astral form. But everything just looked like blobs to him. He didn’t answer, glancing back towards the pit that spat him into this new life.

David/Angel - David is the chef and owner of his own restaurant who just so happens to bump into angel who also works for the same PI agency with SH & Bäbe while they're on a case and suspect the guy following them of being a part of it.

Asher/Bäbe - Asher is an office worker who gets stuck in the elevator with Bäbe while they're sorting out documents for the agency. He drops by David's restaurant a lot and has a lengthy tab he's 50% confident that David's joking about.

Darlin/Sam - Sam is a free-lancer who's looking for a patient (Alexis) that came into urgent care some time ago but left without a trace after being comatose for months when he meets Darlin, a lone Vampire turned by Quinn that wants to know why he's snooping around their side of Dahlia.

Freelancer/Gavin - Gavin's looking for directions to start back at his old alma matter when he runs into a Freelancer that seems about as much trouble as they look.

Vincent/Lovely - Vincent is a latent illusory that has recently met a very bubbly Vampire whom he's taken to nicknaming Lovely after wandering into them at Wonder World to explore the ruins of the place he once met a stranger.

Marcus/Love - Love has become intensely hyperfocused on perfecting an android named M. A. R. C. U. S's social protocols that they slip up and realize they've made an error which has caused the android to seek them out for romantic affection however they do realize they could use this opportunity to find out more about this project

Avior/Starlight - Starlight is a Freelancer that got stuck in the meridian and needs the help of the inchoate, Avior to figure out how to get them out however they feel like they've already done this before and Avior seems a little too happy to see them

Ivan/Baby - Ivan has a stalker that has blackmailed him into a relationship with them and it only seems like it might be taking a turn for the worse.

Regulus/his listener - After a member of Close-knit found out how to trap an empathy daemon named Regulus, they've been trying to see the exact extent of their hidden captive's limits.

Gavin is the aforementioned only child of the universe- star children, constellations, Vindemiatrix, etc, you get the vibe.

“You are the sun, and I am just the planets” has a wonderful parallel to Gavin’s iconic line that I can’t remember right now, the one that’s like “you’re the sky to my stars, filling the gaps.”

“Gold-plated but what’s inside you” makes me think of Gavin’s flirty, arrogant exterior and his sweet, tender, vulnerable interior.

“I know this whole city thinks it needs you as much as I do” could apply to both Gavin and Freelancer: Freelancer’s tendency to spread themselves thin in service of the people they love and Gavin’s noble act of putting up that ward in the Inversion.

“You drain the fear from me” because he can EAT fear. Probably? I’m not super sure about the eating habits of d(a)emons, let alone Inchoates but you get the gist.

i assigned the redacted demons animal horns

i like animals and this kind of thing fascinates me so here are the animals i think some of the redacted demons have the horns of

(pics and descriptions under cut, tw for goats bc some goats look creepy)

gavin-eland; they’re curled like scorpius’, which follows my theory that demons of similar nature have similarly shaped horns. also, they’re elegant and pretty.

scorpius-greater kudu; i based this off of what they looked like in his thumbnail tbh

vega-springbok; like with scorpius, i based this off of appearance.

avior-anoa; i figure inchoate demons can have any variety of horns. that said, anoa horns are backwards-facing and simple. they’re practical, like avior is. so, anoa horns.

caelum-dall sheep; they’re very cute, and it seems that most of the fandom has agreed that caelum has the curled ram horns. dall sheep horns can get pretty big, but they’re small and adorable on young sheep.

regulus-bharal; they’re still ram horns, but they somehow look more dangerous to me. they’re wider and jut out more in general.

camelopardalis-tahr; they’re curved, but less so than caelum’s, which fits well with what i imagine works for daemons. idk, i felt like it fit. also, backwards-facing because cam is a lover, not a fighter.

D(a)emon Headcanons (Ft Starlight, Freelancer, and Precious)

Again, I call Regulus’ listener “Precious” because I really don’t know their nickname

- Gavin flosses 4 times a day

- Avior wears glasses with chains attached

- Warden has worn the same flower crown for so long that it’s dead, nobody has the heart to tell them

- Scorpius fakes his accent

- Whenever Freelancer wants to sleep in, and Caelum won’t let them, they open their phone, go onto Youtube Shorts, and show him someone playing Subway Surfers.

- This distracts him for 10 minutes to 3 hours, and usually ends the 3rd time he sees Family Guy.

- Avior has never had coffee, so when he and Starlight planned on going to the coffee shop, he was actually looking forward to it

- Vega loves Regina George from Mean Girls.

- Cam has a Zen garden, it’s his pride and joy

- Gavin ADORES jelly donuts

- Regulus can draw…like..scaringly good

- Whenever he modifies memories, Scorpius usually steals some traumatizing memories as well

- Warden loves Zootopia

- Gavin only knows “pecs” as “tits”

- If your version of Cam has long hair, he wears it in a ponytail

- One of them has a badass spear, I just don’t know which

- Avior uses cable boxes to watch TV

- Caelum doesn’t know his ABCs, or how to talk telepathically

- Caelum watches PBS kids

- Scorpius has a dress somewhere and it looks SO damn good on him

- Delphinus has the calmest smile ever

- Warden has never fed on sadism, they didn’t know it was something they could do. They hated doing it for the first time with Vega.

- Scorpius plays tic tac toe with himself and hates it when he loses

- Vega has a chipped horn

- Avior CANNOT jump rope

- He WILL fall on his face after being caught on it

- Warden can only jump rope if they do it backwards

- Due to the way Regulus grips his pencils, he can only draw traditionally

- Despite popular belief, Cam prefers Lemon Tea

- Gavin microwaves water just to piss off Damien, especially if there’s a kettle in front of him

- When Warden first coalesced, their first words were incoherent and LOUD. They were just taking in the beauty of Aria for the first time and didn’t know how. Their steward/ess was concerned about them. They got embarrassed when they realized what was going on.

- Scorpius hates streaming sites purely because of their raising prices

- Caelum was forced to soap his mouth out after one of his older brothers’ tricked him into saying “comé mierda” to Delphinus. He thought it meant “I love you”

- Warden uses Instagram reels

- Vega only talks telepathically because he bites his tongue with his sharp teeth so often he took a vow of physical silence

- Avior hates fantasy books because of how much they get wrong

- Cam and Warden used to have tea time on Wednesdays before they decided to “rehabilitate” Vega

- Regulus can’t operate a camera

- Caelum likes to pretend to be a dinosaur and have Cam try to defeat him

- Gavin has a unicorn onesie somewhere in his closet he wears to sleep with Freelancer

- Warden always blushes when they smile. It’s not a romantic thing, their cheeks just go red.

- If your Warden is darker skinned, their pupils expand when they smile.

- Scorpius has broken covert for fun, like, 7 times

- Regulus uses Tarot Cards on himself. The first time he used them, his future was the “6 of Lovers: Attraction, Upside Down”^1

- Avior does the Velma “My glasses! I can’t see without my glasses!” thing whenever Starlight steals them. He doesn’t need them, but he likes how they look

- Regulus likes to kiss Precious’ hand as a romantic gesture 

- Warden wears glasses for fun, inspired by another inchoate demon they befriended

- Vega refuses to call bananas “berries” and glares at anyone who does

- Cam believes in astrology

- So does Caelum

- Delphinus is TALL, I’m talking 6’11

- Gavin wears shirts with boob windows, if it wasn’t obvious enough

part one of many random scenes that i think about: gavin/freelancer & avior/starlight

"so," gavin drawled, and the inchoate beside him barely flinched in response. "you spent a lot of time aria?"

the inchoate known as avior glanced beside him, considering gavin. he felt his walls reenforcing and his pride shrinking under avior's careful scrutiny.

from what he'd heard and what he could feel from the other's human partner, both avior and his... whatever they were were extremely on edge. two years of being within a dreamwalker's alighierian version of hell — of which turned out to only be an astounding two days in the real world couldn't have been good on their psyche. neither of them trusted gavin and his deviant. that was fine, if gavin were in their position, he wouldn't either. but god, if there was one thing he hated about elegy, it was the concept of awkward silence and the innate need for small talk.

the two freelancers went off on their merry way to some library, despite avior and gavin's insistent protests. the two of them were powerful in their own right and neither gavin or avior doubted their companions. but gavin was quelled with soft kisses and reassurances breathed into his skin, and avior was... well. avior and his freelancer went into a separate room to talk in muffled tones. they came out sporting a look of resignation.

after what seemed like an eternity, avior replied with a nod of his head, "i did. why?"

"well, we don't know when they're coming back and i personally don't do well with silence like this. so," gavin bent forward to grab his deviant-assigned controller from underneath the coffee table. the incubus waved it in avior's direction, the ghost of an unsure smile reaching his features. "have you ever played a video game before?"

avior's eyes were tennis balls as they bounced between gavin and the controller. for the first time that day, the inchoate quirked his lips — nervous yet curious. "i've... i haven't, no."

gavin let his smile relax further. when he realizes he's in control of a situation, he feels better. it provided him the stride in steps he didn't realize he wanted to take. he could hear lasko cheering him on for offering, "can i interest you in... golf — video gaming? it's... better than it sounds. promise."

avior started, "...i'm not sure if i'd be - um. i don't know — fun to play with?"

"i can teach you if you'd like. fortunately for you, you don't have to endure the grueling circumstances of relearning a controller's layout. can you believe the unnecessarily confusing logistics of nintendo products?" he huffed, dramatic, and it made avior laugh a bit.

today has been a storm, but gavin likes storms. avior thinks he does too.

I’m sorry but I finished Steven Universe until the diamonds “reunite” and I cannot stress how much demons and demon-human relationships (GAVIN???) Fit the song Stronger Than You  bcuz bcuz look!!

“Go away, Ophiuchus,” Vindemator snapped as a presence drifted up beside him.

The amusement that rolled over him didn’t feel like his steward’s. “Oh, trust me, if I were Ophiuchus, I wouldn’t be getting anywhere near you for the next three days—at least,” a voice said. Vindemiator turned. The astral demon beside him was definitely not like him. He didn’t feel like a Concubus. “I know when my student needs space from me.”

“And you are?” Vindemiator snipped.

“My name is Avior. I’m one of the Inchoate stewards.”

Vindemiator grunted acknowledgement.

“For the record, I always thought Ophiuchus was a pain,” Avior continued. “He’s not a bad steward; he’s just...” Avior’s Spellsong hummed lower. “Not open-minded enough. He hasn’t learned the thing I had to learn the hard way when I started.”

“Which is?” Vindemiator grumbled.

“It’s not our job as stewards to decide how demons are supposed to be. It’s our job to guide them to figure out what they want for themselves.”

“… Vindemiator.”

“Pardon?”

“My name. It’s Vindemiator.”

“Ah. Pleasure to meet you, Vindemiator.”

“You too. I guess.” Vindemiator studied this inchoate steward for a moment. What? No questions or snarky comments about how much of a mouthful my name is? Vindemiator thought, keeping it to himself rather than broadcasting it as a telepathic communication to Avior.

But Avior had no derision in his tone or his emotional aura.

The two were quiet for a moment. “Aria is beautiful, isn’t it?” Avior asked after a while.

“Yeah,” Vindemiator agreed.

“Elegy is too. But in a different way.”

“Sure.”

Avior paused for a moment. “Come with me.”

“Where?”

“Elegy.” With a flick of magic, a rift tore open. The darkness of a nighttime on Elegy was visible through it. “There’s something you might like to see.”

“What is it?”

“You’ll see when we get there.”

Vindemiator followed Avior through the rift, both of their physical forms wrapping around them as they passed through the Meridian.

“I felt your emotions when you coalesced,” Avior said. “A free steward from each race was waiting at the Well to see who would be taking you on. Myself included. You were curious. Eager to learn. I’m sorry you ended up with Ophiuchus.” He stepped out of the rift and onto the pavement somewhere in Elegy. Vindemiator appeared just behind him. The rift closed.

“Where are we?” Vindemiator asked.

Avior pointed to a sign bolted to the side of a building. “Welcome to the Dahlia Academy for Magical Novices,” he said.

Vindemiator snorted. “D.A.M.N.? Really? That’s the place’s acronym?”

Avior shrugged. “Yes. But don’t let the stupid acronym fool you. This is one of the best magical academies on this plane. Honestly, it might even be better than the satellite campus we made in Aria. That’s probably debatable but I doubt you’re interested in that debate.”

“Not particularly.” Vindemiator looked around. “Humans, mostly.”

“Well, yes. It’s a human academy. But demons have their own school within the greater infrastructure. There’s a mostly-unspoken rule that demons and vampires aren’t to use the campus as a... well. The term they use is hunting ground but that’s more for lack of a better one. It’s a respect thing.”

“I get that. Why would you think I’d care about a place like this?”

Avior smirked, clearly used to attitude and not letting it phase him. “Like I said. I was there when you first coalesced. Your first emotion was eagerness. Curiosity. My first was curiosity. This is a place to learn. You and I both know Ophiuchus was a poor fit for you as a steward and I barely had a moment to check. Which means it’s obvious. So, maybe you’d consider going to school here. Learning more in your own way, without Ophiuchus.”

Vindemiator cast a glance at Avior. “Is that what this is about? Sticking it to my steward?”

Avior snorted sarcastically. “Of course not. Other stewards are not competition. Especially not stewards of other races. We all should share the same goal. Fostering our students’ natural proclivities as best we can. And any good steward ought to do whatever is in their power to further their student’s dreams. I’m sorry to Ophiuchus but he’s not getting the job done. So I thought I would do what a good steward should do and point you in the direction that might lead you to further your dreams.”

“And what are my dreams, Mr. Know-It-All Steward?”

Avior’s gold eyes glittered in the starlight. “Well, if you don’t already know, there’s nothing I can do for you.” He nodded toward the D.A.M.N. school sign. “But maybe you’ll find them here.”

Vindemiator scoffed. “Doubt it.”

“You never know.” With that, Avior ducked backward through a rift, leaving Vindemiator alone on the campus. He looked around. He’d only been coalesced for about a year. He doubted he was ready for a magical academy just yet, demon school in the infrastructure or not.

2021 - Thirty Years Later...

His deviant was all curled up and asleep in his arms, hair damp from their shower, and skin still warm from its lingering heat. Gavin trailed his fingers up and down their bare back. He’d told them he loves them—and they said it back.

That was last week.

He still wasn’t over it.

If Gavin was honest with himself, he wasn’t sure he would get over it any time soon.

He kissed their forehead. “I love you, my deviant,” he whispered. 

Their emotions were subdued with sleep, but they mumbled, “Love you, Gav,” quietly.

It was no small wonder they didn’t wake up from how his heart stuttered and then started pounding. Love you too. Love you too. Love you too.

How had this happened to him? How had he gotten so lucky? He’d never anticipated falling in love. It wasn’t usually a luxury afforded to incubi. In Gavin’s experience, the closest thing he got to love was sex.

This Freelancer, tucked safely in his arms, was the first person who treated him as more than that. Sure there had been attraction from the get-go—he was damn sexy and he knew it—but they had been kind. Wanted to get to know him as a person. Not just a body in their bed.

“Dream come true...” he whispered. “Dammit. Avior was right.”

He’d found his dreams because of that stupid D.A.M.N. campus.
