It's such a breath of fresh air seeing art like yours. I've always loved the idea of, but never been able to figure out how to do something like your Vietwardian pieces myself until I saw your work. I love the blending of the two, and it's really inspiring watching you bring a culture into a place it's not seen in.
Aww thank you anon!
I’ve found that much of the historical fashion community is completely oblivious to how much of their aesthetics are borrowed from non-European cultures. They’re familiar with terms like cultural appropriation or Orientalism but are completely ignorant of how deeply ingrained these things are. Which is why I wanted to take a hammer to the whole thing and turn “historical” “accuracy” on its head. Historical fashion that only includes white, Western fashion can never be fully accurate anyway.
Design thoughts under the cut because I have a lot to say!
I felt it was important to do more than just swapping in Vietnamese textiles, because I don’t feel like our textiles are visually distinctive enough to immediately register as Not European. Not least because so many European gowns of the era used Asian textiles. Ahem.
I feel like this is where a lot of modern fashion houses lose me. The clothes are pretty or eyecatching or weird, but I don’t get any sense of who would wear them. And this is especially true when European designers coopt non-European influences. It’s blatantly superficial.
I put a lot of thought into the structure and silhouette of the clothes I’m trying to meld together. Structure being all the individual layers but also the lines of a garment—the shape of the seams, the placement and angle and curvature of darts, the behavior of the different materials. Because I understand the physics of the clothes and the balance of the silhouettes, as well as the way in which they’re worn, I can choose things that will look good together while maintaining the elements that make clothes instantly recognizable.
Then there’s the cultural and social aspect. I like to invent characters to get myself into the headspace of someone actually wearing these clothes. What do they need from their wardrobe? Are they going for conspicuous consumption? Are they someone at the pinnacle of high fashion? Or someone more practical, or someone concerned with modesty?
I wanted to approach the designs from the perspective of young Vietnamese members of high society with the sociopolitical clout to influence and establish fashion trends. They have no interest in abandoning their culture in favor of Western tastes, and they only adopt what suits their fancy.

Hello, I'm reaching out because I was hoping to ask for permission to feature some of your SOC fan art in a video essay about the six of crows duology/Shadow and Bone TV show? (I mainly want to focus on the books but the show hasn't depicted some major stuff from the books yet obviously so fanart is great) I would link to your preferred socials in the YT Info and have your handle onscreen? Thanks so much for your time either way!
Thank you for asking! Could you DM me which pieces you’re thinking of featuring? Some of my SOC fanarts are a bit outdated and I’m kinda embarrassed about them now 😅

Congrats on the kickstarter! I'm CHUFFED I'm gonna get gingko earrings wheeeeee!!
(I assume we'll get asked somewhere down the line to communicate which ones we want for the 1 pair + 1 print tier?)
Yay!!! And yes you’ll be able to choose which design you want when the campaign ends! I’ll send out reward surveys to collect shipping addresses and design choices!

will the kickstarter be the only way to purchase the earrings? i would REALLY really love to support, but i just don’t have the funds right now, and don’t want to miss out on the accessories. do you foresee there being overstock?
So preferably the kickstarter would be the best way, since nothing gets made if we don’t reach the funding goal. That said, there will probably be extras of most items, so if you can’t make it within the 30 days of the project campaign, we can work something out via paypal. I can’t guarantee stock for anything though!

Can I ask what Izael and Azalas are from? They have absolutely wonderful designs and look very beautiful with your art style.
It looks to be a fantasy story setting of some kind if I had to guess. (And if it’s a story wip of your own making, please take this as invitation to say whatever you’d like to say about it.)
Thank you! They are from a story wip!
The basic premise is that these two come from rival families that are akin to rulers of city-states. The bird peeps also coexist with humans, who view them with everything from business-motivated friendliness to suspicion and hatred, varying from region to region.
Izael is sent to live with Azalas’s family, and Azalas’s little brother is sent to live with Izael’s in a sort of…. Alliance-Building Hostage Exchange. Izael lost his wings as a child, and the story is very much about exploring his disability and how he navigates a world that wasn’t built with him in mind, as well as the social aspect of living with a highly visible disability while already constantly being scrutinized by the public.
Aka I took an angel, ripped his wings off, and gave him PTSD.

I really like the start of your capsule wardrobe art! I was thinking about doing something similar (though we have very different styles lol) and then I stumbled across your account
You art is very pretty!
Aww thank you! I’ve seen a lot of people doing similar things and wanted to make my own. It’s a really satisfying project ☺️

20 & 30 for artist asks
god i hate my inbox i never saw this ask!!!
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy
Definitely hands! I love drawing hands even when i find them challenging.
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
Hmmm most of my original art tbh, I know most peeps are just here for the fanart and I like those pieces too, but my original pieces are really what I throw my heart and soul into. If I had to choose a single piece, maybe this one:
It's one of my best pieces but it didn't get much mileage!

Maybe they don’t know who the Asian artists are? I mean most art accounts on IG don’t post their personal info. At least from what I’ve seen. Also the fundraiser is clearly well intentioned and ppl should support it and raise money for the causes
You’re really coming into the inbox of an asian artist with this shit huh.

it sucks no Asian artists were involved :( the organiser is Asian themself so I don't think that was intentional, but the result is still so frustrating. love your art so much, you and other Asian artists deserve all the recognition and support
It was so bizarre going on ig and seeing this fundraiser everywhere that I hadn’t heard of at all. I originally figured I wasn’t asked to participate because I’m not exactly active, so I wasn’t even bothered until I saw that none of the artists besides xandrei were Asian. I didn’t even want to say anything at first, because I was worried about interfering with support for the fundraiser. But after some chatting with others in the fandom it turns out I wasn’t the only one who felt blindsided and frustrated by this. And then there’s the fact that apparently this whole thing is being hosted through redbubble... which, listen. I get not wanting or knowing how to deal with printing and shipping but the profit from sites like RB and S6 is laughably tiny. Some of us already have prints ready to go, they could have just asked around!
Anyway, thank you to everyone who has showered me with support since I made that post, I didn’t expect it to take off like that 💖While I have your attention, if you want to donate on my behalf directly to the AAPI, NAACP, or any of the fundraisers for victims of anti-asian or anti-black hate crimes, $10 will get you a gold foil print, while supplies last.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the exact same prints available in my storenvy, and I will eat the shipping costs if you show me proof of donation.

hi, i'm a mod for six of crows big bang (@sixofcrowsbb)! signups for the big bang are closing soon, so i'm sending you this in case you or any of your followers are interested in joining - we'd love to have you!! if you have any questions, the event askbox is always open :)
I’m flattered the invite but tbh I don’t feel like I’m suited to the general environment of the gvbb. I don’t see myself participating in future events unless there’s some kind of dramatic change, sorry! 🥰

Wow why do u assume the worst? I’m Asian myself. I have just never seen ig art accounts or even tumblr art accounts show their face or say their ethnicity. I didn’t even know you were Asian until you said it??? Stop always assuming that everyone has the worst intention ever when they send you an ask
Ok, anon, sure you are.
