by routed thru mandarin i mean i compared different mandarin translations and taigi>mandarin dictionaries and tled that to english so i feel like hopefully somewhere between those things lies a mostly accurate rendering. tho also i think there are some things where i would have done slightly more word for word if i were just posting a tl straight up rather than for subbing purposes where i wanted it to rly still retain its poetic quality rather than simply transmitting the meaning of what was being said T-T

I feel like I been talking about this a lot but I do think like dialects or accents of certain languages just fit the way you speak better sometimes and idk why

buying books for 2-7€ is the high i cannot stop chasing. its true sorry but its true! i just bought poes completed works for 5€ (originally 18€) and jane eyre for 3,5€ in THE penguin modern classics edition which is so beautiful and so sold out. on another stance, i find it so ridiculous how expensive books are in my country, i dont know how it is in other places but here they often go from 15-25€ and its highly unusual to get anything cheaper than that. also second hand bookstores are a dying breed and mainly sell antique historical books that are very expensive too. the joy of actually going to a book fair and finding books for 2-7€ that are actually interesting is something i have felt rarely... to actually have money to read what you want is a pleasure few get to feel

i've been thinking about this a lot recently and for like the last year since i've taken translation theory courses and gotten more proficient in my second language buuuuuut. only like 3% of published works in american/english first language book stores are translated from other languages. compare that to how quickly books published in english get translated into other languages. an author could be incredibly well known in their home country or to their audience of native language speakers, but they're still considered "nobodies" by the general english speaking population because of a lack of translations into english.

part of the problem i think is the cultural superiority english speakers feel in the world right now and how its trying to bury other cultures and languages because english is best. this then leads to nobody seeing a reason to translate works from other languages or only translating very few* because there isnt an audience for "foreign" literature. i dont think most of my classmates outside the spanish program have read many, if any works by non-english speaking authors and that really is a shame because it opens so many new viewpoints on the world and gives you a look into other cultures right in your own home!

*the exception here i think is anime/manga which has an incredibly dedicated fanbase creating fanlations for smaller series that havent gotten official english dubs/subs/translations. japanese literature still has a hard time on the market in america though

#this isnt super coherent dont take this as fact or anything just my opinion #but i have noticed that its somewhat difficult to get anything other than a few classics as translated novels #officially anyway. like i have 100 years of solitude and hopscotch on my bookshelf #i think when i was looking for a copy of el lugar sin limites (jose donoso) i saw an english translation of htat #but it was more likely to be in portuguese or french or its original spanish #i think they didnt have any copies of the english text actually #uhm. also poetry in other languages when translated? exquisite #shoutout to translators who do poetry because goddamn that is so hard #to make it sound pretty and preserve the original meaning in that way to a new audience #translation is the art and science of languages i think. #anyway the site i linked had a translations database but it got moved so. idk what to do with that. #uhm anyway try reading more translated books or short stories #you can find quiroga's short stories translated online for free #or at least i found a la deriva for free online and it uses really striking imagery in it #shay speaks
