@ivyyara happy birthday! under the cut is a lil snippet of the wlw regina/joanna fic i’ve had ticking away for a lil while now. 

She’d spent nearly a year now bristling at the invitation she could see painted on Regina’s lips, tucked into the seams of her skirts, and spritzed in the honey floral notes of her perfume. Spent nearly a year wondering at the bravery it must take to walk with her head held high in pubs, bars, and lecture halls filled with men whose hungry eyes followed her every move. Nearly a year swallowing down the urge to tell her that she didn’t need to do this, that she didn’t have to lean into their expectations like this; she didn’t have to conform to the feminine ideals that surrounded them — to be relegated to an object of desire when she was so clearly more. 

Jo had spent nearly a year now lingering in the limbo that existed between disdain and envy; wishing she had the bravery to play in femininity while doubting that what drove Regina was bravery at all.

But now she was realising Regina hadn’t been performing for men at all. Regina hadn’t been colouring her cheeks, curling her hair, and fluttering her eyelashes for their attention; in spite of their attention; or for some kind of twisted protection from their attention. 

Sure, it acted as armour, Jo could see that. She’d stood witness to its effectiveness in the difference between how the two of them had been treated after that bar brawl back in Staffordshire; even with blood spilling from her split knuckles with a knocked out punter at her feet and curse words Jo hadn’t even heard before spilling from her lips, Regina had been treated as something breakable by the bar manager while Jo — shaking in the aftermath of violence she would never be comfortable with and tried so desperately hard to avoid — had been clapped on the shoulder with a rough hand. The man Regina had knocked out with the hard edge of a table had been dumped outside, other patrons grumbling about him beating on a girl and—

Jo had known they hadn’t meant her, even if she had been the one pushed first. Even if he only hit Regina after she hit him back in retaliation. 

And Regina had shaken off the attendant hands of those around her with the same ease that she slipped back into what they expected of her. Fingers grazed against the bruise that was sure to bloom against the apple of her cheek as she’d turned wild eyes on Jo, taking in the damage that had been done — and that she’d wrought in return, in revenge; a broken table, a broken chair, and Jo standing amidst the wreckage and holding onto aching ribs — flitting over and asking for an ice pack, please, for my friend.

In the blink of an eye she’d transformed and not a single person in that pub had hesitated in falling over themselves to give her what she asked for. Not one of them questioned how the poor girl (too pretty to be treated in such a way, how could he? he’ll not be drinking in here again, don’t you worry. the fucker’s barred) had laid out a man twice her size.

Later that night, when Brian and Freddie had joined them, Regina had laughed when Brian asked what had happened to the man. She’d laughed and waved a hand carelessly, Oh, they kicked him out after I knocked him out, Bri. Don’t you worry. All taken care of, and Freddie had met her eye across the table as if to say: Do you understand now?

She hadn’t. She hadn’t understood at all.

But she was starting to understand now.
