Lord Quenton Qoherys: was the first Lord of Harrenhal and the head of House Qoherys Ser Quenton was the master-at-arms at Dragonstone during Aegon's Conquest. He was named Lord of Harrenhal by King Aegon I Targaryen after Aegon had extinguished House Hoare during his conquest. Lord Quenton had two strong sons and a plump grandson to continue the family line, but as his first wife had died from spotted fever in 1 BC, he agreed to wed a daughter of his liege lord, Edmyn Tully of Riverrun. In 9 AC, he died from a fall from his horse and was succeeded by his grandson, Gargon. Conquest Era.

Prince Aemon Targaryen: was a member of House Targaryen. He was the third born child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Aemon was married to Lady Jocelyn Baratheon. Together, they had a daughter, Princess Rhaenys. Aemon was a dragonrider whose mount was Caraxes. His mother Alysanne would often say, while laughing, that Aemon's first word had been, "Why?". In 62 AC, King Jaehaerys formally granted the seven-year-old Aemon the title of Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the throne. At the feast that followed Aemon's appointment, Queen Alysanne sat Aemon beside Lady Jocelyn Baratheon. The two children spent the entire evening talking and laughing together. He is the father of Princess Rhaenys. Jaeherys Era.

Princess Saera Targaryen: the ninthborn child and fifthborn daughter of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Saera was a courageous and clever, girl, in her own way as clever as her brother Vaegon. She was just as strong, quick and spirited as her sister Alyssa. Saera was tempestuous, demanding, and disobedient. Her first word was "no", which she said often and loudly. She quickly had three favorites of all the men who attended her: Jonah Mooton, the heir to Maidenpool, Roy Connington, the Lord of Griffin's Roost, and Ser Braxton Beesbury, the heir to Honeyholt. Instead of hiding within the Seven Kingdoms, however, Saera had found passage on a ship at Oldtown, which had brought her to Lys. Saera, infamous but wealthy, left Lys for Volantis a few years before 99 AC. In Volantis, she became the proprietor of a famous pleasure house. She had at least three bastard sons, who would be the dragonseeds of House Blackfyre in Essos. Jaeherys Era.

Princess Gael Targaryen: was the thirteenth and last child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Born during winter, Gael was also called the Winter Child. After her sisters Alyssa, Daella, and Viserra had died within the span of five years (82–87 AC), Gael became a comfort for her mother Queen Alysanne, along with her older sister Maegelle. Gael became Alysanne's constant shadow, and even slept with her in her bed. In 99 AC, Gael disappeared from court. It was announced that she had died of a summer fever. After the deaths of King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne, it was revealed that Gael had been seduced and impregnated by a traveling singer. Gael had given birth to a stillborn son. Jaeherys Era.

Princess Viserra Targaryen: was the tenth-born child of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Viserra was the most beautiful of Queen Alysanne Targaryen's daughters. She had deep purple eyes and silver-gold hair, flawless white skin, and fine features. serra was a vain girl. Once, when a young squire called her a goddess, she simply agreed with him. The attention of great lords, famous knights, and callow boys fed her vanity until it "became a raging fire". Viserra delighted in playing one boy off against another and setting them on foolish quests or having them perform contests. According to Alysanne, Viserra desired to become a queen, and therefore aimed to marry her brother Baelon, not for love but for ambition. Viserra then turned to Baelon, hoping for him to rescue her according to court gossip. One night, she slipped past Baelon's guards and climbed naked into his bed. Jaeherys Era.

Lady Alarra Stark: Alarra Stark was the daughter of Lord Alaric Stark and his wife from House Mormont. According to her father, Lord Alaric Stark, Alarra was "as sweet to look upon as any southron lady. Despite her father's initial dislike for Queen Alysanne, Alarra had been kind and gentle to the queen, often reminding the Queen of her own daughters. Alarra did became aware of the affair of her father and the queen but kept the secret. When Queen Alysanne Targaryen visited Winterfell in 58 AC, Alarra and Alysanne became particularly close. Near the end of 58 AC, Alarra came to King's Landing with her two brothers to attend the tourney celebrating the tenth anniversary of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen's coronation. At this time, Alarra also became a lady-in-waiting to the Queen. Jaeherys Era.

Lady Megga Tyrell: is a member of a junior branch of House Tyrell. She is the granddaughter of Ser Quentin Tyrell, a cousin of Mace Tyrell, the Lord of Highgarden, and is the only daughter of Ser Olymer Tyrell and his wife, Lysa Meadows. Megga has two older brothers: Raymund and Rickard Tyrell. Megga likes to play kissing games with boys and sometimes her cousins. While not a great singer, Megga plays the lyra and piano wonderfully. Megga is one of Queen Margaery Tyrell's ladies-in-waiting. Almost all of the men named as Margaery's lovers have denied the accusation or recanted, so she and her cousins, including Megga, are handed over by the High Septon to the custody of Lord Randyll Tarly. Tarly swears a holy oath to return them for their trial. Song Era.

Sera Flowers: Sera tends to take things less seriously than Mira does, like casually playing with Margaery's seating plan for the Purple Wedding and stealing Queen Cersei's wine. Mira can confide in her, though Margaery seems to be in Sera's best interest rather than House Forrester's. Sera is revealed to be a bastard, she is Mance's bastard but the Tyrell covered that with the surname Durwell. She confesses that she is attracted to both Jaime Lannister and Oberyn Martell, and Mira has the option to agree, though she sounds unsure. Sera escaped before the cousins and Margaery ladies were taken and ran to the Reach, her biological father is unknown to everyone but Lady Olenna. Song Era.

King Stannis Baratheon: Stannis Baratheon was the younger brother of King Robert Baratheon and older brother of Renly Baratheon. On account of the revelation of Robert's supposed children's true parentage, Stannis declares himself the rightful king after Robert's death as his rightful heir, and begins a campaign to take the Iron Throne. After assassinating his younger brother Renly using bloodmagic, due to Renly also having claimed the throne despite being the youngest brother, Stannis almost succeeds in taking King's Landing at the Battle of the Blackwater, but is ultimately repelled by the armies of Tywin Lannister and House Tyrell. As his wars drag on, Stannis falls further and further under the sway of the red priestess Melisandre. After saving the Night's Watch from Mance Rayder's wildling army in the battle for the Wall, Stannis marches on Winterfell. Song Era.

Lady Shyra Errol: is the Lady of Haystack Hall and the head of House Errol, her unlike stormlander looks come from her father marrying a woman from the westerlands. Because of this, she sees no proof in the rumors regarding Princess Myrcella rumors, as she is a stormlander with unlike features, and golden hair. Lady Shyra supports Renly Baratheon during the War of the Five Kings. She has one son who she acts as Regent as well and after the death of Renly, she remains on the Stormlands. Currently, her castle is under the attack of the Golden Company. Song Era.

Lady Liane Vance: Liane Vance is a noblewoman of House Vance of Wayfarer's Rest. She is the eldest daughter of the heir of Wayfarer's Rest, Ser Karyl Vance. Liane's grandfather, Lord Vance, dies at the battle below the Golden Tooth. Ser Karyl Vance becomes the new Lord of Wayfarer's Rest, and Liane the heir of her house. Liane becomes a field nurse for everyone after the red wedding and travels to House Bracken and House Blackwood to tend to the injured, she is said to have magic in her as she carries a piece of weirwood tree in her, always. Song Era.

Laena Longwaters: Laena is the recognized bastard daughter of Thena Celtigar and Rennifer Longwaters, marking one of the few times Velaryon blood and Celtigar mix. Due to this, Laena has dragonrider blood as well access to the Celtigar cell with the secrets of Valyria and the keys of the long night as well the coming battle of the dawn. OC. Song Era.

Lord Kaento Qoehrys: The remains of House Qoehrys from Harrenhal, they had been in Lys and Volantis gathering their own forces and money and they are travelling with Prince Aegon and the Golden Company to reclaim Harrenhal as their ancestral home. Despite his refusal, his daughter would be travelling in the second command of the ships, however, she is delayed with the arrival of Queen Daenerys Targaryen in Lys. Kaento is known to be able to use a flaming sword and has stock of dragonglass. OC. Song Era.

Lady Merea Qoehrys: Daughter of Kaento. She wants to travel with her father in the Golden Company, which he promises he will send word once Aegon takes House Connington and a few Stormlanders Houses. When news arrives, it marks the arrival of Daenerys Targaryen to Lys and intrigued, Merea wants to talk to the woman, without her father's approval as she always had her doubts of Prince Aegon's real heritage. Merea only wishes for their family to return home. She takes kindly to sing some old Valyrian songs to Dany's dragons. OC. Song Era.

This is probably really random but

If we're going to talk about sexual trauma in the Shadowhunter Chronicles that never gets acknowledged, what about Jocelyn's abuse under Valentine and how that influences how she acts throughout the series?

Also, Annabel didn't deserve to be the villain just because Julian's manipulations finally backfired on him (I love him, but still)

Okay. I do see it acknowledged at least a little by the series/fandom that Jocelyn probably has trauma she's carrying forward, so I think the reason it's not particularly touched on is because she's such a bit-part character to the story at large. In this instance I do prefer the show over the books: I feel like Maxim Roy brought a layer of depth to the character that wasn't otherwise given by the series or the books, since in both Jocelyn is so background to her daughter's saga.

As for Annabel, there are lots and lots and lots of things that her villainy could be attributed to. But please, let's not blame the scared orphan who's never had anyone teach him proper coping skills. And let's certainly not say he was trying to manipulate anybody. I'm not saying he's a faultless angel, but who at seventeen would know how to handle a situation as delicate as Annabel's properly even if you're both neurotypical and in a healthy functioning family with good strong guiding figures to look up to. Julian has none of that (unless you count Diana but she hasn't been there long enough to really be a parental figure in the way he needs) and there's no way he could've possibly known what he was supposed to do with her, especially not when all of his protective sibling alarms are going haywire as they would be.

Elseworld 64 | Jocelyn Jackman

Jocelyn Jackman is the illegitimate daughter of Mark Mardon, and the wife of Nora Allen-West. She is a respected artist, and works as a gallery attendant in Central City. Jocelyn is the host of two altars. As Misty Mardon, she is the criminal Weather Witch. As Auretta Allen-West, she is the hero Watercolor.

HISTORY

After a one-night stand, police officer Julie Jackman discovered she was pregnant. Nine months later, Jocelyn was brought into the world. For the first five years of her life, she was raised with love.

At five years old, Jocelyn came across the body of her mother who had been murdered by a cult. The moment caused her latent mutant-gene to awaken, and unknown to the people at the time her first altar.

After a paternity test, social workers were shocked to discover Jocelyn's father was Mark Mardon.

Upon discovering her existence, Mark Mardon kidnaps her to dissect her to better understand his own powers. Fortunately, the other rogues strong-armed Mark into properly raising her so Mark renamed her Misty Mardon.

He came to appreciate this as Misty proved to be as powerful as him and used them to aid him on crime sprees. The media took to calling her Weather Witch, which she took in stride with great pride.

Though the Rogues started to slowly notice something was off. Misty would flicker between wanting to commit crimes to wanting nothing to do with the lifestyle. She'd show an interest in painting, only to ruin the canvases the next day. There was a difference in whether or not she could use her powers as well, including which powers she used.

It culminated in Misty running away, but when they tracked her down she was using her powers sporadically which went against her careful training. She didn't respond to her name, instead Jocelyn and how she wasn't sure why she was kidnapped by the Rogues but she wanted nothing to do with them.

Despite the immense power she held, the Rogues managed to talk her down and explained everything much to Jocelyn's disbelief. Mark had no interest in this side of his daughter, but Roy G Bivolo took the reigns and taught her art. Under her mother's maiden name, Jocelyn slowly started to build a reputation as an artist and got a job at the local gallery as a tour guide.

One day, while working as a tour guide in her teens, the gallery was attacked by another rogue. Nora Allen-West was the speedster who answered the distress call, and encountered a woman named Auretta who used her knowledge of the gallery to help. The two ended up taking the rogue out together, which cemented a crush on one another though they were unaware of each other's identities.

Later, Nora attended the gallery to ask about Auretta only to be told there was no one with that name that had worked there.

PERSONALITY

Jocelyn Jackman is an elegant and mature woman, who is highly intelligent able to navigate the art world and the upper elite. She has invested in keeping the life she built for herself intact, carefully utilizing the eccentric artist narrative to her benefit.

Misty Mardon is a chaotic and fun-loving gal, who uses her powers openly and sporadically. She loves experimenting with them to the detriment of the environment around her. She has an impulse to steal art but doesn't know why, so she always returns the pieces at the end of the day. She is openly flirty, particularly with Timestream.

Auretta Allen-West is compassionate and kind, though she comes off as more bashful and self-conscious in comparison to the elegance of Jocelyn and the will of Misty. Auretta has an intense moral code, and will selflessly put herself in danger to protect others even at her own detriment.

POWERS

Weather Manipulation: Just like her father, Jocelyn has the ability to localize weather, creating hail, lightning, and other destructive forms of weather. She can produce blizzards, summon lightning bolts, fly using air currents, produce fog, and generate winds. Essentially Jocelyn can produce any type of weather pattern imaginable, as well as another phenomenon such as tornadoes. For a good chunk of her life, each altar could control a different part of the weather with Misty controlling storms, Jocelyn controlling air, and Auretta controlling water.

ABILITIES

Art Appraisal: Jocelyn can examine paintings, sculptures and antiques to determine their market value by identifying the quality of art.

Gardening Proficiency: Misty is a skilled gardener, as similarly to her father she used it as a way to master her weather powers.

Painting Proficiency: Jocelyn is skilled in all associated painting skills and techniques.

TRIVIA

Important Note: This is my first character with Dissociative Identity Disorder, so feedback is immensely welcomed.

All three are trans women. This is a nod to her being a gender-bent version of Joshua 'Josh' Jackman, who was a comic canon son of Mark Mardon and Julie Jackman.

Due to Elseworld 64 Mark Mardon being asian, they are biracial.

In Elseworld 64, Mark Mardon is a metahuman who uses a wand to channel his power rather than being the source of his power.

as the third born daughter, it seems all that she could be has already been taken by either gael ( begrudgingly, the childrearing ) or gyda ( their mother’s old chainmaille ) — straining for individuality or selfishness ( one and the same, at times, but who cares ), young gwyn would attempt to reach out for father instead, an endeavor that while others ( most of the other goodbrother girls ) would fail, she would succeed. before the rebellion made him harder, and even afterwards, she took prize in being one of the few to pry a smile out of him, and, most of all, she enjoyed accompanying him to the family mines, learning of the ores and the business and economy, while taking home whatever shiny little rock she could.

although she trained with the sword, as well as the needle ( her mother had, after all, been a notorious shieldmaiden and now she was a loyal wife who had given her lord fifteen children ), gwynesse preferred the former, if only because being a lady paired up well with what she was truly good at : cunning.

still, once she was sixteen, she asked to take a part of a crew that would travel to essos. although she cared nothing for physical exertion activities, she greatly enjoyed the trip — it made her realize that the iron islands were nothing compared to the world and, perhaps, she would rather be elsewhere. somewhere better, greater.

the realization of her wish was a double edged sword: while she did manage to go somewhere greater, she almost died ( or actually died, and was brought back to life by the drowned god who wished to set her to greatness, in her own mind ) when the ship wrecked, and she washed around westerland waters. she was rescued by the heir to lannisport, who took a liking to her and took her to his home to be cared for. there, fearing she would be killed or worse for being an ironborn, she pretended to be amnesiac and was allowed to remain at the castle out of courtesy.

during that time, she effectively managed to make the lord heir fall for her ( and if she fell for him too, it was, then, a sweet consequence ). once she fell with child, she arranged so her brothers would come retrieve her — the shot gun of sorts wedding was a good enough deal, for she did bring a big dowry, even if her father - in - law ( and possibly her husband, though he was easier to bend ) was not very pleased with having an ironborn for a daughter.

within two years after that, her husband was called to lead a part of the lannister fleet, and gwynesse remained at lannisport, bregundigly bearing babies and facing scrutiny from the westerlanders who thought of her as too foreign to be trusted — a sentiment her father - in - law shared, refusing to allow her in and aid him with anything of importance, much to her distaste. at some point, she begins poisoning him with lead ( something that has no taste, no smell and that slowly can drive one to madness and several other unpleasant physical ailments ), which leads him to become more dependent on her and, of course, she takes advantage of that to help him rule lannisport.

currently, it’s been over ten years since the poisoning started, and if anyone points at her, gwynesse is offended and can easily begin tearing up if necessary, even offering to take on his food and drink if they are so suspicious. her husband defends her, likely unbeknownst, something she is glad for. gwynesse has no qualms in engaging in falsity, and even takes enjoyment of that, of this power.

her father - in - law is greatly debilitated, of course, and she is, for all purposes, mistress and ruler of lannisport, a duty she does not take lightly and tries her best to always stay on top, either that be to know who comes into town, what goods arrive and of the deals happening in it — it is an understatement to say she is controlling, and likes things her way. while some may frown at such power being granted to an ironborn, most have come to terms that she is as westerlander as one can be, proved by her loyalty to lannisport and to the many children she has birthed and raises under the light of the seven.

truthfully, she does not feel westerlander — but also she no longer feels ironborn. this is not a sentiment that disturbs her much, however, for she is content with her position and very busy occupation, but she is growing more bothered by the day by the ironborn growing bolder around the westerlands coast and how that may disturb her security in her role. besides mother, wife, ruler, daughter, sister, she is now being pushed to be a diplomat, a position that may be all too suited to her silver tongued ways, but that she is less pleased to juggle, as it may jeopardize all that she prizes and worked so hard to build.

i’d love more goodbrothers, particularly geirdis, her twin sister ( annie has put the wc on the main with all the information but i’m glad to help out with more ideas if needed ). the goodbrothers are often around lannisport, either for business or for familial affection.

the friendship is not entirely stretched to the other ironborn, but it wouldn’t be unlikely some do come in lannisport and i think interactions between gwyn, who has definitely been ‘corrupted’ by the way of the westerosi and enjoys dealing with the gold price rather than the iron price, and her old countrymen.

anyone from the westerlands or who stops by lannisport really. this also includes people who have not come to lannisport, but do deals within the city or with the lannisters of lannisport, as she often speaks for them all

due to the children and to her duties at the realm of lannisport, she is not often away from it, but it’s possible her husband could have taken her to some nearby places, or even acquaintances from that travel over a decade ago, when she was just one out of many goodbrothers

the lannisters of lannisport! please!!! at the moment i only have her husband and his sister, but they’re both pretty interesting — there’s all sort of things to explore with her husband, his position at sea, the shift to proper lordship and how he deals with her ambitions and everything else in their relationship; his sister is rosamund lannister, who is acting as lady / doppleganger for myrcella on kings landing. i’ve sent wcs for the both of them but i’m very game to discuss or change anything if necessary!

While inclining toward the latter opinion, I have to wonder if Stanley Kubrick had lived to see it through the postproduction stage -- he died shortly after submitting a final cut to the studio -- he would have made it into something that inspires less ambivalence. I also wonder if he hadn't yielded to studio pressure to cast movie stars in the lead roles, we would have found the characters played by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman less glossy and more interesting. And then there are the orgy scenes, digitally altered to avoid an NC-17 rating. Movie orgies are rarely titillating even when they're not stifled by censorship, but the ones in this film are too choreographed to be even mildly involving. My main objection, however, is that every time I see the movie I can't remember a few days later what it was all about. Which makes me wonder if it's about anything.

Dieu n’est pas un être lointain qui nous regarde de haut sans vraiment nous comprendre. En se mettant à notre portée dans la personne de Jésus-Christ, il a prouvé de manière irréfutable que ce que nous vivons ici-bas l’intéresse au plus haut point. Et si nous nous penchons sur la vie du Christ, nous ne pouvons plus ranger ses conseils dans le tiroir des religiosités et autres « bondieuseries » d’un autre temps.

Cet homme a galéré plus que beaucoup d’entre nous… et il a toujours su prendre le recul nécessaire pour ne pas craquer. Même s’il a grandi dans une famille « sympa », ses proches comprenaient de moins en moins l’orientation que prenait sa vie. Il s’est investi dans une grande cause, mais il était pratiquement le seul à y croire. Et le jour où il a accompli sa mission au péril de sa vie, tous ses amis l’ont lâché. Il est bon de se rappeler que c’est la religion qui l’a fait tuer. C’est son propre peuple qui s’est débarrassé de lui auprès des oppresseurs de l’époque. Pourtant tout dans la manière dont il a mené son existence montre qu’il savait ce qu’il faisait et qu’il en connaissait le prix…

Alors, quand une personne de cette envergure vous parle, c’est du lourd, ça tient la route ; il n’y a plus de doute sur le réalisme et la pertinence de ce qu’il dit ! Lisez les évangiles par vous-mêmes, et vous comprendrez.

One more chance before I hate you.

In the last year, I can remember 3 instances where people screwed up and were on the receiving end of online hate and trolling.

Jocelyn Chia - She is a stand-up comedian and cracked up a joke about the disappeared flight MH370 which was very insensitive to the victims and their families.

Pushpal Roy - An HDFC bank manager who was recorded abusing junior employees for not reaching their sales target.

Cameroon Green - Australian cricketer who took a controversial catch of Shubman Gill in the final of WTC between India vs Australia.

Now these are just recent examples off the top of my head, I am sure every day some people screw up and receive online hate. I read about this stuff on social media and go through the comments that people post. For example, Jocelyn is a Singaporean-born and one of the comments was "Jocelyn does not represent us Singaporeans. She represents her family and her upbringing". More comments were worse than this. Going through these comments I felt bad. Do we really know her family values and her upbringing? I am in no way defending what she said. Whatever she said was definitely wrong and insensitive but what my point is do we really need to stoop this low to make someone feel so bad about their act? For all that we know her parents must be the most sensitive people and they truly feel sorry for what she said. Or Jocelyn herself is very sensitive but this one joke is what she did not thought it through. She did not know that it could hurt people the way it did. I mean this has happened to me so many times when I say something in a group and then later thinking about it I regret what I said.

Same with Pushpal Roy. Few people didn't find him online so were commenting on HDFC's page about him. Obviously, what he did and how he spoke to his colleagues is not appreciated and should not be tolerated but what if this is 3rd time he is telling them and they are still making the same mistake? Do we know the back and forth of the story? We see one side of the coin, make our instant judgments, and share our thoughts in a very insensitive way.

In this age of social media, no one has time but everyone has an opinion. They don't have time to research things, try to understand the issue to its core, form an opinion, and then post it online. They see an incident in isolation and immediately start spewing venom. Since we do no research on our own, a lot of our opinions are dependent on how the post is written.

Consider these two headlines,

"Monster on the Streets: Ruthless Murderer Kills Own Boss!" and "Tragic Homicide Occurs: Individual Involved in Fatal Incident with Former Employer"

Reading the first headline you have already labeled the murderer as a villain without understanding the situation. The second headline is at least a bit balanced. It encourages you to read more and find out what was the actual situation. Why the employee had to kill his own boss. Imagine we scrolling through our social media feed, read the first headline and within 10 seconds we find ourselves commenting on the post "This person should be hanged. He has no right to live. What an inhuman creature. ". No time to think or reflect. The worst case is when the news headline mentions the race or religion of the person who has done this. "Ruthless Asian Murderer...." or "Ruthless Muslim Murderer...." or "Ruthless Hindu Murderer...." and again we as "innocent" social media consumers would fall for it. Some would get all riled up and add a hate comment on the post for the community, and someone would do nothing but in their mind make a point about how a member of a particular community did this heinous act.

Now there are a lot of wrongs here. It is a fact that someone killed someone. Why they killed some person is secondary but killing someone is wrong. It is wrong that the article wrote a sensationalized headline for more views/likes or whatever and it is also wrong that we get angry about this immediately just after reading the headline and without understanding the complete picture. So yes, there are a lot of wrongs but which of these wrongs can we control? Which of these wrongs can we change? Can we take a break before forming our opinions? Can we give some time to understand the situation completely?

Can we give that person one more chance before we start hating that person for what they did which may or may not impact us? Maybe it was just in the heat of the moment, maybe they were weak for that 10 seconds when they committed the mistake. Can we allow them to be a human who makes mistakes and not behave in a way that we have never done anything wrong?

Can we just take a deep breath before we say or post anything?

LE « BLUEPRINT » DE JAY Z : MICHAEL JORDAN, MICHAEL JACKSON ET LE 11 SEPTEMBRE

The Blueprint, l’album qui a survécu au 11 septembre 2001.

Ou pour citer Jay Z un an plus tard sur The Bounce : « On dit du Blueprint qu’il est un classique/Ben Laden n’a rien pu faire/Le 11 septembre marquera à jamais le début du règne du révolutionnaire Jay Guevara ».

Géopolitique et débat sur son statut mis à part (lire à ce sujet notre chronique du sol au plafond), ce sixième solo de Shawn Carter s’écoute de son propre aveu comme une collection de « ses pensées du moment » (« Yeah, just my thoughts (…) what I'm feelin' at the time »).

Enregistré en deux petites semaines, il brasse donc quantité de références difficilement compréhensibles pour qui n’a pas connu l’époque.

Pas de panique, les voici décortiquées en long, en large et en travers.

Les thugs du sud londonien

La ref’ ? La pochette de l’album qui reprend un cliché sur lequel apparaît l’ancien gangster Dave Courtney en train de donner une conférence à des étudiants d'Oxford

Comme pour toutes les précédentes pochettes d’album de Jay Z (Reasonable Doubt/la trilogie Life/The Dynasty: Roc La Familia), on retrouve la légende du game Jonathan Mannion à la manœuvre (la baraque d’Eminem de The Marshall Mathers LP c’est lui, DMX dans la baignoire remplie de sang de Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood c'est lui, The Game assis sur la pile de pneus Daytona de The Documentary c’est encore lui...).

Pour Blueprint, il s’est inspiré d’une photo extraite de The Firm, un livre du photographe de mode et documentariste anglais Jocelyn Bain Hogg qui plonge dans les méandres du crime organisé du South London.

Bien évidemment, Jay a rajouté sa touche en s’habillant d’une veste Rocawear et en remplaçant le téléphone sur le bureau par un microphone.

Qu’il soit ici vu en train de galvaniser ses troupes ou de faire la leçon à ses compétiteurs dépendra de l’interprétation de chacun.

Slick Rick

La ref’ ? La très martiale entrée en matière The Ruler’s Back dont le titre rend hommage au morceau du même nom du rappeur à l’éternel bandeau sur l’œil

Et oui, il s’agit bien d’un hommage et non d’un plagiat, comme Jay l’a confié en interview pour XXL : « The Great Adventures of Slick Rick est l’un des plus grands albums jamais enregistrés. Je voulais lui rendre hommage car je suis amoureux de cette culture, vraiment. Ce peut être parfois à mon détriment et il arrive que je sois critiqué pour ça, mais il est important de respecter la culture. »

Pour les plus jeunes, Slick Rick peut à la fois être considéré comme le roi du storytelling et le roi du bling-bling depuis 1988, date de son premier album, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick.

Malheureusement pour lui, une sombre affaire de tentative de meurtre doublée de multiples soucis avec les services d’immigration (il est britannique) l’ont empêché d’avoir la carrière qui aurait dû être la sienne.

Amil

La ref’ ? « F*ckin with me, you gotta drop Amil » sur The Ruler’s Back

Jamais timide quand il s’agit de mentionner dans ses textes les membres de Roc-A-Fella, Jay Z nous renseigne par un subtil jeu de mots (« Amil/A million ») qu’il a rendu son contrat à son ancien featuring préféré du crew (Can I Get A, Hey Papi, Jigga What, Jigga Who…).

Depuis, pour celle par l’intermédiaire de qui son patron a rencontré Beyoncé, c’est le calme plat.

Idem pour les binômes Oschino & Sparks et Mickey & Mallory entendus plus tard sur All I Need, à ceci près qu’ils n’ont eux même pas eu droit à une ligne quand est venu leur tour de passer à la compta.

Le producteur Lance Rivera

La ref’ ? « I’m too sexy for jail (…) Mr. District Attorney, I'm not sure if they told you/I'm on TV every day, where the fuck could I go to? » sur The Ruler’s Back

2 décembre 1999. Alors que son très attendu Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter vient d’être piraté à quelques jours de sa sortie, Jay Z croise dans une soirée le prétendu responsable de cette fuite, un certain Lance ‘Un’ Rivera.

Pas encore du genre à rapper sur l’art contemporain et à porter des sandales, ni une ni deux, il s’approche de lui entouré de ses gars, et le plante de deux coups de couteau à l’épaule et à l’abdomen.

Libéré sous caution après s’être rendu de lui-même aux autorités le lendemain matin, Jay Z ne fait pas pour autant profil bas lors des deux ans que vont durer la procédure.

Cf. son duo avec R. Kelly au titre évocateur, Guilty Until Proven Innocent, ou cette ligne lâchée à quelques semaines à peine de son procès dans laquelle il rappelle au procureur « qu’il est trop sexy pour la prison », « qu’il passe tous les jours à la télé » et « qu’il n’a l’intention d’aller nulle part ».

Face à tant d’insolence, la justice ne le condamnera qu’à trois années de mise à l’épreuve.

Au-delà de sa personne, cette décision, couplée à l’acquittement de Puff Daddy dans une affaire de fusillade, marque pour de bon l’entrée du rap dans l’ère corporate.

Rosa Parks

Décidément quelle intro.

Fréquemment décrié pour son apolitisme et son rap champagne, Jay Z name droppe celle qui un jour d’avril 1955 « posa son cul où elle le voulut » dixit Booba en refusant de céder sa place à un passager blanc dans un autobus.

Comme d’autres avant elles, ce geste lui valut d’écoper d’une amende de 15 dollars. Rosa Parks refusa néanmoins de s’en acquitter, déclenchant là une vague de protestation inédite dans tous les États-Unis.

Un an plus tard, la Cour suprême déclarera ainsi anticonstitutionnelles les lois ségrégationnistes dans les bus.

Karl Kani

La ref’ ? « Nigga, you a lame, you's the fag model for Karl Kani, Esco ads » sur Takeover

Parmi l’avalanche de crottes de nez envoyées à Nas (sur sa discographie sujette à caution, sur sa street crédibilité, sur son garde du corps qui rappe mieux que lui...), Jay Z le raille pour avoir « fait la tarlouze chez Karl Kani ».

Niveau mauvaise foi, voilà un sommet : passe encore que la marque XXXL a autrefois engagé 2Pac et Notorious B.I.G. comme modèles, mais à la même période Jay posait lui aussi (et dans les mêmes positions) pour sa marque Rocawear.

Prodigy

La ref’ ? « Quand je dealais en 88, tu jouais à la ballerine/Je t’ai vu, j’ai les photos » sur Takeover

Cible première de Takeover (le couplet sur Nas n’a été rajouté qu’après coup), la moitié des Mobb Deep a pris cher sur disque comme sur scène.

Lors du festival Hot 97’s 2001 Summer Jam qui se déroulait en amont, Jay Z l’a en effet affiché en dévoilant à la surprise générale la photo ci-dessus qui le montre enfant en train de prendre un cours de danse.

Rien de bien méchant en soi, si ce n’est que dans un monde sans internet, la rumeur a très longtemps couru que Pee portait un tutu.

Bo Dereck

Le rôle est resté dans les mémoires (le film moins), notamment pour sa petite foulée en bord de mer rythmé par le Boléro de Ravel, ainsi que pour ses braids blondes qui lui allaient si bien.

Amis de la cancel culture, il n’est pas trop tard pour vous donner bonne conscience sur les réseaux pour dénoncer cette grossière tentative d’appropriation culturelle.

Evisu

Comme aujourd’hui AMIRI ou hier True Religion, Evisu Genes étaient au début du siècle la marque de fringues pref’ des rappeurs US.

Fondée en 1991 par le japonais Hidehiko Yamane, son nom renvoie à la divinité shintoïste de la pêche et de la prospérité, Ebisu.

Reconnaissable entre mille pour ses grands M peints à l’arrière de ses jeans (qui étaient en réalité des silhouettes de mouette), Evisu comptait parmi ses ambassadeurs les plus ardents les sudistes Lil Wayne, T.I., Young Jeezy... et Beyoncé, qui, dans le clip de Lose My Breath en 2004, remuait son derrière dans un taille basse brut dont les coutures étaient rudement mises à l’épreuve.

Joie de la cohérence, avec le retour en grâce de la marque depuis quelques saisons (merci Travis Scott, merci Lil Uzi Vert), Evisu s’est retrouvé à nouveau référencé par les Carter en 2018 (« I got M's like the back of Evisu » dans leur morceau commun Apeshit).

Dapper Dan

« Dapper Dan c’est le blueprint de la mode dans la culture rap. C’est lui qui a montré la marche à suivre dans le ghetto et chez les célébrités. »

Ça, c’est ce qu’écrivait Missy Elliot en 2020 dans le top 100 des personnalités les plus influentes de la planète du TIME.

Connu dans les années 80 pour customiser n’importe quel vêtement avec des logos de marques de luxe, si Dapper Dan a pourtant longtemps fait office de paria dans le petit milieu de la mode (il lui a fallu attendre 2018 pour que Gucci, sa marque fétiche, daigne enfin lui proposer une collaboration en bonne et due forme), il a toujours été une star dans le rap.

Jay Z joue ainsi sur sa réputation et le double sens de la lettre G en clamant : 1) qu’il porte du Gucci acheté en magasin, pas de la contrefaçon 2) qu’il est un vrai gangster et n’a à ce titre pas besoin d’en faire des caisses.

Sam Bowie

Une liste aussi longue que les Twins Towers étaient hautes serait nécessaire pour répertorier toutes les fois où Jay Z a mentionné Michael Jordan au micro.

L’autoproclamé « Mike Jordan of recordin' » s’amuse ici à comparer la concurrence au pire choix de draft de l’histoire du basket-ball (car choisi en 1984 juste avant MJ), puis, dresse un parallèle entre la troisième position de His Airness et le carton de son troisième album, Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, vendu à 5 millions d’exemplaires.

Michael Jackson

La ref’ ? Izzo (H.O.V.A.) qui sample I Want You Back des Jackson 5... et les chœurs de Girls, Girls, Girls 1 & 2 où Michael vient pousser la chansonnette sans être crédité !

Lorsqu'un album convie MJ, le roi des basketteurs, et MJ, le roi de la pop, difficile de lui refuser le statut de classique, non ?

Les Princes de la ville

Sorti dans les salles obscures en 1993, le film de Taylor Hackford (Ray, L’associé du diable…) conte le destin de Cruz, Paco et Miklo, trois cousins originaires du barilllo de Est Los Angeles.

Sincèrement liés mais pourvus de caractères antagonistes, nos « vatos locos » empruntent chacun des chemins de vies fort différents (guerre des gangs, prison, héroïne...).

Fresque de 180 minutes sur la famille, l’honneur, la revanche et le pardon, si Blood In Blood Out (le titre en V.O.) n’est pas le chef-d’œuvre que certains prétendent, il se laisse revoir avec plaisir.

Franck Sinatra

La toute première fois que Jay s’imagine dans la peau du crooneur aux yeux bleus, mais pas la dernière.

Dès 2002, il remet le couvert sur Blueprint 2 en reprenant sans pression son plus gros tube, My Way (qui lui-même reprenait Comme d’habitude de notre Claude François national), puis, en 2009, lui pique le célèbre « Since I made it here, I can make it anywhere » de son hymne New York, New York pour son hymne Empire State of Mind.

Les Fat Boys

Et encore une rime à tiroirs de Jay Z.

Outre le fait de rendre hommage à l’un des groupes de rap les plus populaires des années 80 (deux disques d’or, un disque de platine, une campagne de publicité pour Swatch, une apparition dans Miami Vice...), elle sert de clin d’œil à une réplique de Chris Rock dans Boomerang, une comédie romantique de 1992 avec Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence et Halle Berry.

Richard Pryor

Sans lui, Chris Tucker, Chris Rock et Kevin Hart bosseraient au McDonald’s.

Standupper extrêmement populaire au sein de la communauté afro-américaine dans les années 70/80, entre son énergie et son franc-parler, Jerry Seinfeld le surnommait « le Picasso des humoristes ».

Jay Z fait allusion à l’un des faits divers les plus WTF de sa biographie, quand, en 1980, des passants hallucinés l’ont vu courir en flammes dans les rues de Los Angeles.

Accro à la cocaïne free-base, il avait tenté de mettre fin à ses jours lors d’un accès de démence. Des années plus tard, il est revenu sur l’incident dans un sketch.

La vodka Armadale

Bien avant Ace of Spades, il y a eu Armadale, une vodka écossaise dont le crew Roc-A-Fella était particulièrement friand.

Sauf que bon, Dame Dash n’a très vite pas supporté de leur faire de la pub gratuitement. En 2002 il s’est ainsi porté acquéreur des droits de distribution de la marque en Amérique du Nord.

Le move était à bien des égards visionnaire (aucun rappeur n’avait à l’instant T eu l’idée d’investir dans les spiritueux), peut-être même un peu trop, Armadale n’ayant pas réussi à devenir un Ciroc ou un Belaire avant l’heure.

Biggie

Minute culture générale : avant de retourner dans les bras de Ben Affleck, la divine J.Lo était en ménage avec un certain Alex Rodriguez, alias A-Rod, un ancien baseballeur.

Et avant d’être connu pour être le mec d’avant de J.Lo, Alex Rodriguez avait signé en 2001 le contrat le plus lucratif de l'histoire du sport professionnel en s’engageant pour 10 saisons avec les New York Yankees à hauteur de 252 millions de dollars.

Sinon, et ça n’a pas grand-chose à voir, en dehors des plateaux de tournage, Jaimie Foxx concourt avec Denzel Washington au titre de meilleur imitateur de Jay Z (mais aussi de Mike Tyson, de Pharrell, de Kanye West et de tant d’autres).

Reasonable Doubt

Son tout premier album. Celui qu’il considère comme son meilleur – en 2013, il classait Blueprint deuxième.

Sorti le 25 juin 1996, il ne s’écoule pourtant qu’à 43 000 petits exemplaires en première semaine et connaît toutes les peines du monde à décrocher l’or.

Déçu par ce résultat, Jay réoriente sa musique dès son essai suivant, In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, en se faisant plus accessible... ce qu’il regrettera amèrement par la suite.

Très attaché à « son bébé », Jay Z retournera d’ailleurs le défendre en tournée pour son dixième anniversaire, non sans s’être auparavant frité avec Dame Dash pour en récupérer les droits quand ce dernier a voulu prendre le contrôle de Roc-A-Fella.

Son grand frère Éric

Hustler en culottes courtes, le jeune Shawn C. commence à dealer du crack à 12 ans. A contrario, son frère Eric, 16 ans, préfère s’adonner aux joies de la pipe.

Lorsqu’un jour il le surprend en train de lui voler l’une de ses bagouzes plaquées or, le futur roi de New York saisit son arme et fait feu.

Fort heureusement, les choses ne se sont pas passées comme ça. Non seulement son frangin ne va pas le poursuivre en justice, mais il va en plus s’excuser pour son comportement lorsque Jay lui rend visite à l’hôpital.

Hov’ fait brièvement allusion à cet incident sur You Must Love me en 1997 : « J’ai vu le diable dans tes yeux, t’étais défoncé et pas à la weed/ Déboussolé, j’ai juste fermé les yeux et pressé la détente ».

Le Marcy Projects

Là où tout a commencé pour le fils de Gloria Carter et Adnis Reeves.

Baptisé d’après le nom de l'ancien sénateur, gouverneur et secrétaire d’État William L. Marcy (1786-1857), il se compose de 27 immeubles de six étages (1 705 appartements) construits au sortir de la Seconde guerre mondiale.

Il compte à l’heure actuelle un peu plus de 4 200 habitants.

Le 11 septembre

Excepté la date, existe-t-il un lien entre le Blueprint de Jay Z et la plus grande attaque étrangère jamais perpétrée sur le sol américain ?

Si la concomitance des deux évènements relève bien évidemment du pur hasard, elle n’est cependant pas dénuée d’une forte portée symbolique.

Après quatre albums qui l’ont vu ressasser jusqu’à plus soif son passé de hustler, The Blueprint marque en effet un changement de cap pour Jay-Z, lui qui, désormais trentenaire, se mue véritablement en mogul – fini les histoires de rues et de deals, place aux rimes de notable et aux placements de produits.

Homme d’affaires posant dans le livret une Rolex au poignet et le drapeau US dans la main, il incarne alors on ne peut mieux ce mode de vie que détestent tant Ben Laden et ses sbires (ce capitalisme sous stéroïdes aussi arrogant qu’implacable pour les perdants, la réussite individuelle, le matérialisme à outrance...).

Pas de chance pour eux, quelque deux décennies après les faits, le bilan de ce choc culturel est sans appel : outre le fait qu’à l’instant T Jay Z n’ait aucunement souffert de l’effondrement des tours jumelles (The Blueprint s’est écoulé à près d’un demi-million de copies en première semaine), sa réussite est aujourd’hui telle que son nom est devenu dans le monde entier synonyme du rêve américain.
