Pieces of Her - Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote star in this thriller based on a novel of the same name about a daughter learning about her mother’s dangerous past. (Coming to Netflix on March 4th)
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty - Since this drama about the Showtime era of the Los Angeles Lakers airs on HBO, it cannot be called Showtime. Instead, we get Winning Time. (Coming to HBO on March 6th)
Shining Vale - Courtney Cox and Greg Kinnear star in this horror-comedy about a seemingly haunted house. (Coming to Starz on March 6th)
The Thing About Pam - Renee Zellweger headlines this true-crime limited series. Josh Duhamel and Judy Greer co-star. (Coming to NBC on March 8th)

Julia - The life of Julia Child is coming to television this month. Don’t watch this show on an empty stomach. (Coming to HBO Max on March 31st)
How We Roll - CBS has a new bowling comedy lead by Pete Holmes coming this month. Gray Matters
Tumblr media
Year: 2006
Length: 1h 36min
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Language: English
Director: Sue Kramer
Starring: Heather Graham, Tom Cavanagh, Bridget Moynahan, Molly Shannon, Alan Cumming, Sissy Spacek, Rachel Shelley
Story: Gray (Heather Graham) and Sam (Tom Cavanagh) are siblings and they are very close to each other. They share an apartment, hobbies, every aspect of their lives. But when most people mistake them for a couple, they decide to go on dates and find suitable partners. Sam quickly starts dating Charlie (Bridget Moynahan) and gets engaged to her fast. Gray, who should be happy for her brother, realises she herself is in love with Charlie and comes to the conclusion that she is a lesbian.
Pros:
Romantic comedy: The movie is a romantic comedy and there aren’t enough romantic comedies about sapphic women, but it’s not a very good one.
Coming out: The coming out-part of the story is relatively well done. Gray only has a panic attack when she realises how society treats people who aren’t straight, but she never panics because she doesn’t want to be attracted to women.
Cons:
Incest?: Even though people assuming Gray and Sam are a couple is supposed to be funny, the implications are a bit creepy. Even if siblings are close, it’s still possible to make a distinction between them being related and them being a couple. If it’s not possible for people on the outside to make that distinction, maybe you should rethink your relationship as siblings.
Problematic jokes: Yes, it’s a comedy, and no, that doesn’t excuse horrible jokes being made at the expanse of oppressed groups. Some of the jokes ableist and transphobic.
Quick engagements: Sam and Charlie get engaged after knowing each other for less than 24 hours. They both say it just feels right and they were in love with each other immediately. This feels weird, especially coming from Charlie, who does have undeniable chemistry with Gray and even makes out with her when she’s drunk. It is also a horrible thing to do, considering the main focus of the movie is a lesbian woman, when LGBT people couldn’t get married in the US during that time. In the film, a straight couple marries in Las Vegas after knowing each other for a really short amount of time. Charlie is a bit concerned about the marriage, not because it happens so fast, but because she hasn’t had sex with Sam yet and worries about the size of his penis. This should tell you everything about the quality of this movie.
Pornography: Even though the movie is written and directed by a woman, the scene where Gray and Charlie kiss is like the beginning of every other porn movie made for a male audience. During Charlie’s bridal shower in Las Vegas, which she spends only with Gray, she gets drunk and when they get back to the hotel room, Gray helps her undress and they sit down on the bed and start to make out and immediately moan into each other’s mouths. The kiss is even more horrible when you consider that Gray and Charlie never talk about it again because Charlie doesn’t even remember it happening.
Sexism: The movie is extremely sexist. For example, Gray has a boss who openly stares at women and harasses them with inappropriate jokes, but is never called out for this behaviour. What makes this worse is that the woman he’s harassing, Julia (Rachel Shelley), is a lesbian. However, the movie pretends to be super feminist, especially in the portrayal of Gray’s colleague Carrie (Molly Shannon) who realises she has to accept herself how she is.
No respect for safe spaces: Gray becomes friends with a cab driver (Alan Cummings) who is in love with her but respects her sexual orientation. He even tries to help her find a girlfriend. Gray smuggles him into a lesbian bar, dressed as a woman, when she is told at the door that men aren’t allowed inside.
Homophobia: Even though the film is about a lesbian woman coming to terms with her identity, representation is done really badly. When Gray visits the lesbian bar, she meets Julia there and it’s seen as a plot twist that Julia is a lesbian as well, because she is really feminine (long hair, feminine clothes, …). The cab driver, who, in his costume, looks like a man dressed as a woman, is immediately the object of desire for a butch lesbian. Not only is the whole situation transphobic, it also presupposes that butch lesbians are somehow too stupid to tell the difference between a man and a woman.
Homophobia:  5/10 – There is no overt homophobia in the film, but I, nevertheless, decided on this rating, due to the points discussed above. Moreover, Gray never experiences homophobia – on the contrary, people seem genuinely supportive when she tells them she is a lesbian. Nevertheless, she has a breakdown when she finally accepts she’s a lesbian because she will never be able to have a “normal” life, which is just a really toxic portrayal of what it means to be a lesbian.
Violence: 0/10 – There is no violence against characters due to their sexual orientation.
Ending: As if everything about this movie, the ending is also horrible. Sam and Charlie stay married, even though Charlie is clearly attracted to Gray. Somehow, their marriage works out. Also, the situation with the kiss is never resolved. Gray is in love with Charlie but never talks to her about it for the sake of her brother. Instead, she has sex with Julia and is happy and content with that, resuming the weird relationship she has with her brother, while Charlie cheers them on.
Sexual orientation: This is the main topic of the movie because the whole plot is about Gray discovering her sexual orientation. Her psychologist (Sissy Spacek) makes up some weird theory that she isn’t a lesbian but is only jealous of Charlie for taking her brother away from her and that’s the reason why Gray wanted to sabotage the marriage. Gray, however, seems happy once she’s fully accepted who she is and immediately starts dating women.
