As of KH III, he tries his best to atone for his actions and actively strives to set things right for Sora and his friends proving that he is introspective and willing to change. I wholeheartedly believe that Even is currently the most eligible bachelor in the series in a way that most fanon interpretations fail to comprehend.” I told you, those who like him really like him. 6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics? This fic is my nearest and dearest because it was the first KH fic I wrote and the first fanfic I'd written in years. It pulled me out of a writer's block that had lasted close to 10 years, and it exploded my imagination and creativity in the best possible way! Not to mention, I'm just so in love with their relationship and how it progressed in this fic. And, come on, literal sex god Tomoe? I swoon 😝

11: What do you like best about this fic? Honestly, the arranged marriage trope and the strangers to lovers side of things. Part 1 is pretty much my favorite because they're still sizing each other up and still at odds with each other. I really loved how they explored the physical side of their relationship before the emotional side heehee. And then watching them blossom into a true romance from that! 🥰 Plus part 1 was pretty fun because it was before all the darkness and seriousness came into play. Sure, there were hints of their baggage and the damage that'd been done to them, but it got real in part 2 and beyond.

15: What did you learn from writing this fic? That there's a reason stories (and, for that matter, series) are typically shorter. The longer you go, the more you risk inconsistencies and fucking up your timeline or backtracking character development in a way that's not natural or realistic (especially because I changed their character development goal posts from the original draft). It's hard for me to keep things straight, even with my multiple whiteboards and documents. There's just SO much material and it's all so dense that it's hard to keep track of. There were too many subplots (though I love them) and the pacing can elicit some impatience. But, really, I never meant for it to be digestible; I wrote the universe out as long as I felt like writing it out until I ran out of steam, and that's when I cut it off. AM was a coping mechanism, and the AM universe was a playground. It was only because it was already done that I decided to share it with other people too.

Another thing I learned is that there's a lot of prickliness around Nanami when she's immature lol. 🤭 I was honestly reallyyyy surprised by that, because I found her shenanigans to be funny at times, and I pitied her when others wanted to throw her out a window! I suppose I related to that side of her because I was quite insufferable and unsocialized when I was her age. 😁 I will admit that I made some adjustments in moving up her character development because of that reception. It had always been in the cards, but I didn't want her to be that painful to read.

Musing About the Modern

I was musing the other day about “Modern AU’s” because I have this morbid fascination. Morbid because ultimately, they are everything I can’t personally stomach about with fan content. I’m very by the numbers with my fic because I need it to be an extension of the fantastical world of origin or at least match it in some equally engaging scenario. I don’t particularly like the mundane invading my fantasy.

But fantasy invading my mundane is a very different story. 

My bias is modern, relatable settings getting assaulted by a fantastical/supernatural world. So I actually don’t mind a little reversal in a Modern AU as long as there is a relationship between these two forces. It’s extremely cathartic and self-indulgent despite it’s cliche. It’s a perfect metaphor.

My KH fic Ivory Wall definitely invokes this concept. Though you might argue I’m playing the scenario straight within the lore of the series so the AU has more to do with timeline divergences than any law breaking. I have a fish out of water scenario and I use a supporting cast to get this mundane/supernatural relationship fleshed out. There’s a little meta fun of course which is like weird on top of weird, which I find engaging.

I often find myself clicking on Highschool AU’s/Modern AU’s in a ton of stuff because there is a promise of supernatural elements. Nothing that would surprise me since it would simply be a reversal of the source material but it would have to take a front seat. 

There’s a Danny Phantom fic that I adore called ‘C’est La Vie” which plays out as a normal. romcom movie premise AU with a Las Vegas marriage which I’m still baffled that I picked up-- it’s later revealed that basically the shows premise is happening in the background and when it comes crashing in, it hits hard. Fantasy assaulting the mundane. 

I’ve been searching for some LoZ equivalent lately. A challenging feat because I find the maturity level of Zelda fic works to be rather young, meaning Modern Au’s are more self-indulgent high school dramas as opposed to real exploration of setting and abstract themes. But with a series about endless cycles the setting is prime for fics to play with the world in a modern sense without sacrificing the mystique of supernatural/destiny. I’m always a little caught with the series if I’d want to finagle a Modern Setting from the foundation of an advanced Hyrule with tech and custom equivalents... or if I would want to draw out a world even more identical to our own, only to be encroached upon by the supernatural. 

I guess I should state that I’ve been seriously musing upon a LoZ ‘modern au/ assaulted by a fantasy’ style story.....You know what they say about what to do when you look for a story that’s not there....

Forgive me for this, but what are your thoughts about Donald/Daisy? My knowledge of Disney only extends to KH, both versions of Ducktales, and Three Caballeros, so I don’t recognize 98% of the duck characters. I don’t know how to obtain the Duck comics in the States in English, though I’ve always wanted to read them.

daisy huh... my opinions of her vary from “sure” to “ew” I guess. it largely depends on the source material... I feel in KH she is such a non character... even more so than usual. well in KH female characters tend to not be written great and Minnie and Daisy are really shoved to the side to the point it’s not even bad writing it’s no writing at all ??? like she is never seen interacting with Donald apart from uh I think the end of KH1 where she threatens and chase him? which is. yeah sure

iirc she didn’t show up in og DT... new DT is a very superficial attempt at “fixing” her but no matter how well-intentioned the writers are, inserting Daisy so late into the story AND as Donald’s love interest is not great and that fixing attempt is bound to fail I think. I have a lot of thoughts about that episode and I’m not going to go into details unprompted (literally WHO wants my ducktales rants?) but it sure makes me smile seeing people going HEALTHY DONDAISY!!! DAISY IS FIXED!!! XD uwu lol.. but future will tell...... maybe my speculations will be wrong and I sincerely hope they are. but yeah as of now there isn’t much material about them and I don’t like what we got so far

in lot3c dondaisy is a central part of the story and hm. I wouldn’t mind Daisy being an obstacle to donald/straight up antagonistic if this didn’t fit in a misogynistic tradition of the Nagging Girlfriend Trope and I think a lot of writers can’t imagine a Daisy who isn’t that, sadly. It’s a shame especially in the Donald Duck’s Found Family Go On Funny Adventures All Around The (Supernatural) World show... I think Donald being torn between a trivial, normal, quiet lifestyle and an adventurous thrilling one is nothing new and it’s a theme that shows up in a lot of others media, be it comics or animation (It’s a running gag in Mickey Mouse2013 and Ducktales2017 deals with this horribly, but it’s really a long time thing in comic books too), and I usually like it! but instead of being an internal conflict, in LOT3C it’s symbolized by Daisy who works as an anchor into the “real world” and keeps pulling Donald back to it when frankly I’d rather see him (even begrudgingly) adventuring with his amigos. And I don’t mean that as a dumb “grrr daisy in the way of my cabs shipping” way, because I do think Xandra and April/May/June have great chemistry with Donald... if Daisy is an anchor into the real world, I believe AMJ is more of a bridge between reality and fantasy, and as such they are a lot more fun and a lot less frustrating. I do think you could have the whole thing with Donald having one foot into reality and one foot into the supernatural just in his relationship with Xandra. In short I think it’s def a case of writers wanting or having to put Daisy in but not being able to write her beyond being Donald’s annoying girlfriend and it’s a shame.

And if you think about it, if you remove Daisy’s Annoying Girlfriend status, literally who is she? She’s a character that  was initially written as a prize for Donald to win ; initially it’s the nephews who gets in his way, then Daisy herself, then Gladstone, etc etc. It has been a long tradition both in comics and animations for decades and no one up until recently bothered to give her something else. Historically there have been attempts but they are inconsistent, loosely defined, and most importantly always relate to being THE GIRL. She writes a diary that chronicles her Woman Problems such as her boyfriend being too ugly so she’s ashamed to go out with him ; or being jealous and petty about her female friends, etc... she has her friends over at the Women Club which is sometimes a charity, sometimes a feminist club, and most of the time a place where they throw girly parties where Donald has to be dragged in against his will... she has a superhero identity that revolves around “being a feminist” but really is about SHOWING THE DUDES WHO’S THE MOST CAPABLE SEX, and all in all her gags revolve around “haha women are so ridiculous” and “marriage is a prison”  So yeah, for a long time Daisy was built as a character that is just one misogynistic trope after the other and don’t have much of a direction, but also she’s historically known as Donald’s Girlfriend so somehow she has to be with him by mandate and my impression is that most writers are stuck with her and have no idea what to do with her... she has no life outside of Donald or any main character really so if she were to break up with him she’d have no reason to hang out with any of them. She could end up with Gladstone? but what even is the Daisy/Gladstone relationship in itself if it doesn’t revolve around Donald? Literally every other female characters have goals and something for themselves...Grandma has her farm and is a caring, support character for about everyone ; Brigitta is a skilled businesswoman who wants to end up with Scrooge ; Dickie is a teen and a reporter, etc etc. Daisy is Donald’s girlfriend and she makes his life harder. ok, which is a goal I guess ! but not a great one for a character sold as one of the Good Ones... and modern stories making her sweeter to Donald make for cute panels but it’s just removing one of her traits without giving her any new ones...

What’s sad is that in more modern times there have BEEN attempts at fleshing out Daisy- she’s a novelist, she’s a reporter, she works for Scrooge, she’s into fashion, she has AMJ, etc. Some writers are well aware of the Daisy Problem and it’s even adressed...

...so there is that conscious effort to flesh her out, but these efforts are so far too isolated and nothing tends to stick out much... and I mean, it’s difficult to almost completely rewrite a character when she has decades of history behind her already. But the efforts are here and I salute them... even though there are more or less well executed..I like MM13′s Daisy for her strong personality and her working independently from Donald - I think having her do stuff with Minnie, Clarabelle, and even being friends with Mickey etc helps a LOT (though this series is not free from Donald feeling stuck in his relationship with Daisy.. but it’s still miles better imo than their usual portrayal) 

so yeah I know that ask was originally about DonDaisy only but I think in order to know how I feel about them it’s.. good to know about how I feel about Daisy lol. In general I think they are stuck together by mandate when Daisy doesn’t have much to offer to Donald beyond Pain and Donald has better chemistry with literally. every other character ever. sorry if you didn’t ask about this wall of text lol but if you don’t know much about Daisy I guess here’s an overview of the character...

oh also. Daisy and Donald are cute in the parks. Daisy is that attention loving diva and Donald just fawns over her it’s really cute... her being fashion buddies with Minnie is cute.. nghnng though female characters being linked to fashion is.. sigh I will not go into another rambling I save this for another ask lol

Riku’s Sacrifice | The Final World

They say once is chance, twice is coincidence, three times is a pattern... and I think we’ve found one hell of a pattern that links Riku directly with the Final World and reinforces the significance of his sacrifice.

Previously @databoy-reekoo had noticed some striking similarities between Riku’s sacrifice scene, and the logo animation for the Final World (If you haven’t seen that post, please take a look at it before reading this one: x)

The sound effects are nearly identical, save for the metallic sound of the keyblade strike and some surface sounds (compare the logo sounds: x -to the original audio of the sacrifice scene: x ). 

The visuals also hit the same beats- the blast of light that resembles the light coming out of Riku’s keyblade as he protects Sora from the demon tide, and the clouds rushing towards the viewer in a way that creates a tunnel-like effect very similar to the heartless rushing past. 

But maybe you aren’t convinced yet that the logo animation is meant to be a reference to Riku’s sacrifice.  What if I told you there’s more...that the logo animation is actually Riku’s sacrifice from beginning to end from Sora’s perspective, translated into a more symbolic replay of it.

And there’s one big, huge giveaway that makes me certain of this.

The pace of the footsteps, the pause before the blast of light and then the clouds rushing towards the camera as in a time-lapse...it all lines up perfectly.  And to demonstrate even further that it’s from Sora’s perspective, compare the angle of the camera in relation to the ground and horizon line:

A near perfect match.

So we have the footsteps- Riku’s footsteps- and the blast of light- Riku’s light- that match.  But there’s even more reason to believe that the clouds are also part of the replay, beyond just the visual similarities.

Normally in KH openings, water/the ocean is always used to symbolize darkness.  Characters that fall to darkness are shown submerged- like Riku in KH1 or Aqua in Fragmentary Passage.  But in KH3′s opening, that symbolism was nowhere to be seen.  Instead, smoke/clouds were used extensively to symbolize the darkness.

At the end of the OP Sora stands alone under a dark and stormy looking sky.  Then his friends start appearing and this stormy sky is transformed into a cloudy, but bright sky...and finally at the end, there are no more clouds at all.

So, in the logo animation that was already a symbolic representation of Riku’s sacrifice, it makes perfect sense to use the symbol for darkness established at the beginning of the game to represent the waves of heartless rushing past Sora and Riku. (I mentioned this on Databoy-Reekoo’s post too, but the clouds might also be in a reverse time-lapse, a reference to the fact that time is rewound after Riku’s sacrifice, showing that he was also instrumental in making that possible in the first place)

During this symbolic replay of Riku’s sacrifice, we also see these white structures growing out of the water:

Since everything else in this animation has had some underlying meaning, this shouldn’t be disregarded as just a reference to the structures we collect the pieces of Sora on a little later.  As it turns out, the entire structure just so happens to be made of a very symbolically significant material; salt.

If you know what salt/halite crystals look like, it’s recognizable almost immediately. They are cube shaped, sometimes growing in more orderly cube shapes (called “hopper crystals”) and other times more haphazardly. We see both in the Final World.

There are even some small cube shaped platforms that look exactly like salt crystals under a microscope:

They could have chosen any number of materials and achieved a similar aesthetic.  So, why salt?  Generally speaking, salt has been a common symbol for purity, permanence (due to its preservation qualities), loyalty, and fidelity.  But it goes...deeper than that (you might wanna sit down for this haha).  Keep in mind that in the logo animation, the structures of salt are growing during Riku’s sacrifice.

Friendship:

“Salt was widely and variably used as a symbol and sacred sign in ancient Israel Numbers 18:19 and 2 Chronicles 13:5 illustrate salt as a covenant of friendship”.- x

“The Arabic expression, “There is salt between us” and “He has eaten of my salt,” both represent the cementing of a friendship.” - x

Promises and Oaths:

In ancient times the Covenant of Salt was a common way of sealing an agreement or promise between two people or parties.  Because of this, salt and promises are very closely associated.

“Once you gave your word on a deal, you secured it by taking some salt out of your little salt pouch and putting it into the pouch of the person you were making the deal with. You could break your word whenever you wanted–you simply had to remove your exact grains of salt from his bag of salt. Impossible. Your word was your Word. A vow was a vow. No breaking it.”

“To some, the salt covenant was much more than a covenant of friendship. It is an irrevocable pledge and promise of fidelity. Those who have taken salt together would rather die before they would break their covenant.”

“Today in many Arab cultures, if two men partake of salt together they are sworn to protect one another.”

The Covenant of Salt also has roots in the Bible, as God is said to have made a “covenant of salt” with the Aaronic priesthood and the Davidic kings of Israel:

“According to the New Oxford Annotated Bible, "of salt" most likely means that the covenant is "a perpetual covenant, because of the use of salt as a preservative" x

A perpetual covenant...and eternal oath.

Marriage:

With such deep roots in the idea of eternal oaths it’s no surprise then that the Covenant of Salt is also fairly common in wedding ceremonies, as a permanent sealing of commitment to one another. 

“This is a bond that can not be broken and is a symbol of an unbreakable promise of love.” x

Remember how Chikai is a song about marriage and an eternal oath?  Funny how that works, huh.

Alright, so bringing this back around, why would Nomura use something so symbolically loaded and associate it with Riku’s sacrifice?  His sacrifice demonstrated his incredible love for Sora, but...what if it’s more than that?  Maybe...just maybe, Riku fulfilled a forgotten promise he had made long ago- a promise to protect Sora (Theory Link: x) - or is “remaking” it.  Remember this poem from the end of Riku’s story in Chain of Memories?

GBA CoM version:

Walking this road without you to remake forgotten promises and meet you at road’s end.

Re:CoM version:

Beyond the path without you is a forgotten promise to keep.

We may have walked side by side, but now we go on back to back.

And though our paths may not cross, all paths are connected somewhere.

When I arrive at where you are, we may not appear to be as we were…

But we’ll make another promise to keep

The “road” or “path” refers to the road to dawn that Riku chose at the end of CoM.  In KH3, Riku’s Way to Dawn keyblade breaks, signifying that he has reached the end of that path, reached dawn (literally, the break of dawn hah).  And according to these poems, at road’s end another promise is to be made.  A promise for what, exactly, I don’t know.  But if the symbolism of salt is any indication, it’s an oath of love and devotion that can’t be broken.

The Very Dumb Academics AU series (sixthlight) - TOG, 13K - I super love this AU! I'm highlighting a few of my fave lines that made me laugh a LOT.

I feel that the things he says aren’t simply the cheap lines that villains always spout, but that his words are, in a way, about the essence of things. When he says, “a meaningless effort. One who knows nothing can understand nothing,” that is my favorite line from KHI. Correct! For me personally, there is a lot about Ansem that I can empathize with. – Nomura

I cannot praise Ansem (Xehanort’s Heartless) from the original KH enough. In terms of his design, personality and motivations, he’s the perfect marriage of Disney and FF villainy, is a very memorable final boss for the game, and in the English dub his material is elevated even further by a legendary vocal performance from Billy Zane.

However, the fact that Nomura empathized and identified with Ansem from the beginning shows just why he was the wrong person to keep as the director long-term, especially when free of restraints. Because scarily enough, he IS like Ansem - cold, unfeeling, pretentious, absorbed by his own hubris to the point of delusion, and WRONG.

Kingdom Hearts Marriage Material Tournament

Who HASN'T seen at least one character in Kingdom Hearts and gone 'I want them in my life. I want to show them how wonderful they are, and how much I adore them, and how good life can get when you're spending it with someone you love. I want to fold laundry with them and grocery shop with them and do taxes with them. I want to go on little dates with them. Maybe I even want to have kids with them, or help them take care of their children. I want to be a part of their family.'?

Okay well if you haven't, get thinking. This tournament is all about that sentiment. Who is the ultimate Kingdom Hearts waifu(gender neutral)? And why is it Terra?
