Nothing Feels Better Than This
I was just chilling out, bored, when all of a sudden I got hit with a sudden bolt of inspiration for an Ellabby oneshot!
This one's based on my HCs of them living together post-DC1 finale. I dunno how this will age in the coming finale and All-Stars, but I hope you guys, gals and non-binary pals enjoy it all the same.
--
For a while now, Gabby, who now lived with Ellie, had worked two volunteer jobs – one at an animal shelter and one at a florist’s. And every day when she was out, Ellie would always be patiently awaiting her girlfriend’s return from one of her jobs, ready to give her girlfriend a warm welcome back.
And it was on one of these days, a few weeks into Gabby’s working life, that something happened that would once again reaffirm their never-ending love for one another…
...
It was a lovely springtime day. Having returned home from her florist shift, Gabby walked into the girls' bedroom, where she saw a tired-looking Ellie collapsed onto their bed. "Hey, Ellie-kins," she chirped, "I'm home!"
Ellie jerked up startled, and turned to see her girlfriend waving cheerfully to her. "Oh, Gabby-bear!" she responded in joy, "Welcome home!" She ran over to hug her girlfriend, who returned the hug while tenderly nuzzling her cheeks up with hers. Playfully, Ellie pushed her nose into Gabby's neck, breathing deeply and getting Gabby squealing with laughter, before pulling back and happily sighing, “Ahhh, you always smell so nice when you come back from the florist’s!”
“Ellieee!” giggled the nature-lover, “You always think I smell nice!”
After pulling back, Ellie told the brunette, "Hold on, I have something for you-"
"Again?" stammered the Tree Hugger in astonishment. "Ellie, it feels like you have something for me EVERY time I come home from my jobs. Besides, you look tired-”
“Hey, don’t worry yourself about me,” Ellie told her, “I’m fine, just had a late night.”
“Yeah, I can tell,” Gabby mumbled, a little uneasily. Indeed, there were some notable dark rings underneath the redhead’s eyes, and her hair looked rather messed up. A worrisome thought soon came into the brunette’s mind…
Ellie didn’t seem to notice Gabby’s worries – she simply headed to the girls’ bedside table and picked up a tiny box with a lavender-colored candle in it. With a brief yawn, the freckled one quickly walked over to her girlfriend and gave her the box. “I went to Bath and Body Works while you were hanging out with Tom last night and got you this candle,” she told her, stroking the brunette’s cheek, “It’s hyacinth-scented!”
“Aww, Ellie!” cooed Gabby, hugging her beloved workaholic, “You’re the best!”
“You’re…” The redhead yawned again, catching Gabby’s concern, “…welcome. I know you love the smell of hyacinths, and I thought you’d love this.”
“I do,” giggled the brunette, before her tone turned a bit serious, “But…can we talk?”
The Minimum Wage Worker flinched a little. Gabby didn’t usually get this serious – she was usually so upbeat and happy and playful. But Ellie was always willing to hear the brunette out if something was bugging her. “Sure,” she muttered, a little nervous.
The animal-lover led Ellie to their bed, and both girls sat down together, at which point Gabby gently put a hand on one of Ellie’s knees.
“Ellie…when you said you had a late night, what do you mean?” she inquired, looking into the blue eyes of her lover.
“Oh,” Ellie muttered, rubbing her arm, “I was just getting the scented candle during the nighttime sales. Sorry about how I look...it took ages. The crowds were murder and I didn't get home until like five minutes before you. The holiday season is getting close, after all.”
Memories came to Gabby's mind of how she returned home last night to find an exhausted Ellie already waiting for her in bed. She'd been concerned, but it wasn't until now that she realized just how true her worries were.
“Ellie…you’ve done this pretty much every day recently, and I’m worried,” Gabby told her girlfriend, grabbing her shoulders, “I’ve noticed you’ve been tired a LOT lately.” She put a hand on one of Ellie’s cheeks, “And all this, just so you can have gifts ready for me every time I come home?”
The redhead shivered a little, worried she’d disappointed her girlfriend. “Gabby…” she spoke up, “I do this every day because…I love you, with all of my heart. And I want you to be reminded of that every day. I just love seeing you happy, and-”
“Ellie,” the brunette now chuckled a little, “I know you love me! You don’t need to have bouquets of flowers or stuffed animals or scented candles or whatever else waiting for me at home to remind me of that!” She took her girlfriend’s hands, “I know you love me because even if I can be kinda obnoxious and overwhelming, you still stick by me. I know you love me because you tell me all the time how much I mean to you. I know you love me because even all this time after Disventure Camp, you’re still here with me.”
“Of course I am,” Ellie responded tenderly, intertwining her fingers with Gabby’s own, “I’m glad I have you in my life. Every day, you’re always bringing me joy just by being your adorable self. Anyone like Grett or Nick who couldn’t see just how much of a sweet, incredible person you are…those people need glasses.” She chuckled a little, before leaning in close and nuzzling Gabby’s cheek, “I love you so much, and I always will, my sweet Nature Princess.”
Gabby wrapped her arms around her girlfriend in a comforting hug, “And I love you too, my Sunset Angel.” She briefly pulled back a moment, rubbing one of Ellie’s cheeks with her hand, “And just like you show your love to me every day, I’ll show my love to you too. I don’t need you to go out every day to get me gifts. I mean, once in a while is fine, but don’t drive yourself to exhaustion just to get me a scented candle every day.”
“You’re sure about that?” the redhead responded, rubbing the back of her head bashfully.
“Of course I am,” the brunette reassured, “Sure, I love getting gifts from you, but I don’t need them.” She leaned in and kissed her girlfriend upon her freckled cheek, “Besides, I already have you. What else could I possibly need?”
“Aww, Gabby!” purred the workaholic, “You really are the sweetest, you know that?”
“There, you see?” the nature lover responded, playfully booping Ellie’s nose with her finger, getting her giggling, “Of course I know you love me when you say stuff like that!”
“Okay, point taken,” chortled the Minimum Wage Worker, “I won’t over-exert myself to get you some scented candles anymore, it’s a promise.” She yawned again, “Let’s just stay in and cuddle for tonight, okay? We’ll go bird-watching tomorrow.”
“Aw, Ellie-kins,” Gabby sighed happily, “Of course we can, sweetie. You deserve a cozy night in.”
“Thank you, Gabby-bear,” spoke the older girl in gratitude, “Thank you so much…for everything.”
And so, the two girls curled up in bed together, underneath the warmth of their blanket and the soothing feeling of one another’s arms around one another’s bodies. Their minds, formerly clouded with worries, were now filled with happy thoughts of one another, and all the time they spent together each and every day. They both knew how deeply they were loved – and they would treasure that feeling for the decades to come.
For Ellie and Gabby, nothing felt better than this.
