Why so many posts about Alice being sad over Sam? Why aren't there more posts about Sam being happy with Celia?

In my opinion, Bonzo did nothing wrong and does not deserve the hate he is getting. Maybe he did violently murder multiple people, but that's just cause he is a silly little guy. His haters are unjustified and spreading misinformation. We as a fandom need to stop Bonzo hate

I'm not very good with theory crafting, but the latest tmagp episode kinda reminded me of "rolling with it". The themes of luck and misfortune, they are kinda similar.
Not thinking about it also reminds me of taking notes, in a way that something good requires a sacrifice.
Also about that Gwen and Lena conversation?? The wheel??? The balance??? I'm sorry, Is OIAR pulling a Robert Smirke????
Anyway, great episode. Really enjoyed that one

tmagp 13 relisten notes!!
there are spoilers for episode 13 below the cut!
celia:
- admits to sam that she asked alice for advice and general information about him. this implies she has a pretty friendly relationship with alice (evidenced by alice buying her a mocha) and seems relatively unthreatened by her past with sam so far.
- "no one, im mysterious" -> evidence for her not being from this dimension, if no one can give a lot of information about her
- reveals jack is her baby! (not followed by a glitch)
- says the past couple years "since the move" (between dimensions?) were weird for her
- believes the incidents they work with are real, and im certain shes in the same boat as the audience rn, trying to categorize them with background knowledge that isnt accurate anymore
sam:
- easy to make blush, doesnt know how cute he is, is an overachiever, obsessive, a but repressed, nosy, kind of a recluse, and very easy to wind up
- gifted kid syndrome poster child; he seems to view being turned away by the magnus institute as the beginning of his rejection streak (not admitted to oxford, didnt get first, got fired from his legal firm). i think this will be a major point in his motivations and a fear of rejection and need for validation is going to drive him to receive the greatness he wants (and believes he has earned). i can already see a corruption arc brewing for him, poor thing
- did NOT tell celia about his experiences in the institute or what his "incident" was (referring to lena's interview where she asked him what the worst thing he's seen/experienced was). this isnt super sketchy considering its a first date, but is interesting since he was the one who wanted "all the baggage" out early
- he doesn't want to accept that the incidents are real, but i think he does believe in them. he brought the topic up to celia and has asked alice about it before too, so he may be aware that the incidents are real, but is unwilling to fully conceptualize what that means for himself and his world view
- says that alice doesnt love the idea of him seeing celia, which means he may have picked up on her feelings for him
gwen:
- feels guilty over instigating the mr.bonzo incident -> whats really interesting is that she doesnt threaten to quit or not be involved, she accepts that she gas another email to look through and another external to interact with, but it seems to upset her
- she asks lena why this (externals and mr bonzo murder) is happening, implying that she can stomach the work if its for a reason
lena:
- gives gwen the ABCs of genre-awareness:
- this dimension also has "opposing forces- most of them meaning to be harmful.
- these "forces" need to be "balanced" and controlled in order to maintain order in the world/system -> still working off of a smirke-esque theory that retaining balance will keep the world secure. i dont know if she means balance between forces of good and evil or forces in the supernatural sense
- says the OIAR is managing the bad guys, as in monitoring their actions and directing externals to "balance" things
alice:
- actually offended that sam doesnt want to share information with her and isnt having a good time knowing sam and celia are seeing each other
- tells sam "he cant prove anything" about the cases being real, but doesnt tell him hes wrong
- i would fling myself from a sky scraper for you, miss dyer, but please never say bussin or fire again
- "stop trying to make an impact" -> the more she tells sam to cut the x-files shit out, the more she stops protesting his suspicions. her scolding has gone from "nothing is going on, chill out" to "sure, theres a conspiracy, but we are paid to ignore it"
-
alice/sam's past:
- dated at uni, previously stated they were together for several years. it seems to have been a decent split since they stayed in contact afterward.
- sam was there for her when her parents died, but lost contact after
- she contacted him w the OIAR job details after he made an exceptionally pathetic vague post
incident:
- centered around gambling and self harm to achieve success- this draws ties to episode 2 (self harm) and episode 9 (luck). i expect this is more aligned with ep 9, as the self harm seems to be in the interest of changing his odds/luck, and the incident is primarily about gaining external success, not physical change. though, ep 2 could be a personal experience with ink5oul that is not representative with their "force"
- the narrator of this statement was quick to actively sacrifice his own well being to achieve better luck, which is a pretty stark contrast to other people who looked to harm other people in their own interest (violin guy and dice guy, i forgot their names sorry!!)
- zorro trader may be a reoccurring organization in relation to gambling
- the narrators options for his debt were to either pay it back or have a personal adjustment, once he completes the voicemail he is transferred to the adjustments apartment, which was not an option on the original call log and something he did not request
- he is promptly adjusted :)
- i think this could be related to the theme of keeping balance, since the incident narrator claims it isnt wrong to play with the loophole, and it ends with him getting what he owes, which is a nice connection to lena's explanation of the OIAR's purpose
glitches/lies:
- "im happy you're happy", alice (she is not happy that sam is with celia!!)
extra comments:
- i really didnt expect an explanation of the OIAR and its position in this so early, and im surprised lena was the one to reveal it. this exposes that shes pretty open with the staff she feels are on a need-to-know basis, and it also changes my expectations for how we'll come across a big reveal in this series, since information is being given in a more open way
- i think alice and celia definitely know something but in opposing ways- acting as foils to each other with sam (information seeker) in the middle. celia knows about how the fears work in the tma dimension, and alice knows why and what the OIAR are really doing- together, they solve the puzzle that sam is trying to piece together.

i feel like the "benevolent" part lena was talking about wasn't about entities, but avatars. at this point, gwen hasn't really met any of the entities, so it'd make more sense if she was talking about the creatures like bonzo.
this would be pretty in line with what we know, where some avatars still have free will or some degree of control. though, i do definitely agree there are more entities than just the fears here. i just personally don't think the fears are either benevolent or malevolent, they're just hungry.

okay if this ep is abt someone having clairvoyance I may perish

A BABY???? WHAT DO YOU MEAN BABY????
oh gifted kid burnout
oh you're pretty sure they're real huh? just pretty sure?
oh gwen don't go down the guilt spiral that doesn't work well for anyone
oh my god they're "keeping the balance"
OOOO WHOS THE OTHER EXTERNAL
I hope it's needles or ink5oul
btw WHERE TF IS COLIN I WANT TO SEE MY BOY
horror in the form of a call center message. that's crazy as hell.
investing is truly the scariest horror out there
ngl listening to a finance bro bitching and moaning is my actual person hell
lots of self mutilation themes in tmagp huh. it's intriguing.
says something about the harm you can do to others vs the harm you can do to yourself
like I feel as though tma was more directly people causing other people harm. but tmagp has more often been people being compelled to do things that cause themselves harm.
the switch back to the robo voice was jarring
WHAT THE FUCK???? WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?
sam what in the hell are you talking about
"stop trying to make an impact" yeesh
there wasn't much in this ep outside of interpersonal stuff but man
celia having a CHILD threw me. I feel like it makes the stakes a million times higher.
but yeah that's it.

THEY AREN'T THE FEARS ANYMORE!! THEY'RE DESIRES
(SPOILERS for TMA, and all of TMAGP episodes so far)
Okay, here me out
Tmagp1: Darla wants to hear Arthur's voice again. She even says: "I just couldn’t face the thought of the rest of my life never hearing him again, I had to try" and later on she even says: "But I had to know, so I went to the cemetery."
Tmagp1: RedCanary wants to know about the Magnus Institute. They want to know why it's listed under 'cleared' when there's no evidence of it. Hence why they go and explore it.
Tmagp2: Daria wants that absolute perfection. She wants to change who she is and get out of that dark place. When she talks about the thing that she felt was missing, she says, "... and that’s when I decide I need a tattoo. I had a couple already – just little things on my shin and my wrist – but I decided I needed something big. Something that really changed my look." She also mentions when talking about Ink5oul that "they just kept pressing me about my life, about why I wanted the ink" instead of asking what design she wanted. And when she got the tattoo she describes herself as now being, "Someone I wanted to know more about." Afterwards she even says how "For the first time ever [she] wanted to attempt a self-portrait. Something real and physical, [she] wanted to feel the brushes in my hands and the oil on [her] fingertips." I think a lot of her statement is about her desire and impulsive need for that perfection and that wholeness that she has been aspiring to for her whole life.
Tmagp3: Samuel wants to stay hidden. He wants and he "need[s] to get up, get out of here for treatment." He wants to get better and most of his delirious thoughts are the things that he wants, or feels like he needs. E.g. "I so much want to see it [the sun] again. This night seems endless. I want to be warm again. I am terribly afraid. Thank god for Maddie. I need to treat her better."; "I just need to rest."; "I need to be careful or we’ll drift apart." And then obviously as the narrative continues, Samuel wants to grow and 'put down roots'.
Tmagp4: The narrator wants to be revered and accepted into the Royal Court Orchestra of the Palatinate. He wants to show off and impress. The violin "was a creature with needs and purpose of its own. The needs were simple enough. Blood. Flesh." It has these needs and desires.
So far, I'm interpreting it to be that everything so far can be interpreted as a desire of sorts, varying in the strength and intensity of it. Obviously, fear is still a big part of it all, because if you want something so badly, aren't you afraid of it being stolen from you? Of it being out of your grasp? Of it being unachievable or impossible in some capacity? Of it being a lie?
Even Sam wants to find out more. He wants to know the why and the reason for things. Gwen wants Lena's job. Collin wants to fix all these bugs and keep Freddie running. Alice wants to just get on with it because she found out that wanting to know the 'why' of things is dangerous.
I think that somehow when the Web took all the Fears into a different universe, they morphed into something else. Or they changed to fit what was the most prevalent thing in that universe, because after all, everyone wants something, even if it's something small and inconsequential. Life and aspects of it has always been characterised by that desire for something. Like people wanting food, shelter, safety, love, warmth, happiness, etc. And I think since the Web was so intwined with Jon and Martin, it absorbed some of their emotions when it found its way into this new world, because after all Jon and Martin wanted to stop Jonah/Elias, to stop the apocalypse, to destroy the Panopticon, to be safe, and they wanted each other. I think the wanting and fear of things are really entwined in it all, though this could be absolute bullshit haha

as much as i LOVE all the multi-layered tmagp statements where you have to think about who is reading out which statement, and how it plays into the metaplot and everything going on, i’ve missed statements about it unhinged lil guys terrorising people for fun. like yes creature made entirely of sharp needles stab a guy and call the cops to feed off their fears. slay

Y'all are saying my boy Sam's gonna get traumatized and he doesn't know what he's really getting into. I'm here to counter that. My guys gonna Joshua Gillespie the OIAR. He's just gonna nope out of the horrors, just you wait. He's gonna be that one statement giver who stepped out of the spiral cuz he was hungry. I believe in Sam Khalid's preservation skills. I'm his number one supporter.

The interesting thing about tmagp episode 9 is that, from one perspective, it's about a pair of dice that kill you if you roll a crit fail. And in TMA that would be very End-coded. Games of chance were End-coded, and death is obviously The End. Open and shut case.
Except it's not, here. The statement giver had never seen anyone roll a 2 before he ran into Gary in that coffee shop, even after thousands of rolls. That's not an End artifact. Those dice are going out of their way not to kill anyone, save those who try to part with them.
The compulsion to roll feels like the Web, but is it? Certainly games of chance can become addicting, but I don't think that's the whole story. The Web is about the fear of the loss of control, yes, but it's also about something else controlling you instead. Here that something else is an embodiment of "random" chance - although again, it's not properly-random, not even pseudorandom. I have thoughts on that but they're best addressed further on.
Weirdly, of all the manifestations of Fear from TMA, this statement seems most akin to Jude Perry's - rolling the dice with other people's lives and fortunes, for the thrill of sometimes devastating them.
Which brings me back to the possibility of AU Fears.
In the Protocolverse, why shouldn't there be a Fear associated with chance and luck and fate and misfortune that happens for no good reason? A fear of lacking control and losing everything, without anyone else necessarily having that control.
This is where the way the dice are rigged becomes possibly meaningful. Their outcomes aren't random - they're what humans expect random to look like. They operate according to the gambler's fallacy, where the longer a chain of bad luck you have the more you're due for a good roll, and vice versa. Snake eyes aren't just a normal outcome of the 1-in-36 chance of rolling 2d6 - they're reserved for when someone is cursed with truly rotten luck. Notably that isn't true of boxcars: those just happen sometimes, without prerequisite.
Logically, a Fear of Misfortune wouldn't operate on the actual rules of probability, would it? It would be shaped by the superstitions of those that feared it.
(Also, I hope this statement puts the "they're not fears they're desires!" theory to bed. This guy didn't want the dice, and didn't especially want to roll them, but seemed compelled to anyway.)

Unpopular opinion:
While it's great to hear what a happy Gerry sounds like, I just feel like something is wrong. He sounds kinda...empty to me. And I don't trust this iteration of Gertrude. At first I thought she was just being protective but the way she was speaking for him kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

something that is kinda cool to me is it seems like in tma you get the statements of people who made it out long enough to tell their story's, even if they died in the end they where able to go to the magnus institute and record their experience. in tmagp they are pulling story's from those who didn't make it out and have a place to record everything, its pulling from last emails and locked forum post, old blogs and letters. they don't have ways to know what happened to them.

Thinking about Tim, and how he hid the trauma of his brother's death with sarcasm and humor.
Thinking about Alice, and how she shares a last name with someone on the Exel doc of Magnus Institute names. About how she hides behind sarcasm and humor.
Thinking about Tim, and how alone he must have been after learning about Sasha.
Thinking about Alice and how Sam seems to be her closest connection in the OIAR at the moment.
Thinking about Tim, and how indifferent he was with the statements, not getting drawn in like the others.
Thinking about Alice, and how she ignores the incidents, skims them, lets them play, ignores them nearly entirely.
Thinking about Tim and Alice...

with how often everyone, especially lena, are talking about how any of them could just quit the job if they wanted to, i can't help but wonder if quitting the job is the worse option for them.
in tma, everyone was basically being held captive by the eye. they couldn't quit, even if they tried. in tmagp, they could quit but maybe quitting would make them more accessible and vulnerable to the entities. it would mean that the entities would follow them into their personal lives and there would be no going back.
maybe in this scenario, staying in the institute is the safer option. quitting the job would be like walking out of the frying pan and into the fire.
