Saturday 12/24/22
X-mas eve. Fast till dinner. Few bites of vanilla kiggly. Pick at baccala.
Nichol’s for Italian parsley. Drive to Brewerton. Call Gary Loss to catch up.
1:11 PM -- Tismart Cigar Lounge. Coffee Mac. Perfect burn. Diet Dr Pepper Cream soda. Relax, think. Burly dudes smoking in corner. Catch conversation. Plow drivers? Mention strip clubs. “Cover at The Alpine?” The one by Battery World. Whoosah.
Home. Pick at broken rice croquettes. Shrimp tastes buttery, bad. Mare forgot, put oil on twice. Another Klonopin moment. Angry. Frustrated. This klonpin shit has to stop.
4:30 -- Pick up Dolores. Vent about Mare’s drug use. Brother Mike stops over. Wishes happy b’day. Food scaled back. 7 fishes now 2. Overdo it on tuna capellini. Several servings. Can’t stop. Just one slice bread. Pie sliver for dessert. No cookies. Spoonful chocolate gelato. More maple whiskey. 2 glasses Lambrusco.
Post dinner nap. Drive D home.
11:30 -- More pasta. One cookie. One slice of bread.
Schlem chat. Holiday blues. No x-mas spirit. Sue The Fitz if we have to.

Drag Week’s Diamond — All Boost and All-Wheel-Drive
All kinds of people and machines are attracted to the challenge of HOT ROD Drag Week, powered by Dodge, presented by Gear Vendors, and Marybeth Kiczenski was raised just south of Detroit, Michigan. Her proximity to the motor city has left her with a passion for motorsport and given her the attitude needed to succeed. As a product representative for FCA she works the auto shows and smaller events throughout the year while wrenching on her own car when she’s not working. Although motorsport is thought of as being male dominated through the years, many professional female racers have rose to the top ranks of motorsport, proving that gender doesn’t matter if you have the attitude to push yourself to the top.
Back to its roots. The DSM (Diamond-Star Motors) cars are a product of Chrysler and Mitsubishi in the 90s.
Marybeth has been on Drag Week twice now, the first year as a passenger and the second time as a driver. However, her car finished the event both times. The car in question is a 1995 Eagle Talon TSi. The DSM is an all-wheel-drive, 4G63 turbocharged sport-compact that shares its roots with both Chrysler and Mitsubishi.
The beautiful bright blue paintwork covers the curves of the car, while the black trim and wheels leaves an understated and refined look to the DSM. Under the carbon fiber hood is an engine built by Boostin Performance. Inside the block are Manley rods with Wiseco pistons, which give the 4G63 a slightly higher-than-stock 9.1:1 compression ratio. The head was reworked and ported by Marybeth and received some Ferrera valves, Kiggly springs and retainers, while Forced Performance supplied the new cams. A larger turbo helps with the 29 psi of boost needed to make almost 450 through all four wheels. To help handle the power, a warmed-over five-speed and a ShepTrans transfer-case sends power to all fours wheels, and Driveshaft Shop rear axles withstand that turbo power without a sweat.
The legendary 4G63. This tiny power plant has become a legend in the import world and for good reason. Marybeths is a clean example with forged internals, a worked over head, and a host of goodies inside and out.
The car itself is largely built by her and her boyfriend — and fellow Drag Weeker — Jason Trotter (JT) with help from Kristin and Devin Schultz from Boostin Performance on the short block and tuning. Speaking of JT, he was the driver of the Talon when Marybeth rode the first time on Drag Week. After signing up his car, a Dodge Daytona Shelby Z, he broke the transmission a week before leaving and with nothing else to take Marybeth volunteered her car.
The black accents keep the Talon looking clean, and fast.
During her time as co-pilot she got the bug to do Drag Week on her own. Over the next few years she upgraded and prepared the car. She registered (along with JT in his own car) for 2016. In late 2015 she blew the head gasket and decided to upgrade the shortblock. She pulled the engine in April and while it was out she had the bay painted. While that was being done she decided to upgrade the fuel system. As we all know things snowball and time was running out. Bits and pieces got replaced and issues fixed with 2 days before the start the car was barely finished (had to pick up drag radials on the way) and they headed to National Trail to start Drag Week.
Owner, driver, mechanic. For Marybeth the week was a blast. and meeting new friends and seeing the countryside are just a few of the highlights for her. She remembers being broken on the side of the road, her car pouring oil out of it when suddenly the Roadkill crew was there. This threw her off because the appeared from nowhere. None of the #turbomoparmafia had seen them for the entire drive until something went wrong. As Marybeth says “it’s like they have spider sense for broken cars.”
She hopes to run some 10 second ETs with the car this year and claims it’s just her holding the Talon back from running her goal. The fun, adventure and purity of the competitors keep her wanting to return and she will be back again this year to push the car and hopefully get those 10s.
With 5 months until the start of Drag Week Marybeth had the engine out and the bay painted. This is how 95% of Drag Weeker cars look at that time.
