The Homecoming is such an underrated episode of The OC. Truly one of its best...the writing and pacing are top-notch. It makes the few soapy plot elements actually feel genuine within the emotional landscape of the show. The sequence of all the adults fighting in the kitchen is perfectly done. The musical montage near the end of the ep is one of the show’s best montages. And of course the precious final scene between Ryan, Marissa, and Seth...*warm fuzzies* Just so real and lovely.
Also the costuming is particularly *excellent* - everyone’s outfits are linked in some ways. Kirsten and Sandy in black, united against the chaos. Seth’s clothes evokes elements in Summer and Anna’s outfits. Caleb and Jimmy both in blue, with their romantic foils Julie and Rachel in bright but clashing colors. Peak OC! The show at its height!

Marissa was surrounded by pretty smart people
so, i watched the OC for the first time and realized something, Marissa was surrounded by geniuses more or less. not all of them geniuses but definitely people whose IQ’s were high up there.
- Ryan’s first conversation with Sandy was about his good grades and high test scores. Later on he leans towards architecture to major in and we already see him know how everything works. in the finale we see he has his own company too.
- Seth is a generally good student as well, no huge discernible mentions but he’s also artistic and knowledgeable about films and cinema. plus you could call his sarcasm a whole subject entirely to be able to catch up with.
- Summer, she’s already more emotionally intelligent than most of the main four and she grows up a lot too, getting involved in the environment. but she also had great SAT scores when they were applying to colleges, didn’t she get early admission to Brown or something??
- Taylor was already an overachiever with straight A’s, was valedictorian, and very cultured person. who can also speak like six languages (Korean, Spanish, French, Italian, i think Vietnamese and i doubt that’s the end of it). need i say more?
- Kaitlin turned out to be some kind of math whiz at one point?? and you know what, makes sense. Plus in that ‘what if’ Chrismukkah episode it’s basically confirmed that Kaitlyn could’ve gotten into Berkeley at 15. She was called a prodigy (by herself but i mean its kinda true).
now this isn’t to say that Marissa wasn’t smart, but i do know her grades weren’t the best (but there are different types of intelligences). especially when a lot of people make some dumb mistakes, it lets you know, plenty of smart people can be idiots. anyway, it’s just something i realized wanted to get out there, any thoughts to add? go right ahead.
