Taking the part in “The Diplomat” made Sewell a Brit living in the United States but working in London playing an American. It’s an equation he’s used to. “Nothing’s strange anymore,” he said. “I’ve been more or less living in Los Angeles for about 15 years. I say ‘more or less’ because it wasn’t like I made a specific move. I went with a job, I kind of stayed, and then the staying became concrete. And round about the time I started to stay in Los Angeles, my career in England really picked up.
“And it’s remained that way. Here I am now in the ultimate irony of positions: to be six, seven months a year playing an American in London. But I’m used to this hybrid American/English thing by now. And I’m pretty philosophical. I just know that wherever I plan to be, I can’t anticipate where my life will be.” the wrap, 2023 (I am sure I posted this before..lol)

Good things come to those who wait – and Rufus Sewell definitely knows what that means now.
The Brit once earned a Tony nomination for his role in Rock 'n' Roll, a recognition he certainly wasn’t expecting given how long ago the play was. “It was a while ago so I’m really happy to be remembered because your chances of being nominated get slimmer the much further away it is."
However, Rufus had to delay his gratification as he was in an airport when he sort of learned of the news. “I got off the plane and I got a text congratulating me and I didn’t know what for,” he says. “I was trying to find out what for and security at immigration shouted at me to turn my phone off. So I had to wait an hour and a half to find out what for, but it was very special to find out in New York."

Playing Prince Andrew was uncomfortable, funny, bizarre: Scoop actor Rufus Sewell
I think I didn't post this before....
In a recent interview with Josh Rom, director Philip Martin and actor Rufus Sewell discussed the challenges and nuances of bringing the infamous Prince Andrew interview to life in their new film. Martin, who previously directed episodes of The Crown, shared his excitement about tackling a more contemporary royal story. He highlighted the appeal of exploring a modern narrative and capturing the surreal and bizarre elements of the interview. Sewell, who portrays Prince Andrew in the film, opened up about the complexities of playing such a controversial figure. He emphasized the importance of trying to understand Andrew's perspective, even if it doesn't necessarily mean sympathizing with him. He also shared his initial reservations about taking on the role but ultimately found the challenge rewarding. The interview scenes in the film were noted for their subtle comic elements, with lines delivered by Rufus Sewell receiving praise for their brilliance. Both Martin and Sewell agreed that the tone of the film was crucial in balancing the serious and surreal aspects of the story. They aimed to capture the essence of the interview while providing viewers with a deeper emotional understanding of the characters involved.

As Prince Andrew’s top aide and private secretary, Amanda Thirsk works tirelessly to manage the scandal he finds himself at the center of. Amanda feels like she is part of the royal family because she’s been with them for so long, and does her best to look out for the prince — but she can only do so much.
“She was pivotal in the decision that Prince Andrew should do this interview with Newsnight,” Hawes told Netflix. “And so we meet her at a very early stage where she goes and agrees to have a meeting with Sam McAlister. The wheels start turning and Amanda Thirsk thinks that this could be a really good idea in terms of PR for Prince Andrew.” source/pic from Rufus IG/critics

Qu: Do you still get mistaken for Joaquin Phoenix?
» It’s happened a couple of times recently but it doesn’t happen as often as it used to. It’s funny now but it used to really p*** me off. Since The Illusionist and Amazing Grace, I don’t clench in the same way I did when people come up to me. When I get asked to sign something, I always ask them who they think I am. I also get mistaken for Lovejoy. Mistaken identity isn’t always a bad thing. My mates used to be in the Royal Shakespeare Company and I learned very quickly that if I hung around the local pub with a dodgy Shakespearean beard, American tourists would tell me ‘You’re all so wonderful’ and buy me lager. I’d leave it until after the first drink to explain who I really was. » Rufus Sewell, metro uk

"I really obsessively watched that interview.' Rufus Sewell reveals how he became Prince Andrew to film Scoop, the much-anticipated Netflix drama detailing the story behind the Duke of York's infamous BBC Newsnight interview in 2019 with Emily Maitlis. Richard and Susanna spoke to Rufus Sewell ahead of his portrayal of Prince Andrew, Broadcast on 27/03/24
Rufus: 'I obsessively watched the interview. I watched it at the time like everyone else, I was kind of transfixed for various reasons. Like most people I had my own judgements. 'But doing it is a different thing and trying to put yourself in the position of someone like that and working out what their reasoning and justification in their own head might be. Because that's what people do.  'And I spent hours and hours everyday trying to work out what he was thinking. You could only ever guess. When there was a hesitation or a stutter, or a particular movement of the head - what was behind it? 'So Gillian and I could play out our version of events.' 'I thought about what people might say, they might accuse me of trying to make him look bad, trying to make him look good. That's the danger of playing a real person.' Rufus, who got engaged to his girlfriend Vivian Benitez in December, underwent a total image transformation to become Prince Andrew and he described the result as 'the perfect blend between myself and him.' Rufus said: 'At one point there were eyelids on me and I look so much like him it was uncanny but then I couldn't move my eyes properly and when you watch the interview so much of it is in the eyes.' "Yes, I would say, for me, if I had one thing I was good at, it would be comedy. I mean, beware of what actors say they like doing, obviously. I mean, it's not always a pleasure to watch people in their dream roles, but for me, it's the one thing that I like doing the most." Rufus Sewell npr
