Webnovel: The Ghost
Tumblr media
The days were quiet.
They'd been quiet for a long time now; stepping out of public office while still alive was not typical of Tandu politics, particularly not near the top of the hierarchy. The people treated Gudrun Thew’s privacy as a sacred thing now. He had land enough that the border turrets were easily masked by nearer plant life - admittedly mostly varieties of cactus, but they did flower nicely on the rare occasions that it rained. The sprawling residence had guest rooms enough that were he inclined, he could throw a party that guested half of Tandu's ruling class. In the main, they were storage. A lifetime of things, mementos to be shared with no one, yet too difficult to throw away.
He had the sad feeling that the day he could throw them out he should probably check himself into a hospital, for suicide watch. The quiet was too quiet. Decades of being surrounded by the feel of others' hearts made the silence empty. He treasured the visits, scheduled and not, that friends made, and the regular calls from his daughter. It was like a breath of life, even if it was unfair to place that much weight on it.
Gudrun didn't hear what had to have been a thud of impact. But he did hear the nova of pain, even all the way at the western side of his house, where the cat had taken over a sunbeam.
Someone had come. Someone who needed help, by the feel of it. Gudrun couldn't shut the pain out, but he'd had many years to learn how to function through someone else's suffering. He headed for the front door, grabbing a phone on the way. He only had basic first aid on hand. Nothing that could deal with this raging, blinding pain. Whoever it was, every nerve ending seemed to be on fire.
Gudrun opened the front door to find a figure sprawled out face-down on the front step, the pain fading now as unconsciousness took over. There was a pulse blade sheathed across the figure’s back that looked familiar. He'd seen it before, he was sure of that. So whoever it was, they'd met. One of the Academy students, possibly, that had taken up the weapon. Gudrun bent down, saw no sign of blood or vomit – nothing to indicate the cause or source of that great pain - and turned the sprawled figure onto its back.
Dropped to his knees.
My son.

mage-pie on this post about business writing:
Make him give you a raise for this!
evil-is-relative  on this post about business writing:
Demand a raise.
justalurkr  on this post about business writing:
It'll be fine. But, yeah; with extra responsibility should come extra compensation.
Sadly, they absolutely did give me a raise and now I’m stuck with it :D It’ll be fine, it’s not a chore per se, at least not any more than work ever is, it’s just funny to be trying to talk to people I’ve been watching from afar for a decade.
twelfth-doctor  on this post about business writing:
grant writing is a tricky thing. You just gotta do your best and try not to think about the ramifications
Yeah, I figure the worst case is we annoy them, but it’s not like they’re likely to remember we annoyed them if we try again in a year or two :D
larathia on this post about business writing:
Any resources you'd recommend for other people to learn business writing?
Honestly, the way I learned was mostly by reading a lot of it and doing a lot of it. In my last job occasionally I’d be asked to compose an email to a much-higher-up, then it’d be edited before being sent, and I got to see the edits, which helped. Otherwise the best advice I have is to read about negative text bias and practice writing “around” it -- basically we have an inherent bias where we will generally read text in a negative tone if it’s possible to do so, and a lot of my business writing work is channeled into counteracting that negative bias, making sure I use language that’s on the positive end of the spectrum rather than neutral, while still remaining professional. That’s a huge chunk of effective business communication.

Hey! I was just wondering if you can share with us any new/not known, king of longer fics full of fluff and love? I'm in pretty bad shape right now and i just need some love in my life. Also very big thank you for all that you are doing, you are amazing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s a general update on our long fic tag, featuring more 100k+ works than ever! (There’s mostly some angsty topics here, if I’m honest, but the first few are more fluffy for the first ask)
Your Constellation Prize - rosegardenlake @whoalookincooljoker
166k. (Mature) Contains: nsfw content, mild homophobia
Akira is Hollywood’s biggest celebrity.  He sings, he acts, he models, he does it all and he does it perfectly.  That’s what Shiro thinks at least, but what would he know?  He’s just a tired office worker whose dreams fell through years ago.  …But when he sees Akira, oh god, when he sees him - Shiro’s world fills with light again.
When Shiro lands an interview to be an assistant at Akira’s company, he has a hard time believing it’s reality.  Though Akira’s rarely around, meeting everyone is like a dream.  Especially meeting Keith, Akira’s shy sweet dorky cousin (OR IS HE?!)
Be My Player 2? - Myoneloveismusic @my-one-love-is-music
131k. (Explicit) Contains: nsfw content
Keith gets anxious about paying for school sometimes. Shiro doesn't have to worry about having his finances covered, but he has his own set of issues. By some lucky twist of fate, the two of them meet late one night and team up while playing the popular MMORPG "Voltron: Defenders of the Universe." They connect immediately and find comfort and friendship in each other when they're alone in their homes miles and miles apart.
Ready For It - nihonlove @nihonlove
110k. (Explicit) Contains: nsfw content, trans Keith, mentioned & post-mpreg, sexual harassment, implied/referenced past non-con, PTSD, one sided James/Keith
Keith and Shiro are both people who can’t say they’ve been especially lucky in love. Keith struggles through life having to co-parent his daughter with his asshole ex. The ghosts of the actions of Shiro’s ex, along with the memories associated with the circumstances of their break-up, are becoming more and more difficult to evade. When their mutual friends set them up on a blind date, they need to learn to navigate their pasts, presents and futures together, while trying to figure out if their budding relationship can withstand all the obstacles in their way, both internal and external.
the peace-weaver - magisterpavus @saltyshiro
240k. (Explicit) Contains: nsfw content, trans Keith, graphic depictions of violence, sexual violence
You will be the peace-weaver, his mother told him, smiling though her dark eyes welled with unshed grief. The one who brings two bitter enemies together and ends the bloodshed and death between us, once and for all.
But men will always crave war. The Galra, most of all.
The Price of Wished Granted - Larathia @larathia
259k. (Teen) Contains: Curtis/Shiro
Keith couldn't bear a universe that didn't have Shiro in it. What he got was a universe that had a Shiro that no longer loved him. And maybe if it had been anyone but Keith, that would have mattered.
Keith, however, had made a promise. "As many times as it takes," he'd said.
If he could make that promise reach beyond the bounds of death, a little thing like Shiro marrying someone else wasn't going to stand a chance.
Last of the Real Ones - AngelofShadows @sheith-writes
208k. (Explicit) Contains: nsfw content, past rape/non-con, past child abuse, panic attacks
Keith Kogane and Takashi Shirogane are closer than anything. Shiro was the first person Keith ever let in, and Keith is the one person Shiro allows himself to lean on, to not be strong around. They will do anything for each other, even cross the stars a thousand times over. Even die. This is how their story began, and how they handle the life they have been dealt. Chasing after each other and defending the universe from the forces of evil isn't easy, but they'll be fine as long as they have each other to depend on.Or, the AU where Keith and Shiro were always together, no matter what anyone says.
In the Lines of Shadow - xenoglossia (oncharredwings)
103k. (Explicit) Contains: nsfw content, trans Keith, minor character death
Shiro is the god of the Underworld, living in shadow and death, he comes occasionally to the mortal's realm.
Keith is the god of growing life and spring, his skin like sunlight lives inside his very skeleton.
They shouldn't be but their love quickly entwines and tangles together. A retelling of Persephone and Hades.
The Lions’ Vessel - NeonCandies @prussiancandy
124k. (Mature) Contains: major character death, graphic depictions of violence
When Alfor took a party in search of Oriande, Yorak had been one of the few deemed worthy by the Guardian. However unlike Alfor and the others, Yorak was given a separate blessing. He was given the chance to become a vessel for the Guardian. After accepting this responsibility, Yorak remained on Oriande, placed into a slumber till the Guardian deemed it time for him to return to the outside world and carry out his mission.
Like You - rosegardenlake @woahlookincooljoker
166k. (Mature) Contains: PTSD, anxiety attacks, depression, racism, hostage situations, blood
The war is over. What awaits the paladins at home is peace and healing and light. At least, that’s what Keith believes, who has gotten everything in life he could’ve possibly dreamed of: married to the man he loves most, surrounded by people who support and care for him. He thinks maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to expand on that happiness. Lance and Allura’s little ones live such a charmed happy life, what is there to fear?
But the world will never be without its problems, no matter how small in comparison they may seem. When Keith and Shiro decide to raise a child, Keith is desperate to protect him from the harshness of the world he had to endure.
But he quickly learns not all enemies are tangible, and sometimes, the worst ones come from within.

Palen-Bol
read it on the AO3 at http://bit.ly/2VtnbIC
by Larathia
Building on the AU created by the first two stories in this series, but written after canon's conclusion, the author has decided that she has done all she can with canon, and as canon made some stupid-ass decisions, she is henceforth choosing to ignore them in favor of seeing what she can do with the same basic events.
Author suggests reading the first two stories in this series to see where the initial divergences are. Author will not be writing porn, but may creep up into an R rating. Possibly. Author remains, however, committed to the belief that Voltron is a thematically positive universe and therefore the endings will be happy even if you have to beat the crap out of all nine circles of Hell to get there.

Third Wheel’s the Charm #28: The Closing Net
Tumblr media
Ch. 28: The Closing Net
Summary (series): At the end of Season 4, Keith tried a suicide run at Haggar's ship in a desperate bid to save Voltron. A run that only a few people realized was happening, and no one brought up later; after all, Lotor had made it all unneccessary and no one got hurt. But what if Matt had made sure the other paladins knew what had happened, and the people near Keith cared enough to do something about it? That's where this AU starts.
Summary (this fic): At last the Paladins return to Earth. But Sendak and Haggar got there first, and nothing about this is going to go the way canon took it.
Rating: Mature (violence, language, sexual situations aren't DETAILED but they're THERE.)
Ships: Shiro/Keith, Matt/Lance, Lotor/Allura sortakinda. (Allura's life is COMPLICATED.) Most of the series is ship-free, but round about Palen-Bol things start developing. My focus is more on plots than ships and I do not write sex scenes, but there you go.
Warnings: Bad things have happened to pretty much everyone. I've done what I can to give each person some support, but...yeah. BAD THINGS HAVE HAPPENED TO EVERYONE.
Castles in the Sky That Which Yet May Be Finding Shiro Palen-Bol Third Wheel's the Charm
This chapter:
The Paladins return to Earth and get busy cleansing it of Druid presence. Shiro and Keith have a particularly hard time of it, because silence - even when well-intentioned - can have unpleasant side effects. I should probably promise in advance that Keith is not suicidal and I actually do not enjoy hurting him; it's just that he's a front-lines kind of guy and that has a price tag.

This chapter:
A little taste of the lazy (or at least lazier) days of peace. As promised, it's more of an epilogue than a chapter, but I wanted to give you all a feeling of how it all might stretch forward.
Despite my choice of final paragraph, for me this saga ends here. Hopefully, I've carried this AU to a reasonably satisfying ending. I thank you all for coming along on this wacky and way-too-long ride.

This chapter:
The Paladins take a little time to make sure their rescuees are in decent shape before returning to Earth. Colleen and Krolia are a scary pair of moms, and Lotor's Generals make an intriguing offer. We're nearing the endgame now which means I'm hunting loose ends to tie up. Slow to update though this series has been, I am making finishing the series my 2022 priority. Take that how you will.

Two amusing (to me, anyway) notes for the evening.
1) When I say Kuthumae is androgynously pretty, I mean ‘could absolutely blend into pretty much any kpop boy band provided you gave him, say, sunglasses to hide that his eyes are different’.
2) Actually in any way pointing this out to him would result in swift and ruthless retribution, which is why I am now going to bed.

Sometimes I get dreams I can use. Sometimes not so much.
I was part of a crew of spacefarers. Not a very bright lot, not the most prone to self-care or bathing or anything. Somewhere between Serenity and Otherspace (for anyone that knows what that meant).
There were five or six of us to start with. Not exactly law abiding, but not quite pirates either. Smugglers, maybe, of a variety less cute than Han Solo. But we'd pissed off The Law bigtime, and our only choice was to somehow get all the way to the homeworld alive to clear our names.
This involved months and months of slow in-system travel because using the faster drives would leave a trail law enforcement could follow, and at least one intersystem jump gate.
We lost our shuttle at the jump gate. Running from the cops, we didn't dare slow down to properly attach a cable to the free-floating shuttle, so it would follow our trajectory. No, we had to aim the shuttle at the jump gate remotely, and then turn it on, and hope.
We watched that little shuttle bounce right off the top of the gate, just as we slid through.
Then came the long months of silent running. For me it wasn't a problem as such; in this dream I was a quiet wierdo of a guy who never talked if he could help it, and whose thinking was skewed enough that stuff i thought was normal and fine (like walking around the ship in the nude because it was laundry day and we all knew each other) gave everyone else something to talk and joke about.
But, one by one, the cops caught us. We'd leave the ship to get supplies on a moon or a station and someone wouldn't make it back.
Somewhere around Mars, that someone was me. I remember seeing the cops, trying to dodge them and be inconspicuous (which, given ME, was not working). I remember a tray of candy sprinkles, like you'd put on a cupcake, and selecting just one perfectly round dark red one. Telling someone that the dye for these beads was so intense that you could make a gallon of fake blood by putting just this one bead in a jug of water and giving it a good shake.
They ran away and I turned to see a bunch of very angry cops. And something hit me in the back of the head. I reached back and pulled out a big butcher knife; they'd shoved it up from the back of the neck and into my brain, and pulling it out was what dropped me.
My ghost went back to the ship, and took off his clothes and folded them up like it was laundry day. My naked ghost went to the rest of the crew - all two of them - unsurprised that they could see me, that they were staring at me with stiff trying-not-to-cry faces.
I said, "Well. Take care, boys," and walked off the ship. I watched it take off, and that was the end.

The Ghost #129: Getting To The Heart Of Things
Tumblr media
#129: Getting To The Heart Of Things
Summary (serial): Kuthumae's a highly trained mercenary captain who's pulled off the impossible (and the extremely improbable) many times. It's had its costs; on the last mission, while he pulled off the impossible job and got his team home alive, he got stuck between dimensions, in a plane outside the normal flow of time. There he met a girl - because if one person can be stuck there, why not two? Rina is the sheltered-yet-traumatized daughter of a noble family on an entirely different world from Kuth; a world of goddesses and wishes, imprisoned in that dimension so that she may never realize the full extent of her powers. Not that she's likely to; she volunteered to be put there. When the two meet, they each prove the key to the other's freedom - and we'd say they hold the keys to each other's hearts, but frankly when it comes to People, we're talking about a pair of dumbasses here.
Summary (this arc): In an unprecedented bargain, the worlds of Arsu and Andeliin have exchanged the services of dozens if not hundreds of Specialists for ownership of the Tyrant of Andeliin's former flagship - a ship that can cross the layers of reality. Or at least it could, before the Tyrant was turned into a lake of glass and Sif blew a very large hole straight through its alien engines. But no big, right? They just have to figure out how it crosses the layers, how its engines work, and fix all the damage somehow. Right? Oh, and then figure out how to steer it. And - wait. Which way would 'home' be, if you have to walk it instead of jump?
Rating: Mature (violence, language)
Warnings: This chapter discusses things like long-term torture. The 2019 Master Linkpost is here. The 2020 Master Linkpost is here. The 2021 Master Linkpost is here. The 2022 Master Linkpost is here.
New reader? Don't love in medias res? Begin here! (Or head to the grand masterpost and pick a likely arc!)
This week:
The ship is fixed. They know where the on switch is, and do a little test to be sure they know how to flip it. Now there's just figuring out where the steering wheel got to.

The Ghost #128: Diversions

#128: Diversions

This week:
Kuth and Rina manage to utterly fail at communication. On the other hand, the new Enforcers prove very effective at it. Rina, looking for something nonconfrontational, instead finds a sign that the city is indeed recovering.
