Of course when you're cosplaying such a humorous larger than life character like the Genie, you want to try and make people laugh. So whenever I would see a Jafar, I'd greet them by saying "Jafar, Jafar, he's our man, if he can't do it, GREAT!!!" You can probably tell I leaped at any opportunity to quote from the movies as best as I could, some of which, thankfully was caught on camera. I know I'm no Robin Williams but I'm trying my very best to honor him with my impressions. I think one of my favorite instances that day was running into famous cosplayer Allen Waiserman, who was also dressed as the Genie, but as Mrs. Doubtfire as a nod to a quick gag from Aladdin and the King of Thieves. We both love Robin dearly and I truly hope that Mr. Williams would have approved of our costumes.
The Genie was one of the first characters I hoped to do when I officially started cosplaying back in 2013. I had always hoped to make something similar to the costume in the Disney California Adventure show but I was a little intimidated to do something with a bald cap, so I decided to shelve the idea until the time was right. After my day as Lumiere at the 2017 D23 Expo, I thought "wouldn't it be great if I could cosplay my three favorite Disney sidekicks of all time?" (Those being Lumiere, Sebastian, and the Genie.) So ever since that con ended, I started brainstorming ideas as to how I could bring my own version of the Genie to life. As of recently, I've been wanting to make costumes of characters during years where they would be popular. Similar to how I made my Lumiere to coincide with the release of the 2017 Beauty and the Beast remake, I knew that having the Genie ready by 2019 would be ideal since the new Aladdin movie was coming out that year, despite my costume being inspired by the original animated character.
The costume was put together within just three days of my flying out to California, believe it or not. I had the hardest time deciding which of my designs for the character I wanted to bring to the con. In the end, I decided to go with a variation that incorporated a little bit of everything from various media that featured the big blue lovable djinni. The animated blue skin served as a base, while the vest, pants, and mantle are taken from the Broadway version of Aladdin with a nod to the DCA show in the form of a bowtie, whereas the sleeves are taken from Mickey and the Magician, the shoes are from Once Upon a Time, and the sash with the tassel belts are taken from Will Smith's recent portrayal.
Finding the materials for these was the most difficult, especially the pants. (I had to dye that fabric myself since finding a material with the kind of patterns I want in the color I need is a lot harder than it ought to be.) Once I had all my fabrics with less than a week to go until the Expo, I took them to my local dry cleaner (who also put together the clothes for my Lumiere) and she was able to whip up what I needed in no time at all. While that was being worked on, one of my best friends helped me apply the bald cap for the first time.
By some manner of miracle, I had everything ready when I got to California. The day of the con was the first time I had seen everything together and I honestly couldn't believe I pulled it off. I could not have done this costume alone, so a very special thanks goes out to all the people I pestered with questions as to how to do stuff or what resources to use, and my endless gratitude goes out to Negena and Beth. Without them, I would never have had my wish to cosplay the Genie come true.
I had always loved playing dress up as a kid, and I think something that really kept that alive growing older was my zest for theater and the performing arts. But I also never would have imagined that there were other people that also loved to play pretend in costume...and they weren't even on a stage! So you can imagine how much I really wanted to get in on the cosplay scene.
Unfortunately, by the time I did, it was during a really dark time in my life. I was at my lowest point and it seemed like there was no escape from my depression. But then when I put on my first cosplay, I found myself suddenly free to be someone else. Getting lost in character was the best kind of escape I never could have predicted.
Tumblr media
For just a few days, I was able to quiet my troubled mind and just focus on being the best Captain Hook I could be. I realized that this art form that combined my love of acting and my passion for costuming had somehow restored my livelihood. Ever since then, I've tried to cosplay as many characters that brought out my fondest memories and it's made me so happy. And if what I do can manage to make someone smile for just a moment, then that would be enough for me. After all, there are so many other cosplayers that inspire me just by doing what they love. I've made so many new wonderful connections because of this hobby and it's truly changed my life for the better. But I never would have found any of this if it weren't for D23. I'm not kidding when I tell you that I literally live for that expo. It celebrates all the things I cherish, cosplay being chiefly among them and I'm so very thankful for that.

some things from off-west end heathers (26/07/18)
- jd is SO good, oh man. i feel like in the original cast, jd’s character can be taken less seriously because he goes more for the manic grinning psycho character, whereas jamie muscato’s interpretation was scary. when he snaps towards the end of the show his voice changes into this raw, rough scream-like thing so he’s almost yelling some of his bigger notes. it feels so much more threatening, especially in the moments where he’s holding and fighting veronica, and much less like the UWU MY ANGSTY BEAN character that i ocassionally see in fandom shit, which i thought was great
- carrie hope frickin fletcher. oh man. she was so awesome. i LOVED her veronica, loved loved loved! there were so many little quirks in her performance that were so theatrical and nuanced, little stops and razor-sharp raising of eyebrows; she felt like a really strong, sparky character, even through the heathers slowly turning her into a bitch, her sass and original character quirks still stayed throughout. this is explained terribly, but essentially i loved it
- the heathers were grEAT. just GREAT. oh man, they were so good
- the ensemble were aboslutely tight as BALLS, man! they were incredible and i dont think we realise on cast recordings how much of the songs they sing through to make everything sound tight and punchy. ‘new wave girl’ and ‘stoner chick’ were my favourite
- fight for me had been modulated down a tone or so
- the second verse in big fun was changed, all centred around ‘veronica looks hot tonight!’ it worked really well and i loved it
- instead of the “so it’s salt, then lime, then shot, YOU’RE DONIG IT WRONG” moment, heather mac told her the order, veronica aced it, mac said “you’re a natural! just like my mom!”
- the “quit it jackass get off of me” and the freshman sneaking over the pool fence section was cut
- “sorry but i really had to wake you” was changed to “had to see you, hope i didn’t wake you”
- some of the biggest notes in  veronica’s part the show were cut, which of course is a tad disappointing to not hear live, but you’d have to be superhuman to sing those insane parts without vocal damage anyway, so i totally understood, the songs still went HARD
- after dead girl walking when veronica dreams of heather coming back and thrashing her for the whole martha-pig-vomit scenario, she’s wearing this massive ass red scrunchie that went round her entire head it was hilarious
- whenever the ensemble come into somebody’s imagined scenario (we the students of westerberg high will die), dream (aforementioned giant scrunchie dream) or general creepy bit (shine a light reprise), they all wore those white frame red-and-blue 3d glasses
- they changed ‘heather touching me’ in me inside of me to kurt and ram instead of a girl :/
- heather chandler running round the stage when she’s going ‘I’M BIGGER THAN JOHN LENNON’ was the funniest thing, she like ran around the characters singing about her and did shitty leaps around the stage it was the BEST
- the new song ‘you’re welcome’ was really great and veronica was a badass. i kinda wanted to see blue live because it’s my #problematic fave, i know it makes light of issues around assault but also the song is so ridiculous and i love it, it was the first song i ever heard from heathers that @pjfangirllvnda shoved into my ear one day with absolutely zero context and i was like what the actual fuck. however, in terms of the show, you’re welcome worked really really well and i think it’s a better song for the show
- because of the aforementioned jd performance, our love is god was incredibly powerful, especially at the end when veronica was like wtf you killed them, you could tell she wanted out but jd was holding her and it seemed like he had her trapped and she looked terrified, his stage presence was so menacing it worked great, you could see him co-ering her into joining in with the final ‘our love is god’s. ALSO ram had a shitty tie and veronica was like “oh i like your tie ram’ (she did the best ever act of OMG YOU’RE SO HOT STRIPPING FOR ME it was brilliant) and he was like ‘thanks, my mom got it for me.’ he’d just taken it off, so he went in the pile of clothes and put it back on. ‘thanks, mom!’
- heather duke’s song was BOSS and included the ‘big swordfight in her mouth’ part, but as a reprise of ‘big fun’ than blue which worked really well. there’s a little reveal in the song, which i won’t spoil (i didn’t have it spoiled for me and i squealed) but it was so GOOD, shoutout to t'shan williams for being so damn great
- dead gay son was so great and the whole audience went MAD when kurt and rams dads started making out
- shine a light had been modulated down a semitone i think. the ‘steve, i’m ending our affair’ was hilarious, she was like “oh god is that your wife,,, and your children?? you bought your entire family to our school assembly?? wellllll this is awkward,, hi i’m pauline,,, hope you’re enjoying the show,,,” miss fleming’s voice was amazing AND they had those light-up books to dance with in the ensemble which was cool
- lifeboat had been modulated somewhere, i could have sworn it went up, i LOVED heather mac’s voice, particularly her vibrato was so well controlled and not just super-fast manic it fitted the mood of the song so well, shoutout to sophie isaacs you’re awesome
- in shine a light reprise, “you don’t deserve to live, go on and bitch and moan, you don’t deserve the dream, you’re gonna die alone” or whatever, instead of repeating the same melody twice, she just kept going up on every line DAMN did i mention she was awesome
- kindergarten boyfriend was never a favourite song of mine but DAMN did jenny o’leary do it justice. there was this big pause when she sang ‘certain girls are meant to be alone’ - she was sat at the top of the upper level of the stage stage with her legs danging over the edge, at that line she stood up and went to stand in the centre of that platform in this big silence it was like the whole theatre held its breath
- meant to be yours was terrifying due to aforementioned jd awesomeness, oh MAN
- my favourite line ‘cheek to cheek in hell with a dead girl walking’ YAS
- i am damaged i think had a lyric or two changed and it seemed like jd was less regretful, more like ‘you beat me there’s nothing i can do’ rather then the kind of ‘i’m playing fair so i’ll stand down because i have some human-like regrets’ that i got from the original cast recording, which again i liked because it feels truer to the movie and the fact that jd is always a seriously messed up guy, not just a #edgy teen
- standing ovation and seventeen reprise as we all cheered off the curtain call was awesome
- THE BAND WERE ABSOLUTELY AWESOME AS A SAXOPHONIST I WAS WEEEEEPPIIIIINNNGGGG I WANNA PLAY IN THE BAND FOR HEATHERS
- everything was g r e a t and as my first ever live musical i am STOKED it was so awesome
- (bonus: we saw a matinee so there wasn’t anyone doing signings because of the second show later on, but my friend was the only person i’ve ever seen to cosplay martha and she got a photo with jenny just as she was leaving!! how cool is that!!)

Michelle Obama praises 'Black Panther,' celebrity Twitter agrees
Michelle Obama doesn’t tweet that often, preferring to save social media for special occasions — like, for example, the opening weekend of Black Panther. The former FLOTUS took a moment on Monday to praise the new Marvel superhero movie, the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature an African-American actor in the title role and an almost entirely black cast. (That’s a big leap from the first MCU film, 2008’s Iron Man, which had exactly one black actor in a named role — or two, if you count the 20-second post-credits scene.) And Michelle wasn’t the only social-media-savvy celebrity to shower praise on the film, which has a 97 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes (despite sabotage efforts from certain corners of the internet) and smashed box-office records this weekend. Here’s a roundup of high-profile praise for Black Panther on Twitter and Instagram.
Michelle Obama called the film an inspiration for a new generation of audience members.
Congrats to the entire #blackpanther team! Because of you, young people will finally see superheroes that look like them on the big screen. I loved this movie and I know it will inspire people of all backgrounds to dig deep and find the courage to be heroes of their own stories.

Katie York is a photographer from Los Angeles, California. I first met Katie in early 2015 through the Doctor Who Community. She was a Twelfth Doctor Cosplayer at the time. I ,myself, was also a Doctor Who cosplayer and also from the surrounding Los Angeles area. I began to follow her on Instagram and very quickly formed a friendship with her. Our shared interest stretched far beyond just Doctor Who and Cosplay.  We talked daily about our fandoms, our lives and our passions. One passion we shared and cared very deeply about was Cosplay Photography. For us cosplay photography was just as important as the cosplays themselves. Photography was our way of celebrating our fandom. Doing our best to bring out the hard work and effort that had gone into making these cosplays. Doing our best to do justice to the cosplays and the cosplayer. Most of what I have learned about cosplay photography I have learned from Katie. She has a very unique style and approach to shooting cosplays. To me, her photos seem softer and more sophisticated than a lot of the Cosplay Photography I have seen out there. She brings out the personalities of the people she photographs just as well as she does the loveliness of their cosplays. It is this unique style that makes her so sought after as a photographer. Her Wonder Woman Cosplay Project, which you will read about below, is touching  and brilliant. I am very honored to be sharing her work and her story with you.
Your story, tell us about yourself. Hi all, I’m Katie! I’m a purple loving lady who moved with my mom and my dog from the east coast (New Hampshire) to the west coast (Southern California) to pursue a career in film post production. I love many things, most of them being my family, my fandoms (Disney, Wonder Woman, Sherlock and Star Trek to name a few.) and my pretend boyfriends (the most recent being Taika Waititi, Karl Urban and Chris Pine). When I’m not behind the lens of my Nikon I can be found running around my second home, Disneyland!
How long have you been interested in photography and storytelling? Photography has always flitted in and out of my life for quite sometime. I tinkered with disposable cameras all throughout my childhood years. I’d like to point out that most, if not all, of those photos were terrible wide shots of my disinterested dog and my startled Grandma. As I grew older I loved watching America’s Next Top Model for the sole reason of seeing how the photos from the shoots turned out. I was obsessed with the concept shoots and how interesting and fun and statuesque the models always looked. However, if I was to pinpoint when my love for the art solidified it was probably my senior year of high school into the first few months of college when I got to develop and process my own black and white film. At the time I had really NO idea what I was doing but I enjoyed doing it. Shortly after graduating college though, my camera fell by the wayside while I began building the foundation of my career in post production. Fast forward 5 years later, with my very first bonus check from my first real SERIOUS job in my hand, I bought my first DSLR camera and it’s been a passionate love ever since.
How long have you been interested in cosplay photography? I’ve been interested in cosplay photography for a little over 2 years? I never really thought it to be something I’d be interested in until I started regularly going to conventions around 3 years ago. Walking around the convention floor you can see all the love and dedication these people have for the craft and for the characters they wear. It’s infectious and since I’m nowhere near as handy as they are I felt compelled to contribute to this community somehow. So the photography just fell right into place. I like to consider cosplay photography as souped up portrait photography. The colors and textures and all the different faces make working with cosplayers so rewarding.
What got you started in cosplay/ cosplay photography? I was a Doctor Who cosplayer for a time and had some friends in our local community who were also into it. At the time I really didn’t even know cosplay shoots were a “thing”. We wanted to get photos outside of a convention setting so I reached out to a friend who knew a friend who had a camera. It’s been history ever since.

Is there any kind of equipment that you prefer to use when shooting cosplay? I’m not very fussy when it comes to equipment. As long as I have even, natural light and my workhorse lens (a.k.a my Sigma 50-100 mm f/1.8) I’m good to go! That said, what I keep in my kit is my Nikon D3300 body, Sigma 50-100 f/1.8, Nikkor 35mm f/1.8, Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 and Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6. Oh, and a TON of fairy lights. You never know when you need to get sparkly on a shoot.
You had a photo go viral recently. What is the story there and How do you feel about that? I did and it was such an incredibly wild experience! But to provide context, I met Steven and Millie a.k.a the Cosplay Parents at Long Beach Comic Con this past September. Running around various circles in the Southern California Comic Convention scene I had learned of Steven and Millie. I had seen many photos of their beautiful cosplays around the internet but I never had the chance to actually formally introduce myself. Until a week before Long Beach Comic Con when my friend looped me in on a tweet from them showcasing their latest cosplay confection. Diana Prince and Steve Trevor. Needless to say, I flipped and the subsequent tweets expressed my enthusiasm. We confirmed I’d love the opportunity to photograph them and that was that.
Fast forward to day one of the con and I had just stepped out of a panel with William Shatner only to look out over the balcony to find Steven and Millie taking selfies in the lobby. Cut to your girl running down three flights of stairs (lugging her gear bag behind her) to catch them. I am nothing, if not enthusiastic about snagging my subjects. Thus our first mini shoot was born and my friendship with them took off. Because the day AFTER that photo was taken, I posted it to my twitter and over the course of 24 hours it went VIRAL. 18k likes, 5k retweets and a retweet and comment by the Wonder Woman Director herself, Patty Jenkins. To top it all off, a week later Steven and Millie and our photo were featured on Mashable and The Chive! Needless to say, that Labor Day weekend became incredibly memorable for both the Cosplay Parents and I.
https://twitter.com/KatieBePhoto/status/904394171284197376
https://twitter.com/PattyJenks/status/904785780173717504
It was so insane watching all of this go down. I wasn’t really expecting the volume of likes this photo would garner and Steven and Millie certainly weren’t expecting the reception they were given. It was such a positive experience not only to see my work so well received and the outpouring of love for what the CosplayParents do but also for the friendship I made with Steven and Millie since then. I know viral things don’t always have a positive outcome but I’m thankful this one was.
Do you have any photos that are your favorite or that you really proud of?  This is such a hard question as each shoot is very special and like a mother, I can’t pick a favorite out of all my babies, but I would have to say one photo I’m very proud of is a shot I took during my very first WWxKtBe shoot. This shot of Julia in front of these tall buildings encapsulates what I wanted this Wonder Woman project to look like. Powerful and strong and ready to take on the world!
From beginning to now: How do you feel about how far you’ve come in your photography? Oh without a doubt I am leaps and bounds better than I was when I first started. I’ve learned so much in regards to how I use certain kinds of equipment, to looking at light, to posing my subjects, to how I edit things. Everyday I learn something new and that keeps this hobby fresh and exciting for me. I just love it.
We’ve talked briefly on this subject before. While hopping around conventions, we noticed a lack of female photographers. Many times you and I have been the only female photographers present at a comic book convention.  How do you feel about the need for more female cosplay photographers? Like every aspect of the workforce there is without a doubt a gigantic need for more female cosplay photographers! I think we as women bring a different view to photography then men might have. As an art form and as a community we should want to see different perspectives from women. I’m very inspired by the male cosplay photographers I follow and would relish the inspiration from up and coming female cosplay photographers as well!
Tell us the story of your Wonder Woman project? I walked into a movie theater with my best friend Briana on June 7th eagerly anticipating my first viewing of Wonder Woman. I was certainly pumped for what I had seen in the trailers despite not fully knowing what to expect. Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins didn’t disappoint. Fast forward nearly 2 and half hours later to Briana and I walking out of that theater changed women. I’ve always prided myself on being an independent woman who had all the things that make a woman walk tall. But after walking out of Wonder Woman for the first time I found myself walking taller and energized. Thank God there weren’t any tanks nearby because there was a VERY good chance I would’ve tried to pick it up ala the No Man’s Land scene.
But something wonderful triggered in my brain that night while Briana and I stood in the empty parking lot taking selfies in my Wonder Woman tiara. I needed to create and I needed it to be focused on this iconic female character and how important she is to strong and impassioned women (like me and the women I surround myself with). I decided that I wanted to start working on an open ended series of photoshoots with all kinds of Wonder Women cosplayers, revolving around the idea that no matter size, age or color we are ALL Wonder Women. This line of thinking is also the same through line to most of the photo work I’ve done since I seriously picked up a camera two years ago. I wanted to highlight all of Diana’s qualities in the women I worked with, effectively boosting their confidence along with the confidence of the women (and men!) who happened to find my photos. This project would also showcase all her different looks, be it from the film, the comics, the animated series or concept work. You name it, I wanted to photograph it. Thus the WWxKtBe (Wonder Woman times Katie Be) project was born.
Since then I’ve done a handful of shoots for this project, which can be viewed here, and I’m looking to do more. So, if anyone reading this is interested don’t hesitate to reach out!
What is a cosplay photo shoot like for you? What do you try to get out of your photo shoots? I try to make my shoots as easy, comfortable and informal as possible. Usually it’s me and my subject on location during the early morning. The first few shots are always the most nerve wracking for me but once those have gone off, it’s off to the races. There’s something really special about the time in the middle of the shoot where both my subject and I are really gelling. That’s the sweet spot for me. It’s when the best photographs happen because the real personality of the cosplayer comes out. Long story short, it’s plain and simple magic.
Every shoot I do I try to capture the person’s essence. Sure, you can capture the same poses you see from promo photos released from the tv show/movie/video game but to me it’s boring. I want to see the light and determination in a Wonder Woman’s eye as she’s about to step onto No Man’s Land and I want to see the mischief in the set of Deadpool’s shoulders as he’s sneaking up to photobomb someone. THAT is what cosplay photography is all about for me. The emotion. You can have all the fancy gear in the world but if the face is expressionless the photo lacks.
What are your feelings about convention photography? What is your approach to it? I think convention photography is a skill in and of itself. There’s so much going on and there’s so many people milling around. You really have to understand your gear and how to properly use it because sometimes you only get less than a minute to get your shot. I personally found it difficult to get the space I need to take a shot with the equipment I use daily and that’s kind of frustrating. However, on the positive end of things, there are SO many fresh faces you can meet and network with. This past LA Comic Con I got the opportunity to photograph with a few people who follow me on Instagram as well as people I’ve never met before. Normally I’m more of a one-on-one, location shoot kind of girl but I’m hoping to get more and more comfortable shooting within the confines of a convention.

Do you do other kinds of photography? I do! I’ve photographed weddings and families, headshots and landscapes. I love photographing everything and everyone!
What do you hope for the future of cosplay photography? I hope that the community continues to be inclusive no matter the skill set of the photographer and that more and more women start stepping behind the lens!
What new things can we hope to see from you in the coming year? More Wonder Woman shoots for sure. I also want to start stepping into fandoms I don’t normally photograph. I might not be familiar with the characters but that’s what makes it fun and challenging!
What advice do you have for new photographers out there? Keep photographing. Never STOP photographing. Take your friends out for mini shoots and practice, practice, practice. Look at what other photographers are doing and figure out what you like about their style and spin it to fit what you want your photographs to look like. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of other photographers and ask cosplayers to shoot with you. Watch as many youtube tutorials as possible. I’ve learned so much about editing from youtube it’s not even funny. Finally, just have fun, this is what art is all about, having fun!

To be fair they didn't really make her Mary Jane, she's MJ. They're clearly trying to change it up the character a bit which doesn't destroy the fact that the original Mary Jane exists as a red head. At the end of the day, marvel DOES have other red headed women like pepper and Natasha, but there really hasn't been much representation for people of color especially for women of color. Redhead MJ may be important to you, but isn't it also important other women get the chance to feel represented?
“MJ” is the name Mary Jane consistently goes by and it has been confirmed she is filling the role. It is MCU altering a character from the comics which is cool and was most likely done because it was done before. They wanted diversity and for consumers to not roll their eyes thinking there was another shitty spiderman movie with the same people. Harry Osborn was missing from the line-up, replaced by a supportive Ned. I was down for the changes as the film was developing (Michelle, Liz, Aunt May’s age, etc.) but the ending of the film where she informed them of her nickname was something that added some extra salt to my normal marinade.
As far as we know, Natasha does not have the same beginnings as she does in the comics, another change made by MCU as well as many others. They adjusted the casting of the “Ancient One” in Doctor Strange due to the conflicts in the areas of filming at the time. And quite honestly, I enjoyed the alteration of a woman being seen as the “Ancient One” with Celtic roots. (Celts and their forms of magic, witchcraft, and mysticism are hardly seen)
Yes, Pepper and Natasha are wonderful. Unfortunately, they were not the characters I grew love as much as the sarcastic, fun, spunky M.J. who happened to look very similar to me as she was drawn in the comics. She is a character I cosplayed and wrote quite frequently.
Yes, yes, everyone should be represented which has occurred more frequently in both the comics and MCU.  In a perfect world everyone would be happy, equally represented, never get offended and fart rainbows. Sadly, it’s not and people are ALLOWED to be unhappy which I was and I am still salty. Does it make me hate the character ? not at all. does it irk me ? sure. Zendaya’s performance was good and provided great comedic relief as well as many other great aspects to an amazing film. Does it make me hate the film ?  No. Does it make me want to boycott the company or the film ? No.
WOC have been present in Marvel Comics: Storm, Night Shade, Misty Knight, Spectrum, Derbii, Wildstreak, Silhouette, Lady Hawk, Samantha Wilson, RiRi Williams, Queen Divine Justice, Dora Milaje, Nakia/Malice, and Nekra. (those are some I can think of at the moment)
They would totally rock MCU and I would love to see them on the big screen or within their own series on Netflix like Luke Cage, Daredevil, etc. MCU has made leaps and bounds in terms of diversity and will continue to do so. I’m just not fond of them doing it while sacrificing other familiar characters from the comics the films are based on.
