You know what's gonna kill me when we get the inevitable Lu Guang flashbacks?

The fact he's always described as "mature" as his post-dive self implies he must be different now than before. It's hard to imagine exactly what his personality was like before, and if it's written well, he shouldn't be completely unrecognisable. But we know he's been changed.

Imagine a first timeline where Lu Guang just follows along with Cheng Xiaoshi, no attempts to reign him in whatsover. Cheng Xiaoshi having the opportunity to come up with more of his complicated tricks but channelling it into lower stakes stuff like pranks and Lu Guang actually enabling him in that and having fun with it. Imagine tragedy striking when Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi are both allowing themselves to be genuinely happy, no facades.

We know that Cheng Xiaoshi used to put on a brave face in light of his parents' disappearances and what that meant for how he was treated and what he was missing out on. But we also know that Qiao Ling and Lu Guang together have been able to lift that into something more genuine. Imagine a world where Cheng Xiaoshi was able to do the same for Lu Guang. Where they both mutually brought that light into the other's life.

It's still true to some extent in the current worldline, but it's complicated by Lu Guang's own actions. Lu Guang can never be fully honest with Cheng Xiaoshi without (in his mind) losing him forever. But he has to stick by his side in order to have any chance in his hopeless quest. And so, he must distance himself in other ways, protect Cheng Xiaoshi, enforce the rules. Swallow the guilt. It leads to a more lopsided relationship, one where one side is always hiding something from the other and refuses to open up themselves. A relationship that in the original timeline must have been more equal, as partners.

There's something that's been lost here, and it's not just the original Cheng Xiaoshi.

#I know it's definitely on the cards that lg didn't have a good childhood + that's why he latched so strongly onto cxs #but at the same time the comments about him being mature are such an obvious indicator that he's jumped already #that his og go around he was a lighter person. and that was lost with the original cheng xiaoshi. #link click #link click spoilers #shiguang daili ren spoilers #also. the current dynamic is lg trying to control all variables. giving instructions and cxs has to act them out. #when we know cxs can hatch plans himself and lg is observant enough to troubleshoot them + add details #lg only eased up on controlling everything late s1 + look where that led. The manhua is showing the fascinating side of Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi's relationship where LG clearly adores CXS BUT doesn't fully trust him to follow the plan so he actively HIDES some stuff - YET he also falls back and lets him handle it in really dangerous moments. I desperately want to know how he was before their tragedy. I daresay he actually used to trust his partner the way we see CXS trust him (albeit with a bit of a rebelious streak), but now he has secrets that feel impossible to share, and he's fumbling. hey link click fans just to make your day worse I'm pretty sure the entire last few episodes happened on lu guang's birthday

#LG's watch date stamp directly IDs 22 October for the early morning that S1 ended on. which means that it's also the day S2 starts on #so Cheng Xiaoshi jail time Lu Guang not-dead reveal etc. is all the 22nd. next timestamps are that evening w/ Chen Bin's phone #but chen bin dies that night. and capt Xiao gets a head wound. #the time between then and the funeral day isn't explicitly established iirc BUT. everyone dressed up. Xiao's bandanges were still bloody. #SO it stands to reason that if attendees got cleaned up then the bandages would have been changed unless they were new in the first place #also no way nothing happened between those two events if they were more than a day apart #so Chen Bin's funeral is the 23rd. probably. that's the main maybe-inaccurate point this is all dependent on. #ep3 ends on golden hour and ep4 starts on daylight and new outfits. so next day. Although not being so in the moment, the funniest scene in Link Click is when Cheng Xiaoshi possessed Lu Guang via photograph and had to deal with his own (original Cheng Xiaoshi's) impulsiveness and lack of forethought. started wondering why lg imprinted on og!cxs enough to go back and save him. came to the conclusion that cxs's impulsiveness in helping people would be a pretty good candidate given it's one of his key chara traits. and idk how likely it is at this stage so don't want to delve too deeply into it but the implications compel me so much.

lg imprinting on cxs directly mirroring ltc imprinting on lx. someone being cool because of how they just go for it as something to be admired. the way that lg's rules are basically aimed at stamping out cxs's intentions to interfere massively to help others. at what point do you change the person you're trying to save so much that they become unrecognisable. at what point do you change yourself in service of an aim until you're the antithesis of what you once admired.
