Summary: In a dystopian world, Keith took his small pleasures. His drives while dropping illegal goods. His ever-complaining mechanic and his low repair prices. The rare night with Shiro. He didn’t need more than that.
He definitely didn’t need Shiro’s dreams of saving everyone, of saving anyone.

“Jeez.” Hunk squatted down next to the dented motorcycle, his hand hovering over the metal like he didn’t know where to touch. Horrified, he looked up at Keith. “What’d you do this time?”
“Nothing unusual.” Keith shrugged, his hands in his leather jacket. Considering how fast he had driven to reach here, his black clothes stuck to his skin uncomfortably and he really wanted a shower. “You know how it is.”
“I don’t.” Hunk tied a dirty bandanna around his head. Keith was never sure if that was to protect his hair or if he just thought it looked cool; if it was the former, judging by the dirty overalls and grease stains on his face, it was a failed effort. “I thought transporters had to be careful.”
“Careful and quick,” Keith corrected, walking over to a side table. Pushing away the cigarette butts and bottle caps, he picked up a newspaper. Replicants Stage Coupscreamed the top headline. “And even then it’s hard to avoid the government dogs.”
Hunk tapped the side of the motorcycle and the pedal fell off with a loud clatter. Groaning, Hunk shot Keith a baleful glare. “Why? I give you a great bike and every single time you break it.”
“It’s either that or my life,” Keith pointed out. He flipped through the newspaper quickly, scanning headlines. Issues with the current president, interest rates rising again, a food shortage with no end. The same old fare, nothing at all unusual about the headlines. When Hunk didn’t say anything, he rolled up the paper with a sigh. “Sorry. I’ll be more careful next time.”
“…that’s what you always say,” Hunk grumbled, accepting the apology nonetheless. Pulling out his tool kit, he sat down next to the bike. “It’ll take a day or two to get in top condition.” Pointing a wrench at a grey box perched on a chair, he added, “Oh, and deliver that to Pidge while you wait.”
“Huh?” Keith crossed his arms. “Why would I do that?”
“Because you’re a transporter?” Hunk rolled his eyes. “It’ll be the easiest job you’ve had. Nothing dangerous inside, no one chasing you. Just do it.”
Keith raised a brow. “And how much are you paying me?”
“I’m fixing your bike.” He tapped the back threateningly with the wrench. “You wanna get stuck here forever?”
“Fair point.” Picking up the box, he almost dropped it in surprise. Considering his job, Keith was pretty strong but that would just barely help him with this package. “What do you have in here? It weighs a ton.”
“Spare parts, an engine to take a part, the usual things.” Already in work mode, Hunk absentmindedly waved him off. “Just get it to her today, she has a client.”

The streets were as dirty and crowded as ever, with throngs of people flowing to and from work. Or to and from the pleasure district, to be exact. Popup shops crowded every corner, offering anything from drugs to weapons to the latest stolen technology. Neon-coloured signs hung off various buildings, enticing pedestrians to enter.
Keith pushed his way forward, his gaze firmly fixed in front of him. He hadn’t missed any of this while he was on the road. There wasn’t really anything keeping him here, fixed to this city. Hunk was a great mechanic but they were a dime a dozen, one in every town. No, to be exact, every town was the same. The same grey, the same dirt, the sense of loneliness and loss.
A world in greyscale. The only time he saw colour was when he was racing down the highway, an illegal package in his satchel.

The bells chimed as he entered Pidge’s repair shop. A small space, squeezed into the very end of a depilated building, Keith had walked past it three times before spotting it. Inside, the white shelves were lined with the latest in limb replacements, fine technology that actually made it better to lose a body part than to have it.
“In the back,” Pidge called out cheerfully, followed by the sound of metal clicks. She was with a customer then.
“I swear your place gets smaller every time I come,” Keith said dryly. A lightbulb flickered as he made his way to the back room. Even the space between the shelves felt narrower than the last time he came.
“Or you’re just getting fatter,” Pidge shot back, a pleasing lilt to her voice. Someone was in a good mood today.
“Like that’s possible.” Keith snorted, waving a package as he entered Pidge’s unofficial clinic. “Hunk wanted you to have this.”
At one point, the room had probably been a manager’s room or something like that. Now there were curtains on windows and a long bed for the particularly strenuous limb repairs. Not that Pidge’s current operation seemed like one of those. Seated on a worn-out chair, she had her latest patient sitting across from her, his mechanical arm in her lap. A man with a streak of white hair. He glanced up and Keith almost forgot to breath.
Shiro.
Shiro was back.
“Must be the parts I ordered.” Still tinkering with the arm, Pidge glanced over her shoulder. “Just put it on the table, I’ll take a look after.”
“Sure.” Keith tore his eyes away from Shiro long enough to set the box down. Shiro was back. Trying not to sound overeager, he asked, “What happened to you?”
“The usual.” Shiro winced as Pidge tried to reconnect the arm. “There was a trap. We almost got caught.”
“And then your hand got caught instead,” Pidge chimed in, closing an eye as she examined her handiwork. “What’s this, the tenth replacement? There’s a reason you’re my best customer.”
“Eleventh,” Shiro corrected with a sheepish smile.
“Ugh. It’s a good thing I don’t paste my name on these babies, otherwise I’d be dead right now.” Pidge grimaced. Somehow, Keith didn’t think that would save her for too long. Her work was too advanced, too impressive, and all it’d take was a couple of questions to find out just who made the rebellion’s general’s arm.
Taking a deep breath, Keith finally turned around and gave Shiro a proper once over. Dressed in a tank top and sweat pants, it was easy to see that there were no injuries on him. There wasn’t any blood or bandages. A relief, considering it all. It was a rare time when Shiro got away with just a broken prosthetic. Noticing his stare, Shiro smiled. “We didn’t lose anyone, at least.”
That wasn’t what he was worried about. At all. Keith crossed his arms, his eyes roving over Shiro’s biceps, his well-defined chest, and trying not to remember what it felt like to have that body curled over his. To have those hands on him. “I didn’t think you did. There was nothing in the newspapers.”
“Yeah, I guess they’d mention it if they caught us.” Shiro lowered his gaze. “Especially if they caught Allura. The rebellion would be over in an instant.”
“Rebellion.” Pidge clicked her tongue, finally setting down her tools. “You’re making it sound better than just a rag-tag of people who still think they change something.”
“We can,” Shiro answered simply.
No, you can’t, Keith thought, and perhaps more so than the world they lived in, that was the real tragedy: hope.

This wasn’t love. This was sex, pure and simple. A raw need, a primal urge. A way to forget the present. A way to feel something other than despair.
Keith bit Shiro’s throat, feeling the resulting rumble tremor through this body. Shiro’s hand interlaced in his. His nails scratched on Shiro’s back. All he could smell was Shiro’s musky scent. All he could feel was Shiro’s touch. Nothing else existed—not the road, not the government, not the possibility of death.
“Keith,” Shiro moaned, but Keith didn’t say anything back. He refused to.
This wasn’t love and therefore, he didn’t have anything to lose.

Through the half-open blinds, neon lights spilled into Keith’s bedroom. It was a spartanly furnished room, consisting of just a bed and a table. And now, Shiro, who was lying face down in a pillow to block out the light. The pinks and oranges from the street signs painted Shiro’s pale back and Keith traced familiar patterns over the many scars that littered his partner’s skin. The one on his shoulder blade, from when he’d been thrown in prison for eight months. The one on his side, from when a gun had almost hit his stomach.
Propping his head up on his hand, Keith idly touched the scar on Shiro���s lower back. Hearing Shiro’s breathing change, Keith asked, “Why do you fight?”
For a long moment, he thought Shiro was going to pretend to be asleep. Instead, he finally turned over, the sheets tangling up around his legs as he stared up at Keith. His single white lock glowed in the dim light. “Because it’s the right thing to do.”
“There’s no right, not anymore. Not here.” Keith dismissed the argument entirely. That was old world crap. His nail scratched line left by a blade on Shiro’s chest.
“There’s always a right. Especially here, especially now,” Shiro countered, grabbing Keith’s hand. “If I don’t fight, then who will?”
“Someone else.” Keith lowered his eyes. They had this same discussion every time, this useless argument that never changed anything. Soon, Shiro would disappear again, off on some doomed rebellion plot or the other. Maybe he’d die this time, his picture plastered on the photos.
“There’s no one else.” Shiro tightened his grip, interlacing their hands. “Just us.”
And maybe that was true too. But Keith wouldn’t stay around to find out—if he was going to be left again, he might as well leave first. There was always something that had to be transported, some job that needed doing. He’d find one as soon as his bike was fixed.
Instead of answering, he pressed his lips on Shiro’s chest, his hand already reaching down. At least during sex, he didn’t have to think these useless thoughts.

“All done.” Hunk proudly wiped his greasy hands on a dirty towel and Keith wasn’t sure if his hands or the towel were dirtier than before. Holding onto the handlebars, he glared. “At least give it a few weeks before you break it.”
“No promises.” Prying the bike free, Keith gave it a once over. It looked almost new, except for the scratch on the side. “Impressive.”
“Of course it is! Who do you think you’re talking to?” Excited, Hunk tapped on the engine. “I also spruced up the engine a bit—it’ll go a little faster than before.”
“Nice.” Sling his leg over, Keith slipped onto the seat. Turning the key, the engine purred under him. “I’ll take it for a test spin.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll count the cash.” Hunk picked up the metal box Keith left by his workbench. “It’s all here, right?”
“Yep, paid in full.” Keith revved the engine and closed his eyes. Yeah, that sounded right. “Got a job lined up for tomorrow, so you finished just in time.”
“I finished exactly on time—I said I’d be done now!” Hunk rolled his eyes, popping open the box.
Pulling out of the garage, Keith felt his mood brighten. There was something about the open road, about the one thing, the one place where he wasn’t restricted. There was freedom in flying down the road, the wind in his hair, and nothing but an archaic vehicle to keep him safe. It was a simple happiness.
There weren’t too many of those anymore.

Shiro was still at his place when he returned, and that was an oddity. Keith had almost expected to find an empty bed, their usual arrangement. Instead, Shiro was brazenly sitting on his kitchen table, drinking a cup of coffee.
“You’re here,” Keith said, more a statement than a question.
Shiro looked just as surprised as he felt. “I thought you left.”
“I had to grab some supplies.” Keith set his helmet on the table. Shiro was drinking from the wolf mug. His favourite mug. Did Shiro know that?
“Oh.” Shiro’s fingers curled around the table’s edges. “I was just about to leave.”
“It’s fine.” Keith entered his bedroom. It was funny. Shiro’s scent still lingered on his sheets. Picking up his first aid kit, he glanced back at the kitchen. At Shiro’s back, at the weariness in his shoulders.
It wasn’t that easy to be optimistic, was it. It wasn’t easy at all. His feet moved automatically and before he knew it, his hand was on Shiro’s shoulder, squeezing it gently.
“Keith?” Shiro asked, looking up curiously.
“I’ll help,” Keith muttered. A pile of newspapers was stacked in the corner, remnants of him checking for any rebel news. Any sign that Shiro had died. He did that every time he arrived at a city and maybe it was time he stopped lying to himself. It wasn’t love but he would be heartbroken nonetheless if he just read about Shiro’s death and did nothing to stop it. Maybe he could show the futility of it all and drag Shiro out of the mess entirely.
“Keith…” Shiro smiled at him brightly and Keith swallowed.
It wasn’t love.
Maybe, if he said it enough times, his body would believe him.

See you in my sweater - Klancemas Day 1 & 2
So taking inspiration from seeing @kaokki klancetober from @monthlyklance I decided to combined days together seeing how I’ve got late rehersals and no motivation to write once I get home. I hope I can actually get through this, which now makes me glad I’m only doing 2 secret santas. So hopefully you enjoy this!
First snow/Sweaters
It was stupid, even though his friends said it wasn’t, it was actually really sweet, but it felt so stupid. It was just a sweater, it wasn’t like Lance hadn’t stolen other items of clothing from him, why did a sweater matter?
Well because for someone who didn’t give much thought to if he’d ever be in a relationship, there was one fantasy he wanted to live out with his significant other. It might of stemmed from watching his mom steal his dad’s favourite coat even if it was for a simple trip to the store, but he remembered the look on his dad’s face. Not one of possession but just the feeling when your significant other wears something that says, ‘I’m theirs’.
He had this overly large sweater made for him, his last name and the marking of his mom’s motorcycle gang, The Mamora Blades on the back since he was a teenager. He kept it clean and safe, opting the hand wash it then risk it shrinking in the washing machine. He loved how cosy he felt in it, but more than anything, he wanted his significant other to steal it and parade around wearing it.
It was so stupid but he wanted it more than anything.
Of course, now it helped that he had a significant other, Lance. Cousin to his brother’s boyfriend and also majoring in astrophysics, with a minor in marine biology (Keith had no clue what Lance was planning on doing with a major like that, but he wouldn’t judge), he and Lance hadn’t gotten off on the best foot at first. Lance got annoyed with how much Keith would beat him on grades for their shared classes and Keith thought he was a pompous frat boy who had no hope of graduating on time. It was thanks to Shiro and Adam they saw differently. Lance had gotten a mild concussion slipping down the stairs to their school’s local pub. If it hadn’t been for him almost passing out at their table, Lance would of pretended he was fine. While Adam took care of paperwork and such, Shiro left him in charge of making sure Lance didn’t pass out again.
Keith wasn’t sure how his lips got so loose from a mild concussion, but Lance spilled how he couldn’t choose between space and sea, how his parents were so worried that he’d drop out of college due to the stress of the two, how he felt like Adam was constantly worried over him, how much he couldn’t stand his room mate but he couldn’t be rude, because his best friend had a crush on his room mate’s sister. He also talked about how he felt like he was gonna be alone forever because his relationships never worked out because they didn’t like him, how he had a feeling no one really liked him and they were just putting up with him, how scared he was he was going to prove everyone right by failing to graduate. He had never realised that someone who always had that infuriating smirk on his face held all this negative feeling in him.
So Keith told him about how he his relationship with his mom was strained after his dad’s death and how the state tried to say she wasn’t a fit mother because of her motorcycle gang. How he let the anger get the best of him when people would bully him or tease him. How it was easier to not even try hard and fail, giving in to what people expected of him then sit there and listen to them accuse him of cheating. Of how he felt like he was a burden on Shiro. How he would run away from situations instead of just talking to the people he cared about because he was scared about what would be said.
After all their hidden things were aired, somehow it was easier to talk to each other. Not that Lance still couldn’t find a way to get on his nerves. Maybe it had been that moment where they depended on each other or maybe all the time they spent together after, but Keith could tell he was gaining feelings. Part of him wanted to run and hide like he always did, but Lance could tell when he was hiding something and he wouldn’t leave him alone till he confessed what it was.
“What, did you think I was gonna leave you because you have a crush on me? Too bad, I don’t know why my mind goes to you when I just wanna hang out with someone or just talk to about anything, but it does, so what does that say about me?”
It said he had a crush on him too when only during a movie a few weeks later, Lance who’d been using Keith a pillow, pushed himself up and kissed him suddenly.
“It’s all I’ve been thinking about for the past 2 weeks.”
That was that after. They had their moments where they’d fall back into the life long game of ‘who can get annoyed the fastest?’ but it suited them. Then that stupid fantasy came back to mind. With the weather getting colder, Lance had shown off the many sweaters his mother and grandmother made for him.
“But you live in Miami?” Keith had questioned.
“Excuse you, but when the cold front hits and it’s 70, that’s freezing to us.” was all Lance replied with.
it’s not like Lance could complain. The slightest amount of wind and Keith would go pulling out his face mask. Point was, Lance would always look so cosy in his sweaters and he wanted to see Lance in his sweater. His one special sweater. He had offered many opportunists for Lance to take it, but he’d get really shy and quite and Keith would just drop it.
“Well of course he does.” Adam had explained when Keith complained to him, “You have to be the first good relationship he’s ever had. He acts like he knows what he’s doing, but he doesn’t. He wants to steal you sweater, but he keeps saying how he doesn’t want you to get cold, seeing how you keep pulling out a face mask at the slightest chill.”
Ok fine, so his habits were putting a stall on his main mission, but he wasn’t going to give up. he’d see Lance in sweater no matter what. Well, except telling him about his fantasy. There was no way they were gonna pull that from him.

Keith woke up to the sound of buzzing. He slowly blinked his eyes open to see Lance’s brown hair blocking his vision. He pulled Lance closer, squeezing his fingers as he tried to make sense of what he was hearing. The fairy lights in Lance’s room was the only light he should have been seeing, but there was another. A cell phone.
Now Keith had a predicament. One hand was laced with Lance’s across his waist and his other was under a pillow with Lance’s head on top of it. He was kinda stuck. And the phone just wouldn’t stop buzzing. Then Lance’s own started up, the buzz as loud as it’s owner.
“Hmmm,” Lance whined, pulling his free arm out from under the pillow and rubbing at his eyes. “What is that?”
“Our phones. they’re going off.”
Lance untangled his fingers from Keith’s and pushed himself up to reach his cell phone. He blinked bleary at the screen, dimed to save his eyes. They brighten by whatever he saw. Keith watched confused as Lance threw the covers back and rushed to the window, pulling up the blinds.
“It’s snowing!”
“What?” Keith said, getting up to follow Lance to the window.
Small flakes of snow fell to the ground, already sticking to the ground.
“I’ve never seen snow before!” Lance said.
Keith wanted to question it but he remembered Lance was from Miami. Closest thing he’d probably ever seen to snow was sand falling down or the fake snow at theme parks.
“Wanna go out and see it?”
“Yeah! Grab me a coat, I’m gonna put my shoes on.”
Keith pulled on his coat he’d been wearing the day before and went to grab Lance’s jacket when he saw his sweater, close to falling off the bed. He glanced over at Lance who was focused on digging out his warmer shoes. He grabbed his sweater and headed for the door, shoving his feet into the shoes he left there.
“Ready?”
“Yeah!” Lance said, taking the sweater from Keith and pulling it on, mind fully focused on getting out of the dorm as quickly as possible.
Keith followed, holding the door open for people heading out behind him before he joined Lance, who stood at the top of the steps, staring at the sky. The sun shined off the snow and the flakes stayed in form in Lance’s hair. Lance looked amazing, even with the obvious signs of just waking up. He looked amazing wearing Keith’s sweater.
“It’s this amazing?” Lance asked, facing Keith, the melted snowflakes on his face leaving wet spots.
Keith wiped away the water for Lance. “Yeah, you are.”
Lance turned red, smacking Keith on the chest. “That’s not – I didn’t – ugg, just shut up!”
“And you look even more amazing in my sweater.”
Lance seemed to then realise what he was wearing. He struggled to see the back of it, Keith only seeing the last three letters of his name being pulled over Lance’s shoulder before Lance went red again and shoved at him, hiding his face in his neck, making him laugh.
“I hate you. Why the heck are you so insistent on seeing me in this?”
“No reason.” Keith said, wrapping his arms around Lance’s waist. “I just thought it would look good on you.”
Lance pulled away enough to stare at his boyfriend. “I hope you know you’re never getting this back then.”
Keith shrugged, struggling to push down the smile that was growing on his face. “Worth it.”

I WANNA’ BE ELECTED
“THE TIME I CADDIED FOR ALICE COOPER AND LIVED TO TELL ABOUT IT!!!”
I Wanna Be Elected! Well not really.
You see.... I was working at a shop that had been bought by Neil Lomax. He was a Portland native, who had graduated from P.S.U. and had a career in the NFL. The Cardinals to be specific. Which, had relocated to Phoenix Arizona in 88.
Home of J.F.A., The Meat Puppets and the great Mighty Sphincter. Oh and George Lynch, and Rob Halford. And the one and only Alice Cooper.
Now, almost everyone knows that Alice is a serious golfer.
And that’s where we are going with this story. Not really a Rock and Roll story except for when I hound him with trivia questions, later.
So, back to Neil. Super sweet man and excellent human being. He was heading to play a golf event that Alice would be at, in Phoenix one weekend, and he said, “Hey Dean, going to see your buddy Vince Fernier. See, Neil actually thought his name was ALICE COOPER. I corrected him one day and he loved VINCENT. He even came back from this event with a framed Hatch Show Print poster of the event. He let us display it in the shop when he got back. I was hoping he didn’t care for it and would part with it. But alas, my reward was yet to come. He actually had another golf tournament and I sent him down with a copy of Killer.
It came back signed and I was stoked. But there would be more....
So, then Its Neil’s turn to have his big golf event “The Quarterback Shootout”.
It’s an annual charity event he is really known for in Portland.
A meet and greet with NFL legends and local celebs. The big ones I can recall are Drew Bledsoe, Marcus Allen, Charles Barkley, Jim Plunkett.
Having worked with Neil for a while, he had events and people would help and volunteer from work. The big event was this golf thing. Everyone fought over caddying for Charles Barkley. He was big tipper. The real cool thing was, this year Alice was coming up for it as a favor to Neil. No one at work was stepping up to caddy for him. What I knew about golf fit into a golf tee.
I imagined me out there fumbling around and dropping clubs to the sound of all that iron clanging and people laughing. So I was petrified, to say the least, when it was decided that I was going be Alice Cooper’s caddy.
They demanded that the “residential rocker” at work, handle this rock royalty on the links.
Well the thought of me on a golf course was as foreign to my mind as being a surgeon, so I spent the morning getting ferociously stoned at home. The event was held at Heron Lakes Golf course and I lived pretty close. I got to the golf course and met up with everyone from work and just kinda waited.
Some people were already on the part where you tee off and practice. The driving range?!?!? You can see I’m out of my element here!
Anyway, we are kinda waiting for our assigned celebs to show up when a car pulls up, out comes this really petite person. All in black with their back to me. I was unable to make out who it was. They turn around and it’s Alice. People cheer and they hand me his clubs. This is the first time I have EVER held golf clubs. I used a golf bag for my drum stands to carry to many clubs, but this was the first time the had actual clubs in it.
He signs some stuff and is escorted my way, and I’m on the driving range. The first thing I tell him after we are introduced is “Alice, there is NOTHING I can tell you today to help you in any way on the course today!!!” He smiled and said “ I think I got it.”
That put me at ease right away.
We made our way to a practice area of sorts and already, people were coming up for autographs. I got the impression I would be doing a little security work today as well.
That was no problem actually since I had done set security on movie sets and all sorts of events. And he was approached by all sorts of people. Old, young, and everything in between. The first person I remember to approach held out a cassette and said “I took your music to Vietnam with me!” Alice stopped on a dime and just talked right to the guy. Not to/at him, but TO HIM!!!.
I could tell right away that this dude was genuine. Little kids with Todd McFarlane/Alice Cooper dolls would come up and he would sign the smallest signature. Taking time with everyone he took a photo with. He had a line for everything. After the photo was snapped he would say “Now, I may not show up in the picture when you get it developed.” He was, in a word “PROFESSIONAL”
This is a guy who hung out with Harry Nelson, Keith Moon, Salvador Dali.
I mean, he was on the Muppets for cryin’ out loud!!!
I know we were paired up with Jim Plunkett and played against Drew Bledsoe and Rick Mirer. Jim was an old school NFL dude and was here to have a good time. Drew Bledsoe did some things that day that I thought really were uncool. For someone being asked to a charity event, to sign autographs and take pictures, he was acting like he was being put out. It was interrupting his game. That was the whole point of this thing. You could saddle up next to the celebs and say hi and a bit more. It’s what they paid for, quite frankly.
He was taking his golf game a little too serious if you ask me. Jim and Alice had wagers going as to who could drive the ball the farthest and stuff like that. Alice was a petite guy and Jim was a bigger dude.
Alice won the drive contest.
The main thing that I took a way that day was answers to a load of questions that I had. Some prepared and most just off the top of my head.
As I relate some of these, just realize, that I’m paraphrasing what was said. He was so totally open and honest with me, it was quite staggering to be honest. I would feel horrible if anything was misinterpreted.
I started by asking about Johnny Rotten doing the liner notes on a Rhino Box set and he said “Johnny hates EVERYONE.... EVERYONE! Except ME! I can’t believe it.
I guess him and Sid used to play Dead Babies on acoustic guitars to make pocket money.”
I was like, Oh, it’s on! We proceeded to hole one, and I started chronologically with his career and headed back to Detroit. I asked about Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, MC5 and Iggy. He said “I’ll open for anyone! The Stones! The Who! But not Iggy! He just wipes the crowd out. Uses them up and wrings em’ out, and I can’t come on after that.”
I asked about his song “Only Women Bleed” and he said that was a number one multiple times, multiple countries, for multiple people.Tina Turner had a hit with it and he was proud of that.
I asked if he was a WHO guy or a STONES guy. He said “Listen to the opening of Elected.”
DUH!!!
