Mike will ‘come out’ to his mother (prediction/theory)
Tumblr media
This theory began when I saw this post, which mentioned how Mike and Karen wore nearly identical shirts in s3- with the caption “Like mother like son”. So I went back to analyze the scenes where they wore these clothes to see if there was some form of symbolic importance . So let’s breakdown why I believe Mike will come out to his mother.
Karen at a young age,  married an older man, who was the ‘safe-conventional option’ .
He had everything that people told girls in the 50s  they SHOULD want. He was older, had money, stability, and came from a good family- so Karen chose to marry him, for stability and public image. Nancy even says in s1 “I don’t think my parents ever loved each other. My mom was young. My dad was older… but he had a cushy job, money, came from a good family. So they bought a house at the end of the cul de sac and started their nuclear family”. But now Karen feels trapped (by abiding by societies expectations of her) and is now in a loveless marriage and is merely staying for her kids happiness. She tells Billy , “I have a family I can’t do anything that would hurt them.”
Karen has resigned herself to her fate. She is a cautionary tale , and she hopes her children don’t make the same mistakes as her.  She tells Nancy, her other child “ People always say that you can’t that you shouldn’t…this world, it beats you up again and again until eventually I-
Tumblr media
“…most people they just stop trying. But you’re not like that, you’re a fighter. You always have been. I honestly don’t know where you get it from.”
Nancy: ‘”I get it from you.”
Karen :” Well, where-ever you get it I’m proud of you. That you stood up to those shit-heads.
Nancy: “Mom?!” (shocked and impressed)
Karen: “Yes those shit-heads!”  She says this with tears in her eyes, . Mike  also says “shit” like 8 times this season. One example was to the mindflayer/Billy “go to hell you piece of shit”).  And Nancy’s catchphrase since s1 has always been “bullshit!” They really do take after their mother.
Tumblr media
Karen: “If you believe in this story… finish it.”
Mike: Is also trapped in a het-relationship that at a time would be perceived as the healthier- rational-conventional choice.
The fact, El and Ted both love the same laz-boy chair is another parallel, that both Karen and Mike are in loveless relationships. He tries to ignore his feelings for Will because “people tell you, you shouldn’t , you can’t”. He wears almost the same yellow shirt ( that Karen wore during the speech to Nancy) . Mike yells  “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls” then sees Will’s face and immediately regrets saying it, and tries to ½ apologize.Mike literally closes his eyes and takes in a deep breath before trying to explain and rationalize what he meant.
”I’m not trying to be a jerk. Ok?
Tumblr media
He pretty much explains, this is just the way things are-boys fall in love with girls, get girlfriends, and that’s just a part of growing up, as people/society has told them over and over (heteronormativity).
BUT We’re not kids anymore.” I mean, what did you think, really? That we were never gonna get girlfriends? We were just gonna sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?”
-When he confesses to El : “They do say it makes you crazy…A feeling … yeah, like, something… like OLD PEOPLE say it sometimes”.
His reaction to the breakups pretty much tells us his true feelings, he wants to be in love with El, because that’s what society says is best (and what he think is a part of growing up), and what would be best for his public-image. But his actions speak louder than words.
Tumblr media
I don’t think it was a coincidence after Mike lost Will twice the first person he goes to for understanding and comfort is his mother. Did I mention I STAN Karen with all my heart and soul! XD
Tumblr media
- And Mike and Karen’s s1 discussion may be foreshadowing of Mike coming out to her in the future. The first time I watched it, it reminded me of a (good)coming out.
Karen: “I’m not mad at you.”
Mike: “No?”
Karen: “No, of course not!”
Karen : “All this that’s been going on with Will, I can’t imagine what it’s been like for you. I just … want you to feel like you can talk to me. I never want you to feel like you have to HIDE anything from me. I’m here for you okay?” (she even emphasizes the word ‘hide” - which is heavily queer coded). It reminded me of a parent being supportive of a coming out! She even holds his hand after this statement! But Mike lies right after this and goes back to see El (who was in his closet). He wasn’t ready for THAT discussion. But one day he might be… (hell the way Mike shyly/nervously avoids eye contact during the whole conversation only to nod unsurely at the end- makes the subtext even more clear).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I’m not the only one who thought Karen’s reaction ( that awkward blink) to Ted’s joke about Mike ‘not being with a girl’ meant something… right?
Tumblr media
Maybe (in s4) Karen will be getting divorced and give Mike advice to follow your heart (instead of what people expect of you, and not make the same mistake as her)- and this spurs his coming out.
And if you say about the shirts , “it’s not that deep, sis” or “you’re reaching.”
UM... Do you guys not remember how the Duffers used a literal blue hair-tie/bracelet to connect Hopper to his daughters?!!!!
Sarah after losing her hair due to chemo, couldn’t wear her blue hair tie anymore. So Hopper turned it into a bracelet which he wore on his wrist in every episode (for the first 2 seasons) starting from s1 ep 1. However, when Hopper (in the last ep of s2) received the official paperwork making El his daughter- the very next scene with El had her wearing Sarah’s blue bracelet. This was to signify that Hopper finally accepted El as his daughter , which is why he was willing to give the blue bracelet “back” to his daughter. All of s3 El wears the blue bracelet- and right before Hopper ‘dies’ we see Hopper and El holding hands (as the bracelet is wrapped around both their wrists) connecting them. And in the last ep of s3 , we see that El still wears the bracelet, and starts to wear Hopper’s flannel shirts again (despite getting a makeover) as a way to feel closer to him again. And the shirt she’s wearing is also THE SAME SHIRT from s2, which she holds tight to her chest thinking of Hopper!
Tumblr media
So yeah, thinking these yellow shirts with vertical stripes - symbolize a connection between a parent and a child isn’t that far-fetched. XD

The ‘no one talks to each other until they all have to come together to fight the big bad! And then the all immediately split to Scooby Do it up’ was cute and nostalgic and funny in S1. The kids V the world, the teens in the monster movie, the adults in a horror movie. I got it! I followed it and I loved it!
It was stessfull and added unneeded tension to S2. The kids hunting for dart, Will being possesed and the adults and Mike leaving to help Hopper and being trapped in the lab, Nancy and Jonathan going rouge again without telling ANYONE ANYTHING only to stumble upon the crazy later, Eleven’s weird ass adventure with added human villian Kali. I saw why, and I did also enjoy it but the trope got old and in the end it was a fucking miracle they all made it out alive, and they should have learned!
In S3 it’s the direct killer of Hopper and Billy. Why were the subplots so important? Joyce and Hoppers’ lover quarrel, why tf did Joyce care so damn much about magnets KNOWING what happened last year, she went off and discovered Russians and instead of Jim calling Murrary in they go on this wild ride adventures leaving their kids KNOWING crazy shit is happening! Nancy and Jonathan’s lover quarrel interfering so much with a team we’ve seen work amazingly together who could have figured it out faster together than appart! Why didn’t Nancy IMMEDIATELY go to Mike and El when she saw the old woman eating dirt and wanting to go back, why wait and go to the hospital, Will talked like he wasn’t alone and she knows exactly what ‘LET ME GO LET ME GO LET ME GO!’ sounds like. Why wait. Why were these more important than the main plot! Why was Dustin thrust to the Scoop Troop when he should and could have been with the Party seeing possesed Billy and getting Steve and Robin to help! Was it all just to postpone the inevitable? Why didn’t they all converage together, after shortened versions of the Scoop Troop and driving Dr. Alexei and deal with the problem BEFORE the Battle at Starcourt. The adults easily could have come up with a better plan to hold Billy, they could have removed the head pawn from the MF’s army, they could have saved El from being hurt, they could have done so much more. If they wanted Billy dead he still could have gone through with a partial exorcism and then he could sacrificed himself in the end, but it would have been more built up and emotional. I’m a Billy hoe and I cried more for Alexei than I did for Billy in the immediate death scene. If they wanted Hopper dead and for us to cry with El, they should have had Hopper being there for El more, showing her he cares other than yelling at her and threatening her boyfriend before returning to stroke her hair and tell her she’s the best fighter of them all. She should have been there when he died, he’s been with her for everything esle but she finds out alone in a parking lot!?!?! They could have done so fucking much! And still had religated Steve to comic relief, had their kid relationship drama, given me the heebie-jeebies with Karen/Billy but then given us a more emotionally strong, and fully developed show. They had two fucking years.
S4 better not have this weird no one talks to each other unless they’re fighting with each other because honestly they’re gonna have to kill Will or El or someone else in the Party to even make it worth it in the end because this wasn’t it! The trope isn’t cute or nostalgic anymore, it’s beating a dead horse. Move on DBros, let the 80s horror movie formula go and come up with a better story telling device.

Thoughts on the Revenge sequel
For those who haven’t seen the news, ABC has put into development a Revenge sequel.
What we know for sure...
* Mike Kelley (the creator of Revenge and its showrunner for S1 and S2) and Joe Fazzio (writer and producer of Revenge) are writing the reboot script and producing the show.
* The premise is as follows, from The Hollywood Reporter: “The central character, a young Latinx immigrant, will be guided by a character from the original series. The story follows the lead as she arrives in Malibu to take down a pharmaceutical dynasty whose greed led to the murder of her biochemist mother, the destruction of her family and a global epidemic.”
* Also per The Hollywood Reporter, no actors are currently attached (though, I mean, come on...we all know which original character MK is getting to serve as her guide...more on that below...).
* Per TVInsider, Emily VanCamp (Emily/Amanda) heard about the reboot from MK and JF a month ago and she already knows which character is coming back, though she won’t say anything except this: “I can’t say who, but they’re bringing back a specific person, and I love that specific person. So, it’s exciting.”
* Nick Wechsler (Jack) tweeted the news of the reboot with “Holy shit, right?” and his post was RTed by Gabriel Mann (Nolan).
Okay, so my thoughts below...
I’m cautiously excited about this.
“Cautiously” because, obviously, if they’re only just working out the script and aren’t ready to make announcements on actors, this could go any number of ways -- lots of shows are developed but never make it to air. So it’s not worth talking about this as a sure thing until/unless ABC announces that it’s picked up the show for the 2020-2021 season.
But aside from that, I see a lot of reasons to be optimistic, starting with the involvement of MK. For everything that went wrong in S2 and led to MK exiting the series, we know that he loves this world and these characters...I would have hated to see a sequel to the show without his involvement or, at the very least, his blessing. It looks like he’s steering the ship, and right now, I’m taking that as a good sign.
I’m also hoping that MK’s involvement means that he and ABC, based on the experiences of S1-S4 and especially S2, know exactly what this show should look like and have a clear plan. (I’m going to speculate that there’s a chance that whatever this series looks like that it’ll have far fewer than 22 episodes in its first season, just based on comments MK has made in the past about his preference for fewer episodes in a season.)
As for the story, it’s hard to tell for sure with such limited details, but the plot sounds like a good one -- it’s close enough to the original’s juicy premise (young woman goes up against a powerful family to avenge the death of a parent, which is also tied to a major tragedy), but this time with different particulars, starting with the new main character, who will have her own backstory and a new set of story-beats to play out and new relationships to explore with those in her past, present, and future.
It also seems pretty obvious to me that the new lead’s mentor is going to be Nolan and they’re just waiting to announce GM’s involvement. It makes perfect sense given where we left Nolan at the end of S4, and I’m so excited to see what MK’s got in store for him. How does Nolan become involved with his new protege? What kind of relationship will they have -- friendly or prickly? What has he been doing in the last few years? Has he found a new love interest, or will he find one on the sequel? Has he maintained ties with anyone else from the Hamptons (besides, of course, Emily and Jack)?
Speaking of which, I’ve seen a lot of comments online from fans who don’t want a Revenge without EVC and all of the original cast members. I get that sentiment because I love them, too, and of course I want to see as many of them back as possible, even if in limited/guest star capacities.
However, bringing Emily back as the lead or even in a substantial role would, I think, be a harder sell. Not just because EVC is busy on The Resident, but because we saw how Emily’s story ended...she finally found peace and happiness with Jack and Carl in a post-Graysons world. I wouldn’t want to see the character be yanked away from that, especially when MK has a new story to tell with a new lead, who will need the time and space to be properly established as a character in her own right.
Besides, just because Emily is off living a revenge-free existence doesn’t mean that we’d never be able to see the other characters either popping in and out or in more substantial roles. MK and ABC surely know the value of getting back as many familiar faces as possible. (That’s why they’re bringing back Nolan “character from the original series,” after all.) If they can figure out a way to, say, bring back Charlotte, or Ashley, or Mason Treadwell, I’m sure they’ll do it. Those characters are MK’s own creations, and they’re blank enough slates that he could easily make them somehow involved in some branch of this new conspiracy.
And, of course, EVC sounds excited about the show, and we’ve got public comment from NW on it, so maybe there’s a chance for them to guest star every once in awhile if their schedules allow. (More of Emily, Jack, and Nolan together? Yes, please.)
So, basically...I’m just really curious to see where this goes. Hopefully it won’t be long before they finish the script and start casting for the pilot.
Anyone with any thoughts, please come by my ask box!
