have we ever thought abt the fact that zuko is literally azula's older brother. like she's his little sister. that's his little sister. throughout a big, big part of atla plot, he was actively running away, scared of his little sister killing him because he KNEW she would/could. can you imagine that? your little sibling, wanting more your father's approval than your companionship to the point of death? every time they fought, zuko was fighting his baby sister. azula was fighting her big brother. this is making me so sick. they were 16 and 14 years old.

give me redeemed!azula who is still mean, but only out of habit, and has to stop herself from starting fights at the dinner table because she said that ursa’s roast duck was so undercooked zuko must have prepared it.
the only two people she doesn’t insult (or at least, she does her best to stop herself) are aang and sokka. aang because he’s been the kindest person to her since her breakdown and recovery, and she feels like she’s disappointing him whenever she’s mean in front of him. sokka because he’s funny. she used to insult him yea but he’s been teaching her how to roast loved ones.... lovingly.
(side-note: she is, in fact, mean to kiyi, but kiyi loves it and is mean right back to her. azula and azula 2. gremlins united.)

Thinking how Azula can lightbending which means she's calm of mind and out of rage when bending and she do it many times! Even when on pressure!
Truly a prodigy.
And then in the comics she can now do sparky and redirect it and instantly bend as well (few of the thing that I like from the comics).
And even on a break down clearly not calm of mind and with a lot of rage she is still able to lighting bend, like wow.
Imo she's like THE best firebender in Atla time. Clearly she needs more experience but I feel she's is better than Ozai cuz that man literally doesn't fight till the damn comet comes and even still he's barely that good, he fight with anger and that's like... So Zuko, like no wonder he sees himself in Zuko, both of them are so average while Azula is just so good.
Like she was on her WORST in that Agni Kai and still Zuko was struggling a little bit and he was IN HIS BEST, THAT WAS THE BEST WE EVER SAW HIM.
I'm sorry but Azula by the time she's like 18 would be unstoppable cuz the way she sees other types of bending and USE IT WITH HER OWN BENDING? And she doesn't only use her bending, she can fight without it too!
I need an Azula spin off where is just her fighting, I miss her so much

Finally got around to finishing Netflix's ATLA adaptation. I have a LOT of notes, but I think the biggest one is this:
At the end of Season 1 of the original, Aang had at least started learning waterbending alongside Katara, and a little bit of Firebending with Jeong Jeong. Outside of the Avatar State, he had at least started 3/4 elements.
By the same point in NATLA, he's only at 1/4. I don't think this kid has bent a single drop of water. So far he is just a *really* good airbender who can do some spirit world stuff. That should give you a good idea as to why I have a few issues with it.

is it still cool to be a netflix atla hater bc i want to point out how weird it is that they seemed to try making ozai a more "interesting" character by making him more sympathetic and how much it bothers me. like. why is zukos agni kai the scene where we try to shift focus onto ozai's emotions. why are we lingering on his face looking sad while he's horrifically mutilating his 13 year old son like someone is forcing him to do it

i don’t talk enough about how much i enjoy the parallels and dynamic between sokka and azula where they are incredibly similar -- both incredibly intelligent, master strategists, witty, control freaks, insecure -- and the understanding that grants them of each other. or would, if azula was ever willing to let go of fire nation propoganda and her own superiority complex long enough to relate to someone. i think it would be fun to watch them play pai sho against each other. sokka would win, of course, but thats what would make it even more fun.

the first step ursa and azula take to soothing the severed parts of their relationship involve ursa making azula laugh.
its like a crab shedding the old shell and getting a new one, azula thinks. mother had been tense and paranoid as they made their way out of caldera city, through the colonies, onto a supply ship, and across the ocean for three whole days. then they finally landed in some random earth kingdom harbor and started walking. it wasn’t until the ocean was finally out of sight and they were surrounded by nothing but trees and dirt that mother relaxed.
and how strange is that? azula hadn’t realized that she’d never seen what her mother looks like while relaxed, until she did. it reminds azula to unclench her own jaw and loosen her own tight fists.
azula isn’t worried, though. there isnt a single man walking the earth kingdom that packs as much of a punch as lu ten does, after all. what’s a bunch of mud and rocks to lightning?
however, lu ten has been working himself like a dog picking up day long jobs and favors for any person they come across to make extra coin. they still have plenty left from the jewelry and gold trinkets they traded at the port town, but lu ten is someone that likes to be overly prepared, so he does it anyway. and on top of that, he does katas and sparring with her and zuko every morning at sunrise to make sure they shake some sparks out. until they can find a place that they know for sure they’ll be settling down in, the bending will have to be kept at a low.
so, mother tries to ease his burdens by cooking.
mother quickly discovers that she is no good at cooking.
apparently, even before being wedded to father, she had never been in a situation where she needed to cook for herself. then the servants at the palace cooked for her. but now there are no servants.
zuko took a handful of the rice mother prepared, and spat it right out. he then claims he bit down on a rock.
the sheer dismay on mother’s face combined with the disgust on zuko’s were the funniest things azula had seen in weeks.
she cackles like a hyena-lynx, and doesn’t even notice how her mother turns to her, her dismayed expression shifting to wonder.

You know Azula is one antagonist of the show, she attacks and hunts the gaang, Zuko&Iroh. She is not Zuko's abuser. She still is a villain and the "she is Zuko's abuser otherwise she wouldn't be bad/ you need to have done wrong things to get a redemption" argument doesn't fly, since her attacking the gaang,Zuko, fighting for the fire nation is what makes her a antagonist in the show and not your random ass she is Zuko's abuser BS. Her not being his abuser doesnt take away from her wrong doings lmao. Also their example of siblings are Iroh&Ozai and Lo&Li

The argument against Azula getting a redemption arc being “she’s already great as a villain! why would you want to ruin that?” is one of the most brain-dead takes in the fandom, because completely stagnating her growth as a character just because she worked fantastically as a villain does nothing but actively make her worse now. Look at Smoke & Shadow. That’s not the villain y’all are talking about when you talk about Azula, but that’s what you‘ve got. Not every villain needs a redemption arc, but every villain needs an arc, because that’s how story writing works. Leaving Azula as she is now is just insulting & does nothing for the overall narrative other than have a ‘crazy evil girl’ to mildly inconvenience the main cast every now and again.
And y’know, since Azula & Zuko’s stories are so closely linked to one another’s, Azula getting her redemption arc with the help of Zuko, who helps her as Iroh helped him - that would also be more growth and progression for Zuko.
