46° FESTIVAL DI MONTE CARLO... UNA GIURIA STORICA! A poche ore dall'inizio del 1° spettacolo di Selezione del 46° Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo, un'altra anteprima. Ecco l'elenco dei giurati della Giuria Tecnica Internazionale che quest'anno ha una valenza storica particolarmente significativa. E' composta infatti da personalità che hanno contribuito in prima persona o con le rispettive famiglie alla nascita e allo sviluppo del Festival in questi 50 anni dalla sua fondazione. Come è noto il Principe Ranieri ha potuto realizzare il suo progetto di una manifestazione sul circo con risonanza mondiale grazie all'entusiasmo e al supporto di alcune grandi dinastie europee che nel 1974 e negli anni immediatamente successivi hanno sposato e supportato la sua idea con contributi artistici e logistici indispensabili. Dunque comporranno la giuria: - Joseph Bouglione (Francia), Cirque d'Hiver Bouglione - Liana Orfei (Italia) - Flavio Togni (Italia) - Yasmine Smart (Inghilterra) - Fredy Knie (Svizzera) - Alain Frére (Francia) Ricordiamo che il Festival vide la luce nel 1974 sotto lo chapiteau della famiglia Bouglione; nel 1975 fu la famiglia di Liana, Nando e Rinaldo a prestare le proprie strutture, mentre dal 1976 al 1986 tutta la parte logistica e la direzione tecnica venne svolta dalla famiglia di Ferdinando Togni che mise a disposizione anche i propri chapiteau, fino alla progettazione della tensostruttura definitiva commissionata e progettata da Enis Togni e realizzata dalla ditta Canobbio. Yasmine Smart fu Madame Loyale, a fianco a Sergio, nella presentazione del Festival del 1975 e partecipò con le sue esibizioni equestri a 3 diverse edizioni del Festival (1981, 1985 e 1992). La Knie oltre ad essere una delle famiglie più presenti al Festival con varie specialità (dalle riprese comiche di Rolf Jr. con Gaston e Pipo, alle tigri di Louis, dagli elefanti di Louis e poi di Franco, ai cavalli di Fredy, Geraldine, Maria José e poi la nuova generazione...) con tre Ori e due Argenti, ha anche curato la regia e la direzione di pista dal 1990 al 2000 circa, subentrando ai Togni quando lasciarono l'Europa per i due anni con Ringling. Flavio Togni, non serve ricordarlo, è l'artista più premiato al mondo nella storia del Festival con un Oro e tre Argenti, uno dei più presenti al Festival, sin dalla 1° edizione, dove con i cugini Tommy, Loris, Elvit e Gabriella gareggio con il numero di alta scuola dei Togni Junior. E Alain Frerè, ancora oggi consigliere artistico del Festival che ha co-fondato in veste di amico e fidato collaboratore del Principe. Cosa volere di più??

Dante, infatti, è tornato dal passato e appare determinato nel voler distruggere la famiglia, eliminandone un componente dopo l’altro.

Dante non è altri che il figlio del boss brasiliano della droga Hernan Reyes, che tempo prima era stato ucciso da Dom e dai suoi. Dopo aver trascorso gli ultimi dodici anni a preparare il suo piano vendicativo, Dante è pronto a sfidare Toretto in campo aperto, in una lotta senza quartiere dalla quale potrà emergere soltanto un vincitore.

There was a tiny dead creature on the concrete pad outside the back door one morning. At first it looked just like an earthworm. But it wasn’t a worm. It was a little smoother and more sparkly. If you bent down and looked really carefully, it had tiny, tiny scales.

So it was a reptile. Probably. But what sort? It had no eyes, and it was difficult to tell which end was the head, and which was the tail. It certainly wasn’t something you see every day in Gentilly. Even if you’re really into backyard lizards and toads and such, this was something special, something strange.

So strange that it didn’t show up in the yellowing 1975 second edition of Peterson’s Field Guide to Reptiles on the bookshelf, which is the bible of all things with forked tongues, claws and scales.

Peterson’s listed something called a Texas Blind Snake, that more or less fit the bill, but it didn’t live any nearer to New Orleans than Dallas Cowboys football fans.

At times like these, one naturally turns immediately to social media, posting close-up photos of the mysterious 5-inch creature, proposing possible identities, and soliciting opinions from one’s digital hive of Facebook friends and followers. Including, it turns out, certain jazz musicians.

Musical connection

Louis Prima Jr. immediately replied via Facebook. The trumpeter was certain that one of the members of his band could explain everything about the mystery snake. This dude could explain any creepy-crawly thing.

Prima is the son of the late, legendary French Quarter-born fireball Louis Prima, who was a jazz-era superstar. He was the “Old Black Magic” dude, the “I Ain’t Got Nobody Dude,” the ORIGINAL “Just a Gigolo” dude.

Though Louis Jr. didn’t set out to follow in his dad’s footsteps, he was eventually bitten by the frontman bug. Back in 2004, he formed a band that performs some of his dad’s songs as well as eclectic covers and original compositions. Louis Prima Sr. would probably be proud of how well the kid channels his shot-out-of-a-cannon energy.

But what does this have to do with a tiny snake cadaver in Gentilly?

Reptile-loving trombone player

When driving between gigs, Louis Prima Jr. likes to ride with trombonist Philip Clevenger. Because he’s such an interesting conversationalist.

“In the music industry there are so many characters,” Prima said, “and he’s one,”

Pop musicians are, of course, known for their eccentricities and excesses, especially while touring. Clevenger is no exception.

Often, when the band has stopped to rest and refuel along the highway, Prima said, Clevenger disappears into the woods, camera in hand. When he returns, he shows off photos of the salamanders or turtles he spotted during his travels. He knows all their names and characteristics.

Once or twice, Prima said, the band has forgotten Clevenger and driven off without him, having to circle back for the straying trombonist.

“Half of me is herpetology and half of me is music,” said Clevenger of his twin passions, “I’m a reptile nut.”

So, when Prima saw a social media post from a New Orleans acquaintance seeking to solve a scaly mystery, he knew exactly whom to consult.

Clevenger, who hails from the Mojave Desert in California, was the first to positively identify the worm-like serpent as a Brahminy Blindsnake, a strange species which originated in Africa and Asia, but which has spread to America and Australia too. The miniature reptiles, Clevenger explained, are also known as Flowerpot Snakes, because they stow away in the soil around imported tropical plants.

One of the wildest things about Brahminy Blindsnakes, Clevenger said, is that they’re parthenogenic. That is, they don’t have to have sex to reproduce.

He’s right. According to the Florida Museum Snake ID guide, all Brahminy Blindsnakes are female. All of them. “Therefore,” the website explains, “unfertilized eggs begin cell division without sperm from a male.”

“I’ll tell you what,” Clevenger said to a gentleman journalist, “if humans figured that out, you and I would be a little endangered ourselves.”

A mysterious worm-like reptile, the Brahminy Blindsnake, is said to somehow reproduce without sex. The smallest snake in the United States, it is also known as a Flowerpot Snake, for its habit of stowing away in exotic plants, thereby spreading to warm areas around the world.

We went on up to the Audubon Zoo

Brahminy Blindsnakes are not endangered. Far from it. Audubon Zoo reptile curator Robert Mendyk said they’re the world’s most widespread snake, and are “really common in the Southern United States.”

“These guys seem to have found a niche,” he said.

Mendyk said people would probably be surprised at how many Brahminy Blindsnakes are in their yards right now. They’re not well known, he said, because they are fossorial. In other words, “they spend 99.9 percent of their lives underground” and “most people who come across them think they are worms.”

“They are absolutely harmless,” Mendyk said. No venom, no sharp teeth. Maybe, he said, they might exude a smelly musk, like a skunk, but that’s it.

“Just leave them be,” he advised. “If they’re in the street where they could get squished, just move them over into some leaf litter.”

They eat termites and ant larvae, a characteristic that every Crescent Cityite who lives in a wooden house will surely admire. “But it will take a hell of a lot more of them to put a dent in that problem,” Mendyk said.

The zoo curator, who comes from Long Island and moved to New Orleans five years ago, said the Brahminy Blindsnakes may have gained a foothold in Florida first, but nobody knows how long they’ve been in Louisiana. Decades, he suspects.

He doesn’t call them an invasive species, because they don’t seem to be harming anything. He prefers the term “introduced” species. Since they don’t need mates to reproduce, they are “excellent colonizers,” he said.

And not just in Gentilly, but all over New Orleans. Prima was especially interested in a Facebook post referring to Brahminy Blindsnakes, because he and his girlfriend had spotted one too, while digging in a planter on their Metairie patio.

It looked like a worm, he said, but it slithered like a snake. He shot a video of the encounter.

Conclusions anyone?

There seems to be a certain poetry in all this. Clevenger, our jazz herpetologist, pointed out that the almost unnoticeable, sightless, subterranean snake proves that “there’s a beauty in everything.”

Plus, the little snake that is silently wrapping around the world could be a sort of symbol for the 21st-century connectivity that underlies this whole story.

Also, in a port city like New Orleans, which has eternally drawn and welcomed outsiders, the Flowerpot Snake can symbolize all the newcomers who add to the richness of the mix. Culturally speaking, that mix brought forth some beautiful stuff, like, yep, jazz music.

The word Brahminy, by the way, seems to refer to the most prestigious members of India’s traditional caste system, though how the term was applied to such a humble creature is anyone’s guess. Blindsnake can also be spelled Blind Snake.

How the Flowerpot Snake, found near a journalist’s house in Gentilly, died is unknown. Maybe a crow or some other bird caught it and accidently dropped it? There does seem to be a slight pinch mark in the middle of her little body. Now she’s preserved in alcohol in one of those cute, round, honey mustard jars.

ALMANACCO DEL FESTIVAL DI MONTECARLO – 15° EDIZIONE 1990

Pugh (USA) - Urs Pilz, coordinatore della giuria PALMARES DEL FESTIVAL CLOWN D’ORO FLYING VAZQUEZ - TRAPEZIO VOLANTE NIKOLAI PAVLENKO - GABBIA DI TIGRI CLOWN D’ARGENTO ALEXIS BROTHERS - MANO A MANO ANDREW & JACQUELINE - SOSTENUTO AEREO AKICHINE - SALTATORI ALLE CORDE DUO GUERRERO - FILO ALTO FLYING ESPANA - TRAPEZIO VOLANTE Come si è visto nelle ultime tre annate, questi sono anni di grandi cambiamenti per il Festival di Monte Carlo che dopo la stabilità del primo decennio, va incontro a una nuova fase. La famiglia Togni si è da poco imbarcata per gli Usa dove per due anni sarà protagonista della Blue Unit del Ringling-Barnum, lasciando così l'organizzazione del Festival dopo 14 anni. Murillo è uscito di scena, per iniziare la nuova stagione dei festival italiani. La direzione tecnica e di pista passa al Circo Svizzero Knie, sotto la direzione di Franco (in gara anche come porteur in un numero di barra russa con David Dimitri e Marie Pierre Benac). François Bronett è entrato nella squadra della manifestazione monegasca. Il Festival compie 15 anni e sarà un anno di grandi exploit. Oro al Von Karajan delle tigri, il mitico Nikolai Pavlenko che con il suo stile e l’eleganza del suo personaggio dotato solo di una bacchetta da direttore d’orchestra, anziché della classica frusta, oscurerà il grande gruppo di 14 leoni in prima europea di Jimm Clubb presentati da Larry Allen Dean. Davvero due grandi gabbie a confronto. E al primo quadruplo salto mortale al trapezio volante, “girato” da Miguel Vazquez nello spettacolo della domenica seguito da fortissima emozione. Dall’ultima fila delle gradinate Gustavo Fuentes Gasca attraversa il circo urlando e sventolando la bandiera messicana per regalarla al Principe Ranieri. Scena da brividi per un festival fino ad allora piuttosto ingessato. Le standing ovation rituali non esistevano ancora e il pubblico era molto più sobrio e composto di oggi. Salvo appunto rari e clamorosi exploit come questi. In gara ci sono anche altri volanti messicani, gli Espanas (Argento). Argento anche per l’emozionante quadro aereo di Andrew e Jaqueline che vedremo in Italia grazie a Nando Orfei. L’Ente Nazionale Circhi non ha risolto il suo rapporto con il Festival e a farne le spese saranno Elvio Anselmi e Rony Bello, annunciati nel programma con il loro bel numero di acrobatica a terra e al tavolino, ma assenti dagli spettacoli. Unico italiano in gara Elio Jarz con i suoi scimpanzé. I giovani Gartner, aggrovigliati alle proboscidi dei loro elefanti, conquistano la simpatia del pubblico. Belli i numeri di animali: la cavalleria di Sacha Houcke e il cavallo comico di Toni Hochegger che verrà ripreso dalla figlia Rosi. Il Festival si apre con gli auguri rivolti da Sergio alla Principessa Stephanie al suo ingresso con tutta la famiglia reale, in occasione del suo compleanno. Al finale del galà delle presentazioni, per celebrare i 15 anni, una gigantesca torta (vera, con tanto di panna!) viene portata in pista. Un’edizione che lascerà il segno.
