stoncy and the significance of the bat™️

okay so nancy, episode 2, has baseball and basketball players on her binder. in her second scene of the episode she talks to both steve and jonathan (who both look at each other, when the other is making a point to try to ignore the other, even tho that’s a little bit impossible at the time; nancy is hanging around with steve, barb and the unmentionables, which is new, exciting and unlike her + nancy (unlike her peers) is making an actual point to comfort jonathan, publically) i’d also like to add that in season 2 steve is on the basketball team (or perhaps that was just the sport of the week on hawkins high’s PE timetable)

(also note that when we see steve first playing basketball, nancy tries to reconcile with him and recounts what she thinks happened at the night wherein they were all at tina’s party but steve retorts “no that was your other boyfriend; that was jonathan” which is all VERY delicious food for thought)

skip a few, to nancy, episode 5, equipping herself with a baseball bat that she’s going to use in case she comes across the demogorgon again

only a minute after equipping herself with this weapon, steve arrives and says “i hope that’s not meant for me” to which she replies “no, no! i was just thinkin about... joining softball” (a lie, to be sure)

a short while later on, in the same episode, nancy lends jonathan the bat after proving that she is exceeds him in the shooting of cans and bottles department of their monster hunting mission. the pair argue about their preconceived notions about each other and how he thinks nancy isn’t her genuine self when around steve. she says “i’m not trying t be someone else!” even though she clearly does NOT want to end up like her mother, which is shown through her actions and her speech previously

later on in episode 8 (aka the peak of stranger things) jonathan customises the bat with a variety of nails so as to fight off the demogorgon better

(sorry about the lq but the cap is taken at a pretty awkward time when he’s movin about lol)

later, when nancy and jonathan are waiting for the demogorgon to smell their blood, steve interrupts jonathan’s almost love confession with the urge to apologise to him for their fight in an earlier episode. the pair do their best to get him out of the byers residence before the demogorgon would attack but it’s too late, so jonathan grabs nancy, steve and the bat before retreating into will’s bedroom.

by the time that steve has his whole “this is fuckin crazy!!!” moment over and done with wherein nancy has successfully gotten him out of the house, he has a change of heart; he wants to protect them. so by the time the demogorgon is drooling into jonathan’s mouth, it’s full weight of gangly limbs on top of him (which would have at LEAST given him a couple of broken ribs but okay my boy is a superhero), nancy tries to shoot the demogorgon into submission but to no avail. the bat meanwhile has been dropped to the floor, so when steve returns to the other teens’ rescue he scrambles to find the only weapon available to him and – in truly iconic fashion – beats the living shit out of the demogorgon. jonathan then proceeds to to set it on fire, like a helpful bf.

note that in season 2, steve now continues to keep the bat with him (just in case). this is possibly because the trio all silently agreed to some kind of joint custody, the bat was nancy’s at first but the boys were the ones to wield it (as well as, ya know, fire)
