Luis’ ‘Secret’ Death Cutscene
I don’t actually know how many people here on Tumblr know about this, so I figured I’d make a post- But in Seperate Ways during the part of the game where you have to rescue Luis from his burning lab, if you stand juuuuuuuuust outside of where he is but don’t actually go IN to save him, you get this special cutscene!!!!!!!!
And I just find the whole thing S O INTERESTING. Like,,,, first of all, we technically have a second (or third if you count the OG (and I’m not sure if there are any other cutscenes like this so correct me if I’m wrong!!)) Death for Luis!!!!!!! And it’s a goddamn poignant one at that too!!!!!!!!!
Like,,, first off; obviously, we have the paralells to his Grandfather burning in his childhood home. The fact that if it weren’t for Ada, there would’ve been a VERY REAL chance that Luis dies the same way his Grandfather died is just,,,,,, S O HEARTBREAKING TO ME?????????? Like Luis has a pretty repetitive theme of him almost dying in significant locations (If it weren’t for Leon, he would’ve died in a body bag underneath his childhood home) and unlike his Grandfather, who at least got to WRITE him a LETTER, he would’ve died in the exact same tragic way too!!!!!!! MAN!!!!!!
And then there’s the whole scene in general; A core part of Luis’ character is that he wants to do ANYTHING to survive. Not in a, ‘save your own skin’ kind of way, but he wants to survive because he wants to CHANGE. He wants to make a POSITIVE IMPACT and atone for his actions; he wants to get out so he can show the world he isn’t a monster and he wants to find love and meaning in life. Hell, he was even about to FISTFIGHT THE DAMN MONKS in that prison cell- THATS how desperate he was to get out and live and thrive!!!!!!!
Yet here he is, literally throwing himself into a burning building and- in this case- DYING without a second thought. He has to literally tear himself away from Ada to run into the lab
Because goddamnit he CARES SO MUCH ABOUT LEON AND ASHLEY AND ADA!!!!!!!! He would LITERALLY DIE for them!!!!!!!!!! He is NOT in this to save his own skin, CLEARLY- he sees his chance to finally show SOMEBODY he can do good and to HELP S O M E O N E for ONCE in his life, and he sees that goodness and that love in Leon and the rest of them- and he would do ANYTHING to help them get out, even if it meant throwing away his chance to live and escape Valdelobos.
And he doesn’t even hesitate, either?????? Like I said he literally has to rip himself away from Ada to run into the BURNING DAMN BUILDING cuz he’s that desperate and that was his first thought!!!!!!!!!!
And if Ada hadn’t gotten there in time, he WOULD have died. He would have died exactly like his grandfather; and he would have died with the world thinking he was the villain. He would have died having his actions only ever do bad. Even if he didn’t mean them to. He would have died in the middle of nowhere with no legacy to his name-
And worst of all, he wouldn’t have figured out to get the suppressants for Leon Ashley and Ada. He would’ve died, and Leon and Ashley would have had no idea. They probably would’ve thought he just,,, run off. They’d have no clue how hard he fought to help them.

I know I’m FAR from the only person to talk about this and I won’t be the last but I’d LOVE to hear other peoples theories on where exactly Luis was in the little increments of the game we don’t see him in
Like the biggest and most obvious one is where he was when he calls Leon and tells him he ‘screwed up’ right after giving Ada the new cure, but obviously he never shows up in the ballroom, and he gives Leon a call saying he ‘screwed up’, but what was he,,,,, d o i n g to get in trouble??? Like did he get caught up in one of the castles cartoonishly hard puzzles or get in a bad fight?? Cuz he pops up in the mines totally fine right after
Another thing I’m curious about is WHERE he hid the Amber. I might be TOTALLY misremembering but we,, never find out where exactly he hid it????? He leaves Ada with the ingredients then tells her he’s going to go get it and to wish him luck, but we never see him in-person after that till the mines (or in Seperate Ways’ case, until he cures Ada), let alone retrieving the Amber where on earth did he hop off to??
If I had to throw my own theory in the ring, I think maaaaaaaaaaaybe he would’ve returned back to his childhood home????? Cuz he comes back ro Ada with the same little apothecary kit that was sitting on the table of his home, but that itself brings up a lot of questions of how the hell he got through the castle without being caught BXNSJMSXK
Again I might also very very much so just be misremembering the order of events so feel free to yell at me HANDHXNCJXN

Every now and then I’ll remember this question that just sits in the back of my mind but like. Do you guys think anyone went looking for Luis after he ran away from Valdelobos when he was a child????
Like obviously there were people there to see the house burning and see him standing in front of it and it was noticeable enough that he was gone for somebody to write it down but like. Did anyone go looking for him?????? Or were they all too scared they’d end up like his grandfather???
We know Mendez was pretty close with Luis and his grandfather growing up, so much so that FROM MEMORY I’m PRETTY SURE (correct me if I’m wrong it’s like one am BCBDHENSH) he asked Mendez himself to burn down the house, so like- did Mendez know about or even encourage Luis to run away????? Did he go looking for the boy he may as well have considered a second son???????? Or did he just,,,, let him go???
Has ANYONE he cared about ever gone out of their way to look for Luis?? When he ran away from umbrella did any of his friends or coworkers try to find him??? Like we know most likely the authorities/Umbrella themselves were looking for him after he found out about Nemesis and Saddler and co were VEHEMENTLY looking for him but. Before he met Leon, Ashley and Ada… had anyone ever cared to look for Luis?? Did anyone care enough to notice he was gone??? Cuz if not man. That’s fuckin brutal

Serennedy means. So fuckin much to me. It makes my SKIN CRAWL man.
Just. Just two very, very broken people. Who have found solace in each other when they really shouldn’t have. A man whose indirectly destroyed the others’ life. A man whose lost any and all sense of hope that life will get better. Yet by some omnipotent twist of fate they still wound up in each others arms. They still sound a moment of peace in what should’ve been a neverending cycle of darkness and destruction. They’ve been in each others lives longer than they realise. They’ve been connected by strings they didn’t even realise existed. They’d go through hell and back for each other. They’d play the role of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza because that’s the only language they knew how to describe what they felt for each other. The inherent love that Alonso and Sancho had for each other in that book carried on into each others personal lives. Yet it was never meant to last. That fantasy was never meant to last. One of them was always gonna be doomed from the start. Yet the other still held his hand and cried for him and carried his memory and confirmed to him that he was a fine knight goddamnit.

Knowing me I’m gonna absolutely make this into a longer post but like. Isn’t it just SOOOOOOOO SILLY AND SO GOOFY that Luis bestowed the role of Sancho Panza onto Leon even though they’d only JUST met
Like,,,, Don Quixote isn’t just a book Luis loves a lot- he bases his ENTIRE MORALITY on his own ideas of what Don Quixote means and what the messages behind it are. He SURROUNDS himself with chivalric ideals and so, obviously, he holds that book and it’s characters VERY near and dear to him- hell, he doesn’t even let Ada or Ashley in on just how much this damn book means to him!!!!!!! The other scientists who he worked with during his time with Los Illuminados also called him Don Quixote, but realistically, how much would they have known of Luis’ deep-seeded love for that novel??????
So like. Clearly. There is NO WAY IN HELL Luis doesn’t understand the impact of Alonso (Don Quixote himself) and Sancho’s relationship. He ABSOLUTELY understands the importance of it and how vital to the tale each other are and how intrinsically intertwined they are in each others lives and how one would quite literally have not survived without the other and how they’ve gone through hell and back for each other (in Alonso’s eyes LITERALLY) and how Sancho was there for him when his illusions of fantasy finally faded away
So. Like. Luis picking Leon to call his Sancho HAD to be purposeful right????????
He HAD to have understood the weight of his words and the weight of his decision. Maybe Leon didn’t quite understand at first but Luis????? Luis knew DAMN WELL that Don Quixote and Sancho Panza’s relationship went further than two people who just happen to be on the same adventure. Luis picking LEON to be his Sancho was PURPOSEFUL.
He’s not just any old chum he happens to he stuck with; Leon is a man who fully encompasses EVERYTHING GOOD Luis believes in in the world. Leon is EVERYTHING his chivalric ideals want him to be. He’s an inherently kind and caring and selfless human being and he’s everything Luis wants to see in himself. He saved him from certain death and now they’re connected more by just the circumstances of their situation- they’d go through hell and back for each other and they HAVE. He wants Leon not just to like him but to LOVE him. Because Leon sees past his actions; he sees past his mistakes and up until now, nobody has ever given him that privilege. Just like how Sancho still believed in Alonso and still believed that there was worth in his fantastical delusions.
So how does Luis express this gratitude without just straight up saying ‘I love you’????
By using language he understands and is comfortable using, of course.
By projecting a story that has meant SO MUCH to him onto the both of them.
And GOD. THATS SO POIGNANT TO ME. HES TELLING LEON HE LOVES HIM IN A WAY HES BEST AT AND MOST COMFORTABLE DOING. HES SAYING ‘I LOVE YOU’ IN ALL OF HIS ACTIONS AND PROJECTIONS. WHICH MEANS MORE THAN THOSE THREE WORDS EVER COULD. HES USING HIS OWN LOVE FOR THAT BOOK TO PROJECT HIS LOVE ONTO THE PEOPLE HE CARES ABT GODDAMNIT‼️‼️‼️
(ALSO SIDENOTE THIS DOESNT JUST APPLY TO LEON!!!!! THIS APPLIES TO ASHLEY AND ADA TOO!!!!!!!!!!! HE PROJECTS THIS SAME LAMGUAGE ONTO THEM AS WELL, JUST NOT TO THEIR FACES!!!!!!!!!! HE SHOWS THEM KINDNESS AND LOVE IN HIS ACTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!)
And I think on some level Leon knows this too. He probably hasn’t analysed Don Quixote from every angle possible like Luis has, but he knows- in those final actions, when he takes up the mantle of his Sancho and confirms to Luis that, yes, he WAS a fine knight, he WAS his Don Quixote- I think he knew exactly what Luis had been trying to say to him this whole time. Just…. Using words that best describes it in his own way.

Fun fact, hearing and touch are generally theorised/considered to be the final senses that shut off after you die, so there’s a good chance that Luis DID feel Leon hold his hand and tell him he was a fine knight as he was dying

Ok so I wanna make a post going into this exact like from Don Quixote and how I think it just. So perfectly encapsulates Luis’ death scene and Leon’s emotions towards it (How he (in comparison to other characters) a very small/gentle reaction) and I remember somebody on here pointed it out first, but for the love of god I CANNOT remember who it was and I wanna give them proper credit!!!!!!!!!
So if anyone knows I’d really appreciate it!!!!!

Man isn’t it so silly and goofy that fire has been a constant destructive pattern in Luis’ life yet he still continuously plays with in between his fingers every day.
Isn’t it so funny that fire has consistently destroyed almost everything he loves yet he still carry’s around a lighter and plays with it on the regular like it’s nothing.
Isn’t it just super goofy that Luis would continuously smoke and slowly destroy his lungs even though his key and defining character trait is hope and the urge to live and do good and change. Isn’t it wild that he has a habit like that that he just can’t shake even though he wants nothing more in life than to change.
Isn’t it wild that Luis keeps doing things that destroy him out of habit or unintentionally- umbrella, Los Illuminados etc- yet he still holds a sentimental place in his heart for his umbrella coworkers and his village etc etc etc. Isn’t that so silly.
Isn’t it just so silly that even when the world has turned his back on him and even when by all means he should be bitter and numb he still chooses to love. Isn’t it just super ridiculous that Luis continuously chooses hope and change and goodness and continuously makes the effort to help save Ada and Leon and Ashley even when it risks his own survival and safety.
Isn’t it crazy how he keeps doing things that destroy him not just out of habit but because he knows it’s the right thing to do.
Isn’t it so silly and goofy that Luis still continues to play with fire in a lighter even though fire has taken everything he loves from him. Yeah. Totally crazy

!!!Trigger warning for discussions of pretty gnarly surgical procedures!!!
A post made by the lovely @mr-kennedys-elf got me thinking about HOW exactly Luis removed the Plagas from himself and I NEED to share my brainworms or else I’ll EXPLODE
Like my biggest question is, did he use the same machine that Leon and Ashley used, just an earlier prototype?? Or did he physically c a r v e it out of himself with a scalpel or a knife???????
Cuz on one hand, we know for certain that the machine at one point was N O T safe in the SLIGHTEST and took the lives of MULTIPLE scientists, would might explain why Luis has such a gnarly scar, but on a similar other hand that scar looks WAY too raggedy and rushed for it NOT to have been done by hand
But if he DID carve it out by hand, how on earth would he have even managed that without passing out??????? Cuz the Plagas probably sits somewhere in the sternum or by the lungs since it causes people to cough up blood, so how damn deep did he have to dig?? Cuz I SO doubt that the scar would be that healed if this was the case (or, if it IS the case, how long ago did he remove the Plagas??? Did he have to do it early on?????)
BUT, IF HE REMOVED IT WITH THE MACHINE, can you imagine how damn scary that’d be?????? You’ve just spent god knows how long watching every other researcher that has tried to test it on themselves die horrifically, and now you’re the last one, and all you can do is just sit here and PRAY that you don’t end up with the same fate as them. There’s nothing you can do except take whatever the machine gives you. That’s TERRIFYING man
It is TERRIBLY late at night as I’m writing this so apologies if this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense BDNSJDNSJ !! These are all mostly rhetorical questions but I WANNA KNOW WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THING DANGIT
