Why Luz finally is developing feelings/ realizing she likes Amity more than a friend.
SEASON 2 EPISODE 2 SPOILERS!!
We’ve seen it since day one really, that Luz and Amity will always have a connection and have always had one. Whether it’s “hatred” in the form of a rivalry or love they will still be actively thinking about each other. Covention is the first episode we really a glimpse of Amity’s depth and why she acted the way she did in I Was a Teenage Abomination. When Luz realizes Amity isn’t all she’s made out to be, Luz helps her. For nothing in return. Amity is used to deals and promises; help for personal gain. But here’s a girl she was purposely mean to who’s genuinely trying to make a connection in exchange for nothing but trust. Even though Amity is still hesitant to listen to Luz, she does. And this is where I think the turning point is for her. Luz isn’t what she thought and is actually trying her best in magic despite her generally aloof attitude. Lost in Language is the next example of Luz and Amity building trust. Now that Luz has seen a different side of Amity, she wants more. She wants to try and better understand her, and in her attempt to do so, they are both endangered and forced to work together to get out alive. This leads to Luz helping Amity clean up and bond more. Luz even offers Amity her Good Witch Azura book so the two can talk about their interests more. The next episodes that show them grow are Adventures in The Elements. Luz ends up having to train in the same area as Amity and her siblings, and accidentally endangers the twins. To make it up to Amity, despite her protests, Luz does everything she can to ultimately save the twins. In Understanding Willow she also goes out of her way to help Amity fix Willow’s memory and instead of being angry with Amity she takes her time and tries to be nice to her. In Grom we also see her help Amity defeat Grom. My point to all of this is to show that Luz’s love language is acts of service. Time and time again she’s gone out of her way for Amity whether is picking up her books, carrying her to the nurse, or fighting her worst fears, it’s apparent she would do anything for Amity’s sake.
Now, Amity’s love language touch, not acts of service. I don’t want to dive too deep into it since I’m sure we can tell by now through her blushing and physical reactions to Luz’s touch. The turning point for Lumity as a whole was Wing it Like Witches. In this episode Luz and Amity practically swapped love languages; Amity getting Willow and Gus for help and playing with Luz at the risk of her grades, status, and parents wrath. Luz going out of her way to help Amity up and carry her to the nurses despite having “weak nerd arms”. The whole reason Lumity wasn’t working was the two separate love languages.
The first time we see the pair together after WILW is in Escaping Expulsion. In this episode Amity risks everything by openly disobeying her parents in front of a crowd of wealthy investors for Luz’s sake. And it works. For the first time we see Luz blush at something Amity’s done. They’ve both finally learned how to communicate with each other better and it’s working for once. The only reason (other than Eda’s curse) that Luz couldn’t tell Amity was into her, was the lack of communication. Amity obviously wasn’t going to confess and the idea wasn’t even on the table for Luz. But now that they better understand each other, Luz is finally realizing what’s in front of her. Now all that’s left to happen is for Amity to notice.
