Annabeth telling Percy “and you thought you were just a kid” after he beats Ares. VS Percy telling Annabeth to “just be a kid” at Disney world.

Annabeth saying he’s more than just a kid to try and show him that he’s better than the world has ever convinced him he is. She’s been raised to believe glory and achievements is how you “earn” love so, to her, telling him that yes!! He has purpose!!! He’s important!! Is the greatest reassurance she could give him. And also recognizing that he has such little self-worth he refuses to believe that he’d ever be important, and wanting to show him that he is.

Percy reminding her that she’s just a kid after the world has expected too much from her, has put too much on her shoulders from a very young age. After seeing how conditional the love she’s been given has been, how much she’s been forced to grow up and be strong in ways she shouldn’t have to. Telling Annabeth “six steps ahead” Chase to be a kid is what he knows she’s needed to hear for a long time, whether she’s recognized or realized it.

Their worldviews are so inherently opposed, yet they learn from and love each other so much.

The way percy just got up in the literal god of war’s face and tried to threaten him, in all his five foot-one preteen rage. Iconic behavior. But I think, on a more serious note, that that’s something the show is not just touching on, but exploring deeply. Percy’s anger.

There are a lot of moments in the book where you can see he’s angry. At the gods, at his shitty life, the situations he’s been put in repeatedly because the gods simply don’t care. But in the show, he’s so much more pissed all the time. He realizes the ways he’s been wronged, how unfair everything is for demigods. He points it out constantly to Grover and Annabeth, the unjustness they face, the way they’re forced to comply in a messed up system, at the whims of a messed up family. And he wants vengeance, he wants to fight Ares, the first god they come across. He’s a week in, and he’s done.

The comparison they’re drawing between him and Luke, and how alike they truly are in their ideals, is so fascinating. We see that Percy definitely could have ended up like Luke, maybe in an alternate universe.

Percy ranting to Annabeth about his confusion towards the fact that they’re supposed to earn their godly parents’ love. That fact that he knows from being raised by Sally that love isn’t supposed to be transactional, isn’t supposed to be a prize for doing great things. But Annabeth telling him that it’s at least predictable, that at least the Gods’ rules make sense. Unlike her father suddenly deciding she wasn’t worthy of love anymore, her stepmother pushing her aside. THAT. Is cinema. Thank you.

Edit: AND Annabeth experiencing that so young. Being six, seven years old, and wondering why all of a sudden she was hated for existing. Getting to camp halfblood and realizing that yeah, Athena is absent, but Athena is willing to show her some superficial type of love, if only Annabeth proves herself. So, she decides that she is just going to work and work and work as hard as possible to earn the recognition and love no adult in her life has ever given her, because it’s the only possibility for her. Percy growing up with the opposite, a mother who loved him unconditionally. Having lived only a week in this world and already questioning and fighting these cycles of neglect so many demigods like Annabeth have been stuck in for generations. Aghhh.

I have some issues with how the action scenes and tension were done in this episode, but if there’s one thing I can say is how WELL this script truly understands these characters, their fatal flaws, and the underlying themes of the entire series.

They understand that Percy is so trusting of Luke immediately that he doesn’t want to bring him on the quest. The quick glimmer of resentment in Luke’s eyes that would go unnoticeable to someone who’s never heard this story before when he mentions that the shoes are a gift from his father. Percy choosing someone who he knew would never betray him, and someone he thought he’d keep at arm’s length to go on the quest, instead. The differences between his goals and Annabeth’s goals, the small secrets they’ve already kept from each other, and how it’d inevitably drive distrust and suspicion between them immediately.

Annabeth’s anger and denial of the gods’ often self-serving and shitty ways because she wants approval from a parental figure so badly. Her arrogance and pride towards her heritage. Percy’s willingness to trust in people, and already brewing anger towards the gods making him more willing to hear Medusa out, because deep down, he knows there’s part of him that is already resentful. Medusa getting into both of their heads by telling them they’re doomed to repeat their parents’ mistakes, doomed to repeat the cycle.

But Percy still deciding he’d rather risk death than betray Annabeth and Grover to Medusa, even as she preys on his loyalty, and Annabeth being unwilling to give up Percy to Alecto when she had the chance, even as she has her own pride used against her. It causing both of them to realize that maybe they’re not who they initially who they thought each other were. The unspoken knowledge that this quest is so much bigger than their own desires and grudges, at the end of the day.

I’m just so excited about the way Rick is clearly able to go back and edit and incorporate themes that are introduced later on in the books, expand on character beats that he feels are important, etc. It’s been so cool to watch so far.
