as per beginning of 7th ep
Miorine telling that she never worried about other people and only thinks of escaping to Earth to the person that she gave up her chance for. lol. Also Elan duel pisses me off. Dude proclaimed another duel as condition for the first one, then claimed a hefty price for the latter and despite Suletta being able to decline it because it is not a part she needs to honor, she agreed, with a finisher of Elan fully knowing that he couldn’t pay out whatever she’d set up because he’d be annihilated upon loss. I won’t say it’s badly written or anything, but it’s annoying.

#G_Witch is trending on Twitter on a Wednesday afternoon, THREE AND A HALF WEEKS after it finished airing. Largely driven by Kana Ichinose saying Suletta & Miorine were married in an interview, to the point that #スレミオ結婚 (Sulemio Marriage) was trending on JP Twitter overnight.
Tumblr media
I think that just speaks to not only how popular The Witch From Mercury is, but how popular and important Suletta & Miorine are to so many people. I think Bandai made something really special with this show and it makes me so happy every time I see other people talk about how important the representation of Suletta & Miorine was to them.
Like, I still get emotional when I recall just how excited I was when Suletta was revealed as the main character and how much I watched that reveal trailer over the months. And how I wouldn't dare let myself get my hopes up that the first female Gundam MC could be gay. And just...fuck...they did it. They made Suletta gay and made her relationship with Miorine a core part of the story and they got married. I still can't believe I got this timeline.
I hope Bandai doesn't let this popularity go to waste.

The problem with writing "In this essay I will..." shitposts is that sometime you end up writing a chunk of the essay, or in this case, making a visual aid for the essay. Sometimes it eats all your free time in the week.
Not something that could ever happen to anyone ever.
Anyways.
Here's a chart drawing parallels between phases of the developmental history of Christianity, Marxism, and Zeonism.
Tumblr media
I've dressed it up as a Federation Survey Service report because their logo is cool. It's posted as part of my general repository examining the history and development of Zeonist ideology in the Universal century timeline of Gundam, but stands alone. The main repository is about specific ideological differences. This is about a multistage developmental model of revolutionary ideologies:
The Prophet
The Original Interpretation
Prophetic Failure
Doctrinal Reinterpretation
Widespread Adoption
Rejection and Reform -> The Prophet
I'm very happy with how the chart turned out; I learned some new tricks in Cytoscape.js. Look at those big swoopy black arrows!
But I also learned about some new Zeonist movements! Check out ReZeon and the Jupiter Phantoms!
Tumblr media
Here's the link to the whole chart, so you can zoom in:

If you were a pilot of any gundam, which one would you choose/which one do you think you would be assigned?
So this question has 3 answers
1: which *gundam* I’d like to pilot? Gundam Flauros (Ryusei-Go) from Iron Blooded Orphans
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It can turn into a crab!!!
2: which mobile suit? The zogok, my personal favorite of the abandoned California Base suits
Tumblr media
3: which suit would I be assigned?
The short answer? I can’t know for sure
The long answer… mwahaha
Tumblr media
So the answer can broken into 3 main components
1: what universe Im supposedly a pilot in (and when)
2: who i side with
3: how good of a pilot am I
I’ll answer 3 off the bat and answer everything else accordingly. I am a decent pilot at best. Not *the* best, but not terrible. I’d at least qualify as an Ace Pilot (5 kills)
So 1 is a fun one because gundam has… a lot of different universes
Tumblr media
This is currently the most accurate chart, just imagine the Witch from Mercury in the corner by the PD timeline
So let’s go down the line
UC
Earth Federation
So starting in the OYW (One Year War), the Federation got mobile suits much later than Zeon did, so my options are severely limited, especially considering I’m not part of the White Base. I have 2 options
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The GM and the Ball.
I pray to god I get the GM.
There’s also the Guncannon and Guntank Massed Production Types I could pilot if I’m lucky
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However after the OYW, the feddies created the Titans, and went through an experimental phase, creating suit after suit like the Hazel and Wondwart
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Titans would also make suits like the Hizack, Asshimar, and Gaplant, all of which are good contenders for being piloted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the Titans got cut out and their MS stopped being produced and were all sent to storage or scrapyards. However the Feds were far from finished. They took the GM and make countless upgrades, making the GM II and III, the Jegan, and the Jesta
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this is about where my knowledge of the EFF ends so I’ll move on
The Republic of Zeon
Now Zeon has a much more varied history, and I will be including Neo Zeon suits when it applies
So to start, Zeon had the humble Zaku, which then became the Zaku II. Later the suit was upgrades into the Gouf prototypes. Those are likely the suits I’d get if I joined in the early OYW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now mid OYW is a fun one because Zeon did a LOT with aquatic suits. If I’m lucky I could land a Gogg, Zock, Z’gok, Acguy, or even a Hy-Gogg, though probably not the Experimental Z’gok seen in 0080 War in the Pocket
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Towards the end of the war, Zeon introduced the Gelgoog and Rick Doms, which became their new mass produced MS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although after that, Zeon dissolved thanks to all of their leaders fucking dying (The Duke was killed by his son, who was killed by his sister, who was killed by Char Aznable. Dozle died gloriously in combat)
However, thanks to Haman, Zeon rose again as Neo Zeon, and their army of transformable Gazas. I’d rather pilot a Ball than a Gaza, so I think that demonstrates how bad the Gazas are.
Tumblr media
But that’s not all Neo Zeon did, as they also produced several other suits for their regular MS corps. Suits like the Zssa (pronounced z-sah, all one syllable), which I would gladly pilot. Look at her, who wouldn’t?
Tumblr media
And Neo Zeons most infamous mass production suit, the Döven Wolf. The half pint Psycho Gundam covered end to end in beam cannons, with detachable arms that can grab into enemy suits, or swing beam sabers. Oh also, it has a psycommu system, which meant Neo Zeon had some damn FAITH that all their soldiers are innate newtypes
Tumblr media
They also had the Zaku III, but that was kinda Generals only
Anti Earth Union Group
Rick Dias, it’s kinda their only mass production suit
I've reached my photo limit, so I'll just start directing to the Gundam wiki
And that’s all my UC knowledge
G Gundam
I’ve still gotta finish this one, I’ll get back to you on this
Wing
SEED
AGE
X
These are series I have yet to actually watch, so I’ll get back to you here too
Iron-Blooded Orphans
Gjallerhorn
Gjallerhorn isn’t very creative with its soldier suits, so I’d be stuck with a Graze, either the space or land variant
Tekkadan
Despite being a bunch of kids, Tekkadan has a surprising variety in their suits. I obviously wouldn’t be getting any of their Gundam frames, but I’d likely end up running a Landman Rodi, or a Shiden
Shidens are technically Teiwaz suits but Tekkadan uses the a lot
Turbines
They have Hyakurens. That’s it. Naze seems like a nice guy tho
Witch From Mercury
So this just depends on 1.5 things, whether I'm a student at the academy and which company I'm repping.
If I rep Jertuk Heavy Machinery, I'll be using a Dilanza
Peil Technologies would give me a Zowort
and lastly Grassley Defense Systems would give me a Heindree or Beguir-Pente
If im out of the school however, that would be a Dilanza Sol from JHM, a Zowort Heavy from Peil, or a Heindree Sturm from GDS. Im not providing the links, they're just variants of the aforementioned suits.
And finally, the Desultor (thanks JHM) if I side with the Earthian terrorist organization/freedom fighters: The Dawn of Fold.
If anyone knows more than me in anything I *have* talked about, feel free to correct or add anything!
I will be adding addendums once I've finally watched or read that particular piece of gundam media
Hope this answered your question! :3

How do I get into gundam
You MUST watch it from the VERY FIRST SERIES in 1979- Nah. Uh. Pick one of the standalone series that aligns with themes you're keen on and go from there. If you like it, cool! Branch out at your own pace. If you don't like it, also cool! Give it a go. It's not for everyone.
D'you like super bleak child soldier and political exploitation shit? Iron-Blooded Orphans. D'you like slow start world-building and lesbians? Witch From Mercury. Idiot teenagers trying to combat a global arms race via terrorism? Gundam 00.
If you genuinely like or have a vested interest in/tolerance for oldass animation and TV, you could just try watching the original few series in the main timeline. It's very fucking old, but the themes are very good. Plus the spinoff shows and movies for that timeline are cool and have more context like that.

Premium Official Objective Always Correct "Getting into Gundam" Watchlist (Main Timeline Bias)
I personally think it's best to start with the Universal Century/UC:
original series (0079 or just mobile suit gundam depending on where you pirate it from).
mobile suit gundam: the origin (the prequel, i think it works better if you've already seen the original show)
mobile suit gundam: the 08th MS team
mobile suit gundam: stardust memories
mobile suit zeta gundam
mobile suit zz gundam
Char's Counterattack (movie)
You can also start off by watching one of the Alternate Universe versions of Gundam, for a slightly newer show with less baggage. Iron Blooded Orphans and Witch From Mercury are great for this, and work pretty well watching them in-between sections of the UC list as a sort of break or palate cleanser. I know many people also got into Gundam through Gundam SEED, although I personally found SEED to be a slightly more muddled retelling of the original series and would personally reccommend at least trying the original series before checking out SEED.
By the time you get through these you should be well versed enough in the gundam universe to be able to pick and choose your own shows to watch from the enormous repetiore of mainline and AU shows.

hi hiiii i've been wanting to get into the mecha genre and the like, but im not exactly sure what to start with/where to start? I know theres not technically rules, but would you have any reccomendations for media to begin with? no worries if not, and thank you !! ^.^
I’m honored you’d go to me!
In terms of what to start with, it depends heavily on your personal tastes, so I’ll be including a range of series. Most of these are real robot, because super robot series can be very jarring for people who’ve never seen mecha before. I personally love super robot stuff, but it can be strange if you aren’t expecting a mech to pull out a giant top to hit pretentious bull-horned space princes with.
This is going under a cut for length!
If you’re looking for tragedy and horror, I have to suggest Space Runaway Ideon. While Tomino is most famous for his work on the Gundam franchise, Ideon is absolutely phenomenal. It often borders on Lovecraftian horror, and is famous for gruesome deaths and unrelenting tragedy. The gist of it is that a group of space colonists find a starship and a combining robot, and wind up in conflict with an alien civilization. As the war stretches on and the tragedies mount, it becomes clear that their wonder weapon, the Ideon, has a mind of its own.
Speaking of Gundam, the main timeline isn’t too unapproachable, and the standalone universes are all excellent starting points. I’m going to be giving a few of these, since Gundam series are ridiculously easy to access for English speakers— no having to dig through fan translations to find whatever has the least agonizing subtitle font here. Looking at you, Brave series.
The newest Gundam, the Witch from Mercury, is a wonderful starting point if you’ve not seen it already! It’s only twenty-five episodes, and while it pulls heavily from franchise history, it can be enjoyed without having seen a single prior Gundam.
It takes place in a future where humanity is split between Earth and space, with Earth being polluted and exploited by warmongering corporations, and space effectively being ruled by said megacorporations who are given the impunity to execute people. The first season primarily takes place in a school for the wealthy, which is effectively a training ground for future corporate executives, and a means to advertise their tech via mech duels. Everything in the school is dependent on one’s class, with even the dorms dependent on who sponsors your attendance.
The plot kicks off when our main character accidentally wins the hand of the daughter of the president of the largest conglomerate, as a political drama unfolds in the background.
It’s all on YouTube, and there’s a short story you should read between the prologue and the first episode, Cradle Planet. It’s on their official website, both in English and Japanese.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam holds up excellently, though the animation is rather clunky and dated. It’s a war story heavily pulling from WWII, following a child soldier who’s effectively forcibly conscripted when his home is attacked, and he hops in the main mech to defend civilians. It focuses on the horrors of war, and particularly soldiers’ PTSD. I’d personally suggest watching the three compilation movies and then circling back to the series proper if you liked what you saw— the compilation films cut out a lot of the fluff and make it a much more streamlined experience, but they also leave out a lot of lovely episodes and character moments.
Gundam the Origin, both the manga and the anime, are also wonderful beginners’ series. The manga is a retelling of the original series made by one of its creators, and expands upon it, giving neglected characters and storylines a lot more attention. The anime is an adaptation of a flashback arc, detailing the events leading up to the war in the original series, albeit with some timeline differences. It’s in my opinion the best place to start with Universal Century— while there are continuity differences, it’s a great primer for what Universal Centiry is at its core, a character-driven political drama and war story.
Obligatory recommendation for my favorite Gundam show, Gundam 0080. It’s a small-scale look at the tail end of a war from the perspective of a civilian child caught up in the mess when his home is used as a development center for the military. It’s a short little OVA, only six episodes, and doesn’t require much prior context for the rest of the franchise at all. It’s a very personal story focusing on a small cast of characters — a civilian child, a rookie soldier, and a test pilot — and their experiences with the war.
It’s best enjoyed with a burger.
If you’re looking for gritty military sci-fi, Armored Trooper VOTOMs is an excellent place to start. In this series, the mechs are walking coffins, with the outright referred to as “bottoms” because they’re considered the lowest of the low. It takes place during an uneasy truce between two warring nations, focusing on a man betrayed by his own side, hunted by both his former faction (and quite a few others) as he tries to discover the truth as to the mission that led to him being branded a traitor.
It is on the harder end of the sci-fi spectrum, so if you’re here for the ridiculous robots, it might not be to your liking.
If you’re curious about fantasy and shoujo-flavored mecha, Vision of Escaflowne is a phenomenal series. It’s an isekai, following a girl accidentally transported to another world by a brash prince on the eve of the destruction of his kingdom. From there on out it’s a mix of romance and political drama, with our heroes trying to thwart the machinations of an evil empire.
The mechs here are designed after knights, with utterly gorgeous designs and some really interesting setup mechanically-speaking— they’re magitek, and rather low-tech at that, with pilots seeing out of holes in the mech. Your enjoyment of the series will heavily depend on your fondness for shoujo romance and fantasy tropes, and especially love triangles. The movie adaptation has some fascinating piloting systems that skew close to body horror. While this one has manga, they’re generally not worth checking out.
If you’re looking for a mix of light-hearted fun and more serious action, the Patlabor show and OVA are essentially buddy-cop series taking place in a futuristic Tokyo, focusing on a department created to deal with mecha-related crimes. Both the OVA and series proper are a solid blend of fun, light-hearted character moments and tenser action. Our protagonist loves her mech like he’s a person, and it’s adorable. However, this one heavily depends on whether you like screwball police comedies.
The Patlabor movies, on the other hand, are densely political, examining the place of such technology in the world, and raises questions about the ethics of law enforcement and its use of violence to combat crime and terrorism, and the implications of using advanced military weaponry. They’re directed by Mamoru Oshii of Ghost in the Shell fame. These ones are pretty standalone, but if you’d like prior context, they take place in the same timeline as the OVA.
If you’re interested in mecha video games, I’m having a blast with Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner! It’s got wonderful gameplay, and some really interesting mech designs. They’re themed after ancient Egyptian mythology, and the shape language of most of the mechs is very curvy and round, something you don’t really see often, giving it a very unique aesthetic. I haven’t finished it yet, however, so this is based only off the first chunk of story.
After a terrorist attack drags him into a conflict he thought he’d abandoned long ago, our protagonist is shot and left for dead. In a desperate attempt to save him, his body is connected to his mech as a form of life support— if he leaves it, or the mech shuts down, he dies. Seeing as the mech is what his enemies want, this leaves him no choice but to stay involved. The gameplay is quite energetic, the boss battles are fun, and just about every move and animation are designed to make you feel as cool as possible. It is a Hideo Kojima game, so keep that in mind going in.
While it’s a classic and often recommended, don’t watch Evangelion as your first mecha. It pulls very heavily from Tomino’s body of work, and I’d only suggest watching it after you’ve seen a show or two of his— especially Gundam or Ideon. Hell, watch an Ultraman or two first— that’s where the Christian imagery comes from. You’ll miss out on a lot if you go into it without prior context.
There’s a lot of mecha out there, but these are what I consider to be the most beginner-friendly. When it comes to banner franchises like Getter, Mazinger, or Brave— you can honestly pick any one of the shows to start with, as there’s no overarching continuity. Do some reading and pick whatever interests you! If you’ve got an hour or two to burn, there’s a retrospective on Getter Robo and its influence on the genre that’s worth watching even if you don’t plan to check out any Getter yourself.
I hope you find something you enjoy!

Ok, I saw a twitter user post about how Witch From Mercury focuses on the implications of the hero gundam unlike past gundam shows and I am obligated to defend my babygirl Iron-Blooded Orphans because this is slanderous.
I also want to preface that I have yet to watch much of any UC series (I’m planning to grind through the Chamuro divorce saga after I graduate with a friend), but I have watched IBO, 00, 08th MS team, and Unicorn among some other movies and series. I have an unpopularly negative opinion of 00 so I don’t feel equipped to analyze any of the implications/themes of the show, but I loved Trailblazer so I’ll probably come back around to it eventually.
ANYWAYS, I fucking love IBO. Not as much as WFM, but it’s absolutely my second favorite series from what I’ve watched so far. Yeah, it’s one of the darker series and it doesn’t have any of the trademark Gundam characteristics about space empathy and the evolution of humanity, but it makes for a wildly interesting mafia/pirate/found family story that targets a BUNCH of my weaknesses. However, it fucking NAILS the overarching theming of the universe and how the Gundams are portrayed and perceived in a very unique way.
The Post Disaster timeline is clearly one of the most unique timelines as it’s literally a post apocalyptic setting after Mobile Armors tried to blow the Solar System up. UC kind of plays with something similar with Operation British/the Colony Drop, but it’s clear that even though half of humanity on Earth died, it’s still a relatively put-together setting. In PD, Mars is completely saturated with war orphans and impoverished people with almost no one wanting to fix the world outside of a naïve teenage hedge fund girl who was literally nicknamed the Princess of Revolution for wanting to play out a fairytale with her as the hero. Even though she succeeds in her objective of gaining Martian economic dependence, at the GREAT cost of Tekkadan mind you, season 2 reveals that despite this, nothing has changed. She succeeded in claiming Martian half-metal for Mars, but it simply enriches a different external entity (Teiwaz in this case) while the poor and homeless continue to suffer. It’s an acute summation of this world where naivety and “hope” will often lead to either net neutral or negative outcomes (insert images of Shino, Mika, Orga, Akihiro, the Dort protesters, and all of the people who died because Kudelia wanted to change the world and Orga wanted to take the shortest path to an easy life for everyone). Regardless of how pure your intentions are, the PD universe will always clap back and fuck either you or the people you’re trying to help over (even Naze and the Turbines suffered this fate).
MOVING on, I bring this up simply to demonstrate how fucked up the setting is and to illustrate why PD Gundams, literally forgotten demons that saved the world from the apocalypse, fit very well in this setting. Barbatos is a perfect encapsulation of this setting. When piloted by the World’s most autistic, driven teenager, it’s capable of unimaginable power, even by the standards of Gundam timelines with drastically higher power scales. This leads to some of the coolest fights ever animated by Sunrise (cradling Barbatos vs Hashmal in my arms like my child) and people turning off their analytical brain to go “ooh big robot” which is a valid way to consume the show. However, the ramifications and effects Barbatos has on the universe is earth-shatteringly important. The extraordinary power Barbatos demonstrates when he and Mika defeat Hashmal awakens something in McGillis that Bael finds worthy, thus leading to Bael;s reemergence which would uproot the entire power structure of Gjallarhorn, the main military power of the system. it also instills a fear in Julietta and Gjallarhorn that these demons are still around and capable of taking squads of Mobile Suits on their own and pushes Iok into bringing the Dansleif (A LITERAL WARCRIME WEAPON) into the field and Causing The Latter Half Of Season 2 to go wrong (oversimplification but I just think it’s funny).
What I’m trying to explain is that the protagonist Gundam of IBO is a potent manifestation of what’s wrong with the PD timeline. To survive, Mika has to sacrifice body parts to let Barbatos off its leash and destroy insurmountable opponents that would be undefeatable without every Dainsleif Gjallarhorn has. It sucks that most people will watch IBO and see really cool mech fights and the Kudelia-Atra-Mika polycule and simply chalk the series up as a mecha shonen because I feel that label does a MASSIVE disservice to the show (I won’t get into it now, but as a poly bisexual, the Mika polycule could have been amazing if any of the writers had met a woman once before this show). Aerial is completely bait for me (they finally made the Gundam A Character) and I love her for how unique and utterly intriguing she is for a Gundam, but Barbatos and even Unicorn and most of the Gundams in 00 are a joy to pick apart and analyze in the context of their respective universes. Just because Aerial has eleven space oomfies in there doesn’t automatically make her any more of an amalgamation and representation of Ad Stella than Barbatos does of Post Disaster or Unicorn of the Late-UC period.
Anyways, watch WFM and IBO.

G Witch Episode 23
Between Suletta vs. Eri, Guel vs. Lauda, and even Miorine vs. Prospera ("all of us will be family after all"), it seems the theme for today's episode is "family conflict."
Another OP change, and yes, Calibarn is here now, plus Barding, Schwarzette, and Suletta interfacing with Calibarn as well!
The circumstances regarding its usage were hardly what I thought they'd be at first, but regardless Schwarzette has a great aesthetic going on! I love the one-winged look, the purple highlights, and its attack where it blasts multiple lasers off a single point on its "sword".
"But if they get in our way, Mom won't hesitate"... but what about you Eri? I feel like this confirms some viewers suspicions that Eri was just as conditioned by Prospera as Suletta, as it seems as if Eri's doing this for her mom's sake more than for her own. Actually, it reminds me of Suletta's killing of that guy in Plant Quetta, except this time it's Eri doing the killing, so it's taken to an even greater extreme.
I'm not sure if it's actually the case, but I think what caused the initial interference to QZ was the original Eri herself, since the one we see turns to look at Aerial's head, and thus the ones Suletta are communicating with are the other 11 repli-children.
Turns out the Space Assembly League is not as outgunned as we first thought...
Anti-Personnel Haros... are all Haro models compatible with weaponry?
Guel loses real bad to Lauda; only a gundam can beat a gundam, after all. But this shit won't end like Romeo and Juliet, not on Felsi's watch! See, this is what happens when you let her help!
"If that's a joke, it's not funny!" The Tempest is a comedy, after all.
Miorine telling Prospera about Suletta using the Calibarn marks the first time, I think, that Prospera simply stopped bothering to try and talk down an opposing argument and resorted to violence. I like to interpret this as Miorine making it clear she fully understands what Prospera's about now, and is not gonna let her smooth talk her way out of this.
The wedding is back on, as if you didn't know.
I think, ultimately, Prospera's fatal flaw is that she was never able to move forward in a story that's all about people moving forward. Moving forward into scary situations, moving forward from the person you were yesterday, and moving forward despite wanting to do anything but. Now, obviously, Prospera does a LOT of moving, but it was never truly forward. Rather, she wanted to go backwards, back to the way things were, even if she had to move heaven and earth to do it. Prospera Mercury is a woman trapped by her past just as much as she entraps everyone around her within said past.
Everyone survived! But then... well, the main body is still intact, so maybe Eri can still be recovered, right!? Either way... suffering builds character, Prospera.
"Final Episode," huh? I gotta say, Sunrise has been real tight-lipped about this series' length. If this is the finale of "witch from mercury," is it also the finale for the Ad Stella timeline? I certainly wouldn't mind more adventures with Suletta and the gang, but if not, then I'll be content with imagining them living the rest of their lives in peace (hopefully), they deserve that.

hi hi o/ i've actually been thinking about getting into gundham bc of lurking on your blog for a while lol, is there any specific order i should watch the different series in for lore/Optimum Vibes or does it not really matter?
HELL YEAH i am glad to help 🫡🫡🫡
as for gundam watch order, the answer is KIND of complicated. theres the universal century timeline of gundam stuff, which is like, the "main" gundam timeline so to speak. if you genuinely truly cant find a starting point, id say you start there, and there is a watch order you could do there, but even going by release order is fine.
for UC, itd be:
original mobile suit gundam anime or movie trilogy > mobile suit zeta gundam anime (trilogy has a non-canon ending) > mobile suit ZZ gundam > mobile suit gundam char's counterattack > mobile suit gundam unicorn > mobile suit victory gundam > gundam f91. this isnt counting the side story stuff like war in the pocket
a little long but you get the general idea.
BUT. there are also the AUs, and that's where stuff gets a bit looser. there are like. several gundam AUs.
and honestly, id reccomend just looking at the various gundam AUs (mobile suit gundam seed, mobile figher G gundam, witch from mercury, etc.) and just kinda looking at them and if you find one you think is cool? fuck yeah. start with that. thats what i did. i just started with G gundam because Me Shonen Brained and now here we are. the AUs arent connected so tbh you could hop in anywhere and enjoy yourself. even if its as simple as "that mecha looks cool" or "i like that character design" you can hop in there and be perfectly fine. (in a similar case of not having a good idea, id maybe reccomend mobile suit 00 gundam. its cool)
of course, this is to say in general, hop in wherever you want. if you end up where you wanna start on CCA and work your way through everything else then fuck yeah do that. whatever works baby. but yeah, you can essentially follow that kind of philosophy and be alright

experimenting with different ways of organizing this post. shout out to bullet point lists. anyway once again I watched more television than doing anything else
listening (podcast):
new Palisade: very fun as usual! I love the Blue Channel crew so much and I am constantly so worried for them
Great Gundam Project: still very fun to hear how little they know about what is to come. also they got to the episode where Char comes back with a bunch of cool underwater robots and 1) god I miss Char I wish I too were watching an arc of Gundam that has Char in it and 2) shout out to the Gogg & Z'Gok, two of my fave suits in all of Gundam
Media Club Plus: once again they have good thoughts about Hunter x Hunter, truly cannot wait to hear Jack's reaction to the Illumi reveal
listening (music): Dance Apocalyptic by Janelle Monae because I'm stealing songs from my old Beam Saber campaign playlist to make a Partizan/Palisade playlist and that's on both
reading:
Imperial Uncle: got to a twist about halfway through that I was fully not expecting but it was very fun, and the story in now drastically different than I thought it would be when I started but I am still enjoying it a lot
The Death I Gave Him: one of the most interesting questions to me in any Hamlet adaptation/retelling is what to do with Gertrude, what her role in the murder was, etc, and I'm enjoying the way this novel handles that. shout out to unethical science milfs
watching:
TGCF: regarding last week's episode, since we watched it after last week's wednedsaypost: on one hand, beef of beefleaf fame! my beloved! they looked extremely good! ("op they were chained up & disheveled" yeah exactly) on the other, the racism and also the transmisogyny. not that any of this was surprising because it's in the novel too, but it sure sucks to have racist caricatures and also to repeatedly treat the gender shifting & crossdressing as a joke and/or with disgust. regarding this week's episode: rip to Hua Cheng :/ sorry your crush burned your house down :/ I don't remember this arc super well because it was kinda overshadowed (for me) by having Ghost City and then the start of book 2 on either side of it, and as primarily a beefleaf & Mu Qing main I have priorities
Bakeoff: so the technical was a shitshow in a way that is 100% on the judges for not giving them enough time like. sorry that's what it means when every single person underbakes it. however. I literally laughed so hard I was in physical pain when everyone was presenting their horrible liquid puddings so who could say if it was bad or not
Hunter x Hunter: I do love where Killua's arc goes but I also really enjoy this early bit where he's just incredibly competent & terrifying and kicks everyone's ass without breaking a sweat. good for him, sorry about what led you to this point tho
Legend of the Galactic Heroes: other things happened in the episodes that I watched but I will be honest, most of it is wiped away by the preview for next episode showing me an incredibly major character death. um. aside from that. I do like the battle sequences, I love when a show is a couple of guys in a room going "I think this is the enemy's plan, here's what we're going to do about it" and then you see some different guys in a different room going "this is our plan, I hope this is how they react to it" and so on. also I like the narrator as kind of like. a historical accounting of the events, both because I like stories about the narrative construction of history and also because it means everything happens on very specific dates and I love having clear ideas of timelines
ZZ Gundam: finished ZZ! in general I enjoyed it (though I still prefer Zeta) and there are some really fun moments, especially with the Gundam Team, and I like Haman a lot as an antagonist. I didn't realize how close we were to the end until we had like 4 episodes left because the pacing is. kind of interesting. lot more "going to a place and fucking around for a while" than I expected, and sometimes it works better than other times. most of my ~critiques are things I already said last week (the misogyny, the ways in which the critiques of western military intervention in Africa & southwest Asia fall flat due to the white saviorism & none of it really getting a chance to be developed properly, etc) so I'm not gonna go into all that again, but I am going to just mention one of the wildest things which is that they refer to Dublin as "a city in what used to be Britain" which is. a loaded thing to say in 2023 let alone in the 1980s. lmao
I'm in Love with the Villainess: a fun yuri isekai about someone with a shitty job who gets transported into the world of her favorite otome game except instead of giving a shit about any of the male love interests she just wants to spend all her time with the female antagonist. it's very light and silly, and we're watching it as a short break before diving into more Gundam. I do love it when there are lesbians and little hints of class conflict simmering just under the surface
playing:
Ace Attorney 5: some mixed feelings about what I've gotten through this week. I love to see Edgeworth and I'm so compelled by Aura & Simon (individually and also as siblings), but I don't like how Trucy continues to be incredibly sidelined, and whenever they talk about the "dark age of the law" I kind of feel like. ok. look. it is just factually incorrect that it's only now that people cheat in court and only care about winning, and also the idea that overturning one (1) false conviction will fix the problems of the legal system is laughable. especially considering 1) everything about Von Karma 2) Edgeworth's entire backstory and 3) the fact that Phoenix spent the 7 year gap inventing a new legal system that everyone forgot about I guess. anyway. I do love Aura a lot though
Blades in the Dark: finally was able to run another session in my Blades campaign, in which the party. checks notes. performed a reverse bank heist. and also a normal bank heist. sometimes you have to break into a bank to leave something in a specific vault and you steal some other stuff along the way
making: finished building Miorine, so she is no longer a disembodied head and can now stand on the shelf with her wife. I'm not a huge fan of some the proportions/posing of the model, she has. like. woman in a comic book proportions that she doesn't have in the actual show (Imo the worst of it is her arched spine which you can't see here but I was surprised because Suletta has just. a normal spine)
Tumblr media
drinking: Down East's cider donut-flavored cider because, once again, I love a seasonal fun little drink. this one's not as dry as the equivalent Citizens Cider I posted about a couple of weeks ago but Down East's stuff does tend to be a little sweeter in general. extremely good though, to be clear
Tumblr media
writing: I added a section to my wip doc for my Nirvana in Fire exchange fic and copied over my giftee's prompts but I have not started on it and other than that I've done no writing. oops.

hi cori!!!! i’ve been meaning for a while to get into gundam but there seems to be so much of it and i don’t know where to start, what would you recommend as a good place to jump in!!! char i would like to meet him..
HI!!!!! sorry it took me a bit to get to this.
So I would absolutely recommend starting with the original Mobile Suit Gundam show from 1979, also called Gundam 0079 or First Gundam!
it’s the one that started it all, and it’s really a great gateway into Gundam as a whole. if you don’t have the energy or feel like watching a whole show there is also a compilation movie cut of 0079 that is 3 movies, which i believe is on Netflix, though i would still recommend watching the show if you can. (it’s even on the internet archive!)
the show is a little bit dated in its animation but it is honestly really charming and grows on you. the themes are still interesting even today. and also char is there! this is where he first appears and where his story starts.
After 0079, the typical watch order (which is basically just production order) is Zeta -> ZZ -> CCA. Those are the two shows and a movie that followed after 0079 and follow a connected storyline and characters. There are some shows that take place later on after that too, but 0079/Zeta/ZZ/CCA are the main sort of “cycle”.
All those shows take place in the “Universal Century”, which is the original and largest sort of shared universe/timeline within Gundam. There are a number of other spinoff universes, typically just called AU’s, that are not connected to the UC, and follow their own stories. Witch from Mercury, the newest one, is set in an AU. I love the AU’s (one of the more outlandish ones, G Gundam, which combines Gundam with a martial arts tournament type story, is my favorite, lol) but I’d still recommend watching 0079 before you dive into them, unless one of the AU’s is really interesting to you. Watching 0079 really helps you get an idea of the sort of shared tropes that a lot of the Gundam stories work with (see: why they keep Inventing New Masked Guys) so it helps to have it as a basis.
From your posts I also think you would really like Turn A Gundam, another AU show, but you really should watch at the very least 0079 before you try to watch Turn A, because it works best as a show when you’ve seen other Gundam shows before it, because it very intentionally builds on them in ways that i cannot explain without it being a big spoiler. But you have that to look forward to for sure!
All in all, welcome to Gundam! It’s a really cool series with a lot of interesting history. Gundam fans love seeing other people get into the show so i’m excited that you’re interested! Feel free to ask questions if you have em and I’d be glad to do my best to answer. Have fun in space!!!

So now that G-Witch is over (and I finally ordered a HG Aerial), is it a step up from Gundam IBO? I feel like G-Witch is the better show, but IBO is the more important one. I’ve been saying this since the first season, so much of G-Witch felt like it was done in response to IBO. IBO, on the other hand, felt like it was taking the hypocrisies of the Gundam franchise to their absolute limit.
The franchise wants to say “war is hell,” but also wants to market model kits of cool robots. We occasionally get bits on how war can mess kids up, but at the same time the franchise uses the war as a means to mature it’s protagonists. It usually wants to use a grey vs grey war setting, but at the same time the narrative wants us to support one side over the other. The enemy must be stopped, but it’s meant to be grey because the other side are just guys fighting for what they believe in and some of their commanders aren’t complete shitheads (though the upper echelons are another story). So while the “bad guys” are defeated, the good guys will talk about the need for “understanding” despite them having unstoppable killing machines. Violence is okay when the good guys do it, especially if they don’t kill the enemy pilots. It’s okay for the good guys to use illegal weapons, even if we condemn the enemy for using the same weapons. Worldbuilding fluff is often left out of the show, told in side-materials, despite how it could help us better understand the conflict (though that gets in the way of the narrative). And the whole not repeating the past thing is a joke considering we either base events on real wars or reuse the Universal Century timeline.
I mean, you can look at something like SEED and see how these things can be problematic. Old interviews with Fukuda have him saying things like he wanted to make it like super robot shows of the 70’s, the mold Gundam tried to break out of, or how things were done simply because they were cool. That got to a point where SEED was being deconstructed in crossover games and 00 was made with the intent, according to it’s director, to examine what happens when you fight to end fighting, something that was a major part of SEED’s morality later on (though Fukuda himself has dismissed this, saying that Kira fights during Destiny for a world where there will be conflict because that’s needed for people to grow and the Destiny plan would have eliminated conflict). Yet people believe SEED is emblematic of Gundam, and that 00 deconstructed the entire franchise in it’s first half.
IBO intentionally cranked the hypocrisy up to 11, made it’s main characters the villains in the eyes of history and punished them for their crimes while saying more people needed to question them (the creators backed this up0. It’s lost on a lot of people, but damn, that takes some balls. You really can’t go back to Gundam as normal afterwards, you need to be conscious of what messages you are sending out.
IBO sounded the alarm on what Gundam had become, G-Witch fought for the franchise’s soul. That's the way I see it.
Still would rather rewatch Witch though, because it doesn't drag like IBO did and the animation is way better.

zeta gundam is unmatched and you can get away without much knowledge of the original series. 0800 war in the pocket rules as well and is wayyyy shorter than zeta and gundam'79 so its a good starter one i think. witch from mercury is new and good and separate from yhe main gundam universalcentury timeline and is the one all of tumblr is watchign with the yuri
