whats does your go to makeup look, look like? what do you use to achieve it?

my go to makeup look is natural to soft glam, my eyeliner isn’t listed but on an edgier day i will wear a black liner with a smoked water line. dolores haze is an inspiration for my daily makeup especially with those blushed cheeks and red lips. also lana del rey and vintage stars

face: for a more dewy look i love the AOA (shopmissa.com) AQUA primer and makeup revolutions hydrate and conceal foundation + concealer or i use the $1 shopmissa pot concealers. if i want a more natural glow from within look, i will use my dior multipurpose palette but for a more mature sophisticated and lifted look i use my colorpop palette because it is more pigmented. The $1 AOA cream blush is if it’s a low effort day. for powder I use either Maybelline Fit Me or Colorpops No Filter Setting Powder.

lips: i LOVE lipgloss, the NYX lip oil is a berry color with a more oily consistency, unlike many glosses just listed as a lip oil. Fenty HEAT gloss in cherry makes your lips look so poppin, and the dior lip oil is honestly really moisturizing. And let me tell you about that AOA $1 skin salve. It comes in many scents and is really moisturizing + put it anywhere. MAC mini lippies too, i got these in a set from TJMAXX

eyes: i usually keep it pretty light with my eyeshadow with pinks, purplish colors, and cool toned or neutral browns. Listed is the Colorpop Rock Candy cool toned palette, the open palette is from hipdot i got it from ipsy, and once again, another $1 AOA product. These little shadow quads are actually decently pigmented, have cute packaging, and so easy to throw in your bag. on a more dramatic day i tend to do my eyeshadow like lana inspired

eyeliners+brows: i use the NYX jumbo on my inner corner for a brightening effect before i apply highlight there. the creme liner in white and the eyeliner pen are also from color pop. i have one in black but it isn’t listed. i love to use sky high mascara avoiding the bottom lashes for a more natural look. For my brows i tend to go more natural with a colorpop pencil and gel.

runner ups: colorpops BFF mascara in the blue shade, they so many colors but when i want to switch it up i apply it to my bottom lashes. the lancome juicy tubes last so long on your lips because it’s thick yet comfortable. LA colors Glossy Lips gloss + blush up cream blush are sooo nice and you can get them from the dollar store. the AOA $1.88 Super glue holds my lashes so good and it’s cheaper than most glues + better i’ve been swearing by it and the brand for YEARS

My Current Lineup

My favorite tried and true items, as of March 2024.

Foundation: Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Longwear Foundation in shade 210. What I like: silky smooth texture, applies beautifully with a kabuki brush, highly pigmented for coverage and minimal product use, luxurious finish.

Sadly my previous favorite foundation, the moonshot Micro CorrectFit Foundation, is likely being discontinued as I can no longer find it anywhere. I also have their Micro Settingfit Cushion EX. This is essentially that same liquid foundation product but pre-soaked in a cushion sponge inside a case, applied with an included silicone puff.

Why I love moonshot foundations: they provide superfine, buildable coverage, doesn’t cling onto texture on my skin. However I don’t like the cushion form factor as much - I find the puff hard to use as an applicator and would have preferred my own brushes. Also they have a very limited shade range and the shade that matches me is often out of stock.

Powder: CoverGirl Clean Pressed Powder - my very first powder product, tried and true as nothing else really compares. What I like: really fine powder, provides a nice, gentle and natural-looking matte coverage. Its quality feels like a whole class higher than its reality as a drug store brand. The powder also keeps pretty well and doesn’t cake up from being applied with liquid foundations.

Blush: e.l.f. Studio Blush in Candid Coral - one of the first blushes I ever tried and still my favorite after all the years. This particular color is subtle yet elegant, perfect for giving a more mature glow for my everyday work look.

Bronzer: NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna. Why I like it: luxurious-feeling bronzer with plenty of product for the price, buildable coverage, perfect for summer months to tone down the shade of my foundation. It also doubles as my nose contouring powder.

Eyeshadow: e.l.f. Shadow Lock Eyelid Primer Sheer - before I apply eyeshadow, I always apply this eyelid primer. It eliminates the eyelid crease and also makes the eyeshadow last a lot longer through any given night.

Currently I am using the IM’UNNY Multi Eye Shadow Palette in Simply Glam. I fell in love with IM’UNNY products after trying their mascara, and this eyeshadow palette is no exception. The colors are just so pretty and versatile. I can go from either a simple look to all glammed out for date night with just one palette.

Also of note: I have the limited edition MAC Maleficent Eyeshadow Quad and it shows just how high quality MAC products are. Their eyeshadow powders are fine yet very pigmented, making application easy and quick.

Eyeliner: IM’UNNY Skinny Fit Slim Pencil in Honey Brown - a gel pencil eyeliner that I picked up after starting to use their mascara. Why I love it: very simple, subtle pencil eyeliner that allows quick application in the mornings. The gentle shimmer adds just enough shine to double as both eyeliner and pseudo-eyeshadow in one application. A must have for quick getting ready routines.

For more serious looks: MAC Liquidlast 24-Hour Waterproof Liner. What I like: I searched long and hard to find an eyeliner that was truly waterproof. This is the ONLY product that is absolutely, truly, waterproof. I have gone swimming with it on and it does not budge. It basically doesn’t come off until you want it to come off, but is easy to remove with an oil-based makeup remover, and comes in a number of colors besides the standard black.

Mascara: IM’UNNY Real Fit Skinny Mascara. Why I love it: micro-thin brush! Way more suitable for straight, thin eyelashes than the thick wands from western brands. Buildable, coats each lash gradually instead of dumping mascara on in clumps.

For waterproof: Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Waterproof Mascara - one of the first mascara products I’ve tried and still good after all the years. What I like: truly waterproof and won’t come off until you’re ready to remove it. Actually it requires a good thorough rub with an oil-based makeup remover to come off completely.

Makeup Setting Mist: e.l.f. Matte Magic Mist & Set. What I like: This mist indeed has the best setting power among those I’ve tried, and it also is the cheapest thanks to e.l.f.’s affordable product lineup. Simple and straightforward.

Makeup Remover: The Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Balm. Why I love it: oil-based makeup remover with a luscious, buttery feel; super gentle yet strong removing power for any makeup on my face. This is the only makeup remover product I’ll ever need. The balm-in-a-tin form factor travels extremely well.

Also a favorite: Biore Makeup Removing Wipe - an emergency buy while traveling in Japan after forgetting to pack my Chamomile balm! I was amazed at how gentle the wipe felt and how well it removed even the most stubborn of my waterproof makeup, the mascara. Great option for packing light on travel.

Eyebrow Gel: Laka Wild Brow Shaper in Balance. Why I love it: subtle, buildable eyebrow gel, manages to tame my wild “manes” of eyebrows without going over the top in adding color or darkness. Now my eyebrows actually look presentable with minimal effort and no plucking!

Perfume: Giorgio Armani Sì Passione - I fell in love with this perfume after sniffing a tester out of a magazine page. What I like: it is a lovely and dynamic scent, sweet and yet complex with the sandalwood finishing note, maturely romantic and perfect for date nights. My husband enjoys it as well when I put it on. It’s pricey but well worth every penny!

 As with most things in life it’s all about being prepared and makeup is no different. The Number one thing you need to do before you start your makeup application is … Skincare/skin prep.

You may have seen that meme that says the best foundation that you can wear is good skin, well it’s actually true. One of the most important parts of makeup application is the skin prep you do before you even start putting on the makeup.

First thing is to start with a clean face. I like to start with a freshly cleansed face meaning that even if I’ve been out and about with no makeup on and then decide to do makeup later, I do a fresh cleanse with a good skin cleanser first. You’ve  been out around cars, pollution etc. so you want to make sure you remove all the impurities and start with a  freshly cleansed skin.

Next for me is toner, not everyone likes to use toner (you don’t have to) but I like to use it to help restore the PH of my skin so that’s always my second step. I use a mattifying one because I have combination/oily skin but obviously you use one that’s right for your skin type. If you use special treatments serums etc., this is the time to layer them on, making sure to give them a bit of time to be absorbed into your skin, a minute or so will do.

Then its time for a good moisturizer. As far as  your skin is concerned moisturizer keeps moisture in, but for makeup moisturizer is also important because it  helps your makeup go on smoothly. You can test this by putting some moisturizer on the back of your hand and then apply foundation to the part with and without moisturizer, the difference is night and day.  if you have mature skin like me, you really need that  moisture to help the skin look soft and supple and   and also to reduce the chance that product is going to settle into the fine lines on your face and accentuate any lines and wrinkles. We definitely don’t want that!

NO matter what skincare you use the final step should ALWAYS be Sunscreen. Sunscreen is the number one antiaging skincare.  Sunscreen reduces your chances of skin cancer, helps with hyperpigmentation and helps reduce the rays’ effects on your skin so you get less fine lines and wrinkles. Yay Sunscreen! Remember to use sunscreen every day and not just when it is sunny, even on overcast days the rays still affect your skin.

Other skin prep  can include face primer which also helps make your makeup go on more smoothly and gives a professional look to your foundation. Now these come in all different types like mattifying or hydrating, they even have primers that help reduce the look of large pores as well, find one to suit your skin type that addresses your concern.

And last but not least is eye primer. You apply eye  primer on your eye area to help eyeshadow adhere to your lids, makes the area smoother for eyeshadow application and it also helps make your eye shadow colors pop. You don’t have to use one but I suggest you try doing your makeup with and without one and see if you see the difference in the color payoff of your eyeshadow; eye primer was a game changer for me when doing my eye looks.

I know it sounds like a lot but it literally takes about 5 minutes to do and it’s worth it. You’re probably thinking I have to do all that to put on makeup? Lol But honestly when it comes to make up your skin is your canvas so the better you take care of the canvas and the smoother it is the better the art, or in our case the makeup is going to look. Plus, you’ll have great skin and who doesn’t want that?
