Bolshoi Theatre New Rising Star: Maria Koshkaryova
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos by: Alisa Aslanova for Ballet Magazine Russia
MARIA KOSHKARYOVA brightly announced herself at the XIV International Ballet Competition in Moscow last summer, for the three rounds of which she prepared six numbers in a month. Being at that time a final year student at the Academy of Russian Ballet and an intern at the Mariinsky Theatre, Maria did not set herself any overarching goals and went to the competition with a modest “ not to surprise anyone ” attitude , but went home with first prize in the solo category.
At the same time, she first appeared on the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theater of Russia, which, according to her, she was immediately fascinated by.After graduating from the academy, Maria moved to Moscow, where she is about to begin her first full season as a soloist of the Bolshoi Theater ballet troupe. The young ballerina told our publication about combining study and internship in the theater, the difficult choice that determines one’s fate, and whether the opinions of others are important.

from anastasia lukina's recent ig stories, i think she's preparing to debut nikiya soon. if she really does, then she'll have all the classical roles in her repertoire (aurora, masha, giselle, o/o, nikiya).
I saw that! Lukina is such a mystery to me. She seems to have the drive and technique to make it to the top. (I didn’t realize that she had already danced O/O.) She’s physically stronger than Ilyushkina, and can deliver some bravado on stage, but has consistently been criticized for her tepid acting. So…it’s a wait and see in regards to a promotion.
BTW, it’s interesting that Ilyushkina debuted Sleeping Beauty just days before the “Big Ballet” show premieres on TV. The timing is not a coincidence. The theater is really behind her, but I give her debut a solid B. There were some moments where she bobbled and looked quite unsure of herself but then recovered. It’s tough because she followed Tereshkina, who at 40, danced Aurora impeccably. And then Nagahisa afterwards; Aurora is Nagahisa’s role.

Absolutely mandatory viewing - a truly spectacular DQ.
Highlights include:
0:00 Renata's stunning series of temps de flèche
2:57 Renata doing an assemblé so high that her head nearly goes outside of the camera frame
3:36 Act 1 Pas de trois, finishing with Kimin's signature consecutive double tours
4:14 Kitri's act I variation, complete with triple piqués en dehors and backbreaking leaps, all at whirlwind speed.
4:54 The superman Kimin, with one arm press lifts to both sides!
5:38 Charming Renata, so expressive in her eyes to go along with razor-sharp balances and mindblowing turns, ending the dizzying diagonal with a double piqués en dehors with her arms over her head.
7:58 Love how she jumps so freely into his arms with her head completely thrown back, so exciting!
8:40 Kimin's acting, so cute, he can't possibly even fake being angry with his Kitri, followed by lots of head-shaking DRAMA
8:58 That smirk, I'm dead. PLUS THE KISS TO THE AUDIENCE. Love the pandering that is DQ
9:47 Just too cute, have no further words. Renata's expressions are beyond adorable especially when she cheekily asks for more kisses. HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD YOU TWO
9:57 Ahh yes, she remembered now. Here comes the pageantry, especially effective with her fluttering her big doe eyes
10:25 Haven't seen this before, Kimin lovably tugging on Renata's skirt, "Hey, we're doing this gig to get hitched remember! Eyes on the prize!" Their expressions and chemistry is just pure gold.
11:19 Love how playful Renata is in the entree, with deep cambrés and bold arm and head movements, especially as she finishes the pirouettes. Very attractive to see the character of Kitri still shining in the grand pas.
11:54 Flawless lift. Notice Renata's superb coordination, in order to catch the music on time, she prepares her arms to start the turns while coming down from the lift.
12:20 Full split grand pas de chat with no momentum into the adagio preparation SO EXTRA, SO DON Q, I'M HERE FOR IT
12:30 "I'll just make a couple timestamps, I won't go crazy".....I lied to myself. But but this fouette is just too good, Kimin transitioning with both arms stretched wide to show her off. Renata's eyes just make me fall in love and I'm obsessed with her sassy transition into 4th position en pointe.
12:54 WHAT A MOMENT. TIME LITERALLY STOPPED....moving on
13:02 I promise I'll stop timestamping every 10 seconds but like, that arabesque balance is how every balance should be. Classy, without showboating, an active choice on when to exist, no needless 4th wall breaking, perfectly musical.
13:20 The pirouettes? Stellar. The transition out of it? Even better.
13:44 SHe's so confident here, she looks up and explodes her arms out before exiting the pirouette into the penché. That choice creates such feelings of elation.
14:11 Give me either one of their renveresé, thanks :)
14:16 Exiting this (gorgeously done) lift can be awkward, love how Renata uses her arms to transition into the next pose
15:02 YES to the traveling that's happening!!
15:33 Her smile. That's all. Delightful.
15:47 ADORABLE
16:13 Kimin's variation starts. I mean come on. He's just flying around. THOSE OUTSIDE ATTITUDE PIOUETTES. Super stable tours to high arabesques. Just too good.
17:04 Renata's variation starts. Jawdropping footwork, the petit rond de jambes are so clean and so precise, and she's moving so much when she does them. HERE FOR THE RENATA SASS. THe way her face lights up when the crowd starts clapping is priceless
17:57 CODA TIME!!!! Legitimately think no one has ever done this jump better than Kimin. And that manage, just looks like it takes no effort for him to complete. He just floats around like it's nothing.
18:21 Holy shit her fouettes are insane, AND THEN ALL DOUBLES IN THe SECOND HALF???? Aish, her tiny frustrated face appeared for half a second because she was the tiniest bit off and had to do one single. But what a fight, she's such a spitfire. I was on the edge of my seat.
18:45 Speechless. Just what??? How????? Kimin Kim, explain yourself????
19:15 THE WAY THEY SMILE. WHAT A SHOW!!!!
I did this during my first watch-through, I think you can gauge my level of excitement quite clearly ahaha. Let me know your favorite moments and if you enjoyed reading my first reaction :)

Coppelia at the Mariinsky
I'm hearing rumors that the Mariinsky will debut a new production of Coppelia staged by Alexander Sergeev…and it made me wonder when was the last time they performed Coppelia? It seems to have been a very long time ago. There are hundreds of clips of the Vikharev production at the Bolshoi. How/why did the Mariinsky let this ballet end up in a dust heap? So odd… Anyway, I'm glad it's coming back. (If rumors are true!) And I'm so curious about casting. The most recent clip that I could quickly find was from the Kirov in 1993, fearing Irina Shapchit dancing the Swanilda variation from Act 3.
youtube
I know nothing about Ms. Shapchit and discovered that she now goes by her married name, Irina Zavialova. She and her husband left Russia in 1995 for the West where they worked at several smaller ballet companies. It seems like she was one of the talents that "got away" in the turmoil of the 90s. She's now teaching in Norway from what I gather. Here's an interview with her from the 90s
It's almost a foregone conclusion that Shakirova will be first cast in this. BTW, I still haven't seen Ratmansky's production at La Scala, but I've heard that it's really good. It's on the list. The full production can be streamed on Medici TV:

It appears that Alexei Ratmansky, one of the world’s most famous and esteemed living ballet choreographers, born in St. Petersburg and an outspoken critic of the Russian war in Ukraine, has been canceled in Russia. His name has been removed from his works listed in the repertoires of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky ballet companies.
“It hurts,” Ratmansky wrote in an email to The Washington Post on Friday, “but it didn’t come as a surprise.” A Ratmansky ballet would be prized by any ballet company of note around the world. The creator of musically sophisticated, often witty and classically refined ballets, he has for several years been artist in residence at American Ballet Theatre.
Before that, he was artistic director of the Bolshoi from 2004 to 2009. The Bolshoi is scheduled to perform his “Flames of Paris” on Nov. 13, but its website no longer lists him as choreographer. Similarly, the Mariinsky repertoire lists his productions of “Anna Karenina,” “Little Humpbacked Horse” and “Concerto DSCH,” but his name no longer appears as the creator of any of them.
Throughout his career, Ratmansky has been widely identified as a Russian choreographer, but he recently told The Post that the war has complicated that. He was born in Russia, but his father is from Kyiv, and Ratmansky grew up there and danced with the Ukrainian National Ballet early in his career. His family, and his wife’s family, still live in Kyiv. He has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine artists and recently said that “since the war started, I am absolutely Ukrainian with all my soul, because that is where my heart is.”
When the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Ratmansky, who is based in New York, was in Moscow working with Bolshoi dancers. At that time, he said in his email, he asked both the Bolshoi and Mariinsky “to suspend my ballets. Instead, they decided to keep the ballets but suspend my authorship of these ballets. It is illegal, yes, but what is legal in Russia after February 24?” Ratmansky added, “I would like to believe that both theaters were under a lot of pressure, and it wasn’t their own initiative. But who knows.”
Officials at the Bolshoi and Mariinsky did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The move feels sadly familiar to one close observer of the Russian arts. “It’s the old playbook,” said Simon Morrison, a music professor at Princeton University and author of the Russian ballet history “Bolshoi Confidential.” “For centuries Russia appropriated Ukrainian culture while abusing Ukraine, and here Ratmansky, who’s proud of his Ukrainian background, is effectively canceled in Russia for protesting that abuse.”
