WOW i never thought i would find this ask box open but thank goodness. i need advice on how to collab w someone AND help improve their writing skills at the same time. my friend and i are writing a book together and her writing skills are more novice than novel-level. she knows this but i’m not sure how to give her pointers to improve her writing without making her discouraged. the sections she’s written, i’ve had to rewrite them and i’m worried she won’t wanna work w me anymore. any advice?

Definitely talk things out with your friend. She’s the one who can tell you the kind of feedback that works for her. Some people would like you going in and editing their work. Others would want you to tell them what to work on and how to go about it. Others still would want to make an attempt on their own, and still others would want to be given some resources where they could read up on and practice their skills outside of the story you’re collaborating on. 

If you could help her identify the areas for improvement, I think that would be a good start. Is it just grammar-related? Is it about plot structure? Characterization? The more specific you can be, the better. 

And of course, while you’re providing that kind of feedback don’t forget to let your friend know where she’s already doing well or has a lot of promise. Highlight areas where you’ve seen improvement, and if you’re learning anything from her then that’s something I’m sure she’d love to hear. 

Communication is going to be key in this kind of relationship. The way you like to give and receive feedback might not match up with how she likes to give and receive it, so you’ll need to help each other understand what works for you- and what doesn’t.

I'm so sorry it’s taken me so long to answer!! I've been so anxious the last couple of days (as I'm sure everyone has been) and keeping up with online stuff hasn’t been the easiest 

1. today has been great! went for a 3 mile walk on the trails around where I live and now my family has the grill going. there’s a nice breeze and it’s been raining on and off and it’s the warmest day we’ve had this year which always puts me in a good mood 

2. lol a Tumblr post about plants 

3. I've been playing lots of games on my phone lol I have two consoles and tons of games but for whatever reason these free apps on my phone are easier to zone out to so I've been playing them lots 

4. I've been working on decluttering and deep cleaning, I want to write more and finish my hydra fic, but my focus is at an all time low and even reading’s been tough so we’ll see how it goes!

i miss watching disney shows i’ll definitely look them up. i still need to watch both of the alice movies! there’s a theater by my house that does $5 movies maybe i’ll go
