In celebration of me just picking up a Toyota Altezza Gita/Lexus IS300 Sportcross what are some of your favourite wagons or shooting brakes
yOOOOOO!!!!
Okay now I have to ask, is it actually an imported Toyota or did you add that just for potential clarification?
I should give context for folx out there (apparently folx is a 'more friendly' spelling to some? oh the wild wonders of language): y'all know how Lexus is a brand Toyota founded to move upmarket? Yeah, they didn't need to do that at home because Japan is much better protected from too-good-for-Toyotas-itis: I mean, if the emperor can drive (well, be driven in) Toyotas I am pretty sure you can afford to be seen in one. As a result, until 2005 Japan got Lexus models but not the Lexus brand, receiving them with Toyota branding instead (and different model names too, since the two letter acronyms were a Lexus thing).
To get to your question, though:
SEDANS I LIKE THE WAGON VERSION OF TOO
Toyota Altezza Gita/Lexus IS300 Sportcross (:D)
Tumblr media
Indeed, I love your car! The JZ (for the folx: a six cylinder inline engine series widely regarded to be Toyota's best, capable of truly monstrous power with the right hands fiddling under the hood), the sporty, timeless styling, Toyota reliability and Lexus build quality, how no matter the market they refused to use a normal word for wagon, the chrome taillights so iconic they spawned an entire trend in 2000s car styling (especially aftermarket - hell, they still call them Altezza taillights!)... and that gauge cluster oh my GAWD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII Wagon
Tumblr media
I don't think the street equivalent of one of the most legendary rally cars (and certainly, with the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, part of the most legendary rally war) needs any introduction. I just wanted to make sure you knew that between '05 and '07 the closest thing to a rally car a dealer would sell you also came in wagon form. In Japan only, of course. Because if Japan can't keep a cool thing to themselves, they'll make a cooler version to keep to themselves. Always.
Morris Mini Traveller/Austin Mini Countryman/Mini Clubman Estate
How do Mini fans do it, man
Tumblr media
Who doesn't love the Mini? Who doesn't love the wagon's funky rear doors?
Tumblr media
And who doesn't hate the time they tried to modernize its front end for the 70s? Me.
Tumblr media
Like come on guys. You need to find within yourselves the intellectual honesty to admit that this fucks.
Tumblr media
I rest my case. Let's move on.
Citroën DS Break/Familiale/Safari/Estate/Station Wagon
How do Citroën fans do it, man
Tumblr media
Yes, the steering wheel had a single spoke - and by the way, that's it straight. It was angled like that so that, in a crash, it would guide your your body to the right - because there weren't seatbelts yet in 1955. Yeah. This is a 1955 design. The French are always been and likely always will be hellbent on being weird - and the Citroën DS is a distillation of the good that can come from that. It had pillarless windows! variable height suspension so effective you could only tell you had a flat by sound - and could change that flat by just having the suspension lift it for you! It had rear fenders held on by one bolt! Hell, in 1967, it got directional lights that turned with the wheels!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
IN 1967!!!! Few cars have them right now today!!!
Oh, and also, most interesting to us right now, it has the greatest vibe gap between sedan and wagon I have ever seen. Allow me to illustrate (and slightly exacerbate by cherry picking examples).
Tumblr media
You get out of this with suit and tie and a watch you change the time of with felt tweezers.
Tumblr media
You get out of this with a lab coat, plane goggles, a propeller tophat and a concoction that violates a semester's worth of laws of physics. And, potentially, seven of the biggest freaks the planet could muster, because yes, this could seat up to eight, thanks to a front bench, a middle bench, and trunk seats. "You mean a third row?" HAHA. NO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honorable mentions:
Mazda 6, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla KE70, Audi RS4, BMW E30, Fiat 500 Giardinetta, most '60s yankee landyachts that got a wagon, and all the ones that escape me at this moment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WAGONS I LIKE MORE THAN THE SEDAN VERSION
Audi RS6 (second generation)
Tumblr media
Here's what happened (presumably): Audi had bought Lamborghini. Great! Now Lamborghinis could use Audi interior bits, a very welcome change because Lamborghini were not exactly the interior controls GOATs. (To stick to a representative example and not be here all day, when set to Fahrenheit the Diablo's digital climate controls changed the temperature by two degree increments except between 63F and 64F and 72F and 73F. And at the extremes it said LOF and HIF because the F did not go away. So yeah.) But this also gave Audi access to Lamborghini parts - and, a couple years in, one of the engineers told the others "Jo [German for "Yo"], there's gotta be something cool we can do with Lamborghini parts!" And the other was like "Maybe we can make the new RS6 [Audian for Real Sporty version of the A6 executive sedan] with a Lambo V10! That'd be a fast fucking sedan." And the first one replied "And a fast fucking wagon too!" And their eyes locked, lighting up with villainous thrill.
I mean, I could wax lyrical about the all wheel drive and super expensy carbon ceramic brakes and the flared fenders et al but if this garbage 5 second clip does not convince you that this busts ass how could I.
youtube
Toyota Corolla E110
Tumblr media
Well that's quite the jump. How could I possibly be interested in a car like this? If cars were meals this would be a plate of warm water. There is only one way to possibly get excited about a car this boring: personal significance. And sure enough, my Yaris-pursuing father was instead upsold a Corolla exactly like this, discounted to empty the lot in preparation for its facelift - and one day he used it to drive my momma to a hospital, they got out of it in two, and some tribulations later they got back in it in three - third being a hot-off-the-press me. This, then, was the car that was in the driveway through my stumbling infancy - and never hinted at letting us down. We then traded it for an Opel that gave us loads of trouble, the recipient traded it for an Audi that gave him loads of trouble, and on the Corolla kept getting passed on right to wherever it rests today, never letting anyone down - loyalty likely rewarded by a crusher turning it to mush. And I want another shot at doing this car right.
Okay, actually, there's another way to get excited about such a car: find out about the inevitable sick-ass Japan-only version. In this case Toyota figured they'd fit the Sprinter Carib (because Corolla wasn't near a silly enough name for the Japanese market) with a 20V 4A-GE Blacktop and a 6 speed manual, or in less technical terms "one of the greatest non-turbo powertrains of its size to ever graze a production car". Presumably just for the sake of keeping it Japan-only for the sake of annoying me personally.
Tumblr media
Well, joke's on them, because my idea goes even harder: replicating the powertrain the hatchback version competed in World Rally Championship with - 4WD and all.
Tumblr media
This but wagon, essentially. And then bin it in a tree in 15 seconds like I always do on the rally sim.
Honorable mentions:
1970 Dodge Coronet SW, Nissan Stagea, Volvo 940/960 wagon (which I talked about in another post!), and again all the others that I forgot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shooting brakes are gonna need their separate post because otherwise it hits the image limit :/
Links in blue are posts of mine explaining the words in question - if you liked this post, you might like those!

Speciale Motori 2024: Škoda Superb Wagon, Mercedes-Benz Classe G, Kia K4, Triumph Rocket 3 Storm

5 Most Underrated JDM Cars To Modify
Between Drift Tax, Social Media Influencers, and the great import apocalypse, reasonably priced JDM legend cars have become a thing of the past. This leaves prospective enthusiasts to look into less praised platforms to try to find their diamond-in-the-rough, and ultimately the car they will use to cultivate their entire automotive persona, but fret not, the JDM market is full of underrated underdogs that have the potential to catapult you into the illusive 10’s, look tasty on bags, or induce oversteer so snappy that spiral parking ramps will tremble at the very sound of your $100 welded diff. Today we will explore 5 Underrated JDM Platforms to modify… in reverse order.
5. Subaru Forester
The Subaru community has earned the distinction of being one of the most loyal to their platform. Despite headgasket failures, equal-length debates, and industry leading depreciation, Subaru’s bang for its buck can not be overlooked. Often equipped with turbochargers, all-wheel drive, and manual transmissions Subaru is an obvious choice for many, but when we look past the veil of the STi, one model stands above the rest. The Subaru Forester, specifically the SF, SG, and SJ chassis, offers practicality and modularity in a way that has escaped modern commuters. In terms of practicality, this Forester is the ultimate budget camper, friend hauler, and parts hauler thanks largely to it’s wagon. However, where the magic happens… or could happen is right between the headlights. From the factory, these cars came with quite a few engine options, most notably the EJ20T for the SF and SG and the gangster EE20T in the SJ. When paired with one of Subaru’s many 5 speed manual transmissions, this translates to roughly 170 to 230 horsepower making it’s way to the pavement by way of all four tires, and with the right inputs and modifications, that’s fun. Personally, My SG would feature the EJ20T and I’d match it with the full CUSCO Chassis Reinforcement suite and sway bars and bring it down to my level on a set of KSport Kontrol Pro Coilovers. To get the most induction noise possible, I would add a Perrin Cold Air Intake, a Perrin Equal Length header, and an Invidia G200 cat back. To ensure we get the power to the wheels, I would run a McLeod Street Elite Clutch Kit and call it a build, but there’s so much more to do to make your Forester yours.
4. Mazda RX-8
What’s an Iori blog without mentioning Mazda. While I could easily mention one of the 4 generations of Miata, it’s been done. Most of the generations of the RX-7 are quickly becoming unobtanium, so that’s not fair. And despite their development of their new Turbo Inline 6 cylinder engine, Mazda has fallen out of automotive performance grace. However, before the tomb was sealed, Mazda gave us the controversial RX8. While the Renesis didn’t do much in terms of elevating the rotary design, it did serve as both the RX8’s gift and it’s curse. Industry leading engine failures has catapulted the RX8 to Maserati levels of depreciation, meaning a solid running example could be purchased and road worthy for under $5,000. However, the power plant isn’t as important as the RX8 versatility as a high performance motorsport chassis. Truly a car that can be built for any discipline, while boasting the engine bay real estate for JZ, LS, and REW swaps, the RX-8 will forever be tuner car royalty and it’s flexibility is the key of that claim. All swaps aside, my series II RX-8 would breath in through a TAKEDA Retain Stage-2 Pro Dry Intake and out through the A’PEXi Hybrid Mega Evo Catback for maximum flames, but no drone. I would ditch the factory bumpers for the Vertex Lang Full Body Kit, lower it on Tanabe Sustec Pro CR Coilovers, and having performing as well as it looks with a VR Tuned ECU Flash to give my FD3S a run for it’s money. Of course it would be painted Phantom Blue Mica. What about yours?
3. Lexus IS-300
Known by it’s JDM surname, the Altezza, when debuted in Japan October 1998 and announced for release the following year in the United States, was destined to be a low key classic. Picked up by the development team of Need For Speed Underground 2, we got a first glimpse into what the Altezza was capable of. As the 2JZ-GTE dominated the import scene, it’s milder sibling, the 2JZ-GE which powered the IS-300 was vibing in the background waiting for its day in the limelight. Well, that day is finally here. Easily one of the most underrated drift chassis in rotation today, the 1st Gen IS-300 (XE-10) produces enough torque to slide the rear around most grassroots corners and is easily improved upon without breaking the bank. Often called the Honda Civic of the Toyota realm, its simple lines and mass production numbers makes the IS-300 an easy choice for any list of underrated performers. Obviously, my Altezza’s 2JZ-GE would get the full Turbosmart treatment with a splash of Deatschwerks to put me at about 300ftlbs of torque, Endless SS-M Sport brake pads to slow me down, APEXi N1 Type EVX Coilovers to keep me down, and an APEXi WS2 Cat-back to keep the neighbors happy. Before you ask, yes, I would cut the knuckles and retrofit a AgencyPower Handbrake for science.
2. Lexus SC300/SC400
No car fits the monicker of budget Supra better than the SC300/SC400. Similar chassis to the MK-4 Supra, the SC features two very capable power plant options, a luxurious interior, and a resale value so low it’s disrespectful. However, that works in our favor. Available with a big torque V8, but handicapped by its slush box automatic transmission, the SC400 and it’s 1UZ produce an engine note like no other and makes enough power to do just about whatever you would need the car to do. On the other hand, the SC300 is arguably one of the most versatile of the SC platform as it is powered by a 2JZ-GE inline 6 engine that’s begging for forced induction and features manual transmission options. Pair this with the leather interior, digital cluster, and menacing factory stance, you have a car that do VIP or Stance, Drag or Drift, and do it all very well. As for me, I can think of no better use for the budget Supra than holding angle in drift form. That’s why I’d do a body roll delete utilizing Revel Touring Sport Damper Coilovers, support a degree or two of positive rear camber with the Powerhouse Racing Adjustable Rear Control Arms, and keep it classy with he Revel Medallion Touring S Catback Exhaust System. And yes, I would definitely be running a Borg-Warner Pre-Catalytic Converter Muffler (Turbocharger).
1. 1992-2000 Honda Civic
I couldn’t think of a more controversial underrated number one than the 5th and 6th Generation Honda Civic. I know it’s hard to call something underrated when it has the distinction of being one of the most widely modified platforms in history, but hear me out. The late 80’s to 2000 was the Honda Civic’s golden era. Accompanied by the Acura Integra, once these cars hit the used market, the term Lego cars was coined and we began seeing swaps that utilize almost every letter of the alphabet. From B-Series to H2B to Frankenstein D’s to super uncommon ZC swap, you can put almost any Honda power plant in the EG and EK civics without much modification. You can even make them All-Wheel Drive with minimal effort. This and the classic look of the EG and EK Honda Civics, earn my top vote for most underrated Tuner Car. While I don’t have one myself, an EM1 with a H2B (H series Engine, B series transmission), a Garrett G-Series, and a Single Bride GIAS III KING pilot seat, propelled by all 4 wheels is what it would look like if I did. Now, obviously you disagree with me, but let me know what your most underrated JDM cars to modify are. Once you get it, hit us up at Vivid Racing so we can turn your underdog into top dog.

THE TOP 10 VEHICLES FOR TOWING PT. 2
Tumblr media
Last week we started our Top 10 cars for towing list. Here’s Part 2, with the rest of our favourite cars to tow a load with and get out of Sydney this summer:
6. Jeep Grand Cherokee
If you’re looking for value for your money the Jeep Grand Cherokee is where you’re going to find it. A Laredo 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel is part of this five-speed automatic with a dual-range transfer case. Nothing presents a challenge for this machine with a towing capacity of 3,500kg and the diesel engine will give you much better fuel economy than its unleaded petrol siblings.
7. Isuzu D-Max
A ute that’s built like a tank, this beast is perfect for off-roading and bringing along the essentials. Its 3.0 litre four-cylinder turbo diesel will see you easily pulling a maximum of 3,000kg.
8. Mazda BT50 The Mazda BT50 boasts some firm suspension that makes it an ideal towing car. It comes with a 3.2 litre five-cylinder turbo diesel engine that can take up to 3,350kg and it even comes with a handy stability control system to help prevent trailer sway.
9. Toyota 70 Series Landcruiser
This one is an absolute classic and perfect for you if you’re going out to the bush. Choose from dual or single cab or even a five-door wagon and you’ll still be able to tow up to 3,500kg wherever you want. With a fantastic 4.5 litre turbo diesel V8 engine, the great outdoors becomes your playground.
10. Toyota 200 Series Landcruiser If you’re looking for something a bit more swish than the 70 series, then the 200 series is what you want. The specs are pretty much interchangeable between the two models, it’s really just the look that separates the two.
Your ideal towing car is bound to be in our top 10 so why not review last week’s five in The Top 10 Vehicles for Towing Pt. 1 and start planning your next big outdoor adventure?

Could the Mazda 6 be replaced by a Chinese electric car?
It’s no secret the current Mazda 6 mid-size sedan and wagon range is nearing the end of its life, but we may finally have a clue about its successor – and it’s probably not what you were expecting. While rumours of a rear-drive Mazda 6 based on the company’s Large Architecture – the basis of the CX-60 and CX-90 SUVs – with inline six engines have been swirling for years, Mazda has ruled out a new…

Mazda Capella Review
Mazda Capella, a medium-sized vehicle manufactured by Mazda from 1970 to 2002, is known as the 626. The vehicle, which is sold as Capella in Japanese domestic markets, is known as the Mazda 626 in other major markets. Ford, which was Mazda's partner at the time, used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and ford probe. Designed to compete against Japanese mid-size giants such as the Honda Accord, Toyota Corona, and Nissan Blubbered, the Capella has already become Mazda's successor in 2002. The vehicle is named after Capella, the brightest star in the constellation Auriga. The first Capella was introduced in May 1970 and lasted until 1978.
The first Capella was introduced in May 1970, which lasted until 1978 and was presented as a medium-sized alternative to the small Mazda familiar and the large Mazda luce.  It is powered by four-cylinder SOHC valve engines with a 1.5 or 1. 6-litre display. Its output is 92 or 100PS, respectively, producing 144 metres of torque for the larger displacement version.
The first Mazda Capella models all had square headlights, but the rotary-engine models have had round dual headlamps since October 1971. Since 1972, all models have received dual headlamps. The first-generation Capella had become the world's hotbed with its superpower and innovative design, and it was affectionately known to many fans as 'Case No Capella'. Mazda introduced a rotary engine version with automatic transmission in October 1971 and the second-generation Capella was launched in February 1974. Amid increasing environmental awareness, Mazda's anti-pollution engine has been able to be properly equipped.
The third-generation Capella was introduced in October 1978 as a balanced high-quality family car in the global market, and the aerodynamic performance, which was highly rated on the first-generation model of this vehicle, has been further modified with a hood that is now as low as possible and tilted to the front grille. The hardtop of this vehicle is just 0.
Claims a drag coefficient of 38, but it was quite surprising at the time. The third-generation Capella paved the way for the global expansion of Mazda, and this significantly increased awareness of the brand, especially in Europe. The fourth-generation Capella was released in May 1987 with a revamped GD platform, which remained in production in Japan until 1996.
Its engines were new, although they still emphasised torque rather than full power. For the fifth generation, the GE series sedan and the hatchback dropped the name of the Capella, although it retained 626 crowns in the export markets. The Capella is a sedan station wagon, which is available globally as a luxury with a five-door hatchback, The development of Capella was greatly drawn from the concept of 'super engineering', which refers to the Samrat, which assumes multiple activities that are fundamentally difficult to integrate and each develops to a higher level without sacrificing any of the others. This approach is still evident in Mazda's cars even today. How about removal of old car or if you wish to sell you car parts as well, you can visit this website and find a quote.

Mazda 6 to live on in Australia despite UK axing
The Mazda 6 has been axed in another market, but the company says there are no plans to discontinue it here. The mid-sized sedan and wagon range has been discontinued in the UK market, with a company spokesperson telling Autocar the decision was made due to dwindling sales and the increasing popularity of SUVs. It will remain on sale, however, in select markets across the Channel. “[The] Mazda 6…
