Julia’s big Four-Zero. Why are you the one feeling old? Fuck. Is this what your twenties are actually like? There isn’t much you want to remember from the first time you went through them. Then again, Jack’s under a different kind of pressure these days. 

The healing bruise on your jaw makes it a little hard to smile evenly, but you manage. With a good concealer and some ice, even the shittiest of meetings won’t slow your roll. You brush a hand over the velvet of your suit. Dark red turned black in the evening shadow. Definitely not nervously. This might be a bit of a gamble, but you’re feeling lucky.

The gathering is a little smaller than expected. Not too different from the gala where she first took Jack out. But oh, the people. 

You never had the courage to ask Julia as Miriam, but a little digging shows that she made a lot of enemies after your untimely exit. The same old game: let one friend die, alienate the rest. You never would have guessed that some of them would have said yes. Sentinel, Pyroclast, even Chen’s in there, being undoubtedly very uncomfortable. The band’s back together, for one night only. 

Even through the bay windows, Julia is resplendent as ever. Brilliant under the chandelier. Dressed to the nines. A charming hostess, playing the part of older and wiser. Little do they know.

MIGUEL: he’s at a 45 daring right now! mid level, not too crazy. he’s pretty careful: likes to plan, stay within his wheelhouse, do his research. and then you have random outbursts of Batshit Energy from the most normal man in existence: fighting the regene, tailing HG, the works.

28 what do they find attractive in others? what’s a turn-off?

MIRIAM: this one is only capable of falling in love with people under incredibly distressing circumstances. so traits that come with being good in a crisis: resourcefulness. adaptability. a level of compassion. absolutely bonkers amounts of loyalty.

a turn off, hmm… rose-coloured glasses, especially when they’re pointed at her. fine, fine, think what you want about the world but she doesn’t like the feeling of inevitably disappointing someone. also on the person’s end, it speaks to a level of naïveté and unwillingness to analyze that is for sure going to grate after a while. (she even yells at julia about it bc For Real you know better than that!!!)

35 if they could have any other superpower, what would they choose?

ELMO: flying. freedom and movement and not having to be Stuck Somewhere if they don’t want to be—.they just think it’s cool. yes they’re scared of heights but only when they don’t have control! barring that: teleportation. never be late again—they yell at ricardo about it, but only bc he’s somehow always later than they are.

🍉 [WATERMELON] What will your OC take to the grave?

MIGUEL: he's usually of the opinion that most secrets are more trouble to hide than they're worth but--the puppet. to his grave or the puppet's grave, it doesn't really matter. just thought of having to explain the bodysnatching gives him a stomachache. he doesn't have beef with the puppet itself--orion's body is easy to work with, and the previous proprietor was... probably okay. maybe? more precisely, miguel gets weirded out by what the puppet allows him to do. he's hooked on how painlessly that body moves, how quickly orion's smiles come. but it feels like trying to run away, and it makes him feel worse coming back to his actual (achy, awkward) body. more than that, his outsider scar acts up in the puppet. he's always been responsible for other people('s stuff), but he knows that the puppet isn't real, isn't accounted for. which means it doesn't really matter what he does with it, and wow, that's kind of an uncomfortable first thought to have, huh...

🥔 [POTATO] What do they have that others see as a flaw, but they don't care about?

MIRIAM: she lives and dies by her own reckoning. if you want to make sure a job is done right, do it yourself. keep everything in view and, if possible, in your hands. she knows that she might be wrong, and that there will be consequences, but she will choose to go down with a ship if she thinks that she had enough of a role in its sinking (because that's what passes for accountability around here). it makes her shortsighted in her planning, intractable in a group setting, obsessive over individuals--and forever lurking in the shittiest, scariest places in LD. miriam doesn't care, however, because this is a side effect of decades-long isolation and an ingrained distrust in authority--there's just no other way to be. she was like this even in the sidestep days, but Progress Had Been Made and julia was probably mildly horrified to realize miriam had backslid in the time she'd been "dead" (not that julia knew why).

🌶️ [HOT PEPPER] Who would your OC declare their sworn enemy if they could meet them?

ELMO: the "if they could meet them" is an interesting point. part of being a murder anarchist is having it out for a lot of people that you have never properly met--if anything, it makes it easier to hate people if you don't know them. getting to know them... means getting soft. fragile. them or you. and surprisingly for someone who does what elmo does, there's really quite a lot to like about others, most of the time. most likely, the only person elmo would hate if they met up would be a copy of themself. loud, pushy, stubborn, jokes hiding a mean, paranoid streak underneath. so deeply aware of what's (been made) wrong with them that it's all they can see. it's like putting a cat in front of a mirror--familiar, but in a way that breeds competition, not companionship. fun fact: this is also why their friendship with ortega is Like That.

miri's got a diamond shaped face--kind of long, high cheekbones, narrow forehead and jaw. all of her smiles tend to tilt to the right, first, before--if--they actually reach her entire face. the orbs are not cerulean aksdfnasnfakjsdfnaf she has hazel eyes, in the muddy green-brownish way. they were always a little bit like that, but Recent Eye Colour Lore has given her a corona of green right around the pupil. you kind of have to get in close to really notice, and unfortunately for her, ortega has.

the first thing people notice when--if--they look at her... she looks intense. sure, she's focused if not always on the here and now, but also--deeply ill-tempered. ron swanson vibes. it's the mild-moderate RBF on top of raccoon eyes (both natural and acquired).

night: What does your OC wear to sleep? Do they have a favorite pair of PJs, or are they more the birthday suit type?

MIRI IS BORING alas. she mostly goes to sleep in... uh, whatever she falls asleep in. jeans and boots and jacket included, until she wakes up four hours later disoriented and irritated, and then just like--hurriedly kicks off layers and goes back to bed in her underwear.

if she has the wherewithal to change PRIOR, she'll switch into sweatpants and a tank top.

outerwear: What's your OC's outerwear situation? Jacket, sweater, cloak? What sort of weather do they deal with most and how do they protect themselves?

miguel in civ gear is the king of the ludicrously out-of-season Fancy Puffer. he calls it quiet luxury, i call it truly the most expensive way to look like someone's dad taking the dog out for a walk. as he grows into being a mob boss and starts being that persona a) in public and b) out of armour, i imagine he picks up some very fun and swishy trench coats. black, obviously. and expensive.

he deals with... LD weather, which is not nearly cold enough to merit This Whole Deal. for one thing, he gets driven around for work. for another, it's california?? he tends to prefer umbrellas for rain, but will resort to using a hood if that's the Vibe he wants to put forward that day

9 how honest are they?

- she more… withholds information than outright lies. what you get is the (sometimes semi-filtered) truth, but you do get exceedingly little. the thing is—she’s bad at it. under physical and emotional pressure (e.g. ortega’s apartment) she’s liable to let things slip, which can be… inconvenient. funnily enough, if she didn’t hate the idea of having to keep up the lie, she’d be a phenomenal liar. she makes it work a bit like gambling: it’s not that you trust her—you’d be a fool to trust her entirely—can you really afford to put her to the test?

18 what is their greatest fear?

being lonely. being unforgivable. on the opposite end: being under someone else’s thumb forever. these are not that far apart. the natural cost of refusing to let people close enough to control you, is that you never let them close enough to love you either. and then you miss them like an open wound and they have control over you forever anyway.

23 how do they feel about possessing people?

HA like they recognize that objectively it’s a bad thing to do, and they’re not going to try to possess you to your face but otherwise no real qualms. hero/villain possessions like with argent are rare: pain in the ass, don’t shit in your own backyard type stuff. mostly little things like the puppet at the beginning of rebirth: pick someone up, dust them off, do some minor job—then put them down, safe and only a little confused after. maybe even drop them where they were going. if elmo was, you know, mangling a guy’s brain on the reg, they’d feel a little weirder, but as it stands they’re confident enough in their own telepathic skill that they don’t really feel the need to feel bad. nice and easy: you won’t feel a thing.

34 are they nostalgic for their sidestep days or eager to move on?

they… miss the optimism. the certainty that they were doing the right thing the best way they knew how. the feeling of trusting someone to have your back. elmo still likes being liked, even after everything. but what they really don’t like, is being pushed back and covered up. going back to sidestep days means ignoring all the shitty things that happened after—and if it means addressing the issue and getting payback, then they just have to accept that that time in their life is irrecoverable. of course things are worse now: the truth is out. (this is what they get so mad at ortega for. what do you mean we’re back in the good old days?)

13 do they want to be well-known, or do they prefer to remain obscure?

his arrogance stat is at—16? which is so funny for a guy who is actively harassing the kingpin of LD. i think he wants to be… widely-known, but not well. on a personal level, that’s safer, for him and the people who really know him: chentega, the rangers, bo and the crew, even mortum.

but on a professional level? it makes it easier to build an organization when no one knows what they’re looking for. the public has no face, no name, no discernable agenda, but he’s there and the other shoe will drop someday. hollow ground can keep the name: he doesn’t want to be at the forefront of the city’s cultural consciousness, but he’s seating himself somewhere deep in the urban amygdala.

18 what is their greatest fear?

he would say that the greatest fear has already happened. by “dying” as sidestep, he found out exactly how little he mattered to the system and the world at large. whatever good he tried to do as a hero and as an individual got washed away in the end, and for his troubles he got years of physical and mental torment. so like—there’s not much worse it can get!

but that’s mostly a coverup: haha, i’m not scared anymore, he says, scared. these days he mostly worries about things getting out of hand. he’s not afraid of losing, not afraid of death—he’s nervous that he will eventually be overtaken and destroyed by the consequences of his own actions. so he prunes it down, tightens the leash, keeps the inner circle small and his connections private—gets rid of anything that unmoors him from the reality of his situation. and hopefully that’s enough.

MIRIAM: likes moss green and other earth tones--rust red and burnt umber. the occasional yellow brown and denim blue. (which isn't too different from what i think she's like: miriam is pretty transparent, no matter how hard she tries, and she's always a mix of stuff that's practical and workable, and secretly sort of cozy-comfy deep down.)

ELMO: likes bright stuff and big prints! dandelion yellow and azure blue and neon pink and metallics/holographics. fun, cheerful, distracting harmless. (i like them with shades of purple mostly, because it really shows off that duality--the colour of bruises and stormclouds, but also lavender and gemstones. take your pick.)

MIGUEL: he'll say he prefers black. if you tell him off about being boring, he'll say blue. also boring but then he'll be grumpy because those are my actual favourites? why would you ask if-- (he's not wrong about the black, although he thinks puffer-jacket-black and i think chrome-black. i also think like, deep burgundy, as dark as it can go. for the HG parallels and because you can't quite tell what's going on until the light hits it just right.)

MIRIAM: very aware that Bad Things are happening, but she's so hyperfocused on what's happening in her immediate circle that she misses a LOT of the bigger picture. like, she's streetwise, but most "irrelevant info" (miri PLEASE) just doesn't make it onto the graffiti notes yk?

ELMO: very aware that Bad Things are happening, very aware of how big it's spreading. are they one of those Bad Things? psh, nawww... haha......

MIGUEL: the most normal about it. very aware that Bad Things are happening, trying to address them...? sort of. He Pretends He Does Not See Them (But He Does). it's ok: if he's right about HG, things will resolve themselves as he goes.

🍏 [GREEN APPLE] How do they differ from the norm and how are they punished for it?

miri was a terrible regene during farm 1. not unskillful or ineffective, just extremely difficult to direct. she was good enough at whatever she was doing that the staff worked around her, made her think things were her idea in the first place, kept her quiet. but they also kept her extremely segregated from pretty much everyone else, so that protocol stayed intact and that sort of behaviour didn't spread. so sure, she was able to do whatever she needed to, but if she failed--well. no one was especially interested in rescusing her. (this also meant that it wasn't until farm 2 when she realized exactly how Uncanny Valley the average cuckoo is to both humans and regenes--and by then, the other cuckoos were pretty weirded out by the kid who Came Back.)

on a non-regene level, she just obviously Came Back Wrong Broken. hurt and struggling in ways that no one knows how to fix, even if she was inclined to let them. she's back, and not happy about it. chen in particular has a knack for walking in when she's Thousand Yard Staring and asking fucked up questions or whatever. he doesn't mean to punish her, but given the fact that she's very blatantly avoiding everyone except julia, it does trip a lot of alarm bells.

🍐 [PEAR] What is their current social standing? If they could change it, would they, and to what?

bad, but not low, if that makes sense. widely known, but not deeply. she's got 72 infamy as the villain. the puppet is active and well-regarded in the underworld. but yk. mad bad and dangerous to know or however it goes. not good people to be affiliated with. outside of the job, she doesn't talk to anyone. water plant lair, distant with the rangers except for ortega and sometimes even her. everyone's just a leetle bit sketched out, and they're right to be.

she probably wouldn't change it. she should, because she's just--very lonely. but she's teetering on the edge of regret as it is, she can't afford to get any more attached. it makes the job easier when you don't need to bring people with you. (disclaimer: this is more than a little delusional. miri, just bc you don't bring people doesn't mean they won't hide in the trunk of ur car anyway.)

🥑 [AVOCADO] What will they never back down about, even if it makes them seem bad?

MIRIAM: her vendetta. does it even qualify as a vendetta when she doesn't know what it is or who it's really for? (i see you hero-hunter "something big"...) it's just this--inarticulate, incomprehensible anger, like an itch she can't get at, but can't let go of either. need to move, need to do something. fighting and training is almost peaceful, but the itch always comes back after everything is done. honestly, she'd back down if she thought she could--just go away and be charge's silly little civilian partner--but she knows that it would drive her nuts. she would rip up the foundations of everything she and julia built, trying to chase that bug, and she wouldn't be able to forgive herself for that.

ELMO: ...pretty much anything, if you come at them about it in a bad enough way. tfw an argument is so bad it gets added to the Lore. it's gotta be the murder. they recognize that they're supposed to be sorry--and they are very sorry for upsetting danny/ortega/whomstever--but they aren't about to recant or anything. murder is bad! they get that. everytime an argument arises about it, people think they're being morally uppity--not true. they've seen the depths, they've been there--they know exactly what they're dealing with and exactly how much these people suck. and sometimes the only way to deal with a situation that sucks that bad is to get down in the dirt with everyone else. if this means they have to leave danny up where he belongs, that's fine. some of these folks are going to hell, and ellian's going to meet them there.

MIGUEL: miguel's got a relatively mellow temperament when he's not ragging on shitty management decisions, but he has iron-clad boundaries around his self-image and agency. which means that he's out of the hero game. forever. it's a mold that doesn't fit: he doesn't have to be a hero to be good or kind or productive--and plenty of heroes aren't. getting... eaten up by the ideology as it exists in the FWT was the worst thing that that happened during the sidestep days. even as someone who loves his friends as intensely as he does, he really does believe that you are all you'll have in the end, no matter what--so when the time comes, make sure you've really got yourself, you know? (he didn't, the last time.)

julia, easily. the "fling" that lasted as long as some marriages. lichrally til death do us part. miri's been in love with her for almost half her life. jules started out as a kind of anchor, a lightning rod (haha) for everything interesting and beautiful about being alive in LD--so rebellious and active and part of things. these days, it's much the same but now miri's mostly afraid for her safety. kinda wish julia could be uh, less part of things, but neither of them live quietly. she's a soft little loser so she clings to julia when she's around but then she makes sure she's rarely around. how do you protect someone when you're the one most likely to hurt them?

🍒 [CHERRY] Who is your OC's perfect companion?

above all, anyone who hangs out with miriam has to be persistent. she gets snippy when she's nervous and she's nervous a lot. it also helps to be perceptive on some level--it takes a bit of work to sort out what's actually going on. she gravitates more toward people who are similarly serious and quiet, but very much to her surprise, she keeps coming back to people who somehow make her laugh. not that it's hard to make her laugh, really, but the semi-constant :/// expression kind of puts off most attempts.

i think the closest thing to an actual friendship she has--in her own body, without anything really bogging it down--is with danny. sure, self-recognition through the other (confused) (derogatory) (idiot kid brother) (burnt-out foils) but also let's punch each other on a rooftop and get coffee when we're done.

🥕 [CARROT] How tough is your OC against certain situations? How weak are they against others?

miriam was an assassin for most of her life. she can take a lot of things--extreme working conditions, cruelty toward herself and others, the ever-looming threat of death. granted, it's a work in progress, but she can even tolerate actual affection (holy shit), if she knows when it's coming and from whom.

however. she is so. so weak. to making people sad. it's cognitive dissonance level stuff: she can make them angry, even physically hit them. but for some reason, she just can't go through with actual emotional punishment. she can't be that kind of me. it feels uncalled for, a soft spot that no one agreed on. even when she snaps reflexively at people she feels bad. julia in particular has a very specific microexpression that will make miriam backtrack immediately (it's a numbers game: i don't think julia knows this expression exists so she can't weaponize it, but she's usually the one who provokes miriam into saying shit)
