Agreed!! You've put it very well!
I personally enjoy seeing some hermitshiping fanart with the emphasis of it being in-game characters and not actual people, but tbh I don't think I'd ever post (or make in the first place) something like this myself, even if I like the concept and chat about it in private. For this exact reason. It's very... not obvious where the line is. I have too much respect for these people to risk the tiniest chance of them coming across my profile and getting upset or confused
I'm glad you've said this <3
my point is that i don’t think its possible to have fan works of the hermits/life series members that are purely characters. yes, they’re fictional scenarios— but if ship art of jimmy looks like him/his minecraft skin, has the name jimmy, acts like jimmy, and is based off of jimmy’s videos, then the representation in ship art is irreversibly tied to irl jimmy. and yes, there are fictional aspects of the personas they play in their videos— scar is not literally a mayor when he puts on his mayor skin, but he is still scar. scar’s personality is tied to the ‘self’ in his videos. and if a cc was uncomfortable with the fan creation, they wouldn’t be made less uncomfortable if someone told them “well, it’s not actually you”
and again this is a grey area that’s highly dependent. the structure of hermitcraft is more ‘real’ than the life series which is more ‘real’ than empires, so personally i think its most sensible to always treat all of them as if they are real people with feelings and individual lives, unless of course they are explicitly playing a character
another danger of thinking of the in-video versions of the creators as characters is that it makes it easier to distance yourself from their emotions and reactions to things. those posts that are like “he’s a real man who pays taxes?!?!?!????!” always rub me the wrong way because Yes they are and you need to keep that in mind. of course this is worst-case-scenario-ing but treating the creators as characters can lead people to discount the emotions of the people behind the screens, lead them to say some really Not Okay things
anyways anon i’m glad you’re letting me give my piece on this discussion and i truly do appreciate the input. i’m just one guy, i’m not here to change minds, but i am here to give my piece and perspective

One thing I find kind of charming in an odd way about MCYT stuff is that it's often hard to tell what exactly is canon and what is, so to speak, "only" gameplay. Even with the lore-heavy things like Empires, it seems, but tbh particularly with stuff like Hermitcraft where the roleplay isn't necessarily the central focus and people jump in and out of it a lot.
Like I'm already in a lot of fandoms where what counts as canon is a bit fuzzy, for varying reasons. Anything from "the author only actually published two works for the setting in his life, everything else was published posthumously and edited by someone else, and half of it is collections of various unfinished versions that conflict with themselves" to "well there's the core tv shows and movies, but then there's also hundreds and hundreds of officially licenced secondary-canon books, many of which are basically just commercially published novel-length fanfic, and a lot of which conflicts with itself" with a pitstop at "so there's details that were scripted but never made it into the final movie/tv show/whatever, but fandom likes it and uses it as if it had been said in the movie, and also it's mentioned in the semi-official novelization of the movie, so it basically might as well be canon but also it kind of technically maybe isn't". Not to mention "early installment weirdness means this work has details that don't really make sense with later canon, but it technically still is canon"
So I'm already used to canon that's a bit pick-what-you-like or just fuzzy around the edges. I can navigate that, I can live with that. In some ways I generally quite enjoy that (although it does get a bit annoying when people try to argue a point based on something the author quickly scribbled on the back of a grocery store receipt once at 2am which was then published like fifty years after his death in a book you haven't had the time and interest to get your hands on and read, and which detail isn't referred to anywhere else in his works) because it's fun having that leeway there, and sometimes fun to try and come up with how things fit together in places where canon gets a bit wonky
But there's just something so charming about MCYT's particular style of vagueness of canon. Maybe it's because it's coming from the collaboration of lots of people, springing naturally from people having fun, and from the way that people playing on different SMPs and such can sometimes mess with the lines between them because some people may acknowledge the other series to some extent and other people may not. Also the way that friendships may carry over because the ccs are friends, but at the same time the characters might be strangers, they might even be mortal enemies, and just
idk how to phrase it, but it is so much fun, and it's even more fun watching other fans (who are more clever and better at writing than me) play with the possibilities of that

Here's some fun, non-to-lightly spoilery Rift AU thoughts for everyone!
So Ren in Rift AU is inspired by the faon interpretation [maybe closer to canon? I havent watched s7] of Mayor Scar mixed w the Red King from 3rd Life - Specifically, Ren is inspired by @mochiwrites's Scar in her Good Crimes AU [Which if you haven't read you ABSOLUTELY should]. I just love how she wrote Scar to be publicly one way and Privately another, and while I certainly don't imagine that Ren the King is quite as beloved, the inspiration is there.
Originally, Rift AU was tagged w Watcher Grian but I changed that because I want to mess with the Rift as it's own separate force and leave the Watchers for something else. I think the Watchers [And Listeners! *looks at Martyn*] function more as an ancient, ANCIENT religion, maybe even older than the ancient cities.
Also another original idea that's been put to the side for now is that the Warden was a watcher - I don't know where I was originally going with that idea, but it was my first pivot after deciding Grian wasn't going to be the watcher.
For anyone curious, and because I don't know if I'll name it directly in the stories or just leave it more ambiguous, I'm basing Scar's mobility issues and chronic pain off my own experiences with Cerebral Palsy, among other things. I have a very mild for of Cerebral Palsy that left me with a weaker right side and mobility issues and I absolutely wanted to make sure Scar was still disabled even if he isn't wheelchair bound. I imagine that he certainly has a wheelchair for bad days, but those would be like. Really bad days. The staff - to - cane that he has, made out of the same magical wood as his tree, is probably good for most of the sort of bad days.
Rift AU actually started as a way for me to explore sculk and ancient cities in fiction, which is funny given that we are now 17k in and counting with no mention of either. I have plans for it, but the story needed more work up than I was originally anticipating, which is great! I'm really enjoying returning to my roots with fanfiction, which is the whole reason I started writing Rift AU in the first place
Obviously I'm sort of picking and choosing what elements from hermitcraft [and the life series] I want to include in Rift AU but I am a little bit grumpy that I started writing it before I really fully understood the king plot [When I started, I had only watched Grian and Etho. Now I've caught up on Ren, Impulse, Mumbo, and Cleo, with plans to watch Pearl, Tango, Zedaph, and Doc next. I also really want to watch Beef and Iskall lol] because now I really wanna jam the whole royal council shenanigans in there and I'm not gonna be able to without probably retconning Scar and Ren's relationship which I refuse to do!
Obviously, Mumscarian and Treebark are in the story, and there's also going to be platonic Soup Group and platonic Team ZITS [bc. Skizz deserves to be here. I love him]. I won't tell you ALL of the pairings that end up in the story because a. I feel like we're be here all day but b. some of them are spoilers but I AM planning on having Solidaritek [Apparently team ranchers is only for platonic or something???] and ZedBeef and also Ethubs all make their own appearances. There might even be some like short stories following a few of the other couples in the story because I have attachments to Ethubs in particular. IDK if you can tell but Etho is my favorite hermit and I used to watch him all the way back in 2011 on his singleplayer world. I remember the boat dispenser. My baby girl.
One of these days I will genuinely type up an essay about my latent energy theory but in case anyone else is interested here's a very short tldr version: Redstone, Glowstone, End Rods, debatably sculk [I havent decided if it falls into the same category yet tbh], etc etc all power themselves via latent energy. That latent energy is compatible with electricity in some way, as evidenced by the fact that lightning rods can be used to power redstone machines, but it's different. More in between electricity and magic - either because it actually is or because it's not as understood by the people who work it. That same latent energy is the stuff magic feeds off, like is seen in Changing of the Season to help rejuvenate Scar. Whatever it is is old. Older than the Ancient Cities since they knew to build redstone machines to distract the Warden. It's older than the end cities, too, since end rods exist. Arguably it has always been and will always be around in some way.
Also this might not interest anyone else but thoughts on vampires and elves. Vampires are more closely related to Zombies, whereas Elves [Who are Fae, which means the Vex are included here] are more closely related to Endermen than anything [<- that will come up again] - and then the Warden and sculk are like. Very distant cousins of vampires. Sort of. Their trees connect somewhere.

I am tempted by hermitcraft but like what is it about and what should i start with? Is the season 8 grian playlist a good start? Is there another playlist that works better? I am lost help please
grian is very good to start with yeah, although tbh you can start with any of the hermits because they all approach the season differently so it's a different experience depending on who you watch. i'm a grian and goodtimeswithscar fan though so i'm obviously going to recommend their povs. and season 8 is the most recent season, and it's a lot shorter than usual due to the big 1.18 minecraft update meaning they decided to cut down the season length so they could have a new season with all the benefits of the latest additions to the game, so it's pretty easy to watch. however, hermitcraft isn't really something you need to "catch up" on since each new season stands alone (although earlier seasons may be referenced sometimes, but not enough to make it impossible to enjoy watching if you haven't seen them). season 8 is also very different to the usual stuff they do, with more lore and roleplay based stuff (which does exist in other seasons, but to a much more casual degree) as well as builds and minigames/competitions. so you can start wherever you like really. but season 8 had a lot of impact on the fanbase on here, so you're probably best off starting there if you want to get into a lot of the content. there's also 3rd life and last life, which are short semi-rp death game series that feature a lot of hermitcraft members alongside others if you ever run out of content (but trust me you won't) or just want some variety!
