Since you're a book nerd, what novels/books do you think the cast of NANA would read or associate them with?

please note of course I primarily know and have read English literature and haven't read much Japanese literature. So I'm mostly going to associate them with Western literature, though granted I think NANA's characters are more Western leaning regardless when it comes to their tastes.

but ok let's see...

Of course Hachi has herself a stack of bodice ripper romances, that's just. I just know ok. She doesn't get into reading until she's pregnant, but then she gets into reading biographies of her favorite movie stars as well as the original books that her favorite movies are based on. Of course she reads lots of Jane Austen too, and hmm I'm feeling Persuation would be her favorite.

Also My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante.

Nana of course borrow's Hachi's favorite bodice rippers after Hachi readers them. She uses them to fall asleep to but more often gets sucked up reading them and laughing her ass off. Hm, I'd associate her with The Outsiders by SE Hinton.

Also, totally Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn... lol :3c

This is slightly evil for Nobu, but Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.  But also The Outsiders by SE Hinton for him as well.

For Yasu... Maybe Blood Brothers by Willy Russel?  Twin brothers separated at birth, live different lives with one wealthy and the other poor and ends up in prison... And they fall in love with the same woman.  Seems very suiting for our Yasu. (I also considered East of Eden by John Steinbeck because the idea of seeing himself and Ren in Cain and Able parallel......... hurts)

For Shin something like Mio, My Son by Astrid Lindgren, a Swedish children’s book.  Also Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs (Our Lady of Flowers) by Jean Genet because certain people keep bring it up with Shin ;_;

Ren.... Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.  something something a boy and his rose............ something something

Gas Light by Patrick Hamilton for Takumi.  Or something like  Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë or Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier.

For Reira... Hm. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë.

I have no evidence for any of the this, but I really like the think that Miu is a horror fan.  And that her dream role is in a Japanese horror movie.  So something like The Summer of the Ubume by Natsuhiko Kyogoku is my pick for her.

Asami, obviously, only reads magazines lol. But maybe something like Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue.

For Mai... Valencia by Michelle Tea.  But tbh, Mai herself probably doesn’t read anything that isn’t Nana or Blast related.

I know for sure Hachi would buy her kids a switch to play animal crossing, but she likes it more and becomes addicted to it lol

What villager type would she love. Who are her dreamies? What kind of aesthetic would she go for regarding island design. And what kind of animal crossing player would she be?

Ok so like, let's set aside the years (since Animal Crossing New Horizons came out in 2020 and her kids would be teenagers/young adults by then) but I could see all 3 of them having a switch and their own islands and it just being. A really good way to keep them all connected, even when they are separated and in different countries 🥺😭

Her favorite personality types would probably be sisterly (remind her of Nana of course), smugs, and lazies. But she's drawn to the cute ones and other than a couple of her ultimate faves on her island, she kinda forgets to talk to them most of the time lol. Umm, of course she likes to make her island pretty. She wouldn't time travel, in part because she can't figure out how to, but she wouldn't be against like Nookizon and visiting treasure islands. It's all about the aesthetic!! Since she's a mom with kids, doing it to bond with her children she wouldn't go very far into making her island any one aesthetic or some -core. She'd just make whatever she likes!! It'd have a very vintage/retro vibe to it though.

As for villagers, I'll post them under the cut, but of course she'd like cute ones but not like,, she wouldn't necessarily like the popular ones.

She'd take Cherry because she reminds her of Nana.

Freckles she thinks is cute.

Benjamin's Japanese name is Hachi so of course she'd take him on that alone

Hachi doesn't take Judy because she's popular but because her eye's have that old, classic shojo style that Hachi uses in her own art.

These ones she may let go at a certain point but regardless she'd enjoy them!! Poncho just has that cuddly, Pooh-bear vibe. And Colton looks like a prince who is a white horse lol. Ellie has old timey cartoon that I think would appeal to Hachi, while Azalea kinda looks like she belongs in a very kitchy 60's diner but like, very aesthetic looking.

She also took Cyd once on a hunt because he was Ren Jr's dreamie.

NANA Week 2022, Day 2: Passion

For NANA Week today, I bring you my incredibly indulgent fanfic!!!

My, My Such a Sweet Thing (read on Ao3)

Girlfriends Nana and Hachi have a date together.

Based upon the volume covers of NANA.

Here is a sneak peak of the first part:

1.

The curtains to the window in Room 707 were open, but even then the early morning light was dull and shadowed.  The room was cast in muted colors as Nana sat herself at the table with a pot of coffee and the newspaper.

There was a certain silence in the apartment that Nana rarely got to enjoy to herself and she planned to do just that this morning, already dressed and ready to go.  

What time Hachi would wake up was impossible to say, as her girlfriend sometimes woke up early to get ready for the day when she had something to look forward to, but just as often slept-in - intentionally or not.  It was part of Hachi’s charm that Nana never knew what she was going to do next.

Hachi’s alarm clock broke the silence and Nana looked up from her paper to Hachi’s bedroom door and waited to see what Hachi would do.  Indeed she heard the shuffling of Hachi’s blankets and then the alarm was shut off and nothing else.  Without Hachi or anyone else to witness her, Nana smiled with affection and snickered a bit as she poured herself another cup of coffee.  Hachi would have to make another fresh pot for herself when she finally woke up.  Nana reckoned it’d be another hour at least before Hachi joined her at the table.

totally misread this as "or I won't love you anymore" and was like gonna lose my mind,, lol

anyway of course i did both

I LOOOOOVE her lolita look. And like, I especially loved how she thought she wouldn't be able to get the manager job with blonde ringlets and she slowly regained her iconic look as she found out oh yes, she's allowed to look however she wants to. Love that for this like, 17 year old girl who KNOWS her style and look so early on in her life.

Anytime the topic of Mai comes up I get an eye twitch because I have such a different understanding of her. She's creepy, she's a stalker, she's weird,, YES AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IS SO FASCINATING. How did a 17 year old land this manager job. She's so cool and mysterious. Also I am sorry the most wrong takes I've teen about her is anything that ships her with Shin. I'm sorry, come on......................................... no

I got crazy every time we get Mai lore and every time we leave with more questions than answers. Also, I think it's wasted potential to not just outright declare her as lesbian (or bi but she's lesbian coded more tbh) because I think it's the queer and outsiders of society that are so drawn to Nana and Blast as a whole. And I'd just be so fascinated to see our conservative girl Nana Osaki be confronted with... Mai's gay for real and has actual feelings for ever.

ok yes I love her but this 17 year old is so mysterious and knows everything that no one else does. Even Yasu is intimidated. I think Takumi would shit his pants if Mai ever got hold of him, she's the most powerful character of the series and I am not joking... that much lol

Every detail we learn about Mai is just like, 50 more questions I need answered. Mai bonus chapter when??

I have issues and aspire to be as mysterious about them as her..

I say her name and my friends are like "oh that stalker girl" and already my hands are around their neck and throttling for the kill. like okay... you're right she's a stalker......... but have you tried thinking about the fact she is also my lesbian lolita daughter??? @mpiggiem I am talking to you bitch............. Mai is high on the list of characters I would watch an entire spin-off about. I just need to see her so, so much more.

Look I just think the characters in NANA are all very good looking okay.

I won't say EVERYONE is wrong about them, because I do have friends I see eye to eye on completely (you darling).................. but this one was on thin ice of being dabbed

It's SAD that while Asami remains a sympathetic character... she gets closer to the usual "bitchy rival character" treatment by Yazawa than other characters. I really want to see more explored with her character, especially outside her relationship with Nobu. ESPECIALLY want more from her relationship with Shin because the few tiny nuggets we have there are gold.

You cannot tell me people's anti-sex work feelings aren't completely warping their perception of her. People will love Shin and turn around and hate Asami, but she also was a teenage runaway who ended up in sex work. She just didn't have the members of Blast to help her out in her youth.

Asami deserved so much more than just more screen time but that too. Where the hell she at in the future chapters?? I get that Yazawa doesn't want us to know if she and Nobu are still together or what, but I would be FURIOUS if she completely vanishes from the narrative.

Asami and Miu are SUCH a good duo by which I mean,, for me to watch not for them lol. Also, I still think Asami and Shin should get some duo time.

am i blatantly lying to get bingo by claiming she's done nothing wrong ever? no actually. if being sometimes mean and jealous and desperate for love is wrong then I don't want to be right. it happens!!!!!!!! deal!! with!!! it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
