In short: the biggest musical theatre in the country finally announced the Finnish production of Moulin Rouge! today, and I'm unhappy.
I'm unhappy because they're charging absolutely exorbitant prices for a theatre that gets public funding, and they didn't even have the good sense to announce the cast at the same time to distract from their overcharging.
You wouldn't think "making the Duke proud" is the vibe anyone wants associated with their production of MR!, but somehow, it seems like that's what they're going for here.

Context for international musical fans about the new Norwegian production of Book of Mormon
You might think this is just a new production at a different theatre with a new cast, but this will actually be a whole new translation of the script.
So the lyrics will be different and there will probably be new jokes.
Why would they have to make a NEW translation?
Well the reason is that Norway has two written languages: Bokmål and Norwegian Nynorsk. Bokmål is the most used written form of Norwegian, 87,3% has Bokmål as their main written language.
And the Norwegian Theatre who put up the first norwegian production of Book of Mormon in 2017 is a Nynorsk theatre. They do all their plays and musicals in Norwegian Nynorsk (or dialects). So the first Norwegian translation of BoM was into Nynorsk.
This new production (2025) will translate the script into Bokmål.
To explaine the two written forms very simplified:
Nynorsk is an amalgamation of norwegian dialects around the country made into writing,
Bokmål is based on the way people speak in Oslo, the capitol of Norway.
The funniest explanation I've read explaining why Norway has two written languages
I've tried explain Norwegian Nynorsk before, you can read it here

Advanced Clinical Practice, Clinical Case Evaluation, Adult Psychopathology and Pathway to Wellness, Contemporary Social Issues
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Rest is resistance!

“With my first record, I think I’d been a bit close-minded in the sounds that I wanted to produce. There’s a lot of interesting, dance-y elements that they brought into that record with [famed producer] Stuart Price and it just showed me that you can bring in these trendier sounds, but do them in a really authentic way.”

Dublin 1995 Wrap Up
Tumblr media
Once again Eurovision is at the Point Theatre, Dublin brought to us all by RTÉ. They've had a lot of practice and the evening all goes to plan. Any idiosyncrasies from last year have been ironed out, and the evening progresses very smoothly indeed. In fact there's little in the way of preamble beside a montage of previous Eurovision's and memorable moment to celebrate the 40th Eurovision ever.
After that it's straight down to business. The stage is the same one as last year, but the taxi-way theme is gone to be replaces by a waterfall of blue falling from the roof before gracefully arcing to meet the floor in a smooth curve. The interval act was called Lumen and it followed on from Riverdance in using traditional motifs including folk and Gregorian chants.
In a surprising break from recent editions, none of the top three entries were in English. In fact the first entries in English were the UK and Malta finishing in a tie in 10th place. A number of entries tried to follow Ireland's lead by using ballads and more particularly folk and traditional musical elements. The winning song borrowed heavily from Celtic sounds and even featured an Irish musician - it could even be thought of as Ireland's fourth in a row. Europe cannot get enough of that sound.
This narrowing of genres and variety was mirrored in the national finals. There are lots of ballads. There are also many songs that incorporate more religious and spiritual themes both in the music and in the lyrics. Overall the production values both in the presentation of the finals and in delivery of the songs is improving even as the variety (and perhaps the quality) of song-writing is diminishing. The message from 1995 is that Eurovision has a ballad problem.
There are of course some countries trying to buck the trend. Notably Croatia and the UK as mentioned previously. In terms of longevity, the ESC Radio/songfestival.be top 500 for 2023 has seven songs from 1995, which is definitely better than the year before. In my opinion there are no true stand-out songs from 1995 even if the overall level has improved. Also the depth of the national finals feels notably more shallow. I was finding it harder to fill out the top 26 with songs that I felt a connection with this year. There are no debuting countries this year for the first time in a while contributing to a feeling of increasing staleness.
Maybe 1996 will change that? Time to leave Ireland and head to Oslo!

The Passion of Joan of Arc
(1928, Denmark-France, silent, directed by Carl Dreyer)
Carl Dreyer's legendary picture about the martyr Joan of Arc has been cloaked in mystery from the day its production began. French nationalists were concerned that such a controversial project was being carried out on French soil by avant garde (read: non-Catholic) artists. Predictably, censors severely edited the film for its French premiere. Meanwhile, Dreyer's original version was destroyed in a fire. After the director composed an identical second print from remaining elements, a second fire destroyed that print. As the notes in the Criterion DVD version of the film point out, Dreyer's film endured the same fate as Joan herself: judges, scissors, and fire.
Over decades, badly altered and "musically enhanced" versions could be seen in theaters, and Dreyer is said to have been devastated by the sorry state of affairs. He died believing that his greatest work had been lost forever. However, in 1981, someone discovered in an office closet several canisters of film, one of which contained an original print . The office was located in a mental institution in Oslo, Norway.
For almost half a century, the only audiences enjoying an authentic version of this marvelous film were comprised of the mentally ill and their caretakers. Yet there's an uncanny consistency in that fact. Renee Falconetti, the actress who portrays Joan, is said to have never worked in motion pictures again because she was so emotionally spent by the experience (she did suffer some emotional breakdowns during and after production).
Another key player, Antonin Artaud, the Dada-Surrealist wild child, opium fiend, and Theatre of the Absurd founder, was eventually institutionalized (after a short and notorious career) because he was tormented by "voices." All of the bizarre circumstances of the film's history notwithstanding, Dreyer's work remains a landmark example of cinema as art.
Regarding its impact—primarily through a highly stylized conveyance of a real event—Jean Cocteau commented, "It seems like an historical document from an era in which the cinema didn't exist."
Dreyer's achievement is remarkable considering that he abandoned every common cinematic technique that might convey anything approaching reality. Art director Hermann Warm (The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari) found inspiration in the primitive art of illuminated manuscripts, in which perspective is entirely ignored. The result is an Expressionist take on medieval art (a successful convergence of Surrealism and medieval minimalism, one could argue) manifested in one of the most peculiar sets in film history. In this realm, physical structures, light, and angles do not observe geometry, and it is not possible to perceive their scale in relation to the actors.
The "geometry" and rhythm commonly associated with motion pictures are also absent from Dreyer's work. Spatial relationships between actors are seldom consistent, if they can be determined at all. There are no establishing shots as such, and cuts from one player to another do not always match dialogue or action. Most of the shots are close-ups of faces—but what amazing faces they are. Gifted veterans from the French stage are captured in carefully sustained, intricately detailed shots, and the result is unforgettable. Except for a few brief glimpses, almost none of the set is visible.
Dreyer's production notes indicate that he merely wished to employ a set that could immerse his actors in a milieu that might emotionally transport them to the historical setting. That speaks to Dreyer's confidence considering that he was working with gifted set designers at the peak of their talents. Notes also suggest that the disorienting visual style works at "unmooring from the present" the imaginations of viewers.
This method provides a stunning emotional immediacy appropriate to a historical subject. The resulting series of images is also beautiful (that's hardly surprising with cinematographer Rudolph Maté at the helm), and at some point it is uncertain if the film seems like a work of art because we are so disoriented, or if encountering such a deeply satisfying image disorients us. Add to this Renee Falconetti's performance, which utterly defies comparison, and you have a rare motion picture experience.

"Peer Gynt" in Giza (2006) - Bentein Baardson
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Films I've watched in 2022 (165/210)
This giant production, with a stage spanning almost 100m x 30m and with the Sfinx and the pyramids as its backdrop was a collaboration between Egypt and Norway during the "Ibsen Year", the 100 year anniversary of Ibsen's death, in 2006.
This is a great feat of a production which really allows the vital character of The Bøyg/The Sfinx (and, yes, it is actually the Sfinx in Ibsen's original play) to appear in all its rightful majesty.
The scene where Peer meets the Bøyg/the Sfinx is one of the pivotal scenes in the play, a real turning point for Peer, and here you get the full effect of what it would've actually been like.
The Cairo Symphony Orchestra - conducted by Christian Eggen - and Cairo Opera Accapella Chorus, as well as soloists from the Norwegian Opera gave life to Edvard Grieg's music, while the cast was an ensemble of Norwegian actors and dancers, and the Egyptian actor Mohamed Wafik Aly Helmy giving voice to the Bøyg/the Sfinx.
The lead actors are a solid group of Norwegian stage actors:
Bjarte Hjelmeland (Peer): Hjelmeland's career has spanned both drama, comedy and musicals as well as including a stint as director of The National Scene in Bergen.
Lise Fjeldstad (Åse): Fjeldstad has had a long and varied career which includes many Ibsen roles, such as Nora ("A Doll's House"), Asta Allmers ("Little Eyolf"), Maja Rubek ("When We Dead Awaken") as well as having toured the world as Åse in "Peer Gynt" with The Norwegian Opera.
Erik Hivju (The Mountain King): Hivju's enjoyed a long career both on stage, in films, and for a period as a member of the regular company of the Norwegian television theatre. He previously played the Mountain King in Baardson's television production of "Peer Gynt" (1993).
Per Frisch (Begriffenfeldt): Frisch has been attatched to The National Theatre in Oslo for decades as well as having played in several big Norwegian films, and was, for a few years, a member of the regular company of the Norwegian television theatre.
Paul-Ottar Haga (The Button Moulder): Haga played the lead role of Peer in Baardson's 1993 television production of "Peer Gynt" for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. He's had a long and varied career in both drama, comedy, musicals, films and television.
Speaking of Paul-Ottar Haga as the Button Moulder, this production has him as an ever present figure on the stage, standing in the background, observing Peer as he goes through life. He almost feels like a shadow of Peer, and having an actor who really understands the character - having played Peer himself - in that role, lends the performance extra weight.
I first saw this production when it was televised during the "Ibsen Year" and really loved it. I was incredibly fortunate to come across a second hand DVD of it yesterday and was thrilled to finally see it again. It was every bit as good and interesting as I'd remebered it being.

Norwegian Slow TV Will Make Your Sunday A Whole Lot Better.
Watching a 7-hour train journey is the therapy we didn’t know we needed.
In 2009 the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) televised the first Slow TV show called Bergen - Oslo minutt for minutt: It was a real time film of the entire journey by rail from Norways city of Bergen to Norways capital. The journey, lasting almost seven and a half hours (!), was filmed by cameras on the outside of the train, and is interspersed with interviews, archive footage and music.
After the success of the documentary (rated a solid 7.6 on IMDb), the station aired further train routes, a coastal boat voyage, the opening day of fishing season on the Gaula River, and a 12-hour-long broadcast on firewood which received 1 million viewers and international attention.
Why is this a thing?
Corcha McCroy, Managing Editor at the Scandinavia Standard, explains:
“In a world where mindfulness is often touted as the answer to increasing anxiety, Slow TV works to provide a mindful space without rejecting technological advancements. In fact, it welcomes them, as the subject matters benefit from the high definition they are filmed in. It is void of nostalgia or a yearning for simpler times. Instead, it offers a tool for navigating a future it can seem we are hurtling towards while providing a space to indulge in reflection and meditation. In short, it provides escapism by grounding the viewer in the immediate present.”
New Yorker staff writer Nathan Heller adds:
“Slow TV seems slow in part because, unlike our standard experience of the world, it’s unshaped by interior consciousness. Instead of drowning out its viewers’ inner lives, it seems to want to be a backdrop that can give rise to their own reflections. A slow-TV program is like a great view you encounter on vacation: it’s always there, impervious, but it gains meaning and a story depending on what it conjures in your head.”
“[…] a mindful space without rejecting technological advancements” that “provides escapism” and is like “[…] a great view you encounter on vacation”? Oh, we are so here for it!
If The Club had a Soho House-like private theatre there would be Norwegian Slow TV screenings every Sunday. Because let’s be honest, that is the stuff we need more from on a Sunday: Beautiful landscapes, soothing sounds, continuous movements and pure nature - all within the peace and comfort of your living room.
If this is not a good way to fight your next Sunday Blues, I don’t know what is. So invite some friends over, prepare way too much soul food (see below) and collectively zone out on the couch while a Norwegian train takes you through untouched nature.
For seven hours straight.
Ready for your first Slow TV experience? We have something for you: Why not try the original 7-hour-long train journey from Bergen to Oslo? Or, if train rides aren’t for you, there is also this 6-hour-long film of sheep grazing outside Napa, California, which is almost better than hypnosis. Need a bit more action? Go for the 10-hour-long session of fireworks. This should do the trick.

Tinariwen - “Anemouhagh”
Tumblr media
Tinariwen, the legendary, Grammy-winning Tuareg collective will release their new album, Amatssou, on May 19th, 2023.
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Later this month, Tinariwen will embark on their first US tour since 2019, beginning on May 27th at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music and including stops in Los Angeles, New York and more. A list of full dates are below and tickets are on sale now. For decades, Tinariwen have remained ambassadors for the Tuareg people, a way of life in tune with the natural world, which is under threat as never before. Throughout Amatssou — the legendary collective’s ninth studio album — Tinariwen set out to explore the shared sensibilities between their trademark desert blues and the vibrant country music of rural America. Recorded in Djanet, an oasis in the desert of southern Algeria located in Tassili N’Ajjer National Park, with additional production on two tracks by Daniel Lanois (Brian Eno, U2, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Peter Gabriel, Willie Nelson), Amatssou finds Tinariwen’s signature snaking guitar lines and hypnotic grooves seamlessly co-existing alongside banjos, fiddles and pedal steel. Though Tuareg culture is as old as that of ancient Greece or Rome, the songs of Amatssou speak to the current and often tough reality of Tuareg life today. Unsurprisingly, there are impassioned references to Mali’s ongoing political and social turmoil. Full of poetic allegory, the lyrics call for unity and freedom. There are songs of struggle and resistance with oblique references to the recent desperate political upheavals in Mali and the increasing power of the Salafists. Tinariwen’s message has never sounded more urgent and compelling than it does on Amatssou.
