Hunters don’t die from old age or natural causes.

They die from wounds, during a hunt gone wrong, self-sacrifice, or a bar brawl turned nasty.

They definitely don’t die from cancer, and they definitely don’t die at twenty-seven.

So, when you had a bruise that just refused to heal, you didn’t think anything of it, but Sammy insisted that you go to the doctors.

You took your fake ID and your fake insurance cards and sat in the waiting room, your small, clammy hand in Sam’s sure, large one.

Your leg bounced nervously. You hated the doctors. You hated hospitals. You hated feeling trapped.

“YN,” Sam chided gently.

Your leg’s movement ceased.

“It’ll be okay,” Dean encouraged.

You shot a glare to the elder Winchester brother.

“Jordan?” A nurse called.

Sam and Dean stood before you realized you were Jordan.

The nurse smiled at you and your boys as you went through the door that separated the waiting room and the exam rooms.

She made you get on the scale, she made you stand against the wall to get your height— you were short and the brothers never let you forget it. She sat you down on the exam table before she took your vitals.

The nurse asked standard questions and you answered. Dean blushed when she asked if you could be pregnant. You snorted.

The nurse left and the doctor came. “Jordan?” She asked and you nodded. “I’m Dr. Lexi Grey.”

They took vials and vials of blood— Sam held your hand and kept your eyes focused on him and not the needles.

They took X-Rays and MRIs and every other scan in the book.

It took almost three weeks to get the results back.

Cancer.

You laughed at the irony of a perfectly healthy twenty-seven year old getting cancer. Stage four cancer.

“Six good months if we don’t do chemo or maybe eighteen if we do chemo,” Dr. Grey said.

“We can do chemo—” Sam had started.

“You’re still young—” Dean had said.

You shut them down. You weren’t going to fight it. Your grandfather had died from cancer and you didn’t recognize the man in the coffin by the end of the ordeal.

“Not happenin, boys,” you said.

Not long after your diagnosis, you began feeling the effects. You were tired, all the time. You didn’t have an appetite most of the time. You lost weight.

But you were still happy.

Sam and Dean unconsciously took on less and less, spending more time with you.

You traveled just to travel.

The first place you went? The World’s Largest Ball of Twine.

It was a three hour drive from the bunker and you bounced with anticipation the whole way there.

“This is what you wanted to see?” Dean asked, hands on hips, watching Sammy very carefully take a picture of you.

You stood in front of the ball, arms outstretched and a goofy smile on your face.

You humored Sam, too. He wanted to visit the historical town of Lindsborg, so the three of you drove there, all singing along to classic rock the whole time.

But your favorite place that you visited? That was the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City.

Dean dressed up like a cowboy and participated in a fake shoot-out.

He bought you a hat that said “World’s Cutest Cowgirl” and you proudly wore it.

You had hundreds of pictures from these trips and you insisted on making a scrapbook.

Dean complained on the outside, but you knew he’d do anything to make you happy.

Sammy was awfully adept at decoupage.

“When I die, I’ll turn into a rainbow. That way you’ll know I’m in heaven,” you said one night during dinner. “That way you’ll know I’m safe.” You nodded in affirmation at your statement.

The cancer was spreading. You could feel it in your soul.

So you made your boys— Cas included— eat one big meal with you once a week.

Dean tried to lighten the mood. “Who says you’re going to heaven?”

“I did,” Cas deadpanned, glaring at Dean as if it were stupid to think anything else would happen to your soul.

That made Sam laugh and you smile.

It made Dean glare.

“I don’t want you to die,” Dean said after he’d snuck into your bedroom way past what could be considered a decent hour.

He had been crying and his cheeks were still wet.

You didn’t say anything. You just held your arms out.

He accepted your embrace and you cried and together.

“I love you, sweetheart. Always have. Was too stupid and too scared to say anything. But now—”

You cut him off with a kiss. “Now we have to face the music.”

Dean spent every night with you after that.

“I want a hunter’s funeral, obviously,” you said.

Sam and Dean had fought this— they didn’t want to plan your funeral.

“But I want my ashes spread at sea. And you have to sing to me!” Tears sprung from your eyes.

“Of course,” Sammy said.

“What song?” Dean asked.

“‘Hey Jude’, please,” you whispered, voice thick with emotion. “At dawn.”

“Put on your fed suits.” You were rambling now. “Throw my pearls into the ocean.”

“What happens when I die?” You asked Cas.

“Your soul will separate from your body. I expect that Tessa will be your reaper,” Castiel explained in his gravelly voice. “Tessa will take you to the threshold and I will greet you there. I will take you to heaven.”

“What’s heaven like?”

“It’s different for everyone. For Ash, it’s the roadhouse. For Bobby, it’s watching the boys grow up before they were truly hunters. It’s your best memories, over and over.”

“Oh.”

Your mother visited you in your dreams. “I’ll collect you in sixty days’ time.”

“Dean,” you said the next night after passionate love making.

“Yeah, Princess?”

“I wanna get married. Next week.”

Dean threw his head back in laughter. “Of course.”

“And I wanna drive Baby.”

Dean laughed again. “Okay.”

The wedding was small and haphazard and perfect. Sammy was the best man and Castiel was the maid of honor, much to his chagrin.

You bought a short, white dress from a second hand store and the boys wore their Fed suits.

You bought a cheap bouquet from the nearest florist and went barefoot. You had your grandmother’s pearls around your neck.

Castiel was kind enough to transport you to a private beach for the ceremony.

Dean cried, just a little.

You could feel the beginning of the end two weeks before your mother said she’d be there.

“This is it,” you told your boys at the weekly meal.

Everyone cried, including Cas.

You spent your last week in a special hospital bed— you were in pain and needed an IV for the pain meds. Dean helped you go to the bathroom as much as he could.

Your eyes were heavy and you couldn’t fight it.

“I love you, Dean, Sammy. So much.”

Sammy kissed your forehead and Dean kissed your lips.

You fell into slumber and neither of your boys left you until your body was cold.

When you opened your eyes, you were separated from your body. You watched the scene before you.

Dean carefully laid your body on the pyre— the one that you and he had constructed. Therapy you called it.

Sammy lit a match and tossed it.

They watched until the flames burned out and Dean fell asleep outside.

Tessa didn’t say a word— she just touched your arm and you followed her into the light.

As promised, Castiel was there. You threw your arms around him and hugged him fiercely.

He returned the affection.

When you entered heaven, you didn’t know what to expect.

You were wearing your wedding dress and you could feel your wedding band on your left hand.

You heard a voice you thought you’d never hear again.

“YN!” Bobby boomed.

“Bobby?” You cried.

You ran to him and threw your arms around him. Tears fell freely from your eyes and sobs fell freely from your lips.

“I know, YN. But they’ll be here before you know it.”

Bobby held you until the tears subsided.

“I’ll visit you often,” Castiel promised as he turned.

You jogged to catch up with him. It was easy because you didn’t need to breathe now.

“Cas, how do I make a rainbow? I promised Sam and— and Dean I’d let them know I was safe.”

Cas nodded for you to follow him. He walked until there was a clearing in the cloud and it felt like you were dropping, but Cas was flying your soul down to earth.

Dean and Sam were collecting your cremains from the pyre and Dean was clutching your pearls.

“I’ll open the clouds,” Cas started, “and you’ll use the purity of your soul to refract the light from the sun. Focus on Dean.”

The clouds separated and you closed your eyes. You could feel the sun moving through you. When you opened your eyes, there was a rainbow that shined on your boys. No, you shined on your boys. You were the rainbow.

Dean fell to his knees and cried. “Thank you, sweetheart,” he choked out.

You visited Sam and Dean when they drove to the ocean. They found a secluded cliff to spread your ashes.

Castiel made sure the wind blew toward the ocean.

He landed next to Dean.

Dean turned and pulled Cas into a hug.

“Thank you for being here.”

“YN is here, too,” Cas said, pointing to where your soul was.

Dean turned and you focused on making yourself into a rainbow again.

Sam chuckled. “Hey, YN. Miss you.”

Dean walked closer to your rainbow and reached out to touch it—you.

When his fingers touched your colors, you gasped. You could feel his fingers.

The rainbow was solid—no, you were solid. Dean laughed when his fingers didn’t move through the light.

“Miss you, sweetheart.”

He placed a kiss at where he thought your forehead should be and turned.

He opened the bag of your cremains and began singing.

“Hey Jude, don't make it bad

Take a sad song and make it better

Remember to let her into your heart

Then you can start to make it better.”

Sammy and Cas joined.

“Hey Jude, don't be afraid

You were made to go out and get her

The minute you let her under your skin

Then you begin to make it better.”

Dean turned the bag and your ashes spread in the wind. Tears rolled down his face.

Sammy grabbed his shoulder and he cried, too.

“Hey Jude, don't let me down

She has found you, now go and get her

When Dean died, Castiel came to you immediately. “I had to pull some strings— I owe Naomi— but Dean will be here soon.”

You ran to the gates and waited impatiently.

Tessa could barely keep up with Dean because of how fast he was running.

“Y/N!” He called when he saw you.

You ran to him and he picked you up in a tight hug. He squeezed you hard before he began kissing you.

It had been five years, and damn, did you miss those lips.

“Hey Cas? Can you get pregnant in heaven?” You asked. You couldn’t explain it, but you felt pregnant.

“Y/N, you were pregnant when you died. Now that your soulmate is here, the baby will grow and age until they are eighteen, then stop growing.”

Dean almost shit himself.

When Sammy died eight months later, Dean had felt it. He waited by the gates, holding you in a casual embrace.

Sammy pulled you into a bearhug and wrestled Dean to the ground.

“Momma?” A small voice called.

Sam’s eyes snapped up— Bobby—Bobby Singer— was holding a child that looked exactly like Dean.

“I was pregnant when I died,” you explained.

Sam shook his head and pulled Bobby into an amended bear hug.

“Who’s this?” He asked as he took the child from his stand in dad.

“I’m Mary!” The little girl exclaimed. “And you’re my uncle Sammy!” The girl wrapped her arms around Sam’s neck.

Yep, he was a goner.

Dean had died a hunter— scarified himself for Sammy. Sammy had died a hunter— hunt turned nasty. So it didn’t matter that you died a civvy way, as Dean joked.

But who cared?

You had your boys and your best girls and that’s all you needed in your forever.

You can't put a price on life

To Whom It May Concern:

Hello, this is my story about why we need our Diabetes Clinic here in this town.

Regarding medicines and all the talk about different drugs, remedies and such, these are my thoughts and my experience.

My experience also drives my personal belief in the value of our Diabetes Clinic nurse.

You can decide for yourself what to believe but this is my own experience regarding medications and the medical personnel who guide you.

Last no of years I have been a diabetic and was started on the usual meds.

After a period one of those meds my body no longer tolerated. It was bad, like a full blown IBS.

I was taken off that med, but only to start using a needle version of the same drug essentially.

My symptoms were even worse. Even when I stopped those meds, my IBS symptoms were still there.

I read about a probiotic supplement and that helped for a time but the symptoms came back full blown. It was to the point where I had to leave work – my situation was unmanageable. I would go back again the next day, but it happened again and again. More sick days than work days. Unacceptable.

After talking with a friend I tried another version Acidophilus bifodus with a cranberry pill. In time the symptoms were gone and my digestive issues with it.

That was years ago. My issues are gone. I don't even need a stomach pill anymore. I took a special stomach medication but found my stomach issues suddenly were gone. Cured. See, that product addressed the cause, rather than the symptom.

That's the problem with most meds, they treat the symptom rather than the cause.

Trust in what you know. Alternative medicine sometimes can work. I am living proof of that.

Incidentally that first drug, it has recently been determined that it is known to cause cancer because of some ingredients in some batches as I understand.

Now in recent days, I find myself unemployed and on another insurance program.

Two of my main meds, that program is refusing to cover the costs, even though I experienced no side effects with these medications.

They seem to work, yet over costs even with the Dr special requests, they refuse to cover the costs.

Because of such decisions my Dr wants to change my meds that might eventually include another version of the very drug that at the time destroyed my digestive system.

I spoke with my pharmacist, saying, I had full blown IBS – I can’t take that medication.

Yet that program would like me to prove that I still can’t take any form of that medication. They would turn us into guinea pigs as it were.

The same health department managing this program is possibly discontinuing the Diabetes Clinic in this town in an effort to cut costs and trim budgets.

Unacceptable.

This person is invaluable to diabetes patients. This community needs this person. When a person is this necessary to a person’s health and quality of life, no cost is too high.

I can only imagine this person’s value in helping this department see that sometimes a medication is appropriate for one person while not another.

That well of knowledge and experience from that Diabetes nurse is priceless and should continue in this community.

A long trek to another city for a similar service is both inconvenient and impossible for many diabetics, particularly seniors who don’t drive.

You can’t put a price on human life. You simply can’t.

We need this person in this community, now more than ever.

so i finally have a psychiatrist! this is great and good, im on new meds and feeling better. this also means this is the first time in my life ive had access to getting an adhd diagnosis and this is where it starts going downhill djsgdkfhs.m........ so i should have taken this test before but i had to reschedule to yesterday, and insurance doesn't cover it so i dropped hundo fidde or ~75% of my paycheck on the test to see if i got cool guy syndrome and if i can get new meds for it. its fine and im ok with being broke ass hell bc like.... im used to have no money and also rx is cheap on my insurance so like ok ok ok ok ok ...... dr didn't date the rx so the lady at the pharma refused to fill it and by then its too late to run back and get it fixed. i go back today get it dated and submit my rx to the pharma, are we good now please. nope!!!!!!! not 100% on where this goes wrong but my insurance isnt covering this because they needed pre-approval? so apparently this will take 3 business days or i can just pay 60 dawllas for it off of insurance but i just spent all my money on that damn test!!!!! so i cant afford my new meds until maybe monday if insurance goes thru or if not maybe tues or weds 😭

I gotta put this somewhere so. Here we go.

SO! My roommate was dating me for a long time. Almost four years to be exact. I broke up with him about two weeks before our four year anniversary, which was yesterday. And I’m gonna talk about why.

He’s disabled, and so am I, both mentally and physically. I fully believe that, to some extent, our relationship just didn’t work because of how our illnesses mixed. He’s schizophrenic, and I have borderline personality disorder. You put those two together and it’s like. The sloppiest bar fight you’ve ever seen. And I will totally recognize that I reeeeeally need therapy, because a lot of the shit that happened was contributed to by me, if not started by me.

But I refuse to say it’s 100% my fault. Because it’s not.

He was always telling me that I needed therapy, better coping mechanisms, friends, etc. All very true! But he stopped going to therapy before I did, which I ended up HAVING to do bc I quit my job that provided the therapy to begin with. He just. Stopped going. And claimed that he didn’t need it at the time because “he was doing fine”. There was literally no reason for him to stop going. Without therapy, he’s become distant, irritable, and generally unpleasant to be around. But I can’t tell him that, he’s sick! How dare I want him to be responsible for his fucking actions.

He regularly calls me stupid. It’s in a joking manner, but god I hate it, and I’ve told him over and over and over again NOT TO CALL ME STUPID. I’ve been rediagnosed with ADHD, and it’s likely I’ll be diagnosed with autism in the near future, as it runs in the family and I show a lot of symptoms. As you can imagine, I’ve been called stupid for a long goddamn time for being neurodivergent. I’m kinda fucking sick of it.

He’s gaslit me, claiming that I’ve said things that literally never came out of my mouth. When I try to debate that, he says he’s schizophrenic and has reality issues, so I’m not allowed to tell him that he’s remembering something incorrectly. Most of the time this has to do with me wanting to spend time with him. He claims that he offers to do things all the time, and that I always turn him down. That’s just a bold faced lie. Every now and again he would offer a movie that I had no interest in, and I’ve NEVER been able to pick the movie. Whenever I’d try, he’d decline, and make me watch something I wasn’t interested in anyways.

He’s fucking MESSY. Our apartment has never ever been clean longer than a week or two. When we (and by we I mean mostly me) would clean, he would complain about his chronic pain, and sit down leaving me to do everything else. Conveniently, this chronic pain showed up after he started his first job back in 2018/2019. He uses my things with permission, but never takes care of them. As I speak, there are paint brushes that I purchased with my own money that I let him borrow just sitting in dirty paint water on our kitchen table. They’ve been there for over a week. Funnily enough, now that his girlfriend is coming to visit (who he’s been dating less than a year), he’s all hopped up and ready to clean the entire apartment just for her. He’s also planning on marrying her. After turning down my proposal 2 years ago claiming that he wasn’t sure he wanted to get married in general.

Back to his chronic pain, he uses it as an excuse to get out of everything he possibly can. I understand that it’s bad. I understand that he can’t help it. But for fucks sake, he was supposed to get an MRI done to check it out and instead, he contacted the dr for pain meds and hasn’t called to check and see if our insurance has covered the MRI yet. He was supposed to get it done over a month ago. I’m not saying he doesn’t have the pain, I’m saying he needs to do something about it besides bitch and moan.

He dumped me once before. In a series of unfortunate events, we ended up staying with a friend of his in Michigan at the beginning of 2020, right as covid hit. We lived in her basement, and everything was fine for about a month. I then was told that I specifically was being kicked out, and that they didn’t care where I went, but I couldn’t stay there. I had less than a week’s notice. He did nothing to defend me. He agreed with her and was asleep the day I left, so I never said goodbye. Cue me living with my parents again for a few months when I noticed charges to my debit card that I didn’t approve, and I knew immediately who was responsible. After contacting him about it, he gave me this whole sob story that he never wanted me to leave, that hestill loved me and that his friend had manipulated him. I almost believed him until he revealed that she was now abusing him, and he just so happened to need a place to go. I dropped everything and spent thousands of dollars to rescue him, and spent two weeks living in an Airbnb until we got an apartment. We got back together. I wish we hadn’t.

And now we’re here. After all that, he just stopped being affectionate. Cut me off sexually despite still being sexual with his girlfriend (I agreed to an open relationship like an idiot), never wanted to talk about my interests, didn’t do any of our old pastimes anymore like role playing or making oc’s together, and didn’t want to be affectionate unless he needed it. No matter how much I needed to hear him say he loved me, and that he wouldn’t leave again, and that he was fucking sorry for breaking my heart. I was tired of watering a dead flower. I gave the fuck up.

He tries to act like nothing’s changed. Still says “I love you”, hugs me, does little things here and there. He’s more affectionate now than when we were fucking boyfriends. But I don’t care anymore. I don’t. I can’t. It hurts too much. I’m tired. I told him I’m moving upstate in a few months and I’m going alone. He responded with “okay, my gf’s mom said I can live with them if our relationship is serious enough, so I’m gonna propose to her :)”. God I hope that girl doesn’t get fucked over like I did. Literally wants to marry her just because he refuses to support himself. I don’t like her either, (that’s a whole other story), but I wouldn’t wish what this asshole has done to me on my worst enemy. I’m still being nice and playing my game, but the second I move out, I’m dumping all of my feelings about the past four years I wasted right in his lap, and blocking him on everything I can think of. I don’t wanna think about him ever again.

I hope he misses me. And I hope by the time he realizes how bad he fucked me up, it’ll be too late.

Weight Loss for Fertility

So there it was. I was over the BMI limit for RMANJ by nearly 10 points. Which is... A LOT. Doing the calculations, that meant I needed to lose 65lbs before we could ANY fertility treatments. That initial appointment was on 2/13/20. We walked out of that office completely destroyed. We had both taken the day off of work so we stopped to get lunch and I remember saying, “okay, enough is enough.” I started immediately just cutting back on everything. 

My dr recommended me to a nutritionist. So I went to see her and she recommended I start by cutting down drastically on carbs and sugars. No duh. I could’ve told her this was my downfall. So she suggested 30g of carbs per meal and 15g of carbs per snack. I tracked as best I could but didn’t get too crazy. 

The weight started falling off slowly at first. I got discouraged. Easily. And then it fell off a little more quickly. I started noticing a trend after a few months. The week I ovulated, I was up something stupid like 4-5lbs. But then the following week, I’d be down like...7. So after a couple months I stopped beating myself up if i was up the week of ovulation. That helped a lot. 

I keep saying infertility is a rollercoaster and this weight loss journey has been nothing short of that. 

Through this time, my nurse had me come in a few times for a BMI check. It was kind of infuriating because a different nurse would do my height and weight each time. Some with my shoes on, some with my shoes off. 

Now, I don’t know if you know how BMI works but if you change my damn height, the damn goal weight changes too. So sure enough, that’s what happened. I couldn’t keep track of anything and was so annoyed. 

Just before Thanksgiving 2020, I was nearing that 65lb goal. I alerted my nurse. I was on the cusp and I knew it. But she encouraged me to come into the office for a BMI check. Sure enough, a different nurse made me take my shoes off. Thus making me shorter. I missed the BMI clearance by .3 of a BMI point that day. I was disgusted. and livid. and pissed. and depressed. and and and all the feelings. 

I decided to give it another month and check before my next period. So on 12/15 I went but this time my nurse guaranteed that she would be the one checking me. And sure enough, I came in at 43.6 BMI, crushing the 45 BMI goal. 

Now, let me be the first to say that I know I’m nowhere close to being done losing weight. I know I have way more to go. But getting here was huge for me. 

Of equal importance, Andrew was doing Weight Watchers during this time. It was so great doing this together and having that support. It was actually nice that we were each doing our own diets but working toward the same goal. I couldn’t shame him for something that I knew was XX points or whatever and he couldn’t do the same about carbs. It worked. 

He lost about 55lbs in that same timeframe. And guess what? Sperm started showing up. Not a ton, but enough for IVF they said. Which was great news because we had started having conversations about donor sperm and/or MicroTESE (sperm extraction surgery on his testicles which is NOT covered by our insurance, etc.). There’s no way to know if it was the meds he was on or the weight loss, or some combo of the two, but things were finally clicking.

I know there are a lot of people who refuse to lose weight for infertility reasons. Saying we shouldn’t be shamed into it, etc. I don’t necessarily disagree. But I’d be kidding myself if I tried to say I was at my healthiest, pre weight loss. We both knew we wanted to lose weight if we are lucky enough to become parents. So we tried to look at this as a win/win in that way. 

Also, just let it be known that, in my opinion, BMI is the dumbest shit ever. It doesn’t account for muscle vs. fat. I’m not saying I’m the most muscular person ever but I am certainly not the fattest. To the point that on the day of our initial appt, our nurse saw my weight written down and said - this isn’t what you weigh - no way! I said, I wish it wasn’t but it is. and she asked if she could reweigh me. 

Anyway, it’s time to do away with BMI. it’s an ancient method that, quite frankly, I hate.

My Mental Health Story

When I finally accepted my diagnosis of bipolar II, it sounds cheesy, but my whole life made sense. Me as a little girl isolating, being paranoid, getting fixated on things, moods changing quick, the self harm. The self harm... first it was digging my long fingernails into the back of my hands till it bled, banging my head against the wall, pulling out my hair. Later as i grew up, the self harm turned into punching large bruises into my legs, raking my nails down my forehead, and eventually cutting my wrists. It was punishment. Punishment for being me.

I was picked on all through school- too fat, too skinny, fake boobs, etc. None of which was true. I was right in my BMI and there was nothing in my bras but my boobs. I got made fun of for having freckles and moles and I even got picked on for needing a rolling backpack when I broke my clavicle and was unable to lift heavy things.

I started college and started dating my now husband. I’d had a few huge panic attacks here and there, but never really knew what they were. He knew something was wrong with me, but didn’t quite know what. He had a suspicion on bipolar and after working with a bipolar person, so did my dad.

I’d been working at a well known lingerie store for 7 years when my boyfriend and I got married, had a kid, and bought a house with my brother. Having a baby was hard especially not knowing she was lactose intolerant so my moods were everywhere. We fixed up the house for a year and finally moved in in late 2013. I’d been getting mentally abused at that store the whole time- getting passed up for promotions, blamed for things getting stolen, yelled at, etc. It was time for a new job and more money. My brother was out a job for a while, so we needed to pay for the house somehow. I got a job at a well known insurance company. I didn’t know it, but I’d been having panic attacks all through 6 months of training. It felt like I was being crushed and I couldn’t breathe and I’d been throwing up every morning while getting ready. At the age of 4, my daughter even came in to comfort me while I was nauseous and said I’d be ok and just needed food and brought me a bucket to throw up in. Being on the phones was the worst for me. I did get my promotion and moved out of training though. I was there almost a whole year and almost to my next promotion and I had the biggest panic attack I’d ever had. It was the start of my shift and I couldn’t get on the phone. All those mornings of throwing up in the shower getting ready for this job blew up into this huge 2 hour long panic attack. My friend had to talk to managers over the phone after trying to calm me down, I had to talk to the nurse, my brother and husband had to come pick up me and my car. That was the last day in the office for me. HR was horrible. The lady I got didn’t care about mental heath and constantly needed dr notes. I eventually had to quit. A lot of people quit that job because of the stress.

I had been going to the dr while at the insurance job trying to find out why I was throwing up every morning and why I couldn’t breathe. I got checked for gall stone, ulcers, crohns, everything. Ultra sounds, endoscopy, colonoscopy, etc. My dr finally told me it was mental. I refused to believe it, but I went up a floor to psych anyway. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I was put on so many different combinations and saw so many different doctors and none were working. After I quit, I of course lost health insurance and had to go through the state. Again many different pills, but less often as the dr wanted to slowly try combos. My husband somewhere in there lost his job, my brother got one, and then my husband found one making road signs. I got insurance again.

My friends mom got me a job filing paperwork at a well known car dealership. I did well filing, but I started having to greet customers in service and move cars into the smallest of parking spots. I started fixating on things, arguing with my boss, and getting lonely in the back room. I even tried to open a vein in my wrist in the bathroom at work with a wire hanger. I got really depressed in the back and the anxiety while moving cars was great. I crashed 1,2,3 cars and I was out. I was put on a 3 day suspension (which afterward turned into being fired). That day I went home and took over a full bottle of prescribed medication. I wanted to sleep. I didn’t want to exist. Just sleep forever. I was tired. Tired of my brain and stress and not knowing how to fix what i was going through. Just so tired. I text my husband to pick up our daughter from school and said goodbye. He called 911 and they came in and walked me downstairs, strapped me to the bed in the ambulance and took me to the nearest hospital in late September 2017.

They didn’t have to pump my stomach, but I did end up having a seizure. My husband, mom, and dad all came to see me and my aunt and uncle watched my daughter after school. I got put on a 5150 which is a 3 day hold in the psych ward of the hospital. I begged to be let out for the first two days. I was diagnosed bipolar II and placed on a handful of medication to take while there. I eventually gave in and participated so I could go home. The meds they gave me made me hungrier. I got out in 3 days time and still had to take those meds. and 3 months later on those meds I was 60 lbs heavier. I looked and looked for someone to help me lose the weight. Eventually I found a psych at the health insurance place that changed my medication, but after a little, they weren’t cutting it. I’ve changed meds and doses a bit. I kept asking my psych and my regular dr and my therapist for a way to help me lose weight. Nothing. I got into a bipolar group after taking IOP. A handful of them had to get surgery to lose the weight they gained on bipolar meds.

May 2019 I had an episode and landed back in the hospital under 5150 this time just for ideation. I begged again the first 2 days to be let out. My husband came every night to visit and my parents at least once since my dad works out of town. I participated when I could and got out in 3 days. I went into IOP again for 12 weeks. Then last 2 weeks of October come and I’m back in the ideation stage. I need the hospital, but the insurance policy changed and I don’t know if it’s covered. I go like that until mid November. I get put on new medications and have to cold turkey off one drug and slowly go on one and whatnot. In the beginning I can’t tell what’s real and what is a dream. For a week I live like that. Then I have a day or two of being ok, and switch to being angry. Cold turkeying that drug made me lose touch with reality for a whole week then adding that new drug made me angry. I had to stop one of the new drugs (the one that made me angry).

I’ve had trouble sleeping off and on my whole life probably due to episodes. It got worse when my grandma on my dads side passed away and lately seem to have trouble often even on meds to help.

My resting heart rate is always above 100. Often around 120 and has gotten as high as 153 (resting).

On the combo I’m on now I’ve thought about giving myself a labottomy when I used to want to drill open my head and try to fix whatever is wrong with me.

April 2020 and I haven’t had a job since about July of 2018. Before COVID-19, I was getting panic attacks every day having to take my daughter to school. In fact she missed the day school closed (March 16,2020). The panic was bad and I couldn’t get myself to drive. I’ve been fighting to get on social security disability and I have a lawyer. I had a hearing in January 2020, but needed a court ordered psych appt. The appt was scheduled for late March and was canceled because of COVID-19. Since we are a 1 income family in San Diego, it’s hard to afford our house.

I’ve had meds make me talk slow, think slow, fall fast asleep at work, hungry 24/7, thirsty 24/7, have to tinkle every 45 mins, make me tense all my muscles 24/7 for weeks. I’ve had them effect my memory. Even my memory of what everyday words are.

May 2020 I’m so stressed about everything that I’m getting massive heartburn again. I don’t know what medication to help aleviate it because lithium reacts with everything.

July 2020 stress got to me. The stress of possibly not being able to stay in my house, the stress of my backyard being so full of weeds that my husky had to get fully shaved and get over 300 foxtails pulled from his skin (and of course the bill that came with it), the stress of my husband having a kidney stone in each kidney, the stress of my husbands car not having ac and his drive to and from work is 1 hour each way (and of course not being able to afford to fix it), the stress of my car leaking oil (and again not being able to afford fixing it), and I’m sure there is more. I went out with my parents and they asked me to be friends with someone who stopped being my friend because of my disorder in order to make my brother happy. That hurt. I texted them and wanted them to know how that made me feel especially while I’m dealing with all this other stuff and got some crappy replies. I then realized that I was being stigmatized by family and they weren’t the only ones and I lost it. I got put on another 5150 July 1st. I felt like I had lost a huge part of my support team. I wanted to stab myself in the throat and make a special note to my dad as to why he, my mom, and my brother made me kill myself. While in the hospital I realized that my husband and his father (when he is able to visit) are sympathetic to what I am going through and my husband does everything he can to make things easier on me. I am very lucky to have him. Later in July I had another instance where I couldn’t tell what was real and what was not. I hope that isn’t a regular thing again.

July still and I found out my brother had invited my bipolar best friend over for a bbq and made advances and was shut down. He text her dirty texts and she told me she still shut him down and I was upset because never once did anyone in my family reach out to see if I was ok after getting out of the hospital, but my brother would text my friend he’s hung out with less than 5 times? So I message him and he gets defensive and I decide to cut him from my life. I’m upset the couple days after and my husband tells me my daughter is showing more signs of bipolar (she’s 10 and there’s a 10% chance of passing it down). I get more upset and miscommunication leads to my husband calling my parents who I am still mad at for stigmatizing me. The first thing my dad does when he gets here? Tries to fix the door handle to the bathroom because my mom couldn’t open the door when there was another one she could have used instead of check on me like my husband had asked. Things get heated and I tell them they were the reason I was hospitalized on July 1st and they then said they were calling the police. More things were said about how upset and how they don’t even try to learn or read a book to learn and they said “no book can teach me about bipolar.” And I said the whole family stigmatizes me by not saying anything when I say I can babysit and my dad said “well no wonder they think they are a danger to their kids look at you!” I told them to get out and my mom had to be forced out due to refusing to leave without my child. She then called my daughters phone and tried to talk her into walking outside to them so they could take her from me. A therapist called and deemed me ok to not go to the hospital and wait until my regular appointment (in a few minutes from then). My regular therapist then called and talked to me and came to the same conclusion as the therapist before her. My husband came home to my parents on the porch. My father then told him that I was in rage and that it was just a seizure. I was not. I am hurt and sad and upset and misunderstood. I don’t understand why people don’t get that mental illness is a real thing. Why can’t you learn about bipolar from a book? How do doctors learn? You learn how it works and what the symptoms are and then you learn the specifics of the person you love. How is that a difficult concept?

I have been having seizures at night now though. Multiple a night. Just small few second ones. Haven’t been able to sleep for a few nights unless I get so tired I pass out.

As a kid I’ve never felt like I fit in with my family and it transferred into adulthood even before I found out I was bipolar. I didn’t feel happy when I felt I should have been. I felt left out from the girls group because I didn’t like the same things they did, but I didn’t fit into the boys group either. Then adulthood. I was the first out of all the cousins to have a child and get married and buy a house, but I’m not the oldest. I just never fit. I see how the oldest and second youngest (of the girl group) go out to bingo together and of course the oldest and youngest are sisters so they are close, but me? I had 2 brothers. Where did I fit? They hung with the boy cousins. I didn’t have anything in common with either group. Again adulthood I still don’t fit because I don’t have a job and my kid is over 5 years older than the age of the babies everyone else just had. Now we add bipolar to the group and no one else has a mental disorder. None diagnosed at least.

More about my childhood, but first I’ve been having trouble sleeping. Insomnia due to stress, seizures which I’ve never had before (due to stress), and things I should have grown out of (thanks genetics... due to stress). I’ve never been happy with myself because of it and I’ve always had trouble sleeping. Most of my sleeping issues came after my grandma died. All I could think about was death. Burning alive in a house fire, drowning, being creamated alive, being buried alive, etc. I got more depressed.

Growing up at family functions I would ask to “play in the car” which meant sit and wait to go home. Now looking back I know I was sad and overwhelmed with the loud noises and not fitting in. I’d throw up every Easter. I was told it was because I ate to much candy. Now I see it was anxiety. Anxiety to find all my eggs because my family is competitive. Anxiety because my family is loud. Anxiety because I didn’t fit in.

I didn’t fit in at school either. I said earlier I was always made fun of. I forgot about how the kids would always dare different boys to ask me out and then laugh about it. My husband has learned not to tell me I’m pretty or beautiful because it makes me cry. I don’t believe him. I don’t believe any compliments ever and never have. They upset me. I’ve taken lipstick or eyeliner and written “fat, ugly, useless” ect on my mirror. I gave up on wearing make up because to me, it’s not to make you look pretty, it’s to enhance your beauty and i don’t feel I have any. First it was my cystic acne and now it’s my weight. I’ll never be how I want to look again because doctors don’t care. I was literally told “would you rather be alive and fat or dead?” I want to be happy. What’s the point of a life if you aren’t happy?

Growing up I didn’t feel like I got much attention. I tried to come up with ways to break a bone at school 1-5 grade. Lotion on my hands then go on the monkey bars, play the tougher games like red rover where people did try to break your arms while running over, ect. Nothing worked.

It’s been a hell of a ride. Paranoia, obsession, fixation, anger, hypomania, depression. It’s hard. It’s really hard to live this way. I finally got someone to help me with my weight loss early April 2020 after getting to be 110lbs over what I was. I still struggle with mood swings because obviously there is no cure and I can’t remember things and often forget what everyday things are called. Some times I feel like I am putting on a face for others. Like a “happy face”, so they don’t have to ask “what’s wrong”. I do know (when I’m in my wise mind) that I have help and a small amount of people who love me who will be there for me when I need it.

It’s August now and my parents are lying to my husband about what happened just like they lied about why they asked me to be friends with someone for my brothers sake. First it was because the wedding. I pointed out they asked it was after they broke up. They stated it was just to be in the same room. I stated no that’s what was said after I told them why she didn’t want to be my friend anymore. Why am I wrong? Why lie? Why not admit it?! You fucked up! Just because my brain doesn’t produce chemicals to make me happy doesn’t mean it makes me stupid. “We called our granddaughter to come outside to the porch.” Ok. Then what? You were under the impression someone was going to take me away which in turn means you thought you would get my daughter. That’s stealing. I didn’t want her outside and you knew that.

Still beginning of August. I guess July was too rough with me not sleeping that since August came along and I fall asleep all the time and I can’t wake up. You’d think sleep would be a good thing, but the sleep I get is nothing but nightmares that I can’t wake up from. I went to the doctor the other day and found out that a small lump I’ve had on my shoulder since 4th grade is a cyst brought on by stress. I also have psoriasis... brought on by stress. I have been shaking a lot lately due to anxiety and money problems keep getting worse. My stomach won’t stop hurting.

Wow it’s the first Saturday in August. How much has happened. That girl my parents asked if I would be friend with for my brother btw is married. I had asked my friend of like 25 years when the incident happened if she would take her off things like Instagram and Facebook and stuff and she had a fit, but half took her off Instagram. You know where you unfollow them but they still follow you? So yea I was still mad but she claimed she didn’t know how to not have her on Instagram. You know that “block” button. Yea I guess that doesn’t exist. So recently after my parents thing I see she adds the new Facebook page (I blocked one so this is a new one) and I lose me shit). She text me asking me how I am doing and I not word for word say “don’t ask how I am if you don’t give a shit. I see you added that bitch recently and I don’t know if you’ve done reading or not on mental health, but triggers are things that set back forward progress. I don’t get why I fight for you to be in my life when you don’t fight for me to be in yours. Don’t text me again” and I blocked her. She then had her daughter (who’s always grounded from her phone) bombard my daughters phone with “can my brother and I sleep over? Auntie has to answer my moms texts though” like what the fuck?! She’s always been a “user.” And when I say “user” I mean “drive me here and I’ll ignore you the whole concert” “give me money and I’ll say I’ll pay you back and never actually will” “ watch my kids every weekend for like 2 months and I’ll never return the favor.” Shit like that. I’m out. Done. To quote my favorite movie in a time of pain this Katelynn “chick must have beer flavored nipples.”

August is the month that just keeps giving. I am non stop nauseous. I threw up the other day and it caused me to have a nose bleed. Mental health drug withdrawals are no joke. Hopefully I’m on a good mix again for another year or whatever. Once the withdrawals stop, I need to stop the stress and anxiety. My husband says my dad is trying to make an effort to learn now, but I don’t know if it’s too late. He and my mom have already triggered me many times by asking me to be friends with that girl who didn’t want to be my friend because my illness to make my brother happy. My dad also told me I’m a danger to children when I’ve only ever hurt myself whereas his oldest has gotten expelled from high school for fighting and has a track record for punching holes in walls and hitting cabinet doors off hinges, but because I have a label, I’m dangerous. There’s just some things you just can’t take back.

I don’t know if I’ve already stated, but I forget what things are called and the stress to get my thoughts and what I’m trying to say out is huge because I don’t want to hear “what?” “I missed that” “I didn’t hear what you said.” It’s cause I didn’t get to finish! I stopped to figure out what the word was now I forgot the whole sentence! Colored pencils are colored sticks. Elote is elbow. Ice is grass. Posture is prosper. I HATE this! I come up with ANY word that will come out to avoid a pause so I can avoid “what?” I truely cannot remember the word either until someone tells me.

It’s the end of August and my parents and I are slowly starting to talk. First about small things like video games, but yesterday I called my mom and told her I was sorry for how I expressed my feeling. I said I never should have acted out in anger and should have come to them calmly (though now thinking about it, I did and it didn’t work, but what’s done is done). My dad is reading the book and really taking it in. The book being from a bipolar persons perspective is nice for him. My mom is also doing internet research. My brother has been asking how I have been doing which is nice though I still don’t know how I feel about him and how he treated my friend. My oldest brother has been silent. We’ve never been close. It hurts, but he’s got two little girls to deal with I guess. I would have been asking about him, but oh well I’ll take what I get. I’ve did the distance thing I realized because I was afraid of losing them again. Afraid the anger and fighting would come back and it would just be a never ending cycle. I hope this book opens eyes. On other notes, I’ve upgraded to nocturnal panic disorder. I’ve been waking up in a panic from sleep. Still having nightmares, but the times I don’t, PANIC!

My parents and I are doing better since my dad is reading the book. I appologized for how I said things in anger to both of them because it wasn’t fair to them for my to have done that even if I did try calmly. I should have kept trying. My dad said the book is really eye opening and he didn’t need the apology, but appreciated it. He said reading it made him realize I couldn’t help it. I can’t explain right now what he meant, but it’s just like loss of control (I posted the book in another post). I text my brother to tell him I love him because I do and I understand why he would ask my friend out, but I’m still upset because I know I was a rebound and he didn’t have good thoughts. I know he knows it was a mistake and in time we will be ok. On another note, I found out why I was having nocturnal panic attacks. I stopped my sleeping pills that is also for anxiety. I started a medication that I haven’t been on for a little and I took my on the spot anxiety med the other day and i had a few psychotic breaks again (a few in one day). So now I won’t take my on the spots anymore.

My primary care doctor has put me on a medication to help with weight loss in addition to the others I am on. Its also supposed to help with full body pain and swelling which I have. In just three days I have already noticed reduced swelling and pain. Dieting is still hard, but less hard. I am couting calories safely to lose 1 pound a week and eating at least 80 grams of protein. Thats it. Thats my diet I am following. Nothing special or fancy or hard to do. Simple.

Took almost 2 years on the dot, but I finally got on SSDI as of early Sept. and early Oct. I got my award letter. I didnt fully win my case (only 16 months out of 2 years, but I will take it). Also, I don’t get paid for the first 5 months of that 16 months which I don’t fully understand, plus I have to pay the lawyers, but still, I won. We also got a notice saying that since I have a child, I can apply to get money to pay for her as well. That was easy to apply for and only takes a month to hear back for, so I should hear back early Nov.

With pancreatic cancer, what Stephen needs is legalised cannabis

I was lying face down when I first heard about Stephen Schulman. I’d been feeling sorry for myself, complaining of an aching wrist and back – the vestiges of an age-inappropriate roller skating accident – while my massage therapist Elisa worked to soothe my pain.

Eventually, our conversation turned to her friend Stephen. At only 41, just months after marrying the love of his life, Stephen had gone to the doctor complaining of stomach pains and the inability to keep anything down. He reemerged with a diagnosis: stage-3 pancreatic cancer, inoperable due to a very large tumor wrapping itself around a major artery in his abdomen.

In essence, a death sentence.

Elisa had been buying Stephen sublingual CBD oil – $89 for one ounce – because it proved to be the only thing effectively alleviating the tingling and numbness that had recently consumed his fingers and toes. He and his husband Wade’s savings had been bled dry by their $2,400 per month insurance premium plus general expenses. Stephen is unable to work since his life has become a blur of excruciating pain, treatments, hope, fear, and heavy doses of opioids like fentanyl and oxycodone.

Stephen first heard about the reported pain relief benefits of medical marijuana and CBD oil for cancer patients a year into his treatment. When he asked his doctors about applying for a medical marijuana card, their reluctance confused him. Still, he persisted and when he started using both, he found they controlled his symptoms as well or, in some cases, better than opioids. He also found out that no insurance company covers their high costs.

As Elisa told me Stephen’s story, I considered how the small discomforts I’d come in with made it harder for me to get around in the day or to sleep well at night. How they made me feel irritable and fragile. And how I could pay a negligible amount of money to a lovely woman to help soothe them for me. My ailments were absolutely nothing by comparison to Stephen’s, yet what he needs is elusive at best, prohibited at worst.

Politicians have been embroiled in contentious debates for years about the morality and logistics of legalizing medical marijuana despite reputable studies, like the RAND study, which supports its efficacy. In the meantime, people like Stephen suffer.

I decided to document Stephen’s life because his story had something valuable to remind us all about the gap between the abstract moralizing of politicians and the needs of the people they represent.

Wade is a freelance hairstylist. Once in a while, he sits Stephen down in the chair in his home salon and treats him to a haircut, shave and facial mask.

Stephen remembers clearly what it felt like to be diagnosed: “It just hits you like a ton of bricks: ‘Everything is about to change.’ Your life is going to be about doing chemo, radiation, things you wouldn’t normally do and it’s going to be a hard, uphill battle.”

Wade adds Osmolite formula, a therapeutic nutrition for patients with increased calorie and protein needs, to a drip every other night to help Stephen maintain a healthy weight. The procedure takes eight hours and is very uncomfortable. Lack of appetite and nausea leading to unhealthy weight loss are common for pancreatic patients. The use of medical marijuana has helped Stephen greatly with these symptoms.

Artist Jason Naylor, whose self described mission is to “spread color and positivity across the globe,” heard about Stephen’s plight through social media and made him the “Love” painting, which he hand delivered to the couple, that hangs above Stephen and Wade’s bed.

Overwhelmed by medical expenses, Stephen and Wade accepted the offer of a friend to set up a GoFundMe page for them.

“We have to lean on each other, trust one another, and be up front about how we’re doing and feeling every single day,” Stephen says of his relationship. “There’s no way I would have been able to get through this diagnosis without Wade. I appreciate him more every day. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true.”

Clyde, one of the couple’s two cats, the other is Bonnie (both male), watches as Stephen tries on his kickboxing gloves. Kickboxing was something Stephen enjoyed with friends before his diagnoses when he was 40 pounds heavier. Now, there are some days he’s too weak to get out of bed.

Stephen describes the current state of his disease; “Stage 3-pancreatic cancer without the possibility of the Whipple procedure because of the placement of the tumor. They do a CT scan every three months and determine the next steps based on those results. A very risky surgery – I believe it’s only performed by one doctor in the US at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota – is my only option and we’re hoping to make that happen. But insurance has, so far, refused to pay for it or the chemotherapy I’ll need beforehand, and it is astronomically expensive.”

“It makes me smile a little to wear fun, colorful socks,” Stephen says in reference to the “cock socks” he wears to physical therapy.

“I think it’s funny,” Stephen remarks, “that in America you’re able to buy alcohol, which is known to cause all these problems, but CBD oil and medical marijuana are more regulated and looked down upon. It’s sad because they’ve definitely helped me immensely.”

In New York State, medication comes primarily in the form of pills, vapes, oils and lotions. Dispensaries can’t distribute edibles because it’s much harder to control the doses a patient receives in them. Every dose at Columbia Care New York is consistent and titrated, meaning it’s increased, if need be, slowly over time.

Tricia Reed, PharmD, Columbia Care New York’s lead pharmacist, describes the purported benefits of some of their products.

“High THC products are good for nausea, vomiting, and severe pain, giving more of an opiate-type pain relief. THC is a good muscle relaxer and helps with sleep. CBD is a great anti- inflammatory, works well for nerve pain, and is an anti-convulsant so it’s good for seizures.

Every dose has to deliver the exact milligram per milliliter as prescribed. Each time you take an inhalation from the vapor, it gives you a specific mg.”

When a patient visits Columbia Care for the first time, they meet with a pharmacist who takes them through a full consultation to determine what products they may respond to best.

“In the higher THC products,” Reed explains, “there can be a euphoric feeling which might not be so bad for patients going through a hard time. It’s similar to the side effects you’d get from other meds like Valium. I encourage patients to think of it that way. It’s just a side effect similar to those of other medications they may have already taken. There is still that sense of taboo or stigma that goes along with marijuana. A lot of what we’ve been trying to do is to de-stigmatize it.

Rosemary Mazanet, an oncologist by original training, is chief scientific officer for Columbia Care. “When I think about the disconnect between the enormous promise that cannabis products bring and the fact that there’s such an air about it that makes it tawdry, it comes down to the fact that it’s federally illegal.”

She adds: “In the state of Massachusetts, where I live, the Massachusetts Medical Society sent a letter to doctors stating that they could recommend cannabis when it was made legal there, but that they were at risk for losing their license. ‘We don’t know what will happen, but the federal government may take action’, the letter essentially said. We do know that physicians at any hospital that’s federally funded will be terminated if they recommend medical marijuana to a patient. That’s made physicians understandably very reluctant. I do get angry because this should be easy and it’s not. We need to fix it!”

“Cancer is a mind fuck,” Wade says. “You’re hit with devastating and debilitating news that your loved one’s life has an expiration date and you realize your own powerlessness and that begins to take its toll on your spirit. All you can do is try to remember that love is the greatest gift you can give anyone.”

 (November 28, 1907 – April 27, 1977) was an African-American painter, sculptor, illustrator, muralist and teacher who lived and worked in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem. Alston was active in the Harlem Renaissance; Alston was the first African-American supervisor for the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. Alston designed and painted murals at the Harlem Hospital and the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building. In 1990 Alston's bust of Martin Luther King, Jr. became the first image of an African American displayed at the White House.

Personal life

Early life

Charles Henry Alston was born on November 28, 1907, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Reverend Primus Priss Alston and Anna Elizabeth Miller Alston, and was the youngest of five children. Only three survived past infancy: His sister Rousmaniere, and his brothers Wendell and Charles. His father was born into slavery in 1851 in Pittsboro, North Carolina; after the Civil War, he graduated from St. Augustine's College and became a prominent minister and founder of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. He was described as a "race man": an African American who dedicated his skills to the furtherance of the black race. Reverend Alston met his wife when she was a student at his school. Charles was nicknamed "Spinky" by his father, and kept the nickname as an adult. In 1910, when Charles was three, his father died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage. Locals described him in admiration as the "Booker T. Washington of Charlotte".

In 1913 Anna Alston married Harry Bearden. Through the marriage, the future artist Romare Bearden became Charles’ cousin. The two Bearden families lived across the street from each other; the friendship between Romare and Charles would last a lifetime. As a child Alston was inspired by his older brother Wendell's drawings of trains and cars, which the young artist copied. Charles also played with clay, creating a sculpture of North Carolina. As an adult he reflected on his memories of sculpting with clay as a child: "I’d get buckets of it and put it through strainers and make things out of it. I think that's the first art experience I remember, making things." His mother was a skilled embroiderer and took up painting at the age of 75. His father was also good at drawing, wooing Alston's mother with small sketches in the medians of letters he wrote her.

In 1915 the family moved to New York, as many African-American families did during the Great Migration. Alston's step-father, Henry Bearden, left before his wife and children to secure a job overseeing elevator operations and the newsstand staff at the Bretton Hotel in the Upper West Side. The family lived in Harlem and was considered middle-class. During the Great Depression, the people of Harlem suffered economically. The "stoic strength" seen within the community was later expressed in Charles’ fine art. At Public School 179 in Manhattan, the boy's artistic abilities were recognized and he was asked to draw all of the school posters during his years there.

Higher education

Alston graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School, where he was nominated for academic excellence and was the art editor of the school's magazine, The Magpie. He was a member of the Arista - National Honor Society and also studied drawing and anatomy at the Saturday school of the National Academy of Art . In high school he was given his first oil paints and learned about his aunt Bessye Bearden's art salons, which stars like Duke Ellington and Langston Hughes attended. After graduating in 1925, he attended Columbia University, turning down a scholarship to the Yale School of Fine Arts.

Alston entered the pre-architectural program only to lose interest upon seeing the lack of success many African-American architects had in the field. After also experimenting with pre-med, he decided that math, physics and chemistry "was not just my bag" and he entered the fine arts program. During his time at Columbia he joined Alpha Phi Alpha, worked on the university's Columbia Daily Spectator and drew cartoons for the school's magazine Jester. He also hung out in Harlem restaurants and clubs, where his love for jazz and black music would be fostered. In 1929 he graduated and received a fellowship to study at Teachers College, where he obtained his Master's in 1931.

Later life

For the years 1942–43 Alston was stationed in the army at Fort Huachuca in Arizona. Upon returning to New York on April 8, 1944, he married Dr. Myra Adele Logan, then an intern at the Harlem Hospital. They met when he was working on a mural project at the hospital. Their home, including his studio, as on Edgecombe Avenue near Highbridge Park. The couple lived close to family; at their frequent gatherings Alston enjoyed cooking and Myra played piano. During the 1940s Alston also took occasional art classes studying under Alexander Kostellow.

In January 1977 Myra Logan died. Months later on April 27, 1977, Charles Spinky Alston died after a long bout with cancer. His memorial service was held at St. Martins Episcopal Church on May 21, 1977, in New York City.

Professional career

While obtaining his master's degree, Alston was the boys’ work director at the Utopia Children's House, started by James Lesesne Wells. He also began teaching at the Harlem Community Art Center, founded by Augusta Savage in the basement of what is now the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Alston's teaching style was influenced by the work of John Dewey, Arthur Wesley Dow, and Thomas Munro. During this period, Alston began to teach the 10-year-old Jacob Lawrence, whom he strongly influenced. Alston was introduced to African art by the poet Alain Locke. In the late 1920s Alston joined Bearden and other black artists who refused to exhibit in William E. Harmon Foundation shows, which featured all-black artists in their traveling exhibits. Alston and his friends thought the exhibits were curated for a white audience, a form of segregation which the men protested. They did not want to be set aside but exhibited on the same level as art peers of every skin color.

In 1938 the Rosenwald Fund provided money for Alston to travel to the South, which was his first return there since leaving as a child. His travel with Giles Hubert, an inspector for the Farm Security Administration, gave him access to certain situations and he photographed many aspects of rural life. These photographs serves as the basis for a series of genre portraits depicting southern black life. In 1940 he completed Tobacco Farmer, the portrait of a young black farmer in white overalls and a blue shirt with a youthful yet serious look upon his face, sitting in front of the landscape and buildings he works on and in. That same year he received a second round of funding from the Rosenwald Fund to travel South, and he spent extended time at Atlanta University.

During the 1930s and early 1940s, Alston created illustrations for magazines such as Fortune, Mademoiselle, The New Yorker, Melody Maker and others. He also designed album covers for artists such as Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins. Alston became staff artist at the Office of War Information and Public Relations in 1940, creating drawings of notable African Americans. These images were used in over 200 black newspapers across the country by the government to "foster goodwill with the black citizenry."

Eventually Alston left commercial work to focus on his own artwork. In 1950, he became the first African-American instructor at the Art Students League, where he remained on faculty until 1971. In 1950, his Painting was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and his artwork was one of few purchased by the museum. He landed his first solo exhibition in 1953 at the John Heller Gallery, which represented artists such as Roy Lichtenstein. He exhibited there five times from 1953 to 1958.

In 1956, he became the first African-American instructor at the Museum of Modern Art, where he taught for a year before going to Belgium on behalf of MOMA and the State Department. He coordinated the children's community center at Expo 58. In 1958 he was awarded a grant from and was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

In 1963, Alston co-founded Spiral with Romare Bearden and Hale Woodruff. Spiral served as a collective of conversation and artistic exploration for a large group of artists who "addressed how black artists should relate to American society in a time of segregation." Artists and arts supporters gathered for Spiral, such as Emma Amos, Perry Ferguson and Merton Simpson. This group served as the 1960s version of 306. Alston was described as an "intellectual activist", and in 1968 he spoke at Columbia about his activism. In the mid-1960s Spiral created an exhibition of black and white artworks, but the exhibition was never officially sponsored by the group due to inner-group disagreements.

In 1968, Alston received a presidential appointment from Lyndon Johnson to the National Council of Culture and the Arts. Mayor John Lindsay appointed him to the New York City Art Commission in 1969. He was made full professor at City College of New York in 1973 where he had taught since 1968. In 1975 he was awarded the first Distinguished Alumni Award from Teachers College. The Art Student's League created a 21-year merit scholarship in 1977 under Alston's name to commemorate each year of his tenure.

Painting a person and a culture

Alston shared studio space with Henry Bannarn at 306 W. 141st Street, which served as an open space for artists, photographers, musicians, writers and the like. Other artists held studio space at 306, such as Jacob Lawrence, Addison Bate and his brother Leon. During this time Alston founded the Harlem Artists Guild with Savage and Elba Lightfoot to work towards equality in WPA art programs in New York. During the early years of 306, Alston focused on mastering portraiture. Early works such as Portrait of a Man (1929) show Alston's detailed and realistic style depicted through pastels and charcoals, inspired by the style of Winold Reiss. In his Girl in a Red Dress (1934) and The Blue Shirt (1935), he used modern and innovative techniques for his portraits of young individuals in Harlem. Blue Shirt is thought to be a portrait of Jacob Lawrence. During this time he also created Man Seated with Travel Bag (c. 1938–40), showing the seedy and bleak environment, contrasting with work like the racially charged Vaudeville (c. 1930) and its caricature style of a man in blackface.

Inspired from his trip south, Alston began his "family series" in the 1940s. Intensity and angularity come through in the faces of the youth in his portraits Untitled (Portrait of a Girl) and Untitled (Portrait of a Boy). These works also show the influence that African sculpture had on his portraiture, with Portrait of a Boy showing more cubist features. Later family portraits show Alston's exploration of religious symbolism, color, form and space. His family group portraits are often faceless, which Alston states is the way that white America views blacks. Paintings such as Family (1955) show a woman seated and a man standing with two children – the parents seem almost solemn while the children are described as hopeful and with a use of color made famous by Cézanne. In Family Group(c. 1950) Alston's use of gray and ochre tones brings together the parents and son as if one with geometric patterns connecting them together as if a puzzle. The simplicity of the look, style and emotion upon the family is reflective and probably inspired by Alston's trip south. His work during this time has been described as being "characterized by his reductive use of form combined with a sun-hued". During this time he also started to experiment with ink and wash painting seen in work such as Portrait of a Woman (1955) as well as creating portraits to illustrate the music surrounding him in Harlem. Blues Singer #4 shows a female singer on stage with a white flower on her shoulder and a bold red dress, reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald. Girl in a Red Dress is thought to be Bessie Smith, for whom he drew many times when she was recording and performing. Jazz was an important influence in Alston's work and social life, representing itself in other works like Jazz (1950) and Harlem at Night.

The 1960s civil rights movement influenced his work heavily with artworks influenced by inequality and race relations in the United States. One of his few religious artworks was created in 1960, Christ Head, with an angular "Modiglianiesque" portrait of Jesus Christ. Seven years later he created You never really meant it, did you, Mr. Charlie? which, in a similar style as Christ Head shows a black man standing against a red sky "looking as frustrated as any individual can look", according to Alston.

Modernism

Experimenting with the use of negative space and organic forms in the late 1940s, by the mid-1950s Alston began creating notably modernist style paintings. Woman with Flowers (1949) has been described as a tribute to Modigliani and African art makes another strong appearance in Ceremonial (1950). Untitled works during the era show his use of color overlay using muted colors to create simple layered abstracts of still live. Symbol (1953) relates to Picasso's Guernica, which was a favorite work of Alston's. His final work of the 1950s, Walking serves as a precursor to the 1960s: civil rights movement. The painting, which was inspired by the Montgomery Bus Boycott, has come to represent "the surge of energy among African Americans to organize in their struggle for full equality." About the artwork, Alston is quoted "The idea of a march was growing....It was in the air...and this painting just came. I called it Walking on purpose. It wasn't the militancy that you saw later. It was a very definite walk-not going back, no hesitation."

Black and white

The civil rights movement of the 1960s was a major influence on Alston. Considered to be one of his most powerful and impressive periods in the late 1950s he began working in black and white up until the mid-1960s. Some of the works are simple abstracts of black ink on white paper, similar to a Rorschach test. Untitled (c. 1960s) shows a boxing match in great simplicity with an attempt to express the drama of the fight through few brushstrokes. Alston worked with oil-on-Masonite during this period as well, utilizing impasto, cream and ochre to create a moody cave-like artwork. Black and White #1 (1959) is one of Alston's more "monumental" works. Gray, white and black come together to fight for space on an abstract canvas, in a softer form than the more harsh Franz Kline. Alston continued to explore the relationship between monochromatic hues throughout the series which Wardlaw describes as "some of the most profoundly beautiful works of twentieth-century American art."

Murals

In the beginning Charles Alston's mural work was inspired by the work of Aaron Douglas, Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, the latter who he met when they did mural work in New York. In 1943 Alston was elected to the board of directors of the National Society of Mural Painters. He created murals for the Harlem Hospital, Golden State Mutual, American Museum of Natural History, Public School 154, the Bronx Family and Criminal Court and the Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, New York.

Harlem Hospital Murals

Originally hired as an easel painter, in 1935 Alston became the first African-American supervisor to work for the WPA's Federal Art Project (FAP) in New York, which would also serve as his first mural work. At this time he was awarded WPA Project Number 1262 – an opportunity to oversee a group of artists creating murals and to supervise their painting for the Harlem Hospital. The first government commission ever awarded to African-American artists including Beauford Delaney, Seabrook Powell and Vertis Hayes. He also had the chance to create and paint his own contribution to the collection: Magic in Medicine and Modern Medicine. These paintings were part of a diptych completed in 1936 depicting the history of medicine in the African-American community and Beauford Delaney served as assistant. When creating the murals Alston was inspired by the work of Aaron Douglas, who a year earlier had created the public art piece Aspects of Negro Life for the New York Public Library, and researched traditional African culture, including traditional African medicine. Magic in Medicine, which depicts African culture and holistic healing, is considered one of "America's first public scenes of Africa". All of the murals sketches submitted were accepted by the FAP, however, four were denied creation by the hospital superintendent Lawrence T. Dermody and commissioner of hospitals S.S. Goldwater due to the excessive amount of African-American representation in the works. The artists fought the response through letter writing and four years later succeeded in gaining the right to complete the murals. The sketches for Magic in Medicine and Modern Medicine were exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art's "New Horizons in American Art".

Condition

Alston's murals were hung in the Women's Pavilion of the hospital over uncapped radiators which caused the paintings to deteriorate from the steam. Plans failed to recap the radiators. In 1959 Alston estimated, in a letter to the Department of Public Works, that the conservation would cost $1,500 but the funds were never acquired. In 1968, after Martin Luther King Jr.'s death, Alston was asked to create another mural for the hospital to be placed in a pavilion named after the assassinated civil rights leader titled Man Emerging from the Darkness of Poverty and Ignorance into the Light of a Better World". One year after Alston's death in 1977, a group of artists and historians, including the renowned painter and collagist Romare Bearden and art historian Greta Berman, together with administrators from the hospital, and from the NYC Art Commission, examined the murals, and presented a proposal for their restoration to then-mayor Ed Koch. The request was approved, and conservator Alan Farancz set to work in 1979, rescuing the murals from further decay. Many years passed, and the murals began to deteriorate again – especially the Alston works, which continued to suffer effects from the radiators. In 1991 the Municipal Art Society's Adopt-a-Mural program was launched and the Harlem Hospital murals were chosen for further restoration (Greta Berman. Personal experience). A grant from Alston's sister Rousmaniere Wilson and step-sister Aida Bearden Winters assisted in completing a restoration of the works in 1993. In 2005 Harlem Hospital announced a $2 million project to conserve Alston's murals and three other pieces in the original commissioned project as part of a $225 million hospital expansion.

Golden State Mutual Murals

In the late 1940s Alston became involved in a mural project commissioned by Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company which asked the artists to create work involving African-American contributions to the settling of California. Alston worked with Hale Woodruff on the murals in a large studio space in New York where they utilized ladders to reach the upper parts of the canvas. The artworks, which are considered "priceless contributions to American narrative art", consists of two panels: Exploration and Colonization by Alston and Settlement and Development by Woodruff. Alston's piece covers the post-colonial period of 1527 to 1850. Images of James Beckwourth, Biddy Mason, and William Leidesdorff are portrayed in the well detailed historical mural. While both artists kept in contact with African Americans on the West Coast during its creation, influencing the content and depictions. The murals, which were unveiled in 1949, have been on display in the lobby of the Golden State Mutual Headquarters. Due to economic downturn Golden State was forced to sell their entire art collection to ward off its mounting debts and as of spring 2011 the National Museum of African American History and Culture had offered $750,000 to purchase the artworks which led to a controversy regarding the importance of the artworks which have been estimated to be worth at least $5 million. It was requested that the murals be covered by city landmark protections by the Los Angeles Conservancy. The state of California had declined philanthropic proposals to keep the murals in their original location and the Smithsonian withdrew their offer. The murals are currently awaiting their fate in California courts.

Sculpture

Alston also created sculptures. Head of a Woman (1957) shows his move towards a "reductive and modern approach to sculpture....where facial features were suggested rather than fully formulated in three dimensions,". In 1970 Alston was commissioned by the Community Church of New York to create a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. for $5,000, with limited copies produced. In 1990 Alston's bronze bust of Martin Luther King Jr. (1970), became the first image of an African American displayed in the White House.

Reception

Art critic Emily Genauer stated that Alston "refused to be pigeonholed", regarding his varied exploration in his artwork. Patron Lemoine Pierce said of Alston's work: "Never thought of as an innovative artist, Alston generally ignored popular art trends and violated many mainstream art conventions; he produced abstract and figurative paintings often simultaneously, refusing to be stylistically consistent, and during his 40-year career he worked prolifically and unapologetically in both commercial and fine art." Romare Bearden described Alston as "...one of the most versatile artists whose enormous skill led him to a diversity of styles..." Bearden also describes the professionalism and impact that Alston had on Harlem and the African-American community: "'was a consummate artist and a voice in the development of African American art who never doubted the excellence of all people's sensitivity and creative ability. During his long professional career, Alston significantly enriched the cultural life of Harlem. In a profound sense, he was a man who built bridges between Black artists in varying fields, and between other Americans." Writer June Jordan described Alston as "an American artist of first magnitude, and he is a Black American artist of undisturbed integrity."

Around a month ago already my passenger side car window got shattered. It's still intact, just completely spidered out. I had been on my thirty minute break from work and parked near the grass side of my apartments. My window was actually rolled down half way too. With the health care system being the way that it is, is there any possibility that he could continue receiving health care despite his ineligibility? How to Move through Life with an Edge

Every former competitive athlete’s worst nightmare is that moment when you lose to a younger person doing the sport you love. When the cocoon of invincibility and superiority you’ve erected around yourself comes crashing down and a piece of your self-identity shatters. It can truly feel like the end.

I know the feeling. Several years ago on a family ski trip, my son challenged me to a downhill snowboard race. We’d been doing these races—and I’d been winning them—ever since he was old enough to board. It was tradition that we race, and that I win. It’s just how it played out.

This time was different. I was a newly minted member of the 6-decades club. He was a young man, fully grown, years of sports under his belt. He smoked me. It wasn’t even close. And suddenly I realized that despite being in the best shape of my life relative to my age, that upper limit was trending down.

Luckily, the existential crisis was short-lived if it ever really happened. A few moments were all I needed to realize this wasn’t a tragedy. It was the opposite: the graduation of my son into manhood, the passing of the torch.

Our snowboard race also highlighted a simple fact of human biology and aging that we all have to face. Performance inevitably declines. Michael Jordan in his 40s can’t beat Kevin Durant one-on-one. Usain Bolt won’t beat his WR 100M run from 2009. Arnold will never regain his Mr. Olympia title. It transcends physical output as well—the Rolling Stones won’t ever match “Sticky Fingers” or “Exile on Main Street,” the concluding books of “A Song of Ice and Fire” (if they ever come) will probably be worse than the first two.

And that’s okay. I’m fine with it. You should, too. Denying reality never goes well. It’ll ruin you. You can’t win.

But we still fight it.

A reader passed along a link to a paper entitled “Early and extraordinary peaks in physical performance come with a longevity cost.” The researchers tracked top Olympians from the early 20th century, recorded during which phase of life they attained “peak performance,” and recorded when they died. Those who peaked early tended to die younger than those who peaked later. The relationship was stronger the bigger and earlier the achievement.

They propose a few potential mechanisms, including excessive early mTOR activation or lopsided growth hormone/IGF signaling on the part of the early achievers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that were part of the story. But I have another idea. This was the early 1900s. There weren’t million dollar endorsement deals with Nike or Gatorade waiting for them. They weren’t famous after weeks of ceaseless media coverage. Jim Thorpe, one of the greatest Olympians of the early 20th century, died penniless. Olympians were true amateurs who, after the glory faded and the medals rusted over, had to figure out what to do with their lives. They often failed.

I’ve talked about peak performance before, about wringing out every last drop of performance and realizing your full potential. Well, peaks come and go. Once you hit it, you either have to keep pushing onward and working harder and harder, which isn’t sustainable for long, or you trend downward. You can’t stay there forever.

Some of the best athletes I’ve known haven’t figured it out. Either they try in vain to hold on to their past glories, maintain their output, and fail miserably or burn out, or they flounder aimlessly. Maybe that’s what happened to those Olympians in the study. 

There are people who figure that out.

My good friend (and dad to my great friend and Primal Blueprint colleague Brad Kearns) Dr. Walter Kearns is probably the world’s top 90+ golfer, who at 94 is on his third round (pun intended) of golfing buddies. He’s always complaining about not being able to see the ball and track its flight. Well, it’s because he hits the ball so damn far. He knows he’s not going to beat top guys fifty years his junior. He’s okay with that, but he’s also not hanging up his clubs anytime soon. That’s edge living, and it carries over into all areas.

When he was in the hospital recovering from emergency bowel obstruction surgery, Walter refused pain meds to avoid being drugged up and immobile. This allowed him to walk right out several days ahead of schedule. A nurse later pulled Brad aside and said most people his father’s age never recover from a surgery like that. Many never even leave the bed. She was convinced refusing the meds made the difference.

My chief marketing officer, Aaron Fox, a man who’s been with the company from the very beginning, has a great-grandmother who turns 100 this year. She’s avoided doctors and meds all her life and still lives in the same house she shared with his great-grandfather. After a check-up this year, her blood panel came back pristine, but she had high blood pressure. The doc recommended blood pressure meds—”With your excellent health, it could extend life another five years”—and she’s considering taking them. Even if she goes for it, it’ll be on her terms and only because she decided to. It’s really an attitude or spirit that seems to have kept her in good stead: It’s her life, her home, her body, and she’ll be damned to hand over control of any of it. 

I’ve often said that retirement kills only because people waste their free time. A buddy of mine has a father-in-law who retired several years ago. Rather than sit around watching bad daytime T.V. and getting angry on Facebook, he started a fledgling eBay business. A former mechanic and all-around automotive expert who had to give up his shop when he had a series of bad heart attacks and couldn’t maintain the rigorous pace of running a business, he now goes to L.A.-area swap meets and hunts for old car brochures, rare automotive tools, engine parts, and other collector’s items, then sells them for big profits to people across the world. He’s arguably more engaged and in better health than he was before retiring, and he’s doing it by repurposing his talents.

What’s this have to do with health and wellness?

Everything.

Living life on your own terms isn’t just a quaint turn of phrase. It has huge effects on your health.

A large body of research shows that the less control you think you have over your life, the higher your mortality risk. That persists even when you control for other health variables and biomarkers. It’s even true for animals. Self-agency—or even the illusion of it—appears to be a requirement for healthy, happy aging.

And unlike some of the characteristics shared by centenarians, like good genes, control is malleable. You can’t change the structure of your DNA. You can, however, wrest control over your own life.

How?

Pay attention to that voice inside urging you onward. If something speaks to your soul, answer the call. Check it out. See where it leads. It’s usually guiding you to a good place.

When something feels right, stay with the moment, even if you can’t articulate what’s happening. Suss it out. What are you doing? Who are you with? What were you thinking about? That feeling of “this is right, this is good” is a physiological hint that you should pay attention to what you’re doing—and maybe keep doing it.

Ignoring the call, however, is an abdication of control. 

How do you move on and keep going through life while maintaining and indulging that edge? How do you ride the edge?

In reading this blog, eating this way, questioning conventional wisdom, heeding the science, and listening to your body, you’re already doing it. You’ve made—or are in the process of making—some major changes to your lifestyle, changes that will pay dividends.

Moving through life along the edge isn’t necessarily about fitness training. It’s about having a good reason to get up in the morning. A business, a hobby, a project, a job, a family, a physical pursuit, or yes, a workout—anything that calls to you and provides meaning. And whatever that thing is, you go after it. 

Keep the fire going, but don’t get into battles you can’t win. Acknowledge and accept your weaknesses. Repurpose your skills and passions. Ride the decline into something new—and maybe better.

Challenge yourself. Maybe not every day, but often enough that you’re always excited about and engaged with something.

Think about ascending a mountain peak. You’re there. The view’s great. It’s frankly exhilarating being on top of the visible world. But you can’t go higher. There’s nowhere to go from there but down. How do you do it? Do you just head straight off, tumbling down over loose gravel to arrive at the bottom, bruised and disheveled? Do you plunge headfirst over a cliff, totally giving up? Or do you ride the edge, walk the range toward the horizon, gradually descending while remaining on a pinnacle?
