I guess i do sound a lil unfair n contradictory in my nfcv critiques since it strays too much from the og but also not enough. Idk how to explain it but there's a diff between doing a wild ass au/og story while keeping respect for the source material and wanting to do an og story but using the source material to w keep it recognizable and insulting said source at every turn. Or i guess im overanalyzing considering it also can't stand as it's own thing. And also how it's become the face of the franchise and such an "improvement" over those "silly games w no story" while the actual franchise with it's wonderful storytelling starves in a corner. Which would be more a fault of the consumers and not of the series but also the series very obviously feeds from this. Idk *shrugs*

Maybe this is just me being autistic or something, but I do not understand how movie/TV adaptations of games are so hard to make. The original media is right there??? Just use it as a basis for your script?????? Add and subtract where necessary for the medium while still keeping it the same story at heart????????? “But it’d be boring if it was a whole tv show” ok then why is it not boring as a game???????????? It's truly astonishing how IDW Sonic as a series manages to be more uncomfortable/infuriating than Netflix Castlevania, a show that tackles (very poorly) far more touchy themes and subjects. Imagined if IDW Sonic tried handling those same themes.

IDW Sonic has completely mangled the themes of agency and redemption, that much is true. Sonic has been turned into a preachy hypocritical bitch who will do anything to defend his "principles", including gaslighting his friends and passing off blame for his genuine mistakes, while himself not upholding them when expected ("big oof"). Whisper's trauma gets constantly disrespected by the people that are supposed to be her friends - Tangle, who steals the name of her dead friends for cool points; Lanolin, who treats her like she's insane and uses violence on her; Sonic, who tries to guilt-trip her into accepting Surge into her team. The writing is atrocious, and the lessons it accidentally teaches are atrocious, all because Flynn thinks it's just a "kids' book" so well, he can pretend to be deep but he can't actually think too hard about it.

But NFCV, among its plethora of issues related to its writing and themes - the edgy cynicism, the shallow CHURCH BAD, the veiled racism/xenophobia/Islamophobia, the complete disrespect of victims of trauma who are either played for laugh or treated like dumbasses who deserve to suffer - has honest to god rape apologism. It has a victim falling in love with, and only wanting in his life, a woman who abused him physically, mentally, emotionally and sexually, passing the message that what she did "wasn't so bad after all", because "well she also did him some good", because "he had fun" during his rape by deception (and let's face it, because she's a cute woman who is so sexy when she puts a leash on her male simp puppy 🙂). And it wasn't even intentional: it was the author's fetish gone unchallenged, mixed with his own personal spite against another person on the show. And this is completely indefensible for me. It is vile, it is a genuinely harmful rhetoric from real life, and I will never let it go.

almost every day after work i boot up PCSX2 to continue my game of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness on Trevor mode. and every time, without fail, i end up simply slow panning the camera around Trevor and sighing wistfully to myself

So i watched the ep one of netflixvania out of morbid curiosity after reading my mutual @beevean 's rants about it and said by someone who is almost completely fandom blind regarding the games and between the fedora tipping type of atheism (i think that the authors have actually never met a priest before), the needlessly edgy way gore is drawn (i am not opposed to extreme gore, i am a dorohedoro fan, it's just that it's obvious that it's drawn more in a "look how serious and mature we are" instead of being well integrated with the story) and the overall excessive vulgarity (did they really need to drag the goatfucking and the sibling incest jokes for that long?) I think that it's a bad series even if you don't consider the fact that it's a bad adaptation

I literally left a discord group that I had been in for like, a week because that's what they called N!Alucard. Also because they wouldn't let me talk about LoS, only about NFCV.

I remember liking many of the fanart and fanfiction when it was just the first two seasons, and like a little bit with season three, but yeah, I noticed that as well in just about every fanfic I read. I tried to reread a lot of those fics and man, so many of them only focused on N!Alucard's trauma, and almost never any on Trey's, and it just got so boring after awhile.

But you're right. Celiakardo, from what I've seen of it, seems like a ship that I could get down with, but N!Trevphacard (I don't actually remember the ship name) just has a huge dynamic imbalance that overshadows what would've made the ship at least decent. And this is coming from someone who literally ships the entity within the castle of LoS with Gabriel. Honestly, N!Syphacard seems like a better ship than any with Trey in it.

And the thing is that, you can have an unhealthy ship w a power imbalance! But you just gotta be aware that there is an imbalance there and were all that happening irl it would be a problem (even my beloved maleon ship is has its unhealthy elements. Leon bestie ilu but that mans is trouble). If there is no awareness of those elements it can come off as if they're being brushed under the rug or as if there's no actual unhealthy situation to begin with, which is hmmm :/. Ofc im not saying all ships must have a problematique disclaimer nor that all trephacard shippers are onboard w insulting your partner's murdered family, just that if there's no awareness of all that i find it uncomfortable.

And its funny you mention syphacard bc precusely one of the fics i vaguely remember was uhh, Sypha n Alu getting together while Trey anguished over it (iirc it was partially bc he hit or yelled at Sypha while drunk. Idk i do like that it addresses that alcoholism is not all funni silly jokes and it has devastating consequences both for the person and their loved ones but it also felt a bit mean to dump all the wrongdoings caused by Trey's poorly healed traum in front of him while n!Alu is the nice bf here despite his Behaviour. Not to stir shit for no reason but I'm genuinely interested in your take on netflixvania fans calling "trephacard" their OT3... bc to me it seems that trevor and sypha barely have any chemistry between them and they're canon, Alucard certainly does not have a single hint of it with either of them... some people thought Alucard was flirting with sypha in the library in S2 and I genuinely don't know if we're watching the same show or if compulsory heterosexuality is that intense of a drug...

OT3 anon: not to mention the fans going "they all loved each other they should just come back for Alucard" as if trevor and sypha didn't leave him behind because they were so moony for each other that they wanted to go on fun little adventures minutes after stopping genocide... they'd all barely met a week prior, there was barely an acquaintanceship between them, there is nothing to "come back to" that bridge is burned... I swear people have no reading comprehension... anyways sorry for ranting

LITERALLY. And the fact that even after like, what? a week of being “buddies”, then being alone for three months, Alucard resorted straight to being xenophobic and disgusting when talking about them? Lmao. Anyone who says they have chemistry is reaching way too hard. Especially now with season 3. They must be in denial, because at least with Season 1 and 2 I could get that some people might’ve been hoping for further character/relationship development, but as we’ve seen, there’s literally no plans for that. 

No characters have changed, they’re all the exact same. And literally the only reason Sypha and Trevor are together (because they hardly acted like they cared about each other in the first two seasons at all and all they were used for in the 3rd season is boomer jokes about how “wah my wife hates when i say beer is better than sex with her”) is because the show wanted to force it.

It’s like something I’ve said before: There’s no character development or motivation, there’s just plot points that the writing (if you can call it that lol) forces the characters into the direction of. there are so many better ot3s in ACTUAL castlevania, including trevor/sypha/alucard (and grants there too this time.)

Don’t be sorry for ranting, I love hearing this!! and i love having any excuse to rant, too. It makes me feel better to know that this franchise, near and dear to a whole tonne of people, isn’t completely overshadowed by some perverts grimdark wetdream bullshit.
