Hello everyone and happy Monday! Apparently it’s Blue Monday today, the most miserable day of the year. It was a tough one at work but I’m determined not to fall into the blues 😂 so here are three beautiful hardbacks I treated myself to just before Christmas. I’ve seen The Golden Mole around for a little while now and after flicking through it, I’m really excited to get to it. This is described as a “lavishly illustrated collection of the lives of some of the Earth’s astounding animals.” For example, did you know that a pangolin keeps its tongue folded in a pouch by its hip? Or that a wombat once inspired a love poem? 😂 Gosh I’m excited for this! 2023 is finally the year I tackle War and Peace! Along with over 500 other people, I am reading a chapter a day of this beautiful classic for the very first time. The readalong is hosted by @footnotes.and.tangents so check it out if you fancy joining us! #whiskeyandperseverance Finally, I was far more attracted to the title of this nonfiction book rather than the cover - The Book Of Phobias and Manias. I know I’m an arachnophobe, I’m pretty certain I have bibliomania 🤣 but want to know another fun fact about me? I have a phobia of cotton wool! Honestly, it makes me feel ill 🤢 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #anotherbookhaul #thegoldenmoleandotherlivingtreasure #katherinerundell #warandpeace #leotolstoy #buddyreadswithfriends #thebookofphobiasandmanias #katesummerscale #newbooksplease #onthetbrpile https://www.instagram.com/p/CnfUEnjrbEx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and hope your Monday has got off to a great start. I’m still doing half days at work because my body clearly hates me 😅 but here I am with my Monday book haul! (Some things don’t change! 🤣) You might already know that certain covers do entice me to buy them and Chouette was really screaming my name. It’s a dark modern fable about mothering an unusual child - an owl baby. It will grip you in its talons and never let go. Why do I feel as if this could be me?? 🤣🤣🤣 I’m taking part in the #greatthomashardyreadalong2022 and it’s been one of my favourite things this year. A Pair Of Blue Eyes is one of the Hardy books I haven’t read and tells the tale of Elfride, daughter of a Rector who faces an agonising choice between two men - the boyish architect Stephen Smith and the older literary man, Henry Knight as the two friends become rivals for her affections. Finally Wuhan, a real chunker of a book at 608 pages. Set in 1937, this epic historical fiction is set in China where Wuhan stood alone in a whirlwind of war and violence against the Japanese army. This forced unprecedented culture and political changes that shaped China’s future. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments. Have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #ohnoanotherbooktogetthrough #chouette #claireoshetsky #apairofblueeyes #thomashardy #wuhan #johnfletcher #historicalfictionbooks #classicnovelsnerd #quirkybook #readinganythingandeverything #obsessedwithbooks📚 #newbooksplease https://www.instagram.com/p/ChkjiucrvM9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone, happiest of Mondays to you and hope your week has started off well. I’m meeting bestie Janel @keeperofpages tomorrow for lunch (and probably book shopping, let’s be honest! 😂) so I’m really excited about that. Here’s a book haul! Crazy thing about this first book, The Impossible Fairytale, is that I already HAVE an edition on my shelves 🙈 However, I am trying to collect all the @tiltedaxisbooks so I had to pick this up too. The author is a major new voice from South Korea and has written a chilling, wildly original and unpredictable story. All buzz words for me! This book promises to be a fresh and terrifying exploration of the ethics of art making and of the stinging consequences of neglect. Manhunt - just look at that cover! I was chatting with my pals in the #bitcrackbookclub and the lovely Johanna from @memydogandbooks mentioned that she had just read this. It was already on my radar but she very kindly sent it over to me! This is described as an explosive post-apocalyptic novel that follows trans women and men on a grotesque journey of survival. Apparently, it is a timely, powerful response to gender-based apocalyptic story that failed to consider the existence of trans or non-binary people, from a powerful new voice in horror! Finally, I’m a bit annoyed with myself that I didn’t get the special edition of the lovely @alex_bell86 new novel when it was in Waterstones. The Winter Garden opens at the stroke of midnight with no great fanfare - after all, this is the time when all virtuous folk should be in bed. But for the few curious souls that brave the opening of its gates, many enchantments await. I know that my sister @chrissireads has read this already and loved it so might try to squeeze it in during December for the perfect wintry read. I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Have a great week everyone 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #newbooksplease #ohlookmorebooks #anotherbookhaul #theimpossiblefairytale #hanyujoo #janethong #tiltedaxispress #readingtranslatedliterature #manhunt #gretchenfelkermartin #thewintergarden #alexandrabell https://www.instagram.com/p/Clg5r-cL7cG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Today is sadly the last day of my holiday and I’ll be back on that sleeper train home tonight 😟 (Scotland always has my soul though 😉😂) Summer Island was bought for me by my lovely sister @chrissireads in our quest to read Kristin Hannah’s back catalogue together. Sadly it left me with quite disappointed. It was incredibly predictable and I never felt connected to the characters at any point! 😬 Moving Parts was my next acquisition from one of my new favourite publishers @tiltedaxisbooks it’s described as surreal and puncturing short stories from the Thai master of the form. In a pink-walled motel, a teenage sex worker brings a grown man to tears. A love-struck young boy holds the dismembered hand of his crush, only to find himself the object of a complex ménage à trois. A naked body falls from the window of a twenty storey building, while two female officer-workers offer each other consolation in the elevator. Sounds right up my street!! Finally, I preordered Reputation as I loved Anatomy Of A Scandal by Sarah Vaughan so much! It follows a politician whose less than perfect personal life is thrust into the spotlight when a body is discovered in her home. 😳 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Hello everyone and happy Monday to you all. This Monday I’m super excited as by this time next week I’ll be on holiday in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😍 Here’s a book haul! Spare Parts, a nonfiction book about the history of transplant science spoke to me and demanded to be bought! I’m a scientist in my non bookish life and I love indulging my geeky side in popular science. This promises to be a fascinating read from Indian surgeons regrafting lost noses in the sixth century BC to the French seamstress whose needlework paved the way for kidney transplants in the 1900’s. The Arsonists’ City was brought to my attention and my wishlist by the fabulous @tarheelreader This is described as a rich family story, a personal look at the legacy of war in the Middle East, and an indelible rendering of how we hold onto the people and places we call home. Finally, I bought Vera with all best intentions to join in with @savidgereads Patreon bookclub. Unfortunately I didn’t get round to reading it but I’m still keen to give it a go. It’s been compared to Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier which makes me slightly nervous (but slightly excited! 😂). I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Hello everyone and happy Monday to you all. Hope this week is going well so far. Today I’m sharing three lovely new hardbacks that were just begging to be bought. The House Of Fortune is Jessie Burton’s follow up to The Miniaturist and I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t read the first book yet but I’m so excited to be back in Amsterdam with Nella and her family again. Next up, the Booker prize shortlisted Small Things Like These which I have been hearing great things about everywhere! Set in an Irish town in 1985 this is the story of Bill Furlong whom in the run up to Christmas is approaching his busiest season as a coal and timber merchant. As he does the rounds, he feels his past coming up to meet him - and encounters the complicit silences of a people controlled by the Church. Finally, The Temple House Vanishing. I can’t remember where I heard about the author Rachel Donohue on IG but I remember thinking she sounded like my kind of author! It’s described as a stunning, intensely atmospheric novel of unrequited longing, dark obsession and uneasy consequences. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these authors or novels. Let’s have a chat in the comments! Hello everyone and TGIF! On this wet, wild and blustery evening in my part of the UK 🇬🇧 it really feels like Autumn is here and announcing itself in full and proud voice! 🤣 Here’s three paperbacks I picked up recently. The Icepick Surgeon is nonfiction from the author of books including The Disappearing Spoon, The Violinists Thumb and one of my favourites - The Tale Of The Duelling Neurosurgeons. Sam Kean tells the true story of what happens when unfettered ambition pushes otherwise rational men and women to cross the line in the name of science, trampling ethical boundaries and often committing crimes in the process. Next up, Indigenous Species from one of my favourite presses @tiltedaxisbooks I’m slowly collecting all the books I’m translation that they’ve published. The author addresses issues of pollution, consumerism and habitat destruction with a poets sensibility and her frenetic neon artwork. This is also a bold and necessary experiment in making a sight impaired accessible art book. Finally, I bought Astray in my quest to own everything Emma Donoghue has ever written 😍 With the turn of each page, the characters that roam across these pages go astray. They are emigrants, runaways, drifters, gold miners, counterfeiters, attorneys and slaves. They cross borders of races, love, sex and sanity. They travel for love or money, under duress or incognito. A sequence of fourteen fact inspired fictions about travels to, in and from North America, Astray offers a past in scattered pieces, a surprising and moving history for restless times. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Hello everyone! Happy Friday and welcome to the weekend. I’ve got an excellent weekend planned but am taking it easy tonight in bed with my books as it seems the week has caught up with me! Time for a book haul. Violent Phenomena is another addition to my @tiltedaxisbooks collection. I have a subscription with them and I’m always excited to find out what’s coming next. This is a book of essays in which 24 writers and translators from across the world share their ideas and practices for disrupting and decolonising translation. Coincidentally I’m about to start this second book today! I’m buddy reading this with a host of lovely bookstagrammers hosted by @pezzasclassicbooks and @celestes.bookshelf ☺️ This novel is the Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece and a powerful, triumphant portrayal of the American West as it really was. 🤠 Finally, my sister @chrissireads loaned me One Of The Girls to read after we read and enjoyed The Castaways together. This is the story of six friends enjoying a Greek holiday together. One is a liar, one is a stranger, one is a cheater, who is a killer? I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Hello everyone, I’m so glad it’s Friday! It’s been quite a week and I’m looking forward to telling you all about three new books I’ve added to my collection. I’ve just recently finished Shit Cassandra Saw and really enjoyed it. This is a feminist short story collection and is described as Margaret Atwood meets Buffy in these funny, warm and furious stories about women at their breaking point. Review to follow! Tomb Of Sand was a no brainer after it won the Booker International prize this year. It follows an eighty year old woman who slips into a deep depression after the death of her husband then resurfaces to gain a new lease on life. Finally, The Retreat. Since childhood, Sandra has been fascinated by the small, private island of Lieloh. Sandra is now in her forties and works as a receptionist but still harbours artistic ambitions. She sees an advert for a two weeks artistic retreat on Lieloh and resolves to set out on what might be a life-changing journey. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Hello everyone and happy Monday to you all! It’s a bank holiday today so I’d love to be telling you about the exciting things I’ve done but sadly I’ve been in bed most of the day! Is it chronic illness or thyroid removal related? Hard to say! 🤣 I’m going to cheer myself up by talking to you about a book haul 😁 This Edward St Aubyn series was inspired by the lovely Sarah over at @messy_aussie_reader who was reading it. The Patrick Melrose series is described as wonderful, wry and profound about an unforgettable, complex figure. It starts with Never Mind, then continues with Bad News, Some Hope, Mother’s Milk and At Last. I was delighted to receive Fearsome Fairies, Haunting Tales Of The Fae from my wonderful sister @chrissireads Taking inspiration from folk tales and medieval legends, writers of weird tales and ghost stories proved that fairies, elves, goblins and their ilk were something to be feared and respected as our ancestors did. This new collection of stories pairs strange creatures with frightening encounters to revive the fearsome past of the fairy folk. Penultimately, Rebecca is one of my favourite books and even though I have an edition, I wanted a shiny new Virago Modern Classics edition from the designer collection to look pretty on my shelves and match the others 😂 Finally, I have the beautiful Carly @stardust.and.sunflowers to thank for A Treasury Of British Folklore: Maypoles, Mandrakes and Mistletoe 😍 Carly has bought me all the books in this collection and I just love them! As well as looking at a history of folklore, this book has a directory of places you can go to see folklore alive and well today. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaultime #beautifulbooks #edwardstaubyn #patrickmelrose🌹 #somehope #nevermind #badnews #atlast #mothersmilk #fearsomefairies #deedeechainey #rebecca #daphnedumaurier #elizabethdearnley #atreasuryofbritishfolklore #maypolesmandrakesandmistletoe #quirkybooks #newbooksplease #arentialuckygirl #booksarethebestpresents https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch2iln7L0A3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Also happy bank holiday to everyone who gets one this weekend, I’ll spend most of it reading most likely 😂 I’ve just got back from a wonderful lunch with bestie @keeperofpages and there may have been some book shopping 😈 That haul will follow in a few weeks but for now I have to catch up with the books I haven’t shown you yet! Tell Me About It and The Coward were bought for me by another beautiful bestie @stevieredman I was feeling a bit low after my thyroid operation and these really cheered me up. Tell Me About It follows Nives as she has recently lost her husband of fifty years. To help her as she grieves, she brings her favourite chicken inside the house and finds it a more than adequate replacement for her husband! 😂 Those of you who know me well may remember that I’m a bit (okay, a lot) obsessed with my wild birds in my garden and I’ve tamed quite a few of them. This looks hilarious! When I showed it to Janel today as I saw it when we were in Waterstones she rolled her eyes. She knows what I’m like! 🤣 Sankofa is described as a captivating story about a mixed race British women who goes searching for the West African father that she never knew. Examining freedom, prejudice, and personal and public inheritance, this is a story for anyone who has gone looking for a clear identity or home, and found something more complex in its place. Finally, The Coward which hooked me with the first couple of lines of the synopsis. Question: What’s worse than being a fuck-up? Answer: Being a fuck-up in a wheelchair. This book is about hurt and forgiveness and how the world treats disabled people. It’s also about how we write and rewrite the stories we tell ourselves about our lives and try to find an ending. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaul #buyingbooksismytherapy #tellmeaboutit #sachanaspini #sankofa #chibunduonuzo #thecoward #jarredmcginnis #obsessedbybooks #newbooksplease #booksimexcitedabout #translatedfictionrecommendations #newtomeauthors #cantstopwontstopbuyingbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/Chu4fiwL0KS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and happy Friday! I’m going to enjoy this weekend as much as possible because I’m back to work on Monday. It’ll be nice to get into a routine again! Time for another book haul! 😜 I’ve heard such amazing things about Rachel Cusk as an author and still haven’t got to any of her books! 🙈 Described as a fable of female fate, male privilege, and a story of unfathomable attractions. Modern and timeless, it reminds us of art’s seduction and elemental power - to both save and destroy. Spirits Of The Season - Christmas Hauntings is another welcome addition to my British Library Tales Of The Weird collection. Festive cheer turns to maddening fear in this new collection of seasonal hauntings, presenting the best Christmas ghost stories from the 1860’s to the 1940’s. Finally, I’ve read and really enjoyed Lauren Groff before in Fates and Furies so was tempted by this new novel. Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Acquitaine, deemed too course and rough-hewn for courtly life, Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. Matrix carries currents of violence, sensuality and religious ecstasy in a mesmerising portrait of consuming passion, aberrant faith and a woman that history moves both through and around. It is a defiant and timely exploration of the raw power of female creativity in a corrupted world. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #bookmanía #bookhaul #scottishbookstagrammer #newbooksplease #rachelcusksecondplace #britishlibrarytalesoftheweird #tanyakirk #spiritsoftheseasonchristmashauntings #matrix #laurengroff #literaryfiction #historicalfiction #shortstoriesfan #booksonmytbrlist https://www.instagram.com/p/ChKuveWrr-e/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone! Life has been a bit crazy and will continue to be so for a while as I await thyroid surgery (a week on Friday). 😬 Sorry if my interaction is rubbish! I’m back with another book haul. I borrowed Her Last Holiday from my sister @chrissireads she read it recently and enjoyed it and I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read of C L Taylor’s books so far so I gladly took it off her hands! It’s also set in Malta, a country that’s very special to both of us. Fran’s sister Jenna disappears from a wellness retreat in Gozo that goes horribly wrong. Tom Wade, the infamous man behind Soul Shrink retreats has just been released from prison after serving time for the deaths of two people. However, he has never told anyone what happened to the third victim, Jenna. Next up is The Night Wire and other tales of Weird Media, another addition to my British Library Tales Of The Weird collection! This specific collection hasn’t got the best ratings on Goodreads but I’m still going to give it a shot. Finally, The Beauty Of Impossible Things which I preordered for the paperback release. This is about a girl called Natasha who has the gift of foresight, beset by strange dreams that she believes predict the future. The summer she turns 15, strange dancing lights appear in the sky above her town which she interprets as portents of doom. Then a teenager goes missing and Natasha is asked to use her powers to help. But her actions over that long, hot summer will have unforeseen consequences. Have you read anything by these authors or indeed, have you read any of these books? 😂 I’d love to know. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a lovely week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookreviewer #booksaremylife #bookhaul #paperbackhaul #bookobsessed #herlastholiday #cltaylor #britishlibrarytalesoftheweird #thenightwire #aaronworth #thebeautyofimpossiblethings #racheldonohue #newbookreleases #newbooksplease https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf4Tze7rBXh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
