Hello everyone and happy Monday! Apparently it’s Blue Monday today, the most miserable day of the year. It was a tough one at work but I’m determined not to fall into the blues 😂 so here are three beautiful hardbacks I treated myself to just before Christmas. I’ve seen The Golden Mole around for a little while now and after flicking through it, I’m really excited to get to it. This is described as a “lavishly illustrated collection of the lives of some of the Earth’s astounding animals.” For example, did you know that a pangolin keeps its tongue folded in a pouch by its hip? Or that a wombat once inspired a love poem? 😂 Gosh I’m excited for this! 2023 is finally the year I tackle War and Peace! Along with over 500 other people, I am reading a chapter a day of this beautiful classic for the very first time. The readalong is hosted by @footnotes.and.tangents so check it out if you fancy joining us! #whiskeyandperseverance Finally, I was far more attracted to the title of this nonfiction book rather than the cover - The Book Of Phobias and Manias. I know I’m an arachnophobe, I’m pretty certain I have bibliomania 🤣 but want to know another fun fact about me? I have a phobia of cotton wool! Honestly, it makes me feel ill 🤢 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #anotherbookhaul #thegoldenmoleandotherlivingtreasure #katherinerundell #warandpeace #leotolstoy #buddyreadswithfriends #thebookofphobiasandmanias #katesummerscale #newbooksplease #onthetbrpile https://www.instagram.com/p/CnfUEnjrbEx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I would never have read #SuperInfinite by #KatherineRundell had it not won the prestigious #BaillieGiffordPrize. Recently years many biographies won the prize. Some are quite unique in its form. This book is no exception. It’s a combination of biography and literary criticism. It reads more like a long essay. Still I won’t read any of #JohnDonne poems. https://www.instagram.com/p/CoemdtRO_vl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Bajkowa opowieść o przyjaźni, odwadze i potędze natury.

#katherinerundell #feovekurt #domingoyayinlari

I’ve just this snowy Friday evening finished Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell. I’ve overheard so many comments about this book from children at work and spoken to people who have only good things to say about this story over the last few years in the bookshop I work in that I thought it was high time that I read it and I’m very glad I did! Looking at my copy of Rooftoppers now, it lay beside me full of cornered-downed pages marking my favourite quotes and parts of the story, with the slightly ruffled around-the-edges cover that comes from delving into a paper and ink world which transports you into an entirely different time and world from your own. The story of Sophie seems to be running and wandering out of the pages every time I turn a page.
The story follows Sophie – a feisty, kind and courageous young girl who was found as a baby floating in the sea in a cello case of all things and found by the kind, gentle, quietly funny, calm and slightly eccentric Charles – a scholar from London who takes Sophie in and raises her as his own. He fills her young life with care, love, books, laughter, safety and the kind of free spirited enjoyment in life such as using the wall to write down your favourite quotes or having biscuits for tea, that every child dreams of yet unfortunately something that most of us adults frown upon. Her life (despite the disgruntled views of the government childcare advisor) is just as she as she likes it, she has Charles whom she loves with all her might, her music, books, spontaneity and happiness of life. Yet the only thing missing is her mother who is presumed dead from the shipwreck from which Sophie was rescued, but when the authorities take it upon themselves to take Sophie from Charles, the two of them decide to do whatever it takes to keep that from happening and find out that her mother is possibly still alive – and as Charles says ‘You should never ignore a possible.’ So off they set to Paris on an adventure that will change their lives for good in one way or another. And there, in Paris, is where it all begins.
There’s so many things that I love about this book from the simple delights of food, to the feelings and emotions felt because of the universal language called music and the magic of stories; the special friendships we form as children and whose friendships are solely unique to any other by sharing the excitements, pains and discoveries of growing up; the bonds that we share with the people we call family – that whether biological or not, family is not exclusive to the people who we share the same DNA with – and showing just how strong and important these bonds are that keep us upright when life wants to battle us down; the courage you get from love and following the ‘possible’ you know is out there; the unexpected thrills of life that so many of us overlook – like eating ice cream in the face of a rainy day and the opportunity to share your thoughts with someone on a starry night; the fierce power inside us that drives us to confront life right in the face; the fun in laughing at the ridiculousness of humans rather than getting bogged down with it; the freedom, wildness and injustice of being a child; the silliness of adults when we find ourselves overlooking the really important things in life; the fact that people should never underestimate the hardiness and greatness of girls nor children; and how amazing life can be when you have a little faith in your leaps and steps you take everyday.
Katherine Rundell really gives you the atmosphere of being there with these characters, smelling the smokiness and hearing the noisiness of city life; hearing the rain and seeing the night sky in all quietness and stillness with only the moon and birds as company. She has magicked up a wonderful story with characters and beautiful perspectives of life that I’m sure will stay with me for a long time. The children who’ve said how great this book is really knew what they were talking about! 😊
