There is only one page left to write on. I will fill it with words of only one syllable. I love. I have loved. I will love.

My first reread of the year, and I couldn’t have picked a better book. I Capture The Castle is a wonderful, classic British novel set in the 1930s. It features Austenite heroines, Shakespearean misunderstandings, and Dickensian rags and riches. I truly love it; it’s funny and witty, with much pathos and self-awareness. If you’re an Anglophile like me and haven’t read it, please search it out and give it a shot. The movie isn’t bad either, featuring Romola Garai, Rose Byrne, Bill Nighy, and Henry Cavill. #booksandtea #teaandbooks #icapturethecastle #britishliterature #willowpattern #bookrecommendations #anglophile #dodiesmith #tealover #booklover #blacktea #englishbreakfast #acupoftea #cuppa #1930s #bookworm #readthisbook #drinktea #springreads (at Blaine, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9cdjXoASsR/?igshid=n0lmfpi2rscl

All-Time Favorite Books: Classics
Anyone who knows me knows I could talk about books all day every day. I thought it would be fun to do a series on the blog where I share my all-time favorite books from several categories: classic fiction, contemporary fiction, historical fiction, memoirs, etc.
I’ll start with the classics. I’m arbitrarily giving this label to anything written more than 50 years ago. I really didn’t start reading classic literature until middle school, when my mom and sister dragged me to see the Keira Knightley “Pride & Prejudice” movie adaptation. Although I complained the entire ride to the theater that I didn’t want to see their “boring old” movie, my life was forever transformed. It was funny. And relatable. I immediately read and devoured several Jane Austen novels, then moved on to other classics. You’ll notice that I have mostly British lit on my list-my mom is a British lit teacher and majored in English in college so that’s why.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte-My favorite love story ever. Mr. Rochester forever! I’ve heard that the Twilight series is loosely based on Jane Eyre so all you Twilight fans better read the OG story.
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen-It’s so funny! My favorite character is Mr. Bennett. OMG and Mr. Collins. I also loved Sense & Sensibility and Emma.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott-This book is so good for my soul. It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I’m still not over the fact that Laurie and Jo didn’t end up together AND that he marries Amy.
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens-This book is spooky and creepy and I couldn’t put it down!
Tess of the D’Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy-This one is lesser known and it’s saaaaaad. But beautiful and worth a read. Trigger warning: contains rape and the death of an infant. Keep a box of tissues nearby.
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith-I wavered before putting this one on my classics list because I think it was published in the 1950s (I just looked it up-it was 1948. I was close!!). Fun fact: it’s by the same author as 101 Dalmations. A young woman lives in a crumbling castle with her eccentric writer father, ex-model stepmother, and siblings. Her old sister is determined to marry rich and escape their poverty. Two American men show up one day. Drama ensues.
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain-I hated Tom Sawyer but loved this one. JIM!
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald-Nick is one of my favorite narrators.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee-I used to dream of marrying Atticus Finch (played by the beautiful Gregory Peck in the film adaptation).
What are your must-read classics???

Brilliant. Bad. And a little Mad. The DeVil wears Dalmation. The origin story of Cruella (duh). Though the original animated feature (featuring an ADULT Cruella) came out in 1961, this one is set in 60s/70s London (the sets, props, music and costumes were all fantastic) and #EmmaStone and #EnmaThompson were both perfect as Estella and The Baroness respectively. It’s like a Devil Wears Prada if Andi had become the thing she sought to destroy, or if that movie and Oceans 8 had a baby. And though it’s a well done origin story, did it have to be Cruella? (I mean because Disney made it, yes, apparently) did we need to know Cruella’s backstory? Especially when, for me, it left such a gap from where this one ends to where the original began (even with the little connetions to the original - seeing Anita and Estella at school, Roger being The Baroness’ lawyer, Estella partnering up with Horace and Jasper (who in the original were brothers?), Estella giving Anita and Roger dalmation puppies, her car…) That all being said, I liked it more than I expected. The wardrobe department hit it out of the park (though that one outfit they let The Duchess wear to the London Gala? Ew.), and Estella’s scheme with that signature dress - wowza; also her plan at the end, ooohhhmmmyyygawd, all the work that went into both, holy crap - both were genius. I’m not disapppinted I saw it, but also wouldn’t run out and buy it either — the Disney/it being Cruella thing (yes I know they gave Maleficient some movies/a backstory too) is still weird to me #ssmovieof2021 #adventure #comedy #crime #JoelFry #PaulWalterHauser #JohnMcCrea #EmilyBeecham #MarkStrong #KayvanNovak #KirbyHowellBaptiste #TipperSeifertCleveland writers: #DodieSmith (based on the novel “101 Dalmations” by) #DanaFox, #TonyMcNamara (sreenplay by), #AlinBroshMcKenna #KellyMarcel, #SteveZissis (story by) director: #CraigGillespie movie of 2021 number 2) #Cruella https://www.instagram.com/beasybrecht/p/CY7gCpgFQ-u/?utm_medium=tumblr

Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone at work together. We love their work. Janet Grahame Johnstone (1 June 1928 – 1979) and Anne Grahame Johnstone(1 June 1928 – 25 May 1998)re twin sisters and British children's book illustrators best known for their delicate, detailed prolific artwork and for illustrating #DodieSmith classic book The Hundred and One Dalmatians. The twins were born in 1928 to successful British portraitist and costume designer Doris #Zinkeisen and her husband, Captain Edward Grahame Johnstone. They attended the Heathfield School in Ascot, Berkshire during World War II; their artistic bent nurtured both at home and at school. Later, they attended Saint Martin's School of Art in London, where they studied period clothing styles before moving to Suffolk in 1966. The twins never married and lived with their mother until Janet's death in 1979 and Doris's death in 1991. The Johnstone sisters' popularity took off in the early 1950s, when they were noticed by publishers and acquired a growing reputation as talented illustrators. They always worked together, passing drawings back and forth across their studio until both twins were satisfied with the final outcome. Janet specialized in animals and birds. Anne focused on the period costumes that so dominated their work. Because of their symbiotic collaboration, until the death of Janet in 1979, there was never a book illustrated under either one of their names alone. #grahamejohnstonetwins #childrensbooksillustration https://www.instagram.com/p/BvMqqtSgKfk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16yk16re9mcwt
