“Strangely, in school I was taught about the wonders of Britain, its empire and about snowy winters. Why was I taught about the winter snowstorms of Europe? I had not even seen a snowflake in my world… Later, I was to rationalise that everything European was at the top of the scale of values, and that all things from the colonised territories were at the bottom end of that scale.”

As an American, of course I’m a republican, but I am also a bit of an Anglophile, too, so why not.

English, Elizabethan, circa 1600
A Seal Ring, walrus ivory
the matrix with the arms of Gilbert Earl of Shrewsbury within the Garter Motto.
By Virtue of the very fragility of the material used, ivory signets of the period are rare. An ecclesiastical ivory signet is in the British Museum dating to the 16th century and Illustrated by Dalton. For a stylistic comparison note also the English signet ring in the British Museum with a similar pearled border, dating to the late 16th century.
Gilbert, Earl of Shrewsbury 1552-1616 was created a knight of the garter in 1592.

Always an Anglophile
This morning it’s time for my memoir meeting so I wrote this little memoir called,“Always an Anglophile” by Amy Zents Growing up in Canada in the 1960s Queen Elizabeth’s regal picture adorned the walls of most public buildings, including my elementary classroom at Sprucecourt school in Toronto Ontario. The United Kingdom, and especially England always fascinated me.In 2011 my husband and I…

On our last day in England my husband and I visited Windsor Castle which was on our bucket list for many years and we have not regretted it. Seeing the splendor of the state apartments, St. George’s Chapel (where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry married 2018), and the impressive royal art collection were just some of the highlights of our visit there. I was delighted to find this beautiful garden located on the castle grounds with one of the impressive towers in the background. I wonder if the Queen ever wanders around here when all the tourists are gone? Of course, our vacation is long over but I still feel nourished and rejuvenated by all the beautiful things we saw on our trip a d the experiences that we made. For all you Anglophiles following me, rest assured I have plenty more photos from our England trip to post. Lastly I would like to apologize that I haven’t been posting here since we returned to the US from England in the middle of July. I have been visiting accounts I follow, though. Somehow it was difficult for me to settle back in and once I got out of the posting rhythm it was hard to get restarted, again. I guess many of you can relate. But I intend to publish now more regular again and I am looking forward to it. I would like to thank everyone for sticking with me and staying faithful to my account. My follower count didn’t go down during my silence here which in the fast paced social media world is a miracle, and I am very grateful for that! I hope to continue to provide you with content that you enjoy! All his life Lovecraft was an extreme Anglophile. He thought of himself as a loyal Englishman, used English spelling for words like colour, and refered to a flashlight as a torch. Most of Lovecraft's favorite authors were British, Lord Dunsany, Arthur Machen, Algernon Blackwood, etc. Poe of course was American but certainly wrote in the tradition of the motherland. Lovecraft did not live to see the devastating effect WWll would have upon the British Empire but we can be sure that his brief admiration for Hitler would have turned to pure hatred if he had. Apparently Lovecraft's father had held British citizenship of some kind and spoke with a refined British accent. Lovecraft himself did not try to emulate the same manner of speech but admitted in letters that his was a typical New England accent - neither British, New Yorkish, or Bostonian, in flavor. Lovecraft did not celebrate the 4th of July, President's Day, nor seem to find much interest in Thanksgiving either! Like his childhood hero Sherlock Holmes, HPL held out hope that the U. S. would one day rejoin the Empire! Sometimes Lovecraft's ideas seemed so eccentric that one wonders if he was serious in some cases. Still, HPL was a strange and unique individual even beyond the essence of his tastes in fiction! (Exhibit 196)
