The more I engage with the “louder” parts of the Sonic fandom on Twitter and YouTube comments, the more I realize those who got out of their way to constantly invade and antagonize SonAmy debates always ignore a key detail.

Time and time again I get comments and messages about “nothing is happening between them” and “those are just regular interactions not your ship shit” when discussing the intricate ways of the dynamic, and that’s something I’m sure my friends and many other buddies in the fandom faced in the past. It’s always the same song and dance, but always missing the fact these characters have been interacting with each other for almost 30 years, with more or less signs of interest over those years.

When discussing Frontiers SonAmy, or IDW SonAmy, or even the latest Prime SonAmy debate, we’re not just making shit up from thin air, we’re evaluating their interactions while keeping in mind their past, the occasional romantic tension between them and their chemistry in general.

Every continuity that begins from the main canon is automatically subjected to the characters’ past and their interactions between each other. In recent years the main canon has been experiencing a stronger shift towards showing Sonic and Amy together more and more often, and the new era seems to promise even more ship teasing. Even better, now it seems like literally everything is canon, so the writing inconsistencies across the years are now accounted for the current development of these characters, adding even more history to them.

With all this in mind, just the way they look at each other is enough to turn heads in the SonAmy community, not because it’s a basic ass interaction that we’re blowing out of proportion, but because they’ve been throwing hints here and there for decades, and their mutual interest is growing more and more. They’re not complete strangers, they’ve been best friends for many years with hints of something more at many points, in different continuities.
