but today, as you walk onto the training grounds as the sun is just drifting over the horizon, still hazy and bruise-blue, you’re not first.

ava silva — a few years your junior and back from two years of grueling injury and rehab, the newest signing for your club, splashy and entirely unpredictable — hits a perfect bending ball into the upper left 90, then smiles to herself and races away from goal, arms spread wide, like she’s just scored in the world cup or won the champions league.

she has on team issue shorts and socks, one slipping down her ankle, a pair of boots that are a cycle behind your brand new mercurial vapors that nike sends you like clockwork, and a hoodie that you’re really only supposed to wear on the plane or bus for away travel days. her hair is cut above her shoulders now, haphazardly in a little bun but mostly falling into her eyes. she’s a far cry from your quarter-zip, zipped all the way up, tucked into your shorts like always, a ritual, and the ponytail braid that you make sure is neat and perfect before you ever step onto the field or into the gym.

ava lines up a shot again, hits another perfect bending ball, clinical and ruthless and beautiful, and throws her arms up again in celebration. you haven’t really found joy on the pitch in a long time; you haven’t seen joy on this pitch like this maybe ever. ava’s sheer delight at her unmarked goals, on an empty net, is frustratingly infectious. you had watched replay of her back injury; you hadn’t been in the same league, at the time, but she had been a bright young star and you had watched in horror a few months before the world cup, on a grainy stream in your hotel room with lilith and mary, as ava’s spine had apparently broken, a bad tackle in the box gone terribly, terribly wrong, projected to never play again. you won’t say it out loud — it’s impossibly sentimental, devoted, romantic; all things you are decidedly not — but watching ava play now, even like this, or maybe especially like this, is a miracle.

‘ava silva,’ you say, carrying your own bag of balls onto the pitch in her direction. she turns toward you with a grin.

‘oh captain, my captain,’ she says, then tucks an errant, sweaty strand of hair behind her ear, offers her hand.

‘beatrice,’ you say, ‘pleasure.’

ava’s smile doesn’t waver at all. ‘oh, i know,’ she says. ‘ballon d’or winner, wsl champion, nwsl champion, champions league runner up, the face of nike football. arguably the best player in the world.’ she winks, lets go of your hand. ‘the pleasure is all mine.’

‘that’s — i’m a 6,’ you say, feeling a little out of your depth and bewildered without any warning.

ava just laughs. ‘yeah, you seem like it.’ she flicks a ball up, does two around the worlds, and then catches it between her shoulder blades before popping it back up and sending it your way. ‘wanna play one v one, or do you have a whole little routine?’

‘i —‘ ava, in the early morning light, with the dew on the grass soaking into the juncture of your cleat and socks, the crisp air — it’s all perfect. you remember, in a flash, why you fell in love with football in the first place. ‘first to five, small goal.’

16. What were you go-to writing songs?

Mostly embarrassing! When I go through my Spotify wrapped, I can basically chart out what I was writing based on them. I usually have one or two songs that go on repeat for any writing project (with other things sprinkled in when I need a change of pace), but there were a few tunes that remained consistent in the background this year and are very much things that I would only really listen to while writing. I listened to a lot of Petit Biscuit's "Wake Up" (that beat!) and "Free" by Florence + The Machine (because it makes me so happy) while writing this year.

26. If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?

Every time I crack another section of a WIP, I am satisfied, but writing smoother than the LA weather was kind of a trip. All I had was a line about The Real Housewives stuck in my head, my Spotify Discover Weekly hitting me with the nostalgia bomb of "Charm Attack" (which I probably hadn't listened to in at least fifteen years at that point), and a fondness for that Bloomingdale's photoshoot and I walked away with a specific Top Gun: Maverick hyperfixation that has produced thirteen fics this year alone? Unhinged! Deeply satisfying! Highly embarrassing! (But "the cataract of his charm attack" encapsulates Hangman's whole vibe perfectly so we can blame Leona Naess for all of this.)

30. What’s something that you want to write in 2024?

The Bear Mob AU. Maybe some time loop stuff I've been thinking about. I also really want to take a crack at writing that post-rescue Yellowjackets fic spanning decades told from the reporter's POV that has been pinging around my brain all year. As a side note, now is the perfect time for all of you to get unhinged over Yellowjackets if you are not already. Paramount+ is probably the most useless streaming service I have, but I'm a slave to Yellowjackets and the NWSL (and the random desire to watch Days of Thunder that hits every three months like clockwork) so I must unfortunately persist in having it, but if ever there was a reason to hit up a free trial just to mainline two seasons, Yellowjackets would be it. (They also have a tendency to give you extra months when you try to cancel the free trial so there's that. This has been a PSA.)

For real though, there’s no way Tobin goes to January camp when she hasn’t played a full 90 in about a year, and Vlatko hasn’t seen her prove she can still be consistent, productive and healthy in a long time. Her best chance for the WC is to impress at ACFC (assuming she signs there) and get called in post the start of the NWSL season. Even then it’s probably a long shot though ngl, I love Tobin but there’s no reason to bring a player who can’t stay healthy and doesn’t provide us goals unless someone’s injured. I’d be taking Press before Tobs, and Lynn too if Tobs isn’t playing 90s. I’d absolutely take Tobin over the likes of Midge or Thompson tho.

& for no2, i’m in LA so i’m lucky in that i get to do a lot of stuff w acfc for work & obvs the games etc. so on the one hand yes they’re in california bc … i love writing abt socal bc it’s disgusting & beautiful & if i could have a house on the water yknow sign me tf up lol. but i also HATE nwsl style of play so… yknow. leagues & trophies are simply secondary to my perfect little world of european style footy in a us domestic league where bea was signed for $20mil or more & gets to have her fancy white-washed beach home

I’m happy that they will all get a break. Obviously I love watching them play but even just before 2020 when a lot of them were playing in the NWSL and then back home in Aus consistently and then went to Europe and then NT camps and tournaments - it’s crazy to think how long they’ve gone without an off-season. This is a great time for that especially with the World Cup and Olympics just one year apart as well. It’s well-deserved.

Just to add I had heard the Matildas wanted to put together a friendly during the Euros/Concacaf so they don't sit idle. This could happen in Aus I presume so it might makes sense she heads to Aus after her nt break to perth & camp. Good news Kristie has some time off after qualifiers as the nwsl shuts down so maybe a vacay for her and Sam? :)
