wrote something for @wayfarer-week! prompt #1, view
rating: G words: 433 characters: Brienne Varyn, Talsin summary: While her father meets with Cenric, Bri escapes her room. notes: Elene and Lewin are Bri’s half siblings, Talsin is the kids' caretaker. ao3 link
The sea wind rustles Brienne’s hair, tossing it into her face. She wrinkles her nose, freshly pink with sunburn. A half-eaten fishcake, purchased with crowns she'd “borrowed” from her half-sister, sits in her hand as she slouches on the dock. Elene won’t miss them, Brienne thinks. She has so many and she never counts.
Father had another of his stuffy meetings. He was still angry at her—He’d ordered her to stay in her room until further notice. So, she’d slipped out the window.
It wasn’t the first time. She’d fallen on her face on her earliest attempts but she was a practiced expert now, even with her bad ankle. She knew when to jump, which tiles to avoid, which cracks in the stone were deep enough to hold.
It was easy for her to hide here now. She could fit between rough barrels and crates stacked on the docks. It stunk of fish and seaweed. But it smelled like freedom too, on days like this.
She looks out at the view, feeling the breeze on her skin. The wind carries the cries of seabirds with it. They circle together, seeking fish in the shallows. White, wispy clouds glide over the horizon. Ships pass, some distant as specks, others close enough to hear the shouts of the crew. Sunlight glitters off the water, sparkling like Lewin’s newfound magic.
Brienne wrinkles her nose at the thought. Father had been so excited to see his youngest’s abilities. Then he'd ordered Lewin’s bedroom moved across the house, far away from her. I hope they let me see him soon. It’s been four days. She wishes she had wings like those birds so she could fly over to his window.
Brienne freezes at the sound of footsteps on the dock. Light, short, quick steps. Closer, closer. They sound familiar—she shrinks against the barrels. Her heart pounds.
“There you are.”
Brienne looks up. Her caretaker peers down at her. If the smell bothers them, they don’t show it.
“Talsin. I promise I was coming back,” Brienne whispers. “Don’t tell them.”
They smile, shading their eyes from the glare of the sun. “I won’t,” they say. “But they’ll be asking for you, soon. We need to go.”
“Me? Why? What could they want?”
“Your father wants you to meet someone.” They offer their hand. “Let’s head back. We need to get you cleaned up.”
Brienne sighs and takes their hand. So much for freedom. But Father’s never asked for her in a meeting before. Curiosity stirs her thoughts as she follows Talsin up the road. Maybe he’s finally decided I’m important.

I would like more details on beach episode 👀
ty rolo! 💕
so this is very silly and self indulgent, basically a little beach scene after Aeran and Bri get all their cronks and go on vacation and never have any problems again 🤡
it's kind of rough, perhaps a little ooc and definitely the oldest one on the wip list akhdks I think it's from 2 years ago. This is the first part in the document, I'll put it under the cut for length.
The sun beats down on Brienne’s back. The sand is warm beneath her and the wide brim of her hat shades her face and her book. It’s a tattered, torn little thing with a bent spine that she picked up from a small shop near the inn. The title reads something like “song in the storm.” The cover is faded with an image that used to be two barely clothed melusine reaching for each other between two ships in a hurricane. It’s hardly visible now.
The pages rasp between her fingers as she turns them. 20 pages in and it’s a slow start. Bri doesn’t know if this one will be too dramatic for her taste. So many of them are.
Aeran sits down next to her. “Here,” he says, handing her the sun balm. “Or you’re going to turn into one giant freckle.”
She laughs and sits up, brushing sand off her stomach. Aeran has a wry smile on his lips.
“What?”
“We have a blanket, you know. You’ll never get that sand out of your clothes now.”
Bri removes her hat and puts the balm on her face and neck. “Well, I’ll just have to take them off, I suppose.”
Aeran raises an eyebrow, smirking. “That would be-”
“For swimming, obviously.” She interrupts him and grins. “Here, can you-” She turns her back to him.
“Oh, you need my help with this?” He laughs and runs a hand through his hair. He dabs the balm onto his hand. “Sorry, I’m too busy thinking about the first thing you said.” He rubs the balm onto her back.
Brienne turns, a gleam in her eye. “Is that a problem?”
Aeran smirks. He finishes with the balm, and slips his hands around her waist. “I’m doing just fine, thank you.” He brushes the hair off her neck to place a soft kiss behind her ear. She closes her eyes and leans into him. “We should go swimming. It’s getting too warm. And my book is nowhere near interesting enough to keep reading.”

wayfarer microfic challenge pt 3
Finally finished a few more of these! Prompts from here.
part 1 | part 2
Formal wear or event 305 words
“Aeran, this is serious. Varyn said–”
“No one will care how we look, Brienne.” Aeran leans against a couch, picking at his nails. “We’re not the important ones.”
“Yes they will! These people are rich and bored! That’s all they care about.”
He laughs. “Well, too bad for them.” He’s put on the uniform Varyn provided, just like hers, but he’s still a mess. Everything is half buttoned and rumpled. His hair is somehow more tousled than usual. Brienne glares at him. This is the first time Varyn has brought them on a diplomatic training mission. She told them to get ready while she talked to someone. Brienne can’t remember the name. Someone important. Oh gods, why can’t she remember?
“Aeran if you mess this up for us, I swear–”
“You’ll what?”
Brienne huffs. “I don’t know, push you down the stairs while all the prissy nobles are watching. Can you at least button your jacket?”
Aeran groans in annoyance. “No. It’s too warm in this stupid room. When is Varyn coming back? I-“
The door opens. Varyn stands above them, a picture of grace and confidence. Her russet hair is impeccable. “They’re almost ready for us.” She looks them both over. “Are you ready?
Brienne takes a deep breath and smooths her jacket down. “Yes.”
Varyn nods. “Good. Remember, follow my lead. Don’t worry about talking to anyone. I want you to observe, listen, and tell me anything important you hear at the end of the night.” She smiles. “Let’s go. Kellis, button your jacket, please.”
Aeran mutters under his breath. Brienne covers her mouth, stifling a snicker.
“Shut up, Bri.”
“What? I said nothing.”
Aeran elbows her in the ribs.
“Hey!”
“I thought you two were ready?” Varyn calls from the hallway.
“Coming!” Brienne rushes after her, leaving Aeran to close the door behind them.
First light 313 words
The dim grey light of another Rona dawn filters through the shutters. Rain falls in a gentle murmur on the rooftops.
Brienne’s eyes flutter open. She groans. A steady ache pulses in her left ankle. After yesterday’s tumble from the alleyway roof, it’ll take a few days to recover. She rolls onto her back with her hands under her head, careful not to bump into Aeran. They have 4 days left on this contract, and still no leads. Maybe today they’ll find something.
Aeran mumbles and turns to face her, but doesn't wake. His head rests on his arm, his hair is flopped over it. He looks so different asleep. Brienne smiles. Without his furrowed brows and stress lines, he's almost nothing like the intimidating figure he is when awake.
He’s so tired, all the time. They both are. She sighs. We'll get out of here soon, she tells herself. We have to. She closes her eyes, imagining they're anywhere but here. That they can sleep in without worrying about mercenaries breathing down their necks. Enjoy life for once. Maybe, when things calm down, I can tell him how I feel, and then–
She looks over at him again, her eyes moving between his eyelashes, his mop of curls, the small cut on his lip, the light stubble on his jaw. She wants to reach out and cup his cheek. Gently press her forehead to his. Wrap her arms around his waist, kiss him softly, slowly, till they forget how tired they are. Make him smile. Pull him flush against her. Run one hand down his back, feel his breathless laugh against her mouth as she kisses him again, his hands in her hair—
Brienne sits up. The room is suffocating. A walk sounds good. Fresh air. Her ankle will be fine. She needs to get out of this room and stop thinking.
First meeting 292 words
Today is a new day, with a new contract, and contacts to meet. Brienne makes her way down the streets of Vestra, dodging merchant carts and busy pedestrians. She can hear birds from the clothing lines high above the hubbub. The smells of fresh bread and spiced meat drift through the air behind her. The sunlight beats down. For once Brienne wishes she had time to enjoy the warmth, but there's work to be done. She squints at her scribbled directions on her notes. “Should be here,” she mutters, turning towards a large metal door. The knocker is heavy as she lifts it.
The door opens. “Do you have an appointment?” Brienne looks down at the petite melusine in front of her. Chin length, wispy black hair frames her heart-shaped face. Yellow eyes stare up at her, impatient. “Well?”
“I’m here about a contract,” Brienne says, tapping her pendant. “I’m a Wayfarer.”
The melusine’s eyes brighten. “Oh! Perfect. No appointment needed, come right in.” She gestures behind her and Brienne slips inside. The door closes with a soft thud.
“Well, Wayfarer, what’s your name? I need to know who we’re working with.”
“Brienne Varyn.” She pockets her notes. “And you?”
“I’m not the important one here,” the melusine laughs. “I’ll take you to Morac. He’s the one you really want to talk to.”
“Sure,” Brienne says. “But tell me your name anyways. Morac had to be a busy man. No use bothering him if you can help me.”
The melusine lowers her eyes. “I suppose you’re right.” When she smiles and looks up again, Brienne can’t help but notice how pretty she is. “My name’s Myrrha Toranis.”
“Myrrha. Nice to meet you.” Brienne grins. “I’m sure we’re going to work well together.”

wayfarer microfic challenge
inspired by @ghostwise to write some small fics for Bri! prompt list here. (not sure how many of these i'll do, i'm just having fun for now!)
Inventory/Sick
“How are you feeling?”
Brienne sits with her feet up on the cot, staring at something in her cupped hands. Dark circles line her eyes and her lips are chapped. She’s slept through most of the four days since Rona. She still looks terrible. The cot creaks as Aeran sits next to her.
She smiles groggily. “Shh. I’m studying…this.” Drakehand’s idol stares at him from her palm, grotesque eyes bulging in its tiny face.
He raises an eyebrow. “And how’s that going for you?”
“Oh, fine. I think it’s a priceless artifact. Should’ve sold it to Hera.” She laughs and draws a hissing breath, falling back against the wall. “Ugh. My head–”
“Bri,” Aeran puts a steadying hand to her shoulder.  “Take it easy.”
“I’m tired of this room.” Brienne slumps forward. “I think I’ll ask the crew if they have playing cards.”
“Planning to gamble your crowns away already? I can’t see that going wrong at all.”
She snorts. “If anything I’ll gamble with this.” She holds up the idol. Its unsettling eyes catch the light from the window. “Stunning, isn’t it? What wouldn’t you give for it?” Her laughter at her own joke becomes a grimace as her head spins. She closes her eyes, leaning into him.
Aeran places his hand over hers, over the idol. “We have time to gamble later.” He grasps the idol, but doesn’t move his hand. “Almost three whole weeks.”
Brienne raises her head. She meets his eyes with a tired warmth and her lips curve into a gentle smile. Aeran takes a deep breath.
“Get some more rest, Bri.” He stands up, holding the idol.
She sighs and flops down on the cot. “Fine. But don’t go gambling that thing away. It’s mine.”
Fighting/Hurt
“Shit! I didn’t mean – I wanted to–” Myrrha shrinks back. The pink melusine’s eyes grow wide. Her short dark hair swishes around face. Brienne remembers running her fingers through that hair weeks before. Together near an open window. Little soft kisses in the sun. Laughing, happy.
Now blood drips onto the cobblestones and she looks down to see red pooling in a fresh slash on her shirt. In a daze her eyes move over the familiar embroidery, the teal silk fabric.
“What could you possibly have meant?” Brienne’s voice breaks. “You could have killed me!”
“I’m so sorry, Bri, it’s part of the job. I have to do this.” Before Brienne can respond Myrrha lunges. Brienne dodges her blow and draws her sword in one smooth motion. “Myrrha, wait!”
The melusine teleports behind her. Before she can turn, Myrrha plunges a dagger into her right side. Brienne screams and twists, slashing Myrrha’s arm as she stumbles back. The dagger comes with her.
Myrrha tries to snarl, but it turns into a sob when she sees all the blood. Her arm hangs limply at her side. “Oh Bri. I never wanted– I-I’m sorry.”
Brienne groans. “What the fuck, Myrrha?”
She gets no answer but tears.
“You missed. Twice. Looks like you’ve lost your dagger. And you’ll need a brightwarden for that arm.”
Myrrha covers her face and sobs into her hands. “Bri-I-” She crumples to the ground. Her shoulders shake. “Don’t kill me. Please.”
Brienne’s steps are heavy. “You’re bad at your job, Myrrha.” She drops the dagger at Myrrha’s feet. “And you just ruined my favorite shirt. I don’t want to see you again.”
The words aren’t true. She misses Myrrha even as she walks away, too confused to do anything but stare at the tear in her shirt.

wayfarer microfic challenge pt 2
Prompt list here. Apparently I can only give Bri angst today.
Above-average
“What were you doing in that storeroom?”
Brienne looks away from her father. She’s on the worn quilt of her bed, propped up against all the pillows Talsin could find. Her broken ankle is wrapped, splinted and resting on several layers of cushions to stop the swelling. Talsin tended to her as best they could, but it still hurts. “Drink the tea,” they’d said. “The herbs will help.” She clutches the warm mug to her chest.
“Brienne. You will tell me, or–”
“Playing,” she says, chewing on her lip. “It wasn’t my idea, it was Lewin’s! He wanted to play hiding games, and–”
“I don’t care, Brienne. You’re not allowed near those storerooms. You’ve been told this many times, on many occasions. Today you’ve cost us more than you can possibly fathom.”
Brienne looks down into her tea. “I know, I broke something. But it can’t be that bad. Maybe I can help fix it? I want to help. You never let me help.”
Myrkos pauses. “And do you want to know why that is? You’re only good at one thing, Brienne. Ever since you were born.” He moves towards her. Brienne clutches her cup tighter.
His voice rises with each step. “You’ve done nothing but break, shatter and destroy everything you’ve touched. We’ve kept you out of the way for a reason. Now you can’t even keep from breaking yourself.” He motions to her ankle. “Stay out of the storerooms. Stay out of my way. Stop giving Lewin ideas. Gods know you’ll break him too once his magic shows.” She doesn’t look at him. Her lip starts to quiver, but she bites it and stares deeper into her cup. She waits until her father slams the door behind him to burst into tears.
Sleeping
They’re surrounded by rumpled sheets and pillows. Aeran’s breath is soft, whispering in and out against her chest. They haven’t spoken in awhile. He’s asleep now, and Brienne sets her cheek against his hair, her hands caressing the bumpy, knotted skin of his scarred back. She doesn’t want to move or change anything about right now.
It all happened so fast. From tearful shouting, to his kneeling apology, to breathless kisses and now, this. She closes her eyes, savoring the moment. He seems so peaceful. She loves being so close to him, feeling his warmth, holding him. She’s loved him for so long and for a moment, everything is fine. This point of tension, at least, is gone.
Something is still wrong, she knows. He’s been unraveling since they got to the city. She can’t stand to see him falling apart. And still, he won’t tell her anything. She pushes down a wave of frustration at the thought. He has his reasons. I just hope he doesn’t shatter. I can’t lose him to this. She takes her worry for him and shifts, wrapping herself around him a little more. He doesn’t stir. She runs a hand softly over his hair. We’re still together. We will get through this, she thinks. We’ve got each other, like we always have. As she drifts off to sleep, Brienne cradles him as though her limbs can keep him from breaking.

11, 14, 22 for Brian >:)
ty Nero 💕 Brian beloved 🥺
11. Do either try to hide their emotions if upset? Can the other still tell?
Lol yes and Aeran is absolutely terrible at hiding his, as we all know. I think Bri is better at hiding hers. Aeran will still pick up on the fact that she's not happy but he won't know the full extent unless she tells him.
14. How do their personalities compliment each other? How do they clash?
Their overall differences (direct approach vs diplomatic, ranged vs melee, dark vision and super hearing, etc) help them work better together. They're both fairly low maintenance when it comes to casual, everyday interactions, so they don't usually argue or fight unless something major comes up (everything is definitely fine after episode 2 😭)
They will clash over plans sometimes, Bri definitely thinks Aeran is too direct and stubborn, and he thinks she's too...nice. And then there's the whole Aeran keeping secrets thing, but I don't need to elaborate on that 😂
22. What reminds each of their partner?
for Bri: blue sky (like his eyes), taraniel flowers (bc of his bow name)
for Aeran: certain shimmery things, like light on water, might remind him of her crest. also she used to have this shampoo (she's long since run out) but it smelled like a very specific combination of herbs and sometimes, depending on the apothecary, their shop will smell like it.

19, 32, 41 for bri please! 💗
thank you azia <3
19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?
Bri easily forgets her own boundaries. She ignores her own needs, and possibly the other person's, because she wants them to be happy, and she wants their attention/approval/love, etc. As a kid she used to be afraid that if people around her weren't happy with her all the time, they'd leave her or punish her. It's not her mindset now, but it is the origin of this flaw, I think.
Idk if this alone has destroyed relationships, but it's led to a lot of unhealthy situations (and it was definitely the reason things with her ex were so messy)
32. Describe a scenario in which your character feels most uncomfortable.
In a crowded street, a meissandic cleric rushes by her. Their hands brush by accident. The cleric cries out in surprise at her touch. Everyone turns to look. When the shock fades from the cleric's face, there's only pity. They tell her in a soft, shaky voice that increases in volume with each sentence, that she makes them sad. That she'll never know the gods' true blessings. That she's brave to live such a cursed life. Bri tells them she doesn't care and walks away. As she leaves, the cleric tells the crowd they should all be thankful they aren't like her, poor soul. Her keen hearing picks up the quiet things the people whisper about her. Few of them are kind.
(not sure if this is the most uncomfortable honestly, but it's up there. i did not mean for this to be so angsty asdkfjadf)
41. Does your character feel that they deserve to have what they want, whether it be material or abstract, or do they feel they must earn it first?
She does think she deserves what she wants. Not because of personal merit or being a good person, but because she's been denied many of those things for so long.

29 & 33 for bri? and 22 & 24 for kith? (I am absorbing. all the kith knowledge lol)
thanks so much <3
29. What did your character dream of being or doing as a child? Did that dream come true?
Bri wanted to captain her own ship. She hoped it would be the best in the Briadis fleet. Sometimes, when things were bad with her father, she dreamed of stowing away on a random ship and finding a life of her own with another crew. The only thing she ever got to do on her family's ships was scrub the deck and mend ropes, so no. it didn't come true. (Maybe it still could. Bri needs her pirate queen era tbh)
33. In the face of criticism, is your character defensive, self-deprecating, or willing to improve?
Bri is usually defensive at first, but she's willing to listen if she respects the person giving it. If it's a particularly touchy subject she might snap and refuse to talk about it at first, but then she'll feel bad and come back to them later.
22. What does your character like in other people?
Kith loves people who are easygoing and straightforward, with a sense of humor. They like knowing they could have a fun time with someone within the first 20 minutes of talking to them. Also, if they see someone being extra kind to animals or kids, they instantly respect them.
24. How quick is your character to trust someone else?
Kith used to be very trusting. They're too easily taken in by a funny joke, a kind act, or a pretty face. They used to give most people the benefit of the doubt, even if they seemed suspicious to others. Now, they'll do their best to be polite, but they're prepared to run the minute things go wrong. Especially around nobles or guild members.

what items can be found in your muse’s pockets?
For Bri and Cala please!
thanks viking! 💖
Bri:
strips of cloth to use as hair ties or finger bandages, a tiny pocketknife, folded up notes on jobs/to do lists, if it's cold or dry a small vial of lip ointment bc she hates having chapped lips
Cala:
the tiniest bag of snacks (usually hard candy or nuts), spare change, hair pins and ties, jewelry that she took off and forgot about. If she's going out casually she might bring lipstick.
Her winter coat pocket has a nice note that was part of a tiny snack gift Tataru put in her and Alphinaud's pockets before one of their trips in HW. She ate the snack and put the note back and now it lives there forever (until she washes the coat lol)

🍻 & 🍟 for bri (beloved) if u like?
thank you ellis :D
🍻: What's your OC's favourite comfort ritual? How do they calm themselves down after a rough day?
Bri is really into self care whenever she's upset. Cleaning her gear (even if it doesn't need it), organizing her pack, taking time to brush her hair out before bed. It gives her a little bit of control in sucky circumstances and helps her feel like a person again. She also likes to drink tea or hot water before sleeping, even if it's warm out.
🍟: What does your OC admit to be their guilty pleasure? What actually is their guilty pleasure?
To Bri "guilty pleasure" would mean something too extravagant or frivolous. She would admit to enjoying super fancy alcoholic drinks. She doesn't drink a lot because a) she can't afford to spend her money on that and b) she usually wants a clear head in her line of work. But she would totally be down for Rhesania's version of fruity drinks with umbrellas. What actually is her guilty pleasure? She also likes sparkly jewelry with gems on it. Like emeralds or diamonds that accent her crest? She'd be really into that. She'd never admit to it though.

I don't know if you're doing these asks yet or not, but please 17 and 25 for Bri? <3
ahh thank you! I wasn’t going to ask for any bc most people don’t know all my OCs but I’ll take it :)
17. Are they more shaped by nature or nurture - who they are, or what has happened to them? How have these shaped who they’ve become as a person?
Ooh. Much more nurture. The Spire falling really changed her. Believing she was the only wayfarer alive, even for a few years, left her lonely and exhausted. She didn’t feel like she had the time or freedom to deal with her emotions for a longest time. There wasn’t a lot of room for healthy grief or mental health breaks when she had to find another job ASAP just to survive. She’s become more adaptable simply because she expects things to go wrong. She’s not a complete pessimist and she’ll still give people the benefit of the doubt if they seem trustworthy. But she’s not really surprised when things go to shit anymore. And she’s so so tired of things going to shit. Her patience runs a lot shorter than it used to. So she copes by bottling up her emotions and being snarky towards anyone who seems a little too into themselves.
She’s always liked connecting with people, belonging somewhere, but that became harder after the Spire. She tried to find people she could trust before Karth. The fact that she had to move around so often made most of those relationships fade eventually. She’s less likely to make new friends now, even if she wants to, simply because of lifestyle. Deep down she’s desperate for anything or anyone that can anchor her and help her feel like she has a real place in the world again.
25. What do they need and want out of relationships, and how do they go about getting it?
Whether the relationship is platonic or romantic, she needs something comfy and consistent. People she can count on to be there for her unconditionally. People who will help her get up when she’s had a bad day, or week, or year, who take care of her when she can’t. People she can have fun with, be herself with. And unfortunately she’s loyal almost to a fault to people who have done this for her in the past, even for a moment. (I can’t possibly foresee any problems from this. Nope. None 😬)
For romance, she wants intimacy, but not necessarily sex (she enjoys sex but if her partner isn’t into it she’ll be fine with cuddles lol) Bri’s ultimate relationship goal is just sharing life with someone. Even if it’s just small moments. I don’t really know how to explain it more than that. She’s pretty low maintenance, she just wants to be understood.
How does she go about getting it? I think whenever she finds someone she wants to get closer to, whether platonic or romantic, she goes out of her way to make them feel accepted and safe. She’s pretty pessimistic on her own but if they’re feeling bad she’ll do her best to cheer them up. She’s very protective. She might do this because she wants them to love her back at first, but it is sincere despite that.
I hope all this made sense! i had to retype all this because the app crashed 🥲
