ILLUSION + HIDE [x] oc: finley "v" vaughn fandom: cyberpunk 2077 word count: 382

heaving with his back pressed against a crate, finley clutches at his chest with– he shakes his head. he coughs, ignores the blood that splatters on his chin, squeezes his eyes shut and tries to breathe. the fingers pulling at the fabric of his shirt are his own, long and scarred and marked permanently by cybernetics. but when he looks down again, his hand is entirely made of metal.

there’s a snicker to his left.

“gettin’ a little confused, are we?” johnny asks. bullets fly through him where he sits on a demolished car, body glitching where he would have been hit had he been anything more than an illusion straight out of finley’s most annoying nightmares.

“shut the hell up,” he winces in reply, with as much bite as he can manage when he’s having a panic attack in the middle of a gunfight with maelstrom. “just– be quiet. for once.”

he’d be ashamed of the whiny twang his voice has taken if it wasn’t for the fact that it gets him exactly what he wants: johnny shrugs with a mumbled “suit yourself” and disappears.

finley sighs shakily, brings a hand to his eyes while the other reaches for the gun strapped to his thigh. these episodes have been happening more and more and, while they don't usually bother him too much—or as little as they possibly can when johnny is so insufferable all the time—, he hates how little control he has over himself when they do happen, especially when he's busy being shot at.

when he opens his eyes again, his hand is his own, as are the clothes on his back and the oozing wound in his shoulder. he leans closer to the crate he’s hiding behind to peak at the gang members shooting his way.

“sniper in the house, fyi,” comes johnny’s voice right next to his ear, and finley almost jumps out of his skin. instead, he spins around with a discontent grunt and aims at said sniper. takes her out with a single bullet in the red lights that serves as her eyes. “boom. we work so well together, v.”

finley can’t ignore the mocking tone johnny’s tone has taken. he rolls his eyes. he can already feel a migraine creeping in.

“fuck off, johnny.”

💭 THOUGHT BALLOON — what is your oc's MBTI, enneagram, and/or other personality aspects (if known/interested in)?

his mbti is infp (which fits him sm bc of how like. caring. and idealistic he can be) and his enneagram is 6w5 (the guardian) which, again, SO fitting for a man like him. so loyal but also very pensive kinda guy. analytical one might say.

🌴 PALM TREE — does your oc have a green thumb? do they enjoy gardening?

i never really thought abt it before but. god he DOES have a green thumb actually!! his apartment is full of plants because he still feels weird being in night city and wants to remember being outside (even tho "outside" is a desert). i think he also grows plants to manifest the future he wants, aka being at peace in a place that's connected to nature and had NOTHING to do with night city. he also gardens i've decided just now bc he can't stand all the factory foods (which is gonna be a useful skill when he DOES get his little haven away from everything!!)

💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know.

– finley is trans!! it's a ripperdoc in the bakkers that did his top surgery a few years ago and there were some complications (normal thing to happen in the badlands methink) so his scars are now a little jagged and strange, but he loves them nonetheless – was taken by raffen shivs as a kid to be sold or eviscerated. he ended up killing and maiming his way out of the camp with a scalpel and running away before being found by some bakkers scouts. – sometimes, when he can't sleep in his apartment, he goes down to the garage and sleeps in his car. it's something that's more familiar to him and it soothes him despite the grief that comes with it.

🐈 CAT — does your oc prefer a wide circle of friends or a few close friends?

he definitely prefers a few close friends. doing what he does—infiltrating the project at eden's gate years ago and now juggling his allegiances as best as he can—, it's much safer to only rely on a few friends he can really depend on rather than risk being ratted out by hanging out with too many people. he's also very slow to trust, so he's never even had a wide circle of friends, even as a child.

🤍 WHITE HEART — what are three of your oc's neutral/questionable traits?

– maxwell is an excellent hunter. he learned as a child with his uncle and his big brother achilles. he never liked it. – tends to be quieter in most situations, only there as support for whoever he's with (be it jacob or eli). he doesn't take sides during fights, which is why he's so conflicted about the reaping and its factions. – doesn't listen to much music. idk if this counts as a trait but there it is!! my poor underdeveloped boy

🍝 SPAGHETTI — what is/are your oc's favorite food(s)?

he likes homemade foods, no matter what that food might be, but the food that brings him the most comfort is saltines and peanut butter. it's just a little snack he used to get as a kid when they were a little tight on money and it brings back a lot of memories, good and bad.

💚 GREEN HEART — does your oc prefer being inside or outside?

outside!! carter grew up on a spaceship, so being outside on earth is one of his favourite thing. i mean, there are trees, flowers, rivers, lakes, animals, bugs!! so many things to see, so many beautiful colours, so many different smells!!

🍦 SOFT ICE CREAM — what is/are your oc's favorite ice cream flavor(s)?

strawberry,,,, he's a very strawberry and banana kinda little guy and strawberry ice cream is just so sweet AND pretty. all pink. important also to note he hates pistachio ice cream (projecting that on him rn)

🎶 MUSICAL NOTES — what type of music does your oc like? do they listen to music very often?

carter listens to all kinds of music!! growing up with peter quill as a father, he ofc listened to a lot of music from the 70's and 80's and they're what he listens to the most nowadays, but he also enjoys pop music a lot and the shrek 2 soundtrack!! he's also a BIG fan of dolly parton

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

finley finds it hard to deal with every emotion. he IS emotionally mature, as in he does know how he feels and doesn't make others pay for the way he feels, but it's difficult for him to deal with having any kind of emotion because he gets such physical reactions to them? frustration makes him nauseous, fear makes his legs weak, happiness makes his throat tighten uncomfortably, etc etc. he's just such a physical man in his reactions—and represses so many of them—that it's hard to deal with any emotion at all without being a little weird about it.

💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep?

he's always had some trouble falling asleep, even as a kid, and especially now that he's in night city with all these noises that he's still not entirely used to. what helps him fall asleep is surprisingly to drink some chamomile tea and listen to movie soundtracks!! it keeps his mind off everything else, at least for a few hours.

🍰 CAKE SLICE - favourite cake flavour? are they specific about types of cakes?

i'm sorry to tell you this but this man does not like cake. he can make an exception for banana bread but that is IT. he doesn't like the texture and, esp with store bought cakes, HATES the icing. i don't think anyone hates icing more than he does in all the nusa.

🌋 VOLCANO - how bad is their temper? is it a slow boil, or a instant explosion?

before the heist, finley's temper is closer to a constant simmer. he's not an explosive guy and, as i said before, he represses many of his reactions to the emotions he feels, so he usually manages to calmly tell whoever's getting on his nerves to knock it off (through gritted teeth most of the time, but still).

after the heist, though, he's a lot more explosive. it doesn't take much to piss him off because he's just got so much going on and it's all a little too much, so he doesn't give as much of a thought about others' feelings before he tells them to shut the hell up or, in some cases, punches them right in the teeth. still, he tries his best to control that temper of his.

🌏 EARTH - will they give up the world for someone they love? is this decision easy for them?

in a heartbeat. finley is so full of love that it hurts me physically to think about it, he loves his friends and family so so much and would burn down the entire planet for their sake. there is literally nothing he wouldn't do for them. maybe he'd feel a little bad about it. maybe he'd feel REALLY bad about it. but, to him, they come first, and the rest of the world comes after.

📸 CAMERA - do they enjoy having their picture taken? what's their go-to pose? do they like taking photos? what do they take photos of?

does not care about having his picture taken, but it rarely happens because his go-to pose is literally a kubrick stare. he makes even the silliest picture look like jack nicholson just showed up.

he doesn't take many pictures, but the ones he does take, he prints out and keeps either in his apartment, in his car or in his vest. he takes pictures of the people he loves, but also of things that remind him of them. whenever he sees a cool car, he takes a picture because that's the kind of thing he'd have shown jackie in the past.

✏️ PENCIL - is there a particular quote / lyric that you associate with them?

"i wish i had the time to live a little more"

song lyric that makes me fall to my knees and weep uncontrollably!!! he wants nothing more than to live peacefully and yet he's thrown in a world where everything moves so fast and people leave so fast and. ogh

🔧 WRENCH - are they good at fixing relationships? or do they tend to avoid doing so?

you can try to pry a relationship out of finley's cold dead hands. even if there's nothing left to fix, even if it's toxic, even if it kills him to hold on, he never lets go, at least not willingly. relationships are incredibly important to finley and, as hard as it is to actually get close to him in any way, once you're there, he'll do anything to make you want to stay.

☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon

he can sew really well!! he had to learn pretty early to do that while living on the road, but it's now something he does to relax in his free time. he's still really bad at creating designs, but he makes ugly little plushies that he displays in his apartment or gifts to his friends (the aldecaldos have one that serves as a mascot. it's supposed to be a dog. it does not look like one.)

😭 CRYING - what makes them cry? do they cry easily?

finley doesn't cry very easily, mostly because he tries very hard to stay in control as much as possible. he cries whenever he loses someone dear to him—cried when jackie and t-bug died, cried when the bakkers dissipated, etc. he also cried when his car got smashed by delamaine, but that's mostly because he was still emotionally wrecked from the whole dying-and-coming-back thing.

😨 FEARFUL - when scared, do they go into "flight" or "fight"?

full on fight, which he sometimes ends up regretting when he's with people he cares about or in crowded places where bystanders might pay the price for his fighting instincts.

🍧 SHAVED ICE - do they still have any objects from their childhood? what significance does it have to them? what would their reaction be if they lost it?

he lost most of what he had from before he became a nomad, but kept a bit of the chain of his first bike, which he now uses as a belt accessory. he also kept a kids' geography book he found in an abandoned trailer as a child.

the chain is just something he keeps because he has nothing else tying him to his biological family, but the book represents everything he wants: to travel, to see the world, and to settle somewhere nice and peaceful, away from the chaos of night city and its surroundings. if he were to lose it, he'd be absolutely devastated. it's like a traveller's guide to following his dream, at least to him.

🌙 MOON - what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?

he literally just wants to settle down somewhere nice and live out the rest of his days quietly. that is literally it. he's willing to do a lot to get it, but he's too busy to really work on it, and night city is determined to keep him there.

🍁 MAPLE LEAF - what is their favourite season? why?

winter!!! he loves seeing snow so much. sure, there's not much of it and it's kinda hard to drive his motorcycle in the snow, but it's worth it for the cold weather and the kind of scenery he can see.

☀️ SUN - are they a morning person? what is the first thing they do in the morning?

NOT a morning person. kinda guy to snooze his alarm 1378458679 times before actually getting up. first thing he does is drag his ass to the shower and spend an hour rotting under the cold water.

🙉 HEAR-NO-EVIL - what is the worse thing your oc could hear from someone?

that he damns everyone he loves :D and he'd believe it because he lost so many loved ones already, lost his biological family and the bakkers and jackie and t-bug,,,, it'd kill him to hear it but he'd know it's the truth.

it'd have to be something REALLY big for finley to actually cut someone out of his life, like putting someone else he cares for in danger or something like that. apart from that, he's literally impossible to get rid of.

most likely to drive off a cliff (he can sometimes be a distracted driver 🕺)

pull the lever. save as many people as he can– inaction is as bad as doing the wrong thing, might as well do something and hope for the best.

because of his cold demeanour, people assume he's a dick, and they're only partly right. yes, he can be a bit of a cunt, but he's actually a cheesy little mf and very caring and loving. please believe me.
